The Rose & Crown holds a special place for us, beginning eight years ago with a baptism breakfast for our two children. In fact, we have enjoyed several types of hospitality here, the most recent being my husband's 60th birthday party. We chose the buffet lunch catering option, which was beautifully presented with chocolates and strawberries adorning the food table: a lovely touch. The service was good, discreet, with no fuss, too. An old-world charm graces the public rooms here, which offer variety being either spacious or cosy. The positioning of this restaurant is second to none, overlooking the river and the old bridge, bringing guests peacefully close to nature. The occasional passing swan adds to the enchantment. Recommended.

We met friends here for a couple of nights as it was central and also ideally located for walking into the city and site-seeing. We did the 2 night deal with money off dinner and a bottle of prosecco. The room was ok, clean and a comfy bed but very tired. The shaver point in the bathroom didn't work and we had to go into another room to shower as our shower was stuck on red hot! The disappointing part of the whole weekend was the evening meal. Over priced and just not of good quality. Mussels the size of peas and the belly of pork soggy with no crispy crackling and no apple sauce in the whole place! Overall a dreadful meal. The breakfasts were ok with a nice selection for the cooked breakfast. However it too was let down by not being topped up BEFORE it had run out so firstly I waited for the coffee machine as it had run out of beans, then there was no orange juice and then to top it all no bacon, hash browns or sausages. By the time they had been topped up the scrambled egg was stone cold on our plates. On the plus side the staff were smiley, friendly and helpful although there didn't appear to be any actual management on site. Definitely needs a total overhaul.

Six of us ate in the Rivers Edge Restaurant on Thursday evening 30 November and Friday evening 1 December. On our first night we had meals off the general evening menu and all of us really enjoyed the service and food. Our second night we all ate from the Festive Christmas menu, which we had booked in advance and this was an absolute delight. We all had a variety of starters and five of us had the traditional turkey as main and one the lovely salmon dinner. The whole atmosphere in this restaurant was just brilliant and we all had a terrific night of drinking and eating. One stand out member of the team was the really lovely "Maisy🤗". She was an absolute joy and a real credit to the Rivers Edge Restaurant as she was so friendly, polite, efficient and great fun. The staff in general were all superb and very friendly and made us all feel very much at home. If you have never eaten in this restaurant before we would all highly recommend as the quality of food and the service is exceptional. Thank you all for a fantastic two evenings of food and drink we will be back again!!🎅🎄👍👌😁🙋‍♂️Info only, plenty of parking is available for this restaurant behind the hotel. Also the views over the fast flowing River Avon which flow right next to the restaurant are stunning.

Overall terrible experience in a very dated, damp and creepy hotel. We stayed at the Rose & Crown for business and thankfully only 1 night. Most of our party had to change rooms as they were either damp and musty or just a bit creepy and when my colleague asked for an alternative room the guy on reception said ‘do you want Creepy or Cramped?’. I have to say most of the staff were friendly and polite but perhaps a more experienced member of staff should be on reception. Plus the breakfast was fairly decent although the orange juice they served up was more of a strange children’s squash rather than a juice, so the Legacy hotel group is definitely cutting corners everywhere! The only saving grace was the very nicely laundered linen on the beds and the big towelling robe but sadly my room didn’t feel that clean and has black mould around the inner window of the bathroom . Other than that I would NOT recommend anyone stay at here - it’s truly awful and you’re better off at the Premier Inn down the road.

If you want to actually get a nights sleep after paying for a hotel room do not stay here. Rooms have no sound proofing and if a wedding is on the rooms actually vibrate until late at night and no manager on site to help. If you want any compensation the hotel says you should have left and not stayed overnight. This response was made knowing that we had been out for a meal and a drink as we were on our holiday. We were unable to eat at the hotel due to the wedding so had walked into Salisbury. So awful customer service and endorsing drink driving apparently.

We had a lovely room which was upgraded from a Standard to a river view Superior room. I would like to just mention Isabel the receptionist who was very accommodating, cheerful and efficient. All the restaurant staff worked hard and the service was good and the view from the dining room is beautiful. The hotel is within walking distance of the City was a bonus as there is also a nice big car park. A really enjoyable stay which was a two day package with dinner and breakfast and a packed lunch on the second day.

Visited with 6 family members & 2 babies for a birthday Sunday lunch. Pros; beautiful setting & building, attentive service staff, good food & drink options. Cons; no allergen info displayed (& staff unsure & untrained) resulting in a member of our party requiring medication due to being served nuts in an unlabelled desert - no apology offered by management or chef. Roast dinner have Pre packaged sliced meat (& possibly microwaved or boiled in bag) meaning it’s tough & stringy, desserts are brought in. plain A4 printed menu lacking info on flavour & allergens as well as aesthetic creativity (add a border at least!) cheap cafe cutlery, mens & baby change toilets grubby & in need of refurb, light shades & chandeliers dusty/cobwebs. Staff could do with further drinks training.

From the moment we walked into the hotel we got that feeling that it would be good! It surpassed our expectations. The view from our garden room was amazing - including the river and the Cathedral spire in the distance through the trees. The room was very comfy and well appointed. The only slight negative was that the bathroom could have done with a little TLC. The staff were excellent, helpful, friendly, efficient and professional especially Marco in the restaurant/bar. The food was very very good and also very plentiful. The dining room also had wonderful views of the river and if you are lucky you May see a kingfisher too. The location suited us well as it was very peaceful but the car could be left in the carpark and it was a few minutes walk into Salisbury itself where there is so much to see and do.

This we were told was the old public bar. Deceived to stay in for a meal and were we not disappointed with the food on offer and the service. A good selection of beers. Another evening walk to see the cathedral lit up, which was a bonus. The following morning back to the restaurant for breakfast. Again this was excellent and we were pleased with the one way system in operation. My only complaint was that the bins were outside our room, however this may have because of a collection. We both slept extremely well even though there was a road outside by the front entrance. Amazed how quiet it was. Would definitely go back.

The service was exemplary and unusually the Irish coffee was perfectly presented. We loved the picturesque riverside venue and the whole experience, stayed the night in the hotel and recommend it highly.

Hmmm... the website considerably over sells. It states "relaxing tranquility and luxury accommodation" and "rooms have been lovingly restored to complement the original oak beams" and "Executive Rooms are spacious with some rooms located on the ground floor providing doors opening directly onto our garden and riverside watching the wildlife on the river and watching the sunset over the cathedral". This was most definitely not the case. This was our 4th night on a road trip round SW England and the last night was at The Rose and Crown. I tried to book 4 night's at charming "Inns". We got a room here in what felt like a conference centre in a corner of the hotel with a small window of light (room 11). To be honest it was very tired, bathroom had black mould and the view was of the car park, well actually slightly lower than the car park.I didn't book a table here for dinner as the restaurant didn't have a vibe, its a set up you'd expect from a standard basic chain hotel not an idyllic charming Inn.Really disappointed. We wanted to leave but decided not to ruin our last night. Maybe should've complained to the hotel on the night but I'm not confrontational and seriously what difference would it of made. I've paid for the room and don't expect a refund, but the hotel owner needs to have a serious look at room 10 (and I assume one or two others), the surrounding corridors and reception area and then look at the description on the website. Be honest with yourself. Its very unusual for me to leave a bad review if you take a look at my previous.

Had a really lovely experience at this venue on a Saturday afternoon. We enjoyed a trip down the river punting (third party - Salisbury punting - excellent) and then the restaurant made us a mixture of picnic baskets and afternoon teas outside in the sunshine. I was especially impressed with the picnic baskets. £15 per person, for a huge selection of items (we paid for 3 picnics and had many more than 1 item pp). Impressively everything was home made and utterly delicious - sausage rolls, quiche, scotch eggs, cheese and biscuits, salad, coleslaw, drum sticks and the most delicious roast beef and horseradish sandwiches I've ever had. There was more than enough per person. The avo tea was £15 per head, reasonable quantity for the price. (Actually far better than being forced to pay £30pp and having more than you could ever eat). The cakes were delicious, simple lemon cake was the best I've ever tasted. Good service. Really pretty location. We had a really lovely afternoon in the sun. Thank you. Highly recommended.

We are staying at this lovely hotel which I cannot fault. Booked dinner last night at the restaurant - location is perfect, and by the river with stunning views. They were not busy at all as I am sure they are limited to how many tables they can have occupied. The waiter took out order and brought drinks - the wine was unbelievably over-priced - a good £4 a glass more than any other place serving this wine - I was going to have a glass of Ara NZ Sauvignon blanc, but at £10.50 a glass gave it a big miss as this is served at my local at £7 a glass (250 mls). I ordered the goats cheese couscous - advertised as coriander couscous. My partner ordered the burger with fries. We waited almost an hour for the food to arrive and when it did it was stone cold. In fact we waited so long we almost walked out - no one came to see if we wanted another drink. The couscous has not a speck of coriander and was soggy and cold with one slice of half warmed goats cheese on top drizzled with balsamic vinegar. It was awful - tasteless and bland and not worth £15. I could have made this (hot too) at home for about £2.00Mark's burger was awful - 2 thin well over-cooked patties to the point they were chewy. One had a great big piece of thick 'skin' like gristle in. The fries were cold and greasy. Again, £15.Yes we realise you pay for the view and location but the menu was miserable - not a salad in sight which is what I would have liked. Such a shame as this place is truly lovely, but don't bother with the food as it is over-priced and the service is terrible.

The menu had something to suit everyone including a choice of Sunday roast, 4 vegetarian options, steak and several fish options. The young waitress was very helpful and all our meals and drinks were served very efficiently. The food was plentiful, tasty and enjoyed by all. After lunch we had tea on the terrace, where the waitress happily took some family photographs for us. All in all a very enjoyable afternoon. Large car park available, if on foot only 10 minutes walk from the Cathedral.

This is a very quaint place and I had a very nice room in the old part of the building. The room was a good size and well decorated, for some it may be too cold with the old windows (which are lovely) as the heating isn't controllable but it was perfect for me. It's position by the river makes this a very picturesque place and brilliant for a short walk into Salisbury past the cathedral. I ate in the dining room in the evening - reasonable food and not too badly priced. (The experience was ruined by 3 workman who were swearing continually on another table.)I would stay again if I'm in the area and I have already recommended it to friends.

We stayed here for one night - my husband and I, our 2year old and our 3 month old. The room and en suit was large and spacious and the hotel provided two travel cots with bedding. The service overall was excellent - the staff even found us iPhone chargers! Breakfast was very good - both the continental (included in our booking) and the cooked buffet (an extra £5.95). A really good selection on both, cereals yoghurt pastries fruit cheese and ham on the continental, really good quality sausages and bacon which is my usual check for a cooked breakfast! The breakfast staff were friendly and helpful - with the manager even offering to keep my breakfast warm for me when I had to stop eating halfway through and feed my baby. The only gripe was that room was really hot despite both radiators being off and no way to control our room temp other than opening the windows! The bathroom in particular was extremely hot, like a sauna!Other than that, a really good stay and it worked very well for us as a family in the one room too - whereas other hotels in the area would only offer having to book two rooms for the four of us - so we were really pleased :)

Riverside location, on the banks of the River Avon (lovely sitting). Room overlooking the river and a view of the cathedral, was comfortable, clean and tidy with ample wardrobe space. Bathroom clean & tidy, & shower had loads of pressure. Restaurant serves lovely food in both breakfast and dinner, with staff very friendly & helpful. Hotel close to the city centre (0.5 mile) and easily reached by walking, car or bus, with a bus stop outside hotel doors. Car park big enough for the size of hotel. Stayed in the Legacy Rose & Crown for a small family break, I would come again.

It was cold, very cold, our hotel had a very limited menu and we noticed this place within walking distance. I had the burger - it was average at best. My friend had fish and chips. The fish was over fried/cooked. Plates were cleared and the server asked us about dessert, we said yes to having a look at the menu.....15 minutes later still no dessert menu. It wasn't busy at all, only 3 other tables had guests. A lapse in simple service delivery.

An interesting evening as I went to dine for the first time here. I was informed by a some what grumpy member of the reception staff (who didn't feel the need to look up from her computer screen to address me) that the restaurant was down the hallway on the right but... "They might not have room for you they've got a couple of large parties." I am of course a party of one and felt that they may be able to squeeze me in somewhere so I decided I would try my luck....As you can imagine I thought that maybe I don't want to dine here, the 'large parties' sound raucous and uncontrollable so much so it's going to take every member of staff to contain their jovial behaviour.......!!!! Nothing of the sort.... Upon reaching the bar I was greeted by a very friendly barman who checked to see if there was in fact space.... There was, and he showed me to a table by the window with a view of the river... 'Perfect' I thought.... Table with a view.... The large parties were already tucking into their mains and the rest of the restaurant was pretty much empty.... It was at this point I idiotically tempted fate by thinking....'Give it 20mins and the food will be here then I'll walk back to my hotel for an early bath... Lovely' My time frame came and went.... Other couples were seated around me.... Served drinks, orders taken and then their food arrived..... I was still patiently waiting....Another chunk of time went by and the manager came over to tell me that the inattentive and quite rude waitress that had 'taken' my order in the first place had in fact not put it through the till and so I didn't have any food on order.... So I ordered again.... This time after about a 10-15 minute wait my food arrived and was actually really rather tasty... The sauce was a little bland but the presentation was perfect. By this time though it was encroaching 8.30 and I must admit I was starving having been in the restaurant for quite some time. I am incredibly pleased that the initial rude waitress did not return to my table and instead busied herself (doing what looked like very little) behind the bar and didn't approach my table for a second round of looking down her nose at me, I was in fact served by another lady that made polite conversation and I received my after dinner coffee in a timely fashion. Unfortunately I was in fact visiting the restaurant to have a look at their menu and to see if it would be suitable for a large gathering we are holding soon... I fail to see how, if they can't look after one person they will look after our large wedding party.I am grossly disappointed in this evenings experience and it really is such a shame that the inadequacy and rude behaviour of a couple of members of staff taints what should have been a lovely evening. I was offered my glass of wine on the house as a result of the mix up which was some compensation but if it had taken any longer I'm afraid to say I was ready to walk out before the food arrived and try my luck else where. A great shame to an otherwise well put together establishment.

As other reviewers have noted, you'll be hard-pressed to find a more serene setting than a window table that is scant yards from the slow-flowing river Avon. My wife and I decided to spend the night at the Legacy Rose and Crown and whilst there, thought it'd be rude not to eat in the restaurant for dinner.Initial impressions were good; a spacious and modern looking dining room with smiling and friendly staff let to us being seated at a table that overlooks the river and meadows leading down towards Salisbury Cathedral. It's impressive and a very pleasant surprise as the frontage of the hotel and restaurant don't disclose just how impressive a view you'll get. After a quick look at the wine list and a little discussion over the usual offerings that appeared there; a sauvignon blanc, a chardonnay, some reds in the form of merlot and shiraz and the obligatory rose, we decided upon a french Pays d'Oc chardonnay from Aimery. It was pleasant enough, if a little over priced, and had enough versatility to go with a range of foods.Onto the dinner menu and again, here we found a reasonable selection but nothing that sets the world on fire or pushes the boundaries of culinary experiences. Steak, chicken, some 'pub grub' staples and a couple of more up to date dishes in pork bellies, various fritters and salads. To begin, I opted for crab fritters and my wife went for the scallops. As tends to happen more and more these days, she had the better choice and I was let with a bit of food envy. Her scallops, although on the smaller side, were plentiful with a very pleasant sauce and a generous helping of bacon lardons which bought out the natural sweetness of the sea food. On the other hand, the crab fritters were particularly lack lustre. I had expected a crunch from the batter or perhaps a panko breadcrumb crust but instead had a soft sphere of crab meath that was over-floured and lacked any real zip; if blandness were a competition they'd be in with a good chance of first place. For mains, the wife choose well again with the cajun spiced chicken and fries and I opted for what, at least on the menu, sounded a dead cert for taste and satisfaction. The menu had it down as a pork schnitzel, fried duck egg and white rice. That was exactly what I got and unfortunately, that was exactly what I got. The elements of the dish; schnitzel, duck (I'm sure it was chicken though) egg and white rice were all cooked very well but the plate screamed out for a sauce to bring it together and was left lacking as the result of it's absence. The cajun chicken, despite looking like it might have just been collected from a Harvester take away, was actually very well cooked and the fries and sour cream dip which sat on the side were pleasant enough. It also came with a reasonably flavoured mixed salad which helped to cut through the carb heavy fries. Finally, we opted for mandarin cheese cake with orange sorbet (her) and rose water jellies with sweet cheese (me) for dessert. The cheese cake was very well made and surprisingly, had a clear taste of cheese which many other establishments have effectively forced out of recipes through an over use of sugar. The jelly was subtly flavoured with the rose water which I found just right but i suspect that some might prefer it to be slightly more flavoured, approaching the kind of taste one might find from a slab of Turkish Delight!Throughout, the waiting staff were on the ball and delivered a reasonably good service. Standing out from the pack was a young man named Deepak who really strived to meet the customers need and, at least to my mind, appeared to be the go to man for the whole restaurant. The other staff were there and attentive but didn't seem to push to find that extra bit of effort that can really make the difference to the dining experience. So in summary, a great location and dining room with a good staff that is let down by a lack of imagination in its menu and in the way it is executed by the kitchen. If the chef could match the magnificence of the location in the food that he delivers, I have no doubt this restaurant would be in contention as one of the best in Salisbury.

Booked on Hotwire, because staying away a lot on business I tend to use Premier Inns which 'as a rule' you know what you're going to get. So decided to see what Hotwire had to offer...a 4 star hotel for a bit less than the Premier Inn I had booked, so decided to opt for this unknown 4 star (in case you're not familiar with Hotwire, they don't tell you the name of the hotel until you've paid). Didn't know what to expect when I knew what I had 'got', even after looking at other reviews. Arrived at the Rose & Crown and was impressed with the character & obvious history the building was steeped in, coupled with stunning views from the room & restaurant, etc. The room....first of all on Hotwire I requested a double bed, I got 2 small singles! The bed linen & pillow cases were stained, there was hair in the bath & the shower head was a deep rusty brown...a breeding ground for Legionella? Disappointing after a long long day! The food in the bar area was of average quality at a price you'd expect to pay for a hotel meal. Could be an incredible hotel with some TLC applied to the refurb of the rooms...& the thorough cleaning of them! Overall disappointing! I'd rather have a nice room with a comfy bed after a hard day, than a historical building with nice scenery!

We were staying at the hotel and no matter which meal we went to (we had breakfast, Sunday lunch, dinners and afternoon teas there) the service was efficient and friendly, the food tasty and attractively served. I got the impression that the menu was chosen for what was in season and what they could get locally too, which showed in the quality. The portions were generous so we also felt it was value for money. One thing I think I should also mention is that there were two parties going on on the Saturday night, one in the separate function room and a larger table in the restaurant- neither affected the service or food for the other guests - gold start all round!

We stayed at the hotel for two nights in February 2016, arriving on the Sunday afternoon. After settling into our room and seeking our evening meal we went to the restaurant and had the Sunday roast that is served throughout the afternoon and evening. As would be expected the meal was adequate and of the same standard as a carvery.although much more expensive at £9.50 per head. There is an a la carte menu but that did not appeal. The following evening after a day in Salisbury and having had luch in the city, my wife and I did not want a full meal but decided to have a bar snack (or room service) menu. Although we did eventually get what we wanted there was an initial reluctance to serve us and that did not endear their customer service to me. The view form the restaurant is fantastic as it overlooks the river Avon and the meadows leading to the cathedral, which can be seen beyond. The morning breakfast is either a free continental style one of pastries, cereal, fruit juice, toast, tea or coffee, along with had-boiled eggs or a full English breakfast, which you pay for. An adequate restaurant for the hotel guest which is both clean and well appointed, but the overall quality of the food provided does let it down.

The only two items that let the hotel down was a cooked breakfast is extra and towels with holes in them. The staff were very pleasant and helpful. With roads closed or completely impassable due to the severe rain from Storm Bert, we finally gave up trying to get home late on Sunday evening and parked up in the car park of the Bolingbroke. Too worried to go any further, we nervously knocked on the door, despite the pub being officially closed, and to our relief was invited in and offered a room for the night. Jo and Rob looked after us all evening, the room was clean and perfect for the emergency overnight stay and even made us breakfast before we set off in the morning. I can thank you both enough for your hospitality and kindness in what was, quite literally, an incredibly stressful occasion. Would recommend to anyone and even planning a return trip, under better conditions, to come back and say thank you once again. Wonderful. Ray and Marion

We visited on a Sunday for breakfast. Arriving a couple of minutes after 10am (opening time), we queued for a table and then again to order food. There were plenty of tables but appreciated it was busy - not all tables were full. We waited for 50 minutes for our food to arrive, although coffee arrived much earlier. This was prompted by us asking where our food was/checking the order had been made, to which we were told ‘we’d just have to wait because it was busy’. The food arrived 5 minutes later. The food was tasty and we’ve no complaints about the quality or price. But, something about the system here just doesn’t make sense, queuing at every point and then waiting another 50 minutes for scrambled eggs on toast and a bacon sandwich, doesn’t make sense. We arrived at 10 and didn’t leave until 12:15…. People had started arriving for lunch! Sadly, we’d not return. There are just other places nearby that are doing it better.

We visited with family from France with dog who were looking forward to visiting for coffee and a light snack for lunch,we arrived on a dry bright Sunday lunch, although relatively busy, there were several tables empty, albeit full of dirty leftovers, when we pointed this out to the lovely girl behind d counter she promptly cleared table and wiped, from this point expectations fell away quickly, there was absolutely nothing to eat except carrot cake or muffins fresh or pre packed biscuits and flapjack ! We mentioned this to the counter staff who just said sorry were short staffed and low on food, there were 8 members of staff behind the counter ! Oh well, we ordered coffee which hit the spot first round fine, second round incorrect, then members of our party wished to visit the loo before leaving, a queue of several people waiting constantly to use 1 toilet that was disgustingly dirty from top to bottom ! All in all a poor experience of what some 18 months ago was a lovely place to visit, maybe it was just an Off day, but to have that many staff not doing a lot or cared a lot, not sure I would be in a hurry to revisit
