Wonderful traditional pub, with a welcome and friendly atmosphere. Good pub menu covering something for all , including a good vegan choice. The food was very well cooked and hearty portion sizes. This place in winter would be very cosy, as had a good sized opan fireplace. Is has car park and small outdoor seating area.

I stayed for one night whilst working in the Grimsby/Scunthorpe area for a couple of days. My single room was fine with some lovely touches (delicious biscuits, a useful sewing kit, gorgeous soft towels...). The bedroom desk afforded ample space to work and it was lovely and peaceful all evening and beyond. My en suite seemed relatively new and the warm shower couldn't be faulted. I didn't venture into the bar but the plethora of gins available were seriously tempting! Breakfast is served at just about anytime that suits and wow what a breakfast! A table of cereal, fruit, yoghurt, juice, toast etc to start followed by a hot breakfast of one's choosing. My Lincolnshire sausages were sumptuous and the service couldn't have been friendlier. I'd like to have stayed longer but I said my goodbyes and headed for Scunthorpe (about a 20 min drive). Very reasonably priced and highly recommended.

The tavern is a hive of activity, food to die for, dogs welcome, breakfast provided (with an option of packed lunch as an alternative) packed lunches were fabulous. The accommodation is in a different building which has been purposely built. The rooms are a good size with drink making facilities and a fridge. The whole setup is brilliant and the staff are 2nd to none. A thoroughly enjoyable 5 days.

The first thing you see when you eat is your knife and fork, I have eaten 3 times here and every time we have had dirty crockery and the cheapest miss match I have ever hade put in front of me , it's been nearly 2 years since I last visited and I said then I would never eat their again, but I have and it was worse than last time . The food was just awfull , if I'm paying nearly £18 for a steak I expect a fork that doesn't bend & with our other meals at least a matching knife and fork not something resembling something discarded from a greasy Joe's Does the proprietor not know he can buy a first class crockery setting from Asda , Tescoes, Argos , for round about £7, but even then they won't make the food taste or look any better, if they must fill your plate to capacity At least use plates big enough for what you put on them instead of piling items on top of each other. The overall impression we got was, cheap produce, served with cheap utensils. Will I go again to eat their again Absolutely not ,I'd sooner give my money to a charity.

I have always said people expect too much from carvery, they are what they are and no where near fine dining. For what you pay here it is good value and for a pleasant change carved and served by someone who obviously cares about his customers and what they want. The meal was ok and to be honest slightly better than the average pub carvery although I found it a tad cold. The big let down here is the ambiance or lack of it. The dining room is very dated and not at all welcoming. Coffee is very well served and just how I like it so top marks for that and the staff who were very pleasant and accomadating. The place needs some investment and I am sure that will come as I got a feeling this is very much a work in progress. Enjoyed our visit here and hopefully the owners will go on and improve it further by upgrading the dining area which I a, sure will pack this place out.

Booked in here for a 2 night stay with a friend for the 1940's weekend at nearby Crowle. The rooms were in a separate building to the back of the car park behind the pub and were very nice. Modern and clean with plenty of room. Usual tea/coffee facilities etc. What I liked was the fact that it was lovely and quiet and looked over the car park. Area to sit outside at the back if you wanted. The breakfast was lovely, very well cooked (poached eggs were perfect) and the proprietor was friendly and chatty. My only gripe was that I booked through booking.com and the price quoted was lower than the price I actually paid, although I didn't realise this until I checked the paperwork afterwards. I think we paid extra for the breakfast when it should have been included. Saying that, we have re-booked for next year and I would recommend this to fellow travellers.

We visited the tavern this evening with our family and children age from 2 years old to eight years old the landlord was welcoming and polite. However the landlady was rude as hell and made us feel like 2nd class citizens, we spent £40.00 in the pub and she humiliated us by telling us out loud in front of everybody how badly behaved our children was (everywhere else we have ever took the children we have had compliments on the children's good behaviour) . It's safe to say we will not be back under any circumstances THIS IS NOT A FAMILY FRENDLY PUB!!! If you didn't want children in the pub you should not have served us then dictated to us, we were made to feel DEGRADED, UNWELCOME AND ASHAMED OF OUR LOVELY FAMILY!!!!!!

We went for our Sunday dinner yesterday and were so impressed with this cosy, country pub. The staff were welcoming from the moment we walked in the door. We had a short wait before we were called through for our meal. They do this because the dining room is quite small and it saves having queues at the carvery. The guy who serves is so friendly. I had the beef and pork with home made chestnut stuffing and sage and onion stuffing. The plates are small but he encourages you to come back if you want more. I asked for two slices of the beef and pork for my disabled son and the guy said 'Are you sure that's enough? Come back round if he wants more?" Well, that's the first time I've been to a carvery and told to come back for more! He encouraged you to have as much meat as you wanted and yorkies as well. The veg was self serve, plentiful, varied and hot. There was a choice of roast and mash potato, carrots, parsnips, leeks and cauliflower with apple sauce, cranberry sace and horseradish and lovely home made gravy. We didn't have pudding because we were really full but there was a good selection on the board and the ones that were coming out looked really yummy. I would definitely recommend this place. It is a proper country pub with excellent food and great atmosphere. We will certainly be returning in the near future.

Went for the Sunday carvery. Not having booked we had to wait a short while for a table but not excessive. The room was quite small and there was a big table sat right nexy to the carvery. This meant that the queue for the carvery had to double back on itself and you were clambering all over each other a little. The meat was plentiful and the veg selection was small but adequate and cooked well. The gravy though was situated quite high up and seemed very awkward to get to. You could easily spill it if not careful. Also...some white rubber handled serving spoons would be better for the veg because the metal handles were getting very hot under the heatlamps. The deserts had a good selection...although the cheesecake that one of us ordered was still frozen in the middle. Another slice was offered but we took the refund instead. Staff were very pleasant and attentive. If there were subtle changes made this would be an awesome find. The carvery needs moving...or the tables need arranging so the queue can flow. The gravy needs to be at a lower level. And the deserts should never come out frozen. All in all...the food was enjoyable...but getting it on the plate...not so much.

I was visiting Amcotts over the weekend and stayed at a friend who raved about the Carvery being divine. So naturally, we went on the Sunday and treated ourselves to the £6.95 (essentially all you can eat) Sunday Roast. The meats were succulent and served by the Tavern's friendly and welcoming chef/owner, Gordon, who indulged in my guilty pleasure in having the 'fatty bits' of the meat. The veg were just the right amount of cooked as many Carveries tend to over-cook and make them mushy, the mash was creamy as can be and the gravy.. Oh my, ALL the gravy! Wonderful experience all around, would definitely urge you to visit if you are around the area! They also do really nice vegetarian options!

Idly driving on the Isle of Axholme on a sunny Sunday, my wife and I stopped at The River Don Tavern for a carvery lunch and were very pleasantly surprised by the warm welcome we received. The Bar area was clean and tidy with a shine to the furniture and some good background music; we were served with drinks right away and had barely sat down when we were shown to a table in the restaurant. The owner/chef, who was the most amiable host we had met in a very long time, served us with generous portions from a selection of roasted joints of meat, Yorkshire puddings and two varieties of stuffing; engaging us in humorous conversation as he piled our plates. In addition to mashed and roast potatoes there were six other varieties of vegetables and plenty of delicious gravy and sauces to help ourselves to. We thoroughly enjoyed our meal and were looked after by attentive staff who ensured everything was to our liking and that our drinks were replenished. All in all, a really good experience that I have already recommended to family and friends. Although the premises are those of a fairly typical country pub, the service and ambience are a long way from the norm. The meal was very good value for money ......... go and try it for yourself.

Stayed here on business, having booked through Late Rooms without doing any research. Price for B&B was very good indeed but I wasn't sure what to expect. I needn't have worried ; the accommodation is very modern and clean (with toiletries and a chocolate - nice touch), the service was very good and friendly (bar and restaurant) and the beer lived up to its CAMRA awards. I had dinner in the evening and it was traditional pub fayre and lots of it. Breakfast in the morning was also very good. Could not fault the service, including the fact that they made a special effort to enable me to check-in at 3pm (which is before the pub opens). Would definitely return on business or for leisure. So much better than faceless chain hotels and probably cheaper too, despite headline rooms rates which the chains advertise.
