Unfortunately the worst burger I ever had. The meat was just awful - sorry I can't find nicer words. Service staff was nice. Chips were ok.

Could tell the food was out of a jar/ packet/ freezer. Nothing tasted fresh, and the atmosphere was dead.

We had a mixed experience here. While the atmosphere is great and some of the staff is very friendly and forthcoming, others make you feel a little unwelcome. The soup of the day (carrot) was delicious, while a bit too garlicky. The pizza from the kids menu our wee one had was really good in taste and size. I had lasagna which was really good while a bit small for its rather high price. The baked potato left me wondering though, as it probably was the smallest of its kind I have seen so far. That would not have been so bad had it not also been the most expensive I had in Scotland yet. So when in the area again I will choose another restaurant.

We had a voucher for food only. Went on Monday 16 September. The woman serving told us the a la carte wasn't available. We asked if we could partially redeem our voucher and use the rest at a later date and we're told "no" Attitude was shocking. We'll just lose the voucher rather then go back.

Food was good, but not special. Service was very good, friendly and accommodating. Personally, the music was way too loud for me and wasn't that comfortable.

Perfect Fish and Chips dish! Cocktails were also fantastic.

Terrible lunch, tried this place as looked lovely from outside and interior was inviting however the penne Arrabbiata was horrible! it was tasteless, overcook and tasted like a microwave meal ( wouldn’t be surprised If it was ). how can you get pasta that wrong ? My other friend had soup and sandwich, soup was cold and tasteless and sandwich was just a basic white bread sandwich with cheap ham. We mentioned all this to the waiter who said sorry but nothing else and still paid the full bill. I think this is just pretending to be Italian as nothing authentic about it . I’d avoid!

Visited Riva on a nice sunny afternoon in Helensburgh. Aesthetically, the place looks good, though I am afraid that as far as food and service goes, it is a letdown. When you read the consensus of opinion on reviews, they are right, with average food and very poor service. I had been in when it first opened, and it had potential, but sadly, it has lost focus. The menu is basic, with usual fayre on offer, though they allude to being italian/Mediterranean in style. We had a couple of pizzas. The place was quiet, and it took 40 minutes. Timings aside, we were in no rush. When they arrived, they did not have the toppings as described. I find this concerning. Is it a badly run kitchen or a total disregard of standards? The staff seemed to swan around with no direction with the customer service an afterthought. This place could be so much better with a modicum of customer focus and a simplified pizza/pasta menu. The emphasis should be on quick efficient service. Considering people are conscious of spending money when considering going out, Riva is going to struggle moving forward, especially in off-season.

We waited 5 minutes to be seated, we weren’t so found our own table. No cutlery on the table. We waited 15 minutes before we received a menu. The older male and female who worked there had an unsettling demeanour, although we waited so long to be served, they were unapologetic and we felt like we were annoying them. The male manager was wearing running shoes with jeans, not what we expected with the prices being what they are. The service was non existent, no one spoke to us or made us feel welcome. The manager(s) seemed much more interested in the customers who had hotel reservations. The portion were less than satisfying, the quality of meat was poor. The toilets were extremely clean.

Had soup and sandwich. Couldn't eat the soup because of the amount of salt in it. Had a cheese sandwich, pan bread, the whole thing was yuk. Never got anything off the cost of the lunch. Never again.

Friendly service. Let down by mediocre food, even by pub standards. Starter portion sizes are disappointing for the price.

This is ideally placed for a vibrant restaurant. I was very underwhelmed. Competent, friendly service let down by ?management?

Staff are great. Lovely environment and atmosphere inside. Nice small bar. Pizza is delicious and take way is cheaper than Padrone’s. The drinks are expensive though - a can of fizzy orange is £3 to take out. 😮

Friendly, comfortable hotel. Positives: friendly staff, nice cocktails,nice sea view room. Adequate breakfast and good shower. Minor negatives : Bosch tassimo coffee machine but with no pods and a full length mirror would be good.

I can't really find words for this. We didn't expectvto eat anything special that night and then we found this nice little place. The food was absolutely amazing. It tasted like home and as if the chef really loves what he does. Furthermore the service team was so friendly. Thanks a lot to the Riva team!

Really enjoyed a warm welcome from the attentive staff. We had the excellent parsnip and apple soup followed by a portion of vegetable lasagne and the Cumberland sausage. All really tasty. Toilets clean, venue pleasant, a nice atmosphere. Plenty of car parking nearby and certainly wasn’t the most expensive dish we have had. To be recommended.

I went to Helensburgh for the day and had the joy of stopping at Riva for a few drinks. The staff Faith, Ruby, Daniel and Scott were all wonderful and extremely helpful with recommendations!

This place used to be great, we would come here often but it’s really gone downhill in the past couple years. I called about a last minute lunch reservation. A nice girl on the phone said they had tables available for lunch and we said great we’d be there shortly and all seemed fine. When we arrived a very rude woman asked us if we had a booking. I said no we didn’t and she said they don’t have any tables and that we need a booking. I told her I’d just called the restaurant and explained the call I’d had and how the woman on the phone said to come down for lunch and that they had space for us. She said no they hadn't received a call (I double checked after this and I did have the correct restaurant/number when I called). She was rude and unhelpful and didn’t seem to care about our experience, and on top of that the place was absolutely empty apart from one table. This solidified our choice to not come back again. Save yourself the disappointment and go somewhere else.

Fantastic quality great value and very friendly staff. Would definitely recommend this restaurant. We will definitely be revisiting soon .

My car got stuck in snow. I was freezing and hungry and in need of using a toilet desperately. The gentleman let me without questioning or asking any questions. Honestly I cannot describe how bad our visit was to this establisment... To start things of, it took them over 10 minutes to notice us before we eventually got taken to our table. Once browsing our menus, we were ready to order... this is when we get told a number of items on the menu are sold out. Alright fair enough this can happen, but what really tore me apart was the attitude of the server we had. Obviously we were asking questions to what was available after finding out we cannot order what we want, this is when we were hit with a very snarky eye roll followed by a cheeky comment which was extremely unprofessional. To top this all of, when we eventually got our food it was cold. You could tell it was leftover from earlier on in the day. After this occuring, we had enough and asked for the bill then proceeded to leave to a local spoons just down the road. Would not recommend.

My wife and I attended with friends on Sunday night for a pre booked meal. On arrival was seated then it started. We were informed that there was no Steak, no sea bass, only 5 burgers left, 3 prawn linguine, and so on and only had apple or pecan pie for desert. We considered leaving at that time but thought we’ll just go with. Ordered chicken tenders for starters but then was informed that there was none left. We decided to finish our drinks and leave as it was a total shambles. The staff were embarrassed and they were really nice but come on, it’s only 5pm and 3/4 of the menu is missing. I think who ever is doing the food order for the week should be shown where the door is and let someone who can count do it. However, on the bright side the drinks we had were given free of charge. We have been a few times and always been good so don’t know what’s happened but surely can’t go on. Staff we’re great but as a business not good.

Eaten here a few times now and the food is delicious. Service by Dee on each occasion was impeccable ensuring we were okay and topped up with drinks.

We are regular diners at Riva but sadly this last visit was very disappointing. The menu had been cut down, no Lasagne now. I chose a chicken starter as my main but they didn't have any. So I chose a burger instead, it was ok but I wouldn't have it again. My partner chose the Diavolo Pizza but got a different pizza. They had no Grouse whisky or any other blended whisky and they didn't have my usual wine. We won't be rushing back 😏

I'm a first time customer at The Riva, I went in for some lunch, it was quiet so I was seen to straight away. I ordered the "mini" pizza to start with Haddock and Chips to follow. The "mini" pizza was great, but there was nothing mini about it. I was presented with this huge pizza. Haddock and Chips was big too. You certainly won't leave hungry. I'll be skipping dessert too.

Visited a few times already. Latest visit with my husband for lunch. Menu was short but something for everyone. Drinks are made well and staff are very pleasant and accommodating. The restaurant was cosy and clean.

Staff, seem untrained and all stood around "hovering". Ordered our drinks, then ordered our meal. Lamb seemed to be the one main meat dish, my wife ordered lamb, several minutes later staff member came and said Chef say there's no Lamb. She reordered Pizza i ordered Habock and Chunky chips, mushy peas and Tarta sauce, it came with French fries. Neither the fish or chips were tasty at all. The Pizza was what tasted like Cheddar cheese . Personally I suggest you give it a BIG MISS !!

£120 a night for a room above a noisy pub, the window opens onto the bar terrace, obscured by some green netting 2 feet from the window. Clever pictures on Tripadvisor won’t show this. The bathroom. Door is 50% Clear! This means that when having your morning ablutions, anyone sharing your bed is 3 feet from watching you! No one needs that. There is no air con. And the room was 28 degrees. No fan was offered. Bare electrical wires hanging from the bottom of the TV. And we had booked an executive room… There was not even enough room to put our bags on the floor without tripping over them. The door lock didn’t work properly, and there was a delay of an hour for any food ordered… Needless to say we didn’t bother staying. It was less hassle to drive 4 hours home than have a crap nights sleep to drive home in the morning. In essence, don’t bother, stay somewhere else.

Was served by the tall dark haired girl, I think she must have been the manager - if she’s not she should be because she was outstanding. However the ed Sheeran looking guy on bar was hostile and standoffish, would have felt unwelcome had it not been for the waitresses efforts to make us feel at home. Our waitress seemed to be running all over the place to ensure we were all seen to, seems like she was compensating for the lack of effort from other staff and very impressed with her ability to run the place seemingly single-handedly. Impressed with the food, but there appears to be a lack of leadership on the floor, with the red haired guy openly making efforts to undermine our waitress, which made things uncomfortable for us. If it hadn’t been for her it would not have been a 4 star review.

A stop while travelling to Glasgow.

Went to lunch with family on the 31 August, new lunch menu was lovely and value for money. Staff very attentive and food was amazing, We had the prawn linguini which I think was 8 or 9 pound and lamb pitta & smoked salmon bagel think was £7 which you could add soup for £1 all looked and tasted lovely, will be returning very soon.

On vacation and stopped in Helensburgh for a quick stop. Decided on Riva for lunch. Good choice,soup and artisan bread delicious as was the warm smoked salmon bun with chips you remember your mum making. Would definitely recommend. Good service as well.

First time visiting Riva restaurant they had such a nice interior..the cocktails are really good, we got Caesar salad and truffle Parmesan fries it was so tasty . Great service too I will visit again ☺️

My wife and i visited Riva , and to say it was bad is a understatement, starter of mussels was fine,from there it went down hill very fast, my wife ordered Lasagne it served burnt so much you could not get a knife and fork through it , they replaced it and low and behold it was the same, except the put a piece of cheese on top and melted it,the chef spent more time in the restaurant than the kitchen, a young lad in shorts and T- shirt was in and out of the kitchen area not very health and safety.felt sorry for the 2 waiters who kept saying sorry for something that was not there fault, would not recommend this place what's so ever.

Booked for a belated birthday lunch for my friend as she'd never been to Riva before. She was so impressed that she's taking me back for my birthday! From the moment we walked in, to the moment we left, the staff were fantastic. Attentive but not in your face. The food arrived quickly & was delicious. We picked the 2 courses for £14.95 which is great value & both went for a main & pud. The tiramisu which to be honest we could've shared as it was a very generous portion was the nicest I've tasted but I still managed to eat all of mine & enjoyed every delicious spoonful! We both had a lovely lunch & will be back soon. Thank you.

Not great! Scallops were not as advised suppost to be on cauliflower puree came swimming in tomato sauce chefs didn't inform poor waiter . Lucky we didn't have allergy isn't it! Pizza was horrible. Cheesecake like the frozen ones in supermarket ...menu given on piece of paper and no description. Great waiter , what looks like the manageress just sitting down constantly applying lip gloss , cold coffee , long wait trying to get attention but they were to busy serving chef a pint . Chefs nonstop in and out of kitchen irritating, especially sitting near the door. Won't be back

Was there last week, got a fish and chips burger and chips and a coke and irnbru £37.50 yet on menu it said £12.50 for each of the mains fish was tiny and burger cold never finished it. Will definitely not go there again. But staff were pleasant. Young fellow came up with cutlery five minutes after meal was served so not impressed as place was not busy. Plus staff never told us about specials.

After four phones calls; each one being left on hold for some time, we eventually booked a table for us and our friends. We arrived on time (7pm) but were asked to wait as our table wasn’t ready. We gave a drinks order but were left waiting for a considerable time (20mins) for our drinks to arrive. Having ordered red wine, we were given a mixture of glasses that seemed a bit odd. We then ordered food, and waited patiently. A short time later, the waiter returned to tell us that three of the dishes ordered were no longer available. We again waited. Then the waiter returns to say that one of the dishes ordered for four people, only had three portions left. A new dish was ordered. Once we had finished our starters, the waiting staff continued to pass by us, leaving the back door open all the time. There was a gale blowing through the door. At one point we noticed the waiter eating pizza beyond the doorway. Clearly, there was no time for him to actually enjoy a break, as he was standing, then having to rush to get orders from the kitchen. Our starter plates remained at our table. When the lasagne, ordered for three people arrived, it was clear that one of the portions was easily half the size of the other portions. When raised with the waiter, he said that the chef had told him there was only enough for two portions left. It was difficult to understand if this meant that he’d cut up two portions to make them three. At £14.95 just for lasagne and two tiny bits of garlic bread, this was not acceptable. He agreed to remove the cost for one from the bill. We also ordered two portions of chips. Three arrived, in tiny cups - £3.95 for a portion? You’re having a laugh! We finished our mains and waited to offered dessert or coffee. That offer never arrived. We asked for the bill and were, by this stage, unsurprised that extra dishes had been added to our bill, the half portion lasagne was still included, and our £80 deposit had not been deducted. We queried the bill. We then waited for 20 minutes for the bill to be returned, still wrong! The staff were so frustrated, and not reassuring us at all. No offer of compensation was made, and we left having had a terrible experience. We will definitely not be back.

Second time here in as many weeks, mussels to start then crab tagliatelle , both delicious, we sat in the sun with our meals etc watching the world wander past. I've said it before and will say it again, if you haven't tried Riva for lunch/dinner you're missing out, obviously depending on your palate, we have been twice and eaten different food and all have been delicious and huge(we couldn't finish again) service was really good too, the staff really do try their best to please you.

Had a lovely overnight in hotel with excellent breakfast in morning. First class service.

I liked the pasta and the staff, generally a cozy place

Unfortunately the whole experience was a disaster - we left without eating. Service was lukewarm, had to ask for drinks and food order. Watery Strawberry Daiquiri that wasn't served with ice. Warm glasses for wine. Then when food arrived 3 of the dishes were wrong. No chicken on one of the pizzas. Lamb served without potatoes or carrots as specified on menu. Just on spring greens ordered as a side! When we complained to male member of staff he said menu was changing so that's why order was different. One female member of staff tried to be helpful but had no power to sort it out. Also extra charge for planting a tree added to bill when not stipulated anywhere on menu. Very disappointing as had previously enjoyed visits. Management need to sort staff out - maybe a visit from Gordon Ramsay could return Riva to former glory?

WORST RESTAURANT IN HELENSBURGH! We have had many disappointing visits to Riva which had led us to write this review. After our last bad experience over a year ago we decided to give it another chance tonight. We called to order one Hawaiian pizza with garlic dip and was surprised to have an answer on the phone from someone friendly and professional who later turns out to be the manager, told us to collect in 20mins. When arriving at Riva we were met with puzzled faces of two staff members. They were confused after chatting between themselves that no one had taken the order or given it to the kitchen. We were asked to sit down and they would get one made up. As always staff members not on shift were chatting to the bar staff having drinks. One of them was actually very nice and tried to console our disappointment that yet again we had been let down by Riva. At this point the small chat and effort made by Christine turned our mood around and we left happy enough. We live locally and got home to a plain pizza - no toppings. So going back down we took the pizza back and explained we asked for a Hawaiian. It was sent back to the kitchen and now being after 9pm were told the chefs are getting ready to leave and putting their jackets on. Getting the pizza home we opened it up to reveal the same pizza we gave back with raw pineapple placed on top - no ham. It must have been reheated as now burnt around the edges. Having has so many terrible customer experience this was the one time we could not let it go and went back down to return the pizza and ask for a refund. Being from Helensburgh we eat out regularly and urge anyone to try all the other fantastic eateries. We don't understand how Riva can get awards for such poor service time and time again over the years. Needless to say we wont be back again.

I'm pretty sure under normal circumstances this would be an excellent restaurant with a 5 star review. It's popular with locals and tourists, wide menu, nice decor and really lovely hardworking waitresses. However, last night there was some sort of issue with the chef and...

Food was okay (Cesar salad, pizza). Unfortunately, I felt sick afterwards and was no longer of any use the following day.

The bartenders tonight are very excellent! They are honestly doing too much: most places would have them strictly bar and these two are serving tables, bussing and everything else on top of making stellar cocktails, but they're still on top of it all.

We had heard mixed reviews so decided to give it a go for ourselves. Place was nice and cosy, we had the bolognese and pizza, both were delicious! Price wasn’t too bad either..

Very nice Italian restaurant with an excellent variety of beers on tap. Food was very nice, and the Pizza was excellent. Staff were very helpful although service was a bit slow.

Food - delicious Staff - very nice Only negative is getting orders taken was quite slow and on the pricey side but all in all a lovely meal and the young girl serving us was lovely. Pity we never caught her name.

Thanks for the service and the music. The staff is nice and the place is beautiful but honestly that was one of the worst "Italian food" experience I've got in my life. If you like Italian pizza (like the napolitan one) you are not at the good place. The staff and the place are the only reasons to don't put 1 star. I won't came back.

Moules Mariniere to start. A good portion of Mussels served in a delicious sauce with a slice of bread on the side. A very tasty dish which was also good value. I had the Spaghetti Carbonara as a main. It wasn’t too creamy, but it tasted nice with plenty of Pancetta and topped with Parmesan. 2 courses for £13.50 was excellent value for money.

Stay on the 16/17 november. Seem ok to start with then given a sea view room, which had a construction site view. Next day coffee cups left dirty and supplies not restocked. Bath room cold water tap falls off retaining nut not on, glass shelf...

Went in here for lunch during a little birthday outing with my sister - what a great find. Lunch menu wasn't extensive but not a bad thing (in my opinion) and had something for most tastes. Great fresh food, good sized portions, great prices, friendly staff and lovely relaxed surroundings. Ticked all my boxes. Would recommend and will definitely be back.

Disappointed with the standard of the food, Chicken was dry and the pasta was overcooked
