This Restaurant won us over! Norman, our waiter, made our visit exceptional with his warmth and efficiency. And oh, the pizzas! A perfect blend of ingredients and flavors. A top choice for delicious pizza and fantastic service!

Just about the worst pizzas we've ever had! Ordered for pick-up (to make sure to get the food as hot as possible) and was at the restaurant when the boxes came out of the kitchen. Ten minutes later at home the pizzas were on the table, and just a quick look was enough to realise this was going to be bad. Both our pizzas were thin and dried-out - clearly over-cooked and not much short of burnt. I had ordered a Margherita with pepperoni, anchovy, and olives. They apologies for having no anchovies, but l had to hunt to find the very few slices of pepperoni and only half the slices had even one little piece of olive. I've never seen a pizza served with such miserly toppings! Being over-cooked it was dried out and basically tasteless. My wife's pizza mafioso was only slightly better, but in her case the cheese was all on one side of the pizza so the slices on the other side were basically cheese-less. She had ordered garlic bread, but the two small slices she got were very old stale bread with little butter and over-cooked to the point of being burnt black on the edges. It's not as if the restaurant kitchen was busy - the restaurant was totally empty and there was no one else waiting for take-away. For the benefit of others, I should point out that Rio was originally quite a good restaurant and we had many enjoyable meals there. But I am talking about the situation 10-15 years ago. After the restaurant was incorporated fully into the Argyll Hotel it began a period of slow and steady decline. We haven't eaten there for quite a few years so we were not prepared for how far below standard it has fallen. That might also explain how it was totally empty on a Friday night, when in the old days it was never empty and often quite full. The truncated menu is sufficient to show that it is no longer attempting to be an Italian restaurant - there are as many curry dishes as there are proper Italian main courses. Sad. I feel rather sorry for the people who work there, who were helpful and friendly.

Lovely food and great service. The restaurant is part of the hotel attached and the menu for both are available if you ask.

I visited Dunoon for the first time, it was an unplanned trip so didn’t have a restaurant booked. Many were full and we came across “Rio” like others have said, now I know why. The meals arrived, mine was ok, my partners pizza was swimming in oil and was dripping on to the plate. Throughout the meal the waiter appeared to be very stressed although there was only a few tables in, constant comments were made about others not helping him and even personal remarks about people’s children who had got up and ran to the toilet. He stated “this isn’t a play area” etc which fair enough I understand but it’s really unprofessional to be making remarks in front of others. If something has to be said about telling children to sit or be accompanied let the parent know and not everyone else trying to enjoy a dining experience. In all honestly we both felt very uncomfortable throughout our meal with cutlery plates etc being slammed down at the serving station and constant huffs and puffs and rants from the waiter which carried on throughout our entire meal. When I asked for the bill while my partner was at the restroom I’m sure I heard him mutter something about “being on my phone” but can’t be sure. Every time he passed our table he was making comment about something. We would have stayed for another drink or so but in all honesty it was the most stressful meal out and didn’t want to point out the poor food or ask for anything for the fear of angering someone further. I really didn’t want to write a poor review, but this happened a few days ago and to be honest is still annoying me and really has dampened my experience of visiting Dunoon for the first time.

Not many places to eat in Dunoon and most aren't receptive to walk-ins, tried rio as it was quiet, now we know why..... Upon entering, we were greeted with immediate, under the breath, complaining about no staff and little assistance within the restaurant, was rudely pointed in the direction of some free tables while further negative utterings were made, we picked a table, not sure if it was, again, causing annoyance.... while browsing the menu a larger group entered, had clearly booked, for birthday celebration, to which further, under the breath mutterings ensued 'more for me to do myself''I'll just make the food myself too' etc. etc. overall all this just exasperated a visit to the area, awful hotel, awful service, awful experience, I feel embarrassed that this is in my country and feel bad that this may be a foreign tourists experience to our wonderful country, we have a lot to learn about hospitality......

What positive can I give this restaurant... none. We booked as a group while working in the area. The menu is the most random assortment of psedo Italian food I've ever seen. A wine list with no Italian wine on it apart from Prosecco. Starters were mediocre. 2 of the party waiting for 10 minutes after the rest had been served. Pizzas under cooked for one person, overcooked for another, no sauce for the Calzone. Very greasy food in general. Service was slow and indifferent. Unfortunately, due to the area and lack of places to eat, the staff don't seem bothered. In all, a very poor experience and would not return.

We both had the lasagne and it was lovely and generous portions. Restaurant ambience was nice. No italian wine on the menu of an italian restaurant! The wine we did have was a bit thin!

The food here is normally alright. However we had a disappointing experience this evening - we phoned to ask if tables were available just after 20:00 this evening. The man we spoke to on the phone said it was fine for our two adults and one child. We arrived and as we walked through the door we were told by another man that children weren't allowed on the premises after 8pm. I explained that we'd phoned ahead and been told that we could have a table. I could understand children not being allowed in the bar for meals after a certain time, per the licence, but we were trying to dine in the restaurant. 8yo was very disappointed. We live locally but don't expect we'll be back.

Menu outside Restaurant included pizza. Went in and told no pizza, only “normal menu and Indian street food”. After 10 mins The waiter took our menus off us bbut didn’t take order? I called him back and he took order. After 30 mins our order still didn’t arrive in full. After enquiries was told that our waiter was “the owners son” and he normally “forgets things” and unfortunately food wasn’t sent through to kitchen.! Manager apologized but said she couldn’t do anything about it as it was owners son that served us. OWNER SORT YOURSELF OUT!!

Visited last night during our week away in Argyll. Lovely meal for us and 2 Grandkids. Best meal of the whole week. Couldn't fault it in any way. And, a very decent price too.

My wife and I visited this restaurant and I have never been so disappointed in an establishment ever. The manager met us with sarcasm and we should have left then. The waiter was excellent but under the influence of the manager. The end limited and basic. Local opinions are the pizzas are excellent. Other options are Limited! I have never been reduced to swearing in a restaurant but this restaurant did. Not good at all. Refused to pay and left after first taste of starter. Don't go!

Firstly I want to say the food was 10 out of 10 absolutely amazing! However... after we arrived to stay at Argyll hotel last night we went for dinner to the Rio. The atmosphere was terrible. The man serving us was opening mouthing off about the other young waiter who apparently is a new start. The man serving us was constantly walking about saying " I'll just do this myself then," "I'll clean the table then as well, good we've established that then." (All while serving customers or wiping tables down) It was so unpleasant and we felt extremely awkward. When asked if we wanted deserts we nervously said no thank you and just asked for the bill. That's not a way to make your customers feel welcome at all. And although we loved the food we wouldn't go back if that's how each night is. I hadn't been to dunoon for over 10 years and we were there for our baby's gender reveal and that first night really let us down. Staff should have better training or more holidays or something.

I booked a table for 7 four days in advance but had to speak with someone from the Argyll hotel, I was told a table would be booked for me, when we arrived at Rio there was no entry in the book for us and no table, we were told we could have a table in the hotel and still eat from the Rio menu so we done that, the dining room reminded me of a church hall and not very inviting at all, service was slow to non existent as in the hour we were there we managed 2 drinks, the menu was cut down to very little choice which I couldn’t understand as I’ve been in a couple of the other restaurants in town without this issue , considering this was a family dinner with family from Glasgow and Liverpool I was totally disgusted, whoever took my booking needs to be trained how to do it or let someone else who knows what they are doing do it, however, the food we did get was well cooked and nice, I wouldn’t recommend this place to anyone at the moment until they get it sorted

Only two people serving the guy was obviously run off his feet because the girl was clueless. Slow service, food when it arrives is reheated, preprepared and overcooked or undercooked. Italian it is not. Advise you try elsewhere.

Visitited Rio recently on visit back home always been a regular at this place been many times before always make a point to go here when at home. Sadly the service &food standard have declined ordered from list pinot grigio Italian white wine &was served a California one instead + had to ask for ice bucket was told it was Italian by the manager Food not as great either insalata caprese was presented ok but could have maybe had a drizzle of olive oil .Filleto al Rio not like how I remember Sadly my mum had the pollo al crema.Tasted like it had been microwaved Just not very good at all Would have ordered desserts but due to lack of staff they were nowhere to be found as there was a function on in their dining room. Menus very dirty &the one I got all the pages fell out also misleading as says was spearheaded by a chef who no longer works there by at least a year Such a shame as was once the best in the area.Don't think I will be back unless there is a dramatic change.

My daughter and I went to try the tapas menu, there was only us and another two folk in, we waited a wee while for the food but when it came it was good. We did feel there were a lot of staff watching us. Not always a good thing! The atmosphere was a bit strained , so I’m afraid We have not been back. We went mid week so this may not be the best time to go.

We ate here twice during a recent trip and on both occasions the service was excellent - pleasant, efficient and helpful. The food was delicious and good sized portions - everything was piping hot and nicely presented. It also offered good value. The restaurant is modern and clean and the toilets were also very clean.

We were recommended to visit Italiano Rio during a one night stay in Dunoon. What a good recommendation that was. We had one of the best meals ever, served by attentive staff. Not over attentive, just there when you needed them. Perfect.

Really impressed with this Italian/Spanish combo restaurant. Had lovely options all over the menu, the Farfelle prawns were delicious. Wine was nice and reasonably priced. Would definitely head their again.

I did lunch here with my family here yesterday. The food was fantastic, Manager was very understanding and was very accommodating, brilliant customer service and a fantastic attitude. I was on vacation in Scotland and I did lunch in argyll dunoon yesterday.

I came here for a pizza with my family last Friday and i had the 'God Father' as per the waiter's recomendation which was great, with it i was suggested a chilli sauce and it was fantastic. The staff were very helpfull and very friendly.

Booked a table for 7pm for 6 people; waited nearly 30 minutes for one of our parties drinks order. After ordering our food and still not getting our food by 9pm we decided to leave. No explanation from the waiting staff; manager etc in total we seen 4 tables leave for not being served. To not even be given an apology from the staff is extremely disappointing and I can assure them we will never return.

We recently had two meals from the business lunch menu, on a recent trip to Dunoon. The price was really good and the food was amazing !!!! Highly recommended ! The Sea Bass was the best my partner had ever had (and was presented beautifully) and my Mushroom Risotto was delicious.

If you’re hungry I recommend the calzone.... Fillet steak really good value for money ....wine good value no more than £16 .....attentive staff will ensure you have a great meal.

Been to Rio several times and each time thr quality of food is of a good standard. Portion sizes are generous and also do a take away. Pizzas are the best in the area. Staff are friendly and welcoming. Kids are welcome.

What a fabulous place.! We went in because we were on holiday for a week in dunoon. I am not usually an Italian restaurant fan, but this was brilliant. I tried a thing called Rigatonne Salvatore, it was chicken prawns and chilli flakes in white wine. Hot, spicy and delicious. Hubby had the Spaghetti Bolognese. It was delicious. We had dessert too, me going for ice cream and raspberry sauce and hubby had a profiterol thing. Cannot recommend highly enough. Great service, great prices, great food!

We (My Partner and My elderly Parents) stayed at the Argyll hotel and due to cicumstance we chose to dine here on our first evening and were pleasantly surprised.

Slow service and tasteless food. I had the Chicken bruchetta and ithe Chicken with parmesan and spaghetti, both dishes were bland. Others in my group were also disappointed with their meals. We waited quite sometime before we were served our starters and again waiting for our main meals.

I ate here both nights I stayed in Dunoon - that says it all. Worth booking on Saturday night but was quiet on the Friday night.

We all ordered pizza for our dinner and what ever type you ordered, it seemed to come laden with about as much topping as you could cram on top. Mine was a veggie one and it was totally loaded with olives, peppers, red onion and mushrooms. Juicy from the cheese but not greasy.

I have been visiting Dunoon for over 30 years and have always had our Lunch here at the Argyll Hotel, I would like to say that the food was nothing short of disgusting. Brown salad with the starter, the steak pie was full of grease. They even made us pay for the meal in advance as it was the Cowal Gathering. I would not recommend this place at all.

We visit here every time we are in dunoon for the cowal games as this is our favourite place to eat so was a little disappointed to find a limited menu due to the cowal games this was the Wednesday before the games. The food we had was very tasty was a little disappointed to order a pizza that was advertised for it to come smothered in onions and peppers that weren't on the description of the pizza on menu I mentioned this the waitress who came and she checked menu and apologised this wasn't a big problem I just removed them. As I said earlier the food tasted good just not much choice in the limited menu if you don't like icecream or puddings with chocolate in then pudding was a no saved me putting on a few pounds. Was still visit here next time we are over.

Came here 1 Sunday night with my mum for dinner. Very quiet which was fine as it was early on. The waiter kept disappearing for long spells it was pretty obvious he was serving in the attached hotel as well. Service was very slow.food was ok really tasty but both mum and I found the chicken very dry and overcooked. Shame as otherwise i would have given a better review. I had friends here a few weeks ago and they had a lovely meal. Think we were unlucky but no excuse for a tough dry chicken breast even covered in sauce

Title pretty much sums it up. Was ok, one meal was a little disappointing, but not that you couldn’t eat it. Others seemed to enjoy theirs. Not spectacular, but also not bad. Nice interior, staff were pretty friendly. Wouldn’t rush to go back, but also wouldn’t avoid, so pretty much as it states....OK

The food at this restaurant is brilliant. We have only attended for lunches but the menu has always been a great selection and the food is always very tasty. The cost is reasonable and the staff are friendly. Will definitely be back!

Arrived without a booking and got a table without a problem. order taken quickly, but had to wait some time for our main courses. When we asked if our was nearly ready we were informed that there was only one chef! When the food arrived it was very good but exceptionally hot as the roof of my mouth promptly found out!!

The place is OK for one time visit.Food was average and so was the service.On a plus side I did enjoy my cocktail there and interior is quite nice too.

We enjoyed dinner at this hotel very much. The location right on the main street in Dunoon is convenient, as was its location in our hotel. The service was good as was the food. It was very quiet during our weeknight visit--only two other groups in the restaurant.

My wife & I were taken out for a meal at your restaurant last night on my recommendation, I and my friend ordered risotto with prawns and had to return them as both of them were served and tasted burnt we sent them back and had to wait for our replacement which tasted ok but it was more like thick soup. The waiter apologised and said that the chef would also like to apologise for the mishap. I am local and have used this place numerous times but after last night's food you will definitely not be getting our custom again.

the twice we have visited Dunoon we have eaten here. Pleasant surroundings and food is delicious. I would defo recommend this place. Prices quite reasonable also.

My wife and I went into Rio on the first night of our holiday near Dunoon. First impressions were really good. The restuarant was fairly quiet when we arrived and we were shown quickly to our table. The staff were pleasant from the outset and their smiles suggested that they enjoy the work they do. Service was pretty quick and the waiter recommended the Rio take on a Rossini for myself. My wife ordered the Arabiatta. It's a long time since I've had such an enjoyable steak. Cooked medium rare, exactly as ordered, the fillet was succulent anyway but the small jug of pate sauce that accompanied it was to die for. Just the right amount of sauted potatoes and veg with it. This was an awesome dish. My wife also enjoyed the pasta although it was maybe a bit spicier than she would have liked. It was noticeable that the waiting staff were attentive and continued smiling even when the restuarant got busier. Clearly this was driven by the Head Waiter/Mature de who lead by example. A thoroughly enjoyable experience.

Lovely clean restaurant, with simple stylish decor. Friendly and helpful staff. Food was served quickly and was absolutely delicious! We had foccaccia with oil and the best balsamic ever, followed by a beef lasagna, a veg lasagna and a side salad: all excellent.

We were here for a meal on our second night in Dunoon. It proved to be a smashing choice. The food was delicious. and the staff were great, very friendly and helpful. Price is fairly reasonable as it goes. What you will also find is a lovely, calm and pleasant atmosphere. All in all a fine place for a holiday meal.

We had a pizza and a calozoni with chips. Both well presented and hot! Filling and of course tasty! The meals took quite a while to come but the waiter apologised for this. We both agreed we would recommend this restaurant due to the food and cleanliness.

I was hoping to get a traditional Italian meal here and as such ordered the spaghetti meatballs and spaghetti Bolognese. Neither hit the mark. The garlic bread was okay.

Lovely Italian eatery at the end of Argyll St in Dunoon. Spacious dining area and an extensive menu. 3rd visit here and always been very pleased with food and attentive staff.

Visited here with work friends for dinner. Lovely meal and very good timely service. Fillet steak is highly recommended for anyone visiting, and the pineapple sorbet for dessert! Definitely one to visit if you’re in Dunoon!

The food as a whole was very nice. We had peppered sirloin steak for our mail course which was tough and tasteless.The cheesecake was delicious I know other dining ther the same night had a similar complaint.

had to ask to move tables as we were a bit jammed in and the waitress wasn't too quick at moving us despite the place being empty as other tables were for four and "they might get people in" Apart from that the food was very good indeed and definitely freshly made. Great value. Good modern decor but little atmosphere but I would pop back no problem. Good for dropping in at the last minute. Mostly tourists and hotel guests as locals tend to go elsewhere. Sea food is delicious and steaks well cooked.

I can't even comment on the food, as we didn't get to eat. We tried to get a table 3 times, and were turned away each time. The first attempt, we were more than understanding, it was busy, and we had no booking. So for our second attempt, I went to the property early in the morning to make a booking. Was told they were no longer taking them, but they'd be happy to accommodate us when we went to eat. Went later that evening, more than half the tables were empty, but they wouldn't seat us as we didn't have a booking. Explained we were told we didn't need one, and the waitress still refused to seat us. My travelling companion also called to book (attempt #3), and they wouldn't take us. Extremely disappointed. Not sure I will have the need/opportunity to return to Dunoon, but if I were, I'd avoid Rio just based on their customer service.

Food was OK but over priced. Cost me just under a £10 for pan fried chicken and spaghetti. Staff friendly but the table and chairs looked like they belong in a school canteen. I was still hungry after my meal but didn't want to spend another £8 on desert. Spent just under £50 total for me and my wife but wish I got a Chippy instead and save £35.

I have been to dunoon 3 years in a row for cowal games and this is one of mine and my daughter's favourite restraunts food and service always good and great value for money see you all next year.
