We now live in New Zealand but travel frequently back to the Wirral. We have been coming to this restaurant for 34 years! It is a pilgrimage for us, and we are never disappointed. We love this food and the friendly service. As vegetarians, we are well catered for, and the wine is perfectly matched to the homely Italian food. We absolutely love this place, highly recommended.

Nice restaurant with friendly staff and cosy atmosphere. Food was very uninteresting and it lacked the quality of a genuine trattoria. Very much an Italian restaurant for English tastes.

We were lucky to find this great little Italian close to where we were staying in Port Sunlight village. Nice welcome and table found without reservation. Menu included nice specials as well as pizzas and pastas. Good quality food and the house wine, both red and white were very nice and excellent value. Lovely choc fondant for dessert. A great evening.

Booked a table via WhatsApp as instructed by the restaurants website. Arrived at the arranged time and “greeted” by a rude woman (possibly owner or manager?) who said she had no record of our booking and I had not spoken to her. Kept interrupting me when I wanted to explain about the WhatsApp message. We required a high chair which I had made them aware of on the booking. No high chair available, rude lady then proposed we propped our 1 year old child on a cushion- clearly doesn’t have any concern about customer safety and only concern is making a profit. Told her we would go elsewhere. Such a shame because we have previously visited this restaurant and enjoyed our meal and time there, however due to how rude this woman was, we will not be back, would not want to give her our custom again. Also, waitress (who was very sweet and tried to help us) appeared to be looking scared of her, possibly walking on egg shells around this rude and disrespectful woman. A message to this rude woman: learn to respect your customers and staff as your business is nothing without them.

Food not as good as expected, for example starter was poor ....ordered garlic prawns and what arrived was very small prawn/shrimps that had not been seared or marinated, they were served in a bowl of melted butter with 2 slices or thick dry white toast!!!.... Soup was edible but lacked flavour..... Not a good experiences based on food served. Would not revisit

Had a lovely meal here, food is always good. Had the chocolate sponge pudding at just under £7. But was asked if we wanted an extra scoop of ice-cream as although the pudding comes with 1 scoop, this wouldn't be enough. So we said yes! We were charged for 2 scoops £5.50 taking the pudding to over £9 each and it definitely wasn't worth that. Very expensive. So watch out next time you are offered extra, ask if there is a charge. 1 scoop was definitely not enough, so why not automatically serve with 2.!

Visited here today for partner’s birthday. The food was excellent, well the starter and the main course were, we were not given the pudding menu until the ovens had been switched off, thus reducing our choice of puddings by half - typically, the puddings that we wanted were the hot ones, so we had to do without! The people on the table next to us were offered the menu in time, we waited and waited, when they came to,us, it was too, late. Also we had one drink, when we were given our main courses, the waitress took our wine glasses away, we were not asked if we would like some wine, or indeed any other drink. Never been out for a meal and only had one drink before.... very sober night!!!

Hadn't been for a while but remembered how good the food was last time and again I wasn't disappointed. The lasagne is to die for and is listed as a favourite on the menu. My friend had a chicken dish and it was excellent with the veg cooked perfectly. Good atmosphere and attentive staff. My only gripe and it is minor is that the tables are too close together and at times you felt you were on the same table. Just too close for my liking but it would not put me off returning.

It is a place to book before hand as small and very busy. This is the 2nd Visit and can not fault it. The manageress has always looked after my allergies of Black Pepper, Herbs and Spices and gone out her way to make sure I am catered for. Was Grandma's first time in a Italian and enjoyed every mouthful. 2 of our Party vegetarians and well catered for too. ........ Out of their control later in the Evening the Windows rattled and Door blow open Waitress run out and came back in and said Nothing out there. Within seconds she then informed us that there had been an Explosion down the road. The waitress then spent a while trying to get us Taxi's to get us home but the whole Area was in Shut Down. Well I'm glad that I'd had my Vanilla Icecream & Lemoncello at the end of the meal. Is value for money and a great atmosphere and will return when next in the Area.

Well well well, where do I begin - what a joyous evening was spent in the quirky and cute confines of Ristorante Italia! Back in my student days studying the Classics and Latin in the city of Bologna, I became well aquianted with the gastronomical delights of Piazza Maggiore's many great restaurants and I can honestly say, hand on heart *places hand on chest*, that Ristorante Italia is the closest in the UK that I've came to an authentic gustatory Italiano experience. Although we were yearning for gnochi, followed up by a hearty budino pudding, by the time we'd sank about 8 Birra Moretti's between us (outstanding bit of Udine tipple! Beats Peroni in every department) we could hardly make out anything on the menu, so just ordered a basic cheese and olive pizza. In all fairness, I was so consumed by the Renaissance era decor, bringing flashbacks of me composing sonnets sitting on a bench facing Duomo di Milano back in the summer of 78 (what a corker), I'd forgotten I was there for food. Needless to say, the pizza was divine, the Americana which we split between us had a real brackish aftertaste. Due to the tipple that was sank, all of us paid our dues to the Water Closet and couldn't help but notice the fantastic Astrid chrome door handles. Which coupled with the pine Windsor dining chairs really set the room off! After the bill was paid and a well earned tip was given, up we got, Avanti Ragazzi, departing the gaff humming Dean Martin's 'Mambo Italiano'. Grazie Tante, 10/10!

A small independent restaurant in Lower Bebington. Essential to book-we went Wednesday Evening and it was pretty full. A very varied menu - pizzas, pasta dishes etc, Some very interesting Ice Cream Flavours. Lovely good value tasty food served hot. The two girls waiting on were both very pleasant and knowledgeable about the menu. The only thing that was surprising was that the dessert menu wasn't offered to us - we had to ask for it! I would go back in the future.

The Manageress is very rude and dealing with customers is a huge inconvenience to her, as mentioned by other reviewers. However, if you manage to go on her days off it is a huge bonus! Food is always first class and beautifully presented. It is worth risking the wrath of the Iron Lady to enjoy eating there. All other staff are very helpful and friendly.

I took my elderly mother here - it's local to her and has been here for 28 years, yet neither of us had ever noticed it before (duh...). We came on a cold, wet January lunchtime and the place was nearly empty, which was less fun than had it been full, and my mother didn't endear herself to the manageress by complaining immediately that it wasn't very warm inside. However, we surmounted this poor start and duly appreciated, between us, a lasagne and a pizza; the lasagne was pronounced "good" and my Amalfi pizza was extremely so - perfect base and a generosity of quality ingredients. The small wine list was interesting (and very Italian) and the house red was just the job. They've been going a long time, despite the struggle they must have because they're away from the main village thoroughfare - and their success is down to the food.

At 20:35 after 50 minutes of not one member offering us a dessert menu, another drink or a coffee, I went the bar and asked for my bill. When I pointed out the 50 minute wait to the Iron Lady, ( you all know who I mean) she said the restaurant was busy. When I then pointed out that the restaurant was half empty and my table was moved 3 times to make room for a couple who never sat anywhere near to us, she just turned her back on me. I've been coming to this restaurant for years and remember when you queued for a table. I'm not shocked the place is half empty these days. Cannot recommend this restaurant for ANYTHING. It's in need of a deep clean, new decor and a visit to Italy if they think it's Italian food they are serving. A few frozen prawns swimming in butter with a flash of garlic salt plus 'value' sliced white bread toast. Not exactly difficult to cook and yet so bad. The prawns were little bullets of shrivelled shrimp and the 'garlic butter' far too hot - as in 'just come out of the microwave' hot. No culinary skills in this place that a Year 7 couldn't master for Food Tech class.

My husband and I decided to go back to this restaurant as we have previously had good food, service and nice dining experience here. We hadn't booked and was told by a woman who we thought was the owner / head we should have booked but could accommodate us if we made our table free by 8.30pm. We agreed and settled down to choose from the menu. We were eating our starters when beneath the food was a hair. Not wanting this to reach other diners, I discreetly called the owner over to our table and whispered what I had found. She raised her voice and loudly said 'that's impossible!, all my staff were hats! she took my dish away with no apology or an offer of something else to eat but announced we wouldn't be charged for the dish. Disgusted at how this was managed we were going to walk out, we were hungry and decided to stay. At the end of the meal there was no offer of apology, smile or acknowledgement of our custom. Very disappointed we left at 8.25pm with 3 available tables?? Will never ever return!

We are regular visitors here and that is for one reason - the FOOD. Isn't that why we go to restaurants??The owner is also the head chef and whilst he doesn't cook as much as he used to, he has passed on his hints and tips to the chefs he employs and they SOOOOO get it right. Anything on the menu is a real gastro-treat in our opinion. The pasta dishes are exceptional as are the pizzas and the chicken dishes. All at reasonable prices. The let down's - one small and one quite large. The small disappointment is the internal decor. The place could really do with a make-over. The large disappointment is the behaviour and attitude of the wife of the owner/chef. Most clients are an inconvenience to her - who's doing who a favour here????? She is also downright rude to the poor young girls who have the mis-fortune to be employed here. We don't often see the same waiting staff - I wonder why???To improve this place, they should do the following:1) keep the food and the chefs exactly as they are2) shut for a week and spend a bit of money on doing the place up3) ban the owner's wife from being anywhere near customers or the waiting staffWe will still keep going here for the food - let's hope the battleaxe takes the hint.

I've driven past this small restaurant for the last ten years and decided to give it a go with my partner. We used to live in Italy some years ago and know our Italian food very well. The reviews suggested "Best Italian on the Wirral". I can only imagine these reviews were written by people who still think Pasta grows on trees. What strikes you about the restaurant is the décor. It's OLD. Proper 1980's old. I half expected to see Jellied Eels on the menu and Blue Nun on the wine list. Someone get Gordon Ramsey in here fast. With just a little investment this place could be wonderful as it's a cosey and well located restaurant. Salt cellars from back street cafes, no music, peeling woodchip wallpaper and half broken fairy lights are what stood out to me.The food wasn't all bad but the starters were very expensive and really poor though. Garlic French Bread is about as Italian as Marmite. And soggy, drowed prawns with a slice of white toast.. WHAT !!!! No bread baskets available either. Very weird The main courses were satisfactory but nothing special. All in all, it's not bad but for the money we paid we expected A LOT more. We paid £70 for two poor starters, two fillinh pasta main courses , 2 pieces of 'average' cheesecake and a massively overpriced bottle of wine. (£24 for a £7 bottle) On a plus note the staff were very helpful and attentive...You can eat in many places in Liverpool for that budget and get excellent food in great atmosphere. This place needs to either drop it's prices or update it's menu and décor for me to return or recommend it.

This was our second visit to this venue. As previously, the food was excellent. Well cooked, tasty and hot. I like my food hot and in many places it is often only lukewarm.Having read some of the other reviews regarding the ambience, I cannot agree. Not everyone wants a modern/clinical atmosphere. The decor and feel to this restaurant is old worldly and peaceful. That is not to say that modern environments are not enjoyable, just that all restaurants need not be the same.I did not notice negatives if there were any. I did notice that on a Monday night the restaurant was full and that the staff were courteous and helpful. If there was negative, it was only that with there being so many in the restaurant they probably needed another member of staff in the kitchen so the meal was a little slow in coming.... but.... well worth the wait when it did!!

The food here is generally very good. The restaurant however needed updating about 20 years ago. In the winter the restaurant is freezing, customers frequently wears coats. Salt pots look like they belong in a caravan. The wine glasses are small, cheap and nasty. The owner rules with an iron fist. Some of the 'specials' are small portions. But, the food as I said is very good. If they invested a bit of money on decor and heating, it could be 5 star.

Just had a meal at this so called Italian restaurant!!Where do I start. Firstly the smell of mold in the restaurant really didn't bold well for what was to follow. Let me say this place is stuck in a 1980's time warp when dining out was starting to become sexy....you need to move on and update the menu and drop your prices its far too expensiveI had prawn cocktail for starters which I thought was a dish that you couldn't really cock up, but believe me they managed. Too much marie rose sauce tasteless prawns some chopped tomatoes that looked as if they had been chopped days ago. No brown bread points served with the dish -frankly a really unpleasant starter that I didnt eat much of and have never had worse before. To follow I had the dish of the day Italian meatballs served with a tomato sauce. Again I can hear you say 'you couldn't mess this up'. I asked for my meatballs to be served with taglatelli and not the advertised spagetti. Guess what it came with, yes your right spagetti! which I complained about and they changed. Of course by this time my husband had eaten half of his mealWhen my husband complained about the poor quality meat and numerous particles of bone that I had fished out of the dish having only eaten two meat balls their retort was that this is how they come in from the butchers. So there not home made or italian!! bought in!! or fresh!!. Worse still they didnt offer to take them off the bill.I was driving so was drinking lime and soda, I complained that the first drink was flat and I had asked for a pint and was brought a half. I was informed that they only gave 1/2 pints and the drink was swapped for yet another soda with hardly any lime in and still flat soda. The service was slow and poor, the front of house staff really need to be alert and show some interests in their guests. Will I ever go again NEVER!!! This was supposed to be a romatnic night out which was spoiled by the poor food and serviceThey seriously need the help of Gordon Ramsey to sort out the extremley poor decor the sticky tables, the herendous smell in the place and the food . Good luck you'll need it

The chef here is a character and he takes care of what he does. What makes this place poor is that the menu is unimaginative and overpriced for what is served. And then there is the lady owner who thinks it's acceptable to shout her mouth off at her staff in front of customers. We will never go back!

This little gem was just what we were looking for family run restaurant not a chain they were very busy we were lucky to get a table. The staff friendly and helpful, the lady who I took to be the owner was attentive and chatted with the clients most of whom she was on first name terms. There was a family with a son with special dietary needs they brought some food with them and she took it and cooked it for them and took great care to ask what they could cook for the young man.The pizza was authentic and I had trifle. The food was great great atmosphere I would recommend a visit and if we return to the area will go back booking recommend as its a busy popular place to eat.It

We often visit this restaurant as a couple and always love the food. Tonight for the first time we took along our little boy who has eating allergies and Jenny the owner was so helpful and made up garlic bread using his own bread and a special main meal...it was a lovely meal and they must be doing a lot right here as the restaurant was full at 6pm... We all really enjoyed our meal

We have had many good meals over the past 20 odd years and not had any reason to complain. However last night we waited almost an hour to be served. Two of our party had steaks which were very small in size considering the price!! The wine is very overpriced considering the quality. whilst Giovanni was at the restaurant we don't think he was cooking as the food was not as good as usual. Is Giovanni planning on retiring?? We hope not.....

We've been coming here at least 3 or 4 times a year for the last 20 years. The food has always been delicious; some of us have a something from the specials board, others plumb for a favourite (for me its the lasagna...every time!!). Very popular locally, we go earlier to avoid queuing for a table. Some reviewers have commented on the owner, who we have occasionally found to be a little 'off' but generally perfectly welcoming and hospitable, other staff always found to be lovely.

My husband and I went here for dinner last night. We both enjoyed our food but we were disappointed with the service. We weren't asked if we wanted more drinks with our main course and nobody wanted to know if we wanted dessert. Having felt that we had been ignored we left after our main course. We were sat next to the window which was very dirty and only half the light bulbs in the window actually worked. The surroundings are looking very tired and need a bit of TLC. Won't be returning in a hurry.

Went her on sat night with two other couples. There are only two sittings at this restaurant 6 and 8. Food was okay but considering the price I expected much better quality food. The portions were small too. One of our guests order was done wrong and we had all finished by the time his came and no offer of anything to make up for inconvenience of him eating later than anyone else. In fact we had to ask for fresh veg for him too. One guest ordered steak and it was very small. Garlic bread was lovely. Surroundings are a little tired and cramped. We all felt food was overpriced for the quality. Won't be returning in a hurry, sorry. I note owners do not respond to feedback from customers which is a shame if they want to improve their business.

You can always guarantee that whatever you order will be perfectly cooked, have been dining here for 25 years plus and standards never drop, very small and cosy but decor not everyone's taste, but then I go for the good food. My son who lives in Italy always visits the restaurant and reckons best food outside Italy.

Love this place. Came for my birthday on Tuesday 5th of January. Lovely atmosphere as always. Had my favourite dish, prawns and pasta in a creamy garlic sauce (think its called Rialto)....delicious. Side order of bruschetta, enough for two people. Excellent service. Menu stays the same, but it doesn't need to change, would never tire of the superb dishes served. Hubby had the special of meatballs, he devoured them. Highly recommended, quirky venue, take me back.

We were a party of 12 going for some food to celebrate a significant birthday. Wow !!! Such lovely food in such a relaxed setting. We enjoyed a quiet enclave at the back of the restaurant and were even allowed to bring in our own birthday cake. I have raved and ranted to friends to bleed about how much we enjoyed this place .. A really enjoyable night, superb food and good memories to keep :) will be putting this quaint place on my favourites list.

Went Christmas eve. Had a great meal. Mrs D Ragon managed to be extremely rude and offensive to both tables either side of us. On one side, she queried (offensively) whether they had paid their deposit and demanded to know why they didn't have their receipt with them. When told that Mrs D Ragon wrote it herself in the book, she dismissed them explaining that she didn't have the book with her tonight! The table to other side of us wanted to exchange their potato side dish for chips. Based on Mrs D Ragon's response you would have thought they wanted her to run naked through the streets of Rome. She told them (in no uncertain terms) that they could not exchange the side dish but could order an additional side if they wished to. The upshot is, great food and, if it is to your taste, you get free cabaret courtesy of Mrs D Ragon.

Massive choice, started with the best cheesey garlic bread ever followed by our favourites fusilli buon gustaio full of tasty prawns, macaroni alla romana and tortellini all up to Giovani's consistent high standard.Only 2 of our party managed deserts of ice cream, can highly recommend the mango and passion fruit.Finished with coffees maciatto and capucinos which were excellent. Our bill was about £70 for a substantial meal for 4 including drinks and given the high standard of every thing we thought was a fair price to pay.We have been dining there possibly 20 years on and off and will certainly return.

Been here many times but have noticed a decline in standards the last few visits. We regretted going this week as we took friends and frankly, it was embarrassing. Noticed straight away that the wine glasses were filthy, smeared with grease. When I asked for clean ones the waitress smiled sweetly and informed me it wasn't 'proper' dirt. Maybe it was the Italian version? There really is nothing more off-putting than being handed a food-smeared menu. What would possess a restaurant to serve that up as a starter? I suppose it does give one an idea of the dishes on offer ..... Oddly, the same waitress seemed intent on selling us the house wine by the litre, despite us wanting to order from the list?? Ended up with a ropey Chardonnay at £22.So sadly, this place has slid right out of Italy, down towards Sicily and out into the Mediterranean Sea. What a shame, but it has to be said.

I've eaten here at various times over the years, I only use it for it's convenient location.Due to the rudeness of the owner I vowed never to return but last week we were meeting friends for tea and everywhere was booked up. My friend booked here last minute not knowing my views. I hoped the owner wouldn't be there but sadly she was. I wondered if age had mellowed her, it hadn't. She was incredibly rude to me, told me my bag was a health and safety hazard as I had placed it beside me due to space restrictions. For someone to have tripped over my bag would have first meant falling across my lap. There was no need for her to say anything. She would do this business a genuine service if she stayed at home and let her husband and staff take care of business. I myself work in the hospitality industry so I know how a paying customer should be treated. You can't just fawn over old people who look like they've got a bob or two. The food is average and overpriced. If I find myself looking for somewhere to eat at the last minute in Bebington and this is my only option, I will plump for a bag of chips on a bench. This woman does not deserve my hard earned wages and won't be getting her hands on them again.

I have been there many times, it is very expensive and almost all dishes are over £10 each. There is only one thing i like on the menu which is the Vegetable pizza. I have had that for many years, and now that I'm vegetarian I don't know what i'll have from there. It is very small and cramped, not very easy to move someone round in a wheelchair. Tables are very close together and gets very full, if you want a place id recommend going early or booking a table.

Booked a table for my birthday and went with my partner. The place was more than half full with 2 waitresses on.Me and my partner ordered diet coke (which was flat and tasted awful). And ordered a starter between us and then mains. 30 minutes later, no starter had arrived. The thing that really irritated the life out of me, were the waitresses, all huddled by the bar (unfortunately, we were sat right by the bar, it wouldn't of been so bad if we weren't so close) and gossiping about Liverpool nightclubs, lip fillers etc. I understand we all want a chat and that's fine, but what really bugged me was 'I hope he pays the bill and leaves and doesn't just sit here all night haha'. Have you ever heard anything like it in a restaurant? A third girl was hanging out the kitchen window/hatch just leaning there chatting away, no hair net/hat or anything. Me and my partner were just so extremely irritated by this. We didn't have a chance to sample the food, we just left money for the drinks and left. Complete lack of service, complete lack of professionalism and a place I WILL NOT be returning to.

Just been to the Ristorante Italia and had one the best meals we have had in a long time...we moved to the village about 3 years ago and have never been before but went this evening and had a lovely meal. We were fitted in at very short notice with no problem at all. The sea bass and pollo gorgonzola were excellent followed by the grand marnier crepes and trifle - all excellent!! will definitely be returning soon I hope! Service was great, everyone was very welcoming and friendly.

Returned from a lovely meal ready to write a review but then glimpsed previous one's and thought that mine will be almost identical. Garlic bread, garlic mushrooms, lasagne and pasta where all beautiful, really tasty and just the right size portions. The girls waiting on we're smiley and very pleasant, then here comes the great BIG but. Yes the place needed a fresh lick of paint, perhaps a mural instead of crooked pictures and most definately a good clean. We were sat by the window and immediately noticed crumbs and dead flies all along the sill. Surely in such an establishment the cleaning should be paramount? If it wasn't for the standard of food nobody would set foot in here. Such a shame. Why has the owner not replied to any of the negative comments or cleaned up a bit?

Rang to book a table for 8:30, was told table available for 9 but to ring back at 8pm to check if table available earlier. Rung at 8 and was told she wasn't sure if we could have the table at 9 as people were still eating and there were other people waiting for tables. However we were welcome to go down and sit and wait. 1) the restaurant is not big enough for people to sit and wait - there is no seating area or bar area 2) we had booked a table for 9 but now we're told it wasn't definite. Bizarre system. Absolute shame as The food is gorgeous here (pricey but delicious) so much so that one can overlook the decor etc. the manageress/lady owner strikes again.

Popped in on Saturday night, didn't book and popped in on the off chance and got the final table.Place was very busy but it was a nice atmosphere.Myself and the wife shared a cheesy garlic bread for starters, it was tasty and freshly made.Mains were tasty, my wife had the ham, chicken creamy pasta dish (sorry can't remember exact dish) and she enjoyed it. I had the Pork Cannelloni off the special board and it was yummy, loads of cheesy gooey lovleyness on top.Washed down with a few Moretti beers, one gripe would be no cider. My wife likes a cider and it's now as popular as ever, a surprise when they didn't serve it.Al in all a good visit, reasonably priced and tasty food. Will go back.

The food cannot be faulted at this restaurant absolutely gorgeous - however the lady owner was so rude and could also be heard to be having a go at her very friendly members of staff. We had to wait 25 minutes for our pudding, which wasn't an issue until we heard the lady owner abruptly asking a member of staff 'why we hadn't paid our bill' to which the girl responded 'because they are waiting for their desserts' this made us feel rather uncomfortable.

Bizarre customer service... We enjoyed excellent meals at Portofino New Brighton, over several months, but on this occasion we have have been put off from going there again. On the plus side, the food quality is normally excellent , and on most visits staff were attentive and helpful, but one of the young Italian waiters is unfortunately not good at English, and this impacts on service; he often has to refer questions to his manager, because he doesn't understand them. He doesn't even understand some basic restaurant terms, such as 'gluten' On this latest occasion though, it was the manager who took our food orders; his English is good, but the Sea Bass my partner ordered, came with a completely unrecognisable sauce, not one described on the menu. She also suspected that the sea bass was mackerel (or another different fish). When my partner questioned him, he was adamant that it was sea bass, but bizarrely said that "we sometimes change the sauces". Er, no....I thought, restaurants do not "change sauces" without discussion with the customer. The manager also offered to go to the kitchen to discuss the matter with the chef and he would " come back shortly" But he didn't return. At all, ever..... He hadn't left the restaurant because we saw him chatting to other customers at the bar, on our way out. At the same sitting, I was given Ravioli in a rather sickly cream sauce, instead of the Canneloni dish which I had ordered. I didn't complain because we had already questioned my partners dish, so I just eat the meal, which I didn't enjoy. So this restaurant has lost 2 regular customers due to what appeared to be odd, bizarre behaviour by the manager. I notice that Portofino, New Brighton, don't respond to any of these reviews; They obviously don't care, not interested. They should be . If you go there, be careful that the staff have properly understood your order, and reject it if it isn't exactly what you ordered , is my advice.
