Food was exceptional, albeit the service a bit variable. Staff were really friendly but I felt they lost focus or were just not communicating with each other - very apologetic.

Wow! We stayed here as they offer free camping if you purchase meals in the pub. Utterly worth it. The bar staff were fab - friendly and efficient and definitely part of the charm. The food....the photos don't do the meals justice! I ordered the scotch egg for starters...literally perfect! The yolk! My hubbie had the chicken wings and he said they were great! I had the steak...not cheap but so worth it! It honestly has to be the best steak I've had so far and I am steak fussy! Hubbie had the lamb and he was utterly impressed. There are two shower rooms with a toilet / sink area (first one's lock is broken). Second has two showers in, so for any parents, this is ideal. I have to say, the folks in the bar of an evening were also super-friendly. So far, one of our favourite camping stop-overs! Food, staff, area....amazing! Thank you.

Lovely quaint pub with live music. Came for a belated birthday meal and the food was delicious. Not your normal gastro pub menu and much more on the gourmet side. Had the crispy and mouth watering scotch egg as my starter and a flat fish sole as my main. Waiting staff were all over it and pub staff v.friendly.

The starters were immaculate and my whole family loved them. The mains were a good price and amazing. I recommend for dessert the sticky toffee pudding. Overall this experience was fantastic and made the walk we did before an amazing success. The service was also great with kind, friendly, fast waiters. Five stars.

What a great pub. And the food and great service are proof that if you have a good product, people will come. It seems to be in the middle of nowhere,but it was busy all day. Food was amazing; not cheap; but worth every penny. The adjoining campsite is a lovely spot. Highly recommend.

Came for Sunday lunch .. Had 3 course set menu £35 each ..wow it was amazing and good value..best Sunday lunch we've had ...breads and olives, then we had squid, scotch egg which was nice and runny inside ,the roast pork was plentiful and ample roast potatoes, carrots,parsnip,cabbage ,amazing yorkie pud..dessert was rhubarb panacotta..amazing ..wow..service was excellent..we will definitely be back...thank you all..4 happy customers

Staying in North Devon at the time in a reunion with old work colleagues. We had travelled down for the day, to Cornwall ,and were looking for a pub for lunch. Well this place was unbelievable. Excellent staff. Never felt so welcome in all my life. Although there was only three of us. The food is way above what you would expect from a pub. And the prices were cheap for the quality. Hope it stays in business for many years.

I don't really do reviews (or at least very rarely) but after a fabulous lunch today for 2 of us I wanted to say how much we enjoyed our beautifully cooked lunch in a lovely quality pub. Service was great and we will be back again as soon as we can.....thanks to all the staff and the chefs creations are amazzzzzing!!

One of the great joys in life is discovering a great pub and this was definitely one of those. Beautifully appointed with a roaring fire, there was a lovely warm welcome, a good range of beers and an extensive menu. We had snacks (scotch egg, corn ribs, great cheesy chips and some of the best wings I have ever had) which I thought were reasonably priced. A lovely experience. Well done!

On the 21/02/2025 at 12-30 my wife and i arrived at the rising sun having travelled from south Devon 45 miles to attend a birthday lunch party for a friend who lives in the area of this establishment a group of 9 all over 70 years. The 2 course set menu at £19 was excellent value and excellent quality, that's the good news. The a la carte menu is very overpriced for what you get, quality 0k, a cup of tea i think they had to fetch from India (ref cost ) and time to serve is extortionate. The serving staff were excellent but the time to receive food was far to long. We now come to my main negative comment the bar person (male) that we encountered when arriving needs to attend customer service training if this establishment is to survive, having booked a table we started to proceed to the dining room when in a loud UNPLEASANT/ DICTATORIAL voice he informed us ( YOUR NOT IN THERE YOUR DOWN THE OTHER END ) i now move to are bill payment and exiting the establishment the above mentioned person was not competent at the operation of the the till and was somewhat reluctant to provide receipts , he was more concerned about the unpaid charge for a cup of tea and when dealing with 2 elderly ladies with regard to this matter he did not show any understanding or empathy whatsoever he had to have the last word which he made as we left loud enough for all to hear (THERE WAS A 3RD CUP), my wife and my maturity aloud me to leave without confrontation how ever you have 9 dissatisfied customers throwing pebbles into the pond the ripples can reach far and wide. For context i spent my whole life in customer service/management and do not give this revue lightly or maliciously i only wish to try and elevate customer service in this country

The best food I have had in a long time properly cooked by a proper chef been fairly local will be regular visitors now and can’t wait to go again

Having been to the Rising Sun on a number of occasions we felt we had to congratulate everyone on the whole experience. The staff were excellent and the food was superbly presented and so tasty. The atmosphere of the pub is worth the visit alone. We fully recommend a visit, you will not be disappointed.

Exceptional food! Went for a birthday dinner and was so impressed. Can't fault anything from the still crackling sound of the crackling arriving at the table, the layers of flavour in the food, and the perfect balance of not too sweet dessert. We will absolutely be coming back.

We had the most amazing dinner ever! We were greeted by a very helpful gentleman at the bar who took our drinks order and directed us in the restaurant area, we were seated at a lovely table and our servers were very attentive, asking for drinks refills regularly. We ordered bread and scotched egg to start. lamb rump and the steak as a main and sticky toffee pudding for dessert. Everything was 10/10 could not complain. Lovely place to eat and reasonably priced, highly recommend. We were visiting the area and come across the restaurant online, was worth the short drive. If we are ever in the area again we will definitely be back. Thanks so much for the best food.

What an amazing meal We had 3 starters all of which were delicious followed by the Burger and Steak and Ale pie . Literally nothing could have improved this experience. Georgie served is and was fantastic

Fabulous food, a roaring fire and great craic with the locals. The perfect place to spend the evening. And we stayed in the field opposite in our van, ideal.

Weekday evening here, a very welcoming bar area with open fire, staff very polite and efficient. Good choice of food with a set menu plus ‘a la cart’ as well. The food was really lovely, and reasonably priced, along with good choice of drinks from the bar.

Food is a very high quality and the atmosphere and friendly bar staff are 5 stars, don't pass this place stop and enjoy!

Lovely evening in the Bar last night. Best meal I’ve had this year and the chef really nailed veggie flavours. The goats cheese ravioli was super yummy and the panacotta pretty awesome too. Camped overnight which was also super convenient with electric hook up and hot showers. Just need better weather next time. We will be back

Another old Cornish gem of a.pub. You think you've seen the best them another pops up. Service was superb Great selection of drinks But the food was the star Pie of the day with smokey mash what a meal best pie i have had for a long time Artichoke and truffle pasta another winner Sticky toffee pudding was superb Great atmosphere we will be back

We had been 3 ti.mes before the experience we had last week. We had always been in the resteraunt but this time 5 of us was put on a tiny table in the corner of the bar..lt wasn't comfortable leaving at all.The staff were friendly but we asked for water 3 times and never got it We had been raving about the pub to our family but this time we were disappointed. We were going to book 20th Oct for an occasion but have de cided to go somewhere else just in case. We will come again but on our own. Such a shame as we loved it before.

Very disappointed. My husband and I visited last night to celebrate his birthday. When making the booking I advised them that he has a serious sesame allergy, which was acknowledged and advice given by our server before we ordered. My husband’s steak was cooked to perfection and his meal was delicious overall. I had ordered the catch of the day which was Monk fish. I was served the tail end, which is basically 60% bone and 40% flesh. I checked my facts before posting this review and found that the demonstrations online show chefs cutting away the meat from the only bone and using the bone and tail to make fish stock. I was very disappointed and hungry. We ordered a cheese and biscuits to share, and on arrival I recognised that the biscuits, although an expensive brand, contain sesame seeds. I asked them to take the plate back and check the packaging. 10 minutes later the plate was returned with 2 slices of bread replacing the biscuits and a comment of ‘sorry about that’ as it was dumped on the table. We were happy to get home without any serious allergy repercussions.

Doesn't look much from the outside, but this places serves up a treat. Lovely food, great beer, great service. Well worth a visit.

We were recommended this place to eat . Personally if I was driving by I would not stop as the place does not look inviting compared to other country pubs . However the decor inside is traditional, the welcome was warm , and it was full of returning locals creating a natural atmosphere. ( dog friendly in the bar ) The food was delicious, locally sourced fresh and well presented and service was delivered with a smile , reasonably attentive and good. I would go back again . We recommend this place .

Sunday lunch for 8 of us as a birthday celebration was just excellent. From the welcome and service of Nick and his colleagues to the quality of the starters, mains and puds, all was outstanding. We have been many times before and it has always been a joy. Look out for the scotch egg and the fish courses, YUM!

Fantastic pub with an uninspiring frontage! Lots of options for seating and dog friendly. Food is very impressive with everything from pub classics to some really delicious dishes that are beautifully presented and inventive. Definitely worth a visit (or two…)

We had the Sunday roast but the veg tasted dry like it had finished cooking hours ago and was just kept warm.

Due to excellent experiences at this restaurant previously, yesterday evening we took our family to celebrate our daughter’s 18th birthday. The food was absolutely delicious. Across three courses it was pure heaven! Our party was made up of those who regularly eat at higher end restaurants as well as farmers who love a good feed, and everyone was happy! The staff who looked after us were fantastic as always, attentive, conscientious and personable. Many thanks as always to the team

A great family meal in a hidden away pub near Bodmin moor. Really good value and delicious starters, mains and desserts. Pork dish (in the picture) was full of flavours and looked great. Thanks to the chef and team for a great meal. Good lunch stop after visiting the Cornwall at War Museum nearby.

Impromptu lunch after a gentle stroll, only had a few small courses but all were superb, my Crab tagliatelle was especially good. Will be back for the full experience!

Sarah and I had lunch here today to celebrate our wedding anniversary. The meal was outstanding service was friendly and I can’t get over the value. We both had 3 courses Sarah had a large glass of white and I had 2 orange juice and tonic and the bill was £57. Can’t recommend highly enough.

Really cozy inn and pub with very friendly staff and great burger. They have a very nice campsite - good value - on a field next to the inn.

7 of us went to the Rising Sun for the first time last week. We were a party of 4 adults and 3 teenagers. There was plenty of parking when we arrived and we entered through the bar where we ordered drinks before being shown to our table. The restaurant itself is lovely and has retained its traditional feel. We were brought water for the table and our waitress (who was extremely professional - friendly, efficient and knowledgeable) gave us the menus and talked me through the dairy-free options. As the food is all cooked fresh, I was able to choose to have all but one of the items on the menu. The food was outstanding: we had three courses and between us tried the sardines, bread and olives, crab tagliatelle, curried salmon, scotch egg, hake, steak, steak pie, sorbet and pavlova. All were delicious and well presented. We had a lovely evening and will definitely return.

Polite, helpful staff and very good food, high quality ingredients, well prepared. We popped in on the way from Cornwall at War museum near-by. It was in between lunch and dinner service, but luckily there is a bar menu available in afternoons. We had whitebait, lamb arrancini and cheesy chips. All very tasty, enjoyed by all of us including our young kids. Good selection of bar snacks too. Choice of ales/ciders on tap could be wider, but we were still able to pick two different pints and both were great.

Having watched the latest version of Rick Steins Cornwall, we went to see the historical Altarnun church & then on to The Rising Sun Inn for a meal. We were a party of 11 visiting from Ireland - 3 generations of family and dog. Our meal was just superb - steaks perfectly done as requested, lamb mouthwatering, delicious fish and tasty pies, all beautifully presented. They obviously have a very talented chef - which I really didn’t expect in a rural inn. The Rising Sun is well worth a detour to sample their cuisine. And I must not omit to mention the service - so friendly and very efficient. I only wish we lived closer and I’d be back to repeat our experience.

We were on Bodmin and needed dog friendly dining. Looked a bit tatty on arrival but went inside and it was cosy, friendly and staff were welcoming. Had the set lunch menue which was excellent value but my word, the food was outstanding. The sole melted in your mouth and the pork loin was perfect as was the relish and sauces. The mashed potato was an absolute delight. Even the appertiser bread was spot on and the light fluffy butter excelled. Wish we had this gem near us back home in Essex.

The Rising Sun is a lovely venue. Dining area is very pleasant, there's also outdoor seating when weather permits. The food was way beyond pub grub. They were very attentive regarding Allergens( (I'm coeliac, so need GF options) Staff were friendly and attentive. There's a good selection of beers, ciders and spirits. Definitely worth a visit.

A welcoming locals pub. The staff seemed really friendly and happy to help with any requirements. One of the ales that is on tap is produced by a gentleman that frequents the pub too. A relaxing atmosphere.

We were staying at a nearby property for the weekend and fell foul of marketing of a Sunday roast at the Jamaca Inn. It was very poor, so on route back to our accommodation we stopped at the Rising Sun Inn to drown our sorrows at being so foolish. Upon walking into the Rising sun, we instantly noticed it had an atmosphere and the barman/landlord welcomed us. I tried an IPA by a local brewery and it transpired that the brewer was standing next to me. Nice pub, good beer and will certainly be back to try the roast!

Booked a table for lunch after the recommendation of a friend. Staff were friendly and efficient . The pub itself is a typical country pub with no airs and graces but this is what we like in a traditional pub. Food was excellent and certainly by far the best pub food we have had in a long time. Not the cheapest food but certainly worth the money. We will be back in the near future

Without doubt the best steak I've eaten in many years. Beautifully cooked and presented. The pint of Wadsworth amarillo gold was also excellent. I love the fact that the bar is traditional pub and the restaurant area is quite contemporary.

Really wonderful hidden gem. Such a lovely pub, staff are all really great and the food was amazing, we went for a Sunday roast, I am dairy intolerant and the chef made an amazing broccoli puree in place of the cauliflower cheese, it was really delicious. Our starters and desserts were all amazing as well. 10/10 recommend.

We are so fortunate to have such a lovely Inn close to us. The food is exceptional and I’m working my way through the gin menu! There are a few more no-alcohol drink choices now for the non-drivers/drinkers. Hard pushed to say which, for me, is best - evening dinner or Sunday roasts. I love them both. Service is cheery. Lovely wine list. Relaxed atmosphere with a friendly buzz.

Pre dining drink at a busy proper bar obviously used by regulars, or if preferred you can also sit in a soft furnished lounge area on the way to the restaurant. We selected from the set menu, great cooking, well balanced, imaginative and so flavoursome . Top relaxed and knowledgeable service all at a very reasonable price. Our first visit and we'll be back!

Booked a table for dinner based on other reviews and we were not disappointed! It was a quiet Wednesday evening and it was the three of us and several locals. To begin my husband had the spicy scotch egg and I helped my son with a couple of his Korean chicken wings - both dishes were fantastic and very tasty. For mains my son had the burger, my husband the steak and ale pie and I had the sirloin steak which I have to say was the best I have had in a very long time! The accompanying lettuce wedge served with a crispy topping, with mint and garlic was inspired - Miller and Carter take note! Too full for desserts and whist we finished our drinks, we sat and chatted to our fellow patrons and the lovely young lady behind the bar. A fantastic meal, with good company and would highly recommend seeking out this gem of a place if in the area - you won’t regret it!

Only had the soup for lunch, but it was delicious. Staff were super friendly as were locals who told us Aussie visitors about the things to see and do in the area. Will be back for dinner this week for sure!

After a blustery, cold and very wet Sunday drive over Bodmin Moor it was such a delight to stumble across the Rising Sun Inn. We were given a warm welcome and settled in to the bar for Sunday Roast ... and what a lunch! Stunning quality beef that melted in the mouth with a lovely selection of seasonal veg. Sticky toffee pudding was light and rich with a creamy vanilla ice cream - delightful. The locally brewed stout beer was another surprise too! All in all a real gem of a pub - looking forward to returning soon!

Not the easiest place to find. Well worth it when you realise you are sitting in a traditional pub/restuarant offering such outstanding well sourced food. Cooked by a talented chef, with support from a great team. We felt this was the best meal we had had in a long time. Superb value

We visited for Sunday lunch, and were so impressed with the food, we came back for more to sample the main menu which was even better. Do visit if you can get a table, this is a little gem of a place with excellent drinks and a cosy pub with open fire as well as the restaurant.

Our experience did not compare at all with other reviews. The food was very expensive.£22 for Pie and Mash and £18 for Burger and Chips. The latter I found quite unpleasant. Service was mediocre. This place has gone way downhill in my view, we will not bother again. To Rising Sun. Thank you for your prompt response. You seem to suggest that I don't know good quality food when I'm served it. I'm not impressed by your attitude and stand by all I have written. One thing for sure, Gingsters need not fear you as competitors. I note you don't address your "mediocre service".

Extraordinary, fine food and drinks menu. First time back after it changed ownership a couple years back and it was an outstanding experience. Beautifully prepared, fine restaurant food to tempt your taste buds. Really good local producers and warm welcome with very knowledgeable and attentive service team members. The food and wine pairings were a delightful surprise which we would not have normally considered. This will be a firm local favourite to return to time and time again. Great atmosphere and events to bring you back.

Popped in for dinner for the 2 for £15 deal. The restaurant was empty but the bar was busy. Service was pretty non existent but as its a pub perhaps I was expecting more than having to go to the bar to order as the staff just weren't around. The fish pie wasn't very good at all. Too much flour used for the sauce and this had a knock on effect to the taste. Overall, not impressed and I won't be rushing back to eat again. Perhaps the main menu would taste better.....

partner picked this place as a lunch to finish my birthday weekend and what a fantastic choice. It was warm, pleasant and welcoming. Service was fantastic and the food was unbelievably good. We stumbled upon this pub last year and vowed to return on our next visit to Cornwall. If anything it has improved and is clearly well supported by the locals. The quality and presentation is super and to find on offer a specials menu at an unbelievable price was an added extra. The a la carte menu is wide ranging, sensibly priced and features locally sourced produce. Staff are bright young and engaging. Just wish we lived nearby.
