Picked up a takeaway and watched them prepare the food. The rubbery chicken is pre poached and scooped into the plastic container along with a serving of pre prepared vegetables - topped off with a ladle of the respective sauce poured over the top. This is far from freshly cooked Chinese food prepared in a wok - it’s production line assembly with no concern for the taste or quality. Not surprisingly it tastes much as you would expect - disgracefully bad. Not even fit for the dog bowl. Avoid like the plague.

Me and my partner normally order from here about 5/6 times a month. We are quite picky eaters so as soon as we ask for my partners first dish they know exactly who we are. The quality of the food is always amazing and the delivery time is unbelievable, it always arrives within half an hour of ordering no matter how complicated our order is. They have always gone out of their way to accommodate us! Honestly couldn’t fault! Would rate six stars if I could! Would highly recommend!!! (Yes we love Chinese lol)

I haven’t used Rickshaw Chinese Takeaway for years after a rather unpleasant experience with the manager/owner many years ago when I first moved to Bruton which really upset me over a very large expensive family order, and the manager/owner’s rudeness and poor customer care. So as you can imagine it therefore took a great deal for me to return my custom and place an order, against my principle. The young girl that answered the phone was friendly, polite and quickly answered my question. The order took over the time by about 15 minutes suggested for it to arrive of 20 minutes. Which was ok for me but would have been a problem maybe if I was entertaining. I did feel it was quite pricey at £14.00 for just two dishes, but I haven’t seen the prices go up so perhaps this is an average takeaway price. The special fried rice was nice but once you had eaten the pieces at the top it was just rice mainly, with nothing throughout or at the bottom. It was however very disappointing that the king prawn sweet and sour in batter dish was over cooked. So much so I had to leave the majority of the batter as it was too hard and unpleasant some of the King Prawns were not succulent because of it too. I was hoping that I would be reintroduced to the takeaway but sadly not! I was left rather unimpressed and lighter in my purse for it. In future I’m quite happy to cook my own chinese and save the money regardless of how tired I feel.

On a sub-zero Friday night in Bruton staying at Mint Leaf Cottage my best friend and I just wanted to hang-out (sans kids!) with wine, a movie and some yummy food! We couldn’t resist settling for a cheeky takeout and couldn’t have been more delighted with our choice. A quick hop, step and jump across the road from the cottage Rickshaw’s is a Bruton institution loved by locals and visitors alike. We ordered far too much food – more than we were able to polish off (whoops!) - but the server was polite enough not to pass judgement as the order just kept on coming…. Chicken Chow Mein is a perennial favourite of mine and this was accompanied with a delicious dish of Rickshaw Special Fried Rice – YUM YUM!!! Service was quick, polite and the premises were clean and unusually large (plenty of room to sit down for those of us waiting for our order – this really is a popular place!). Recommended for Chinese takeout – and a few ‘English’ dishes too!

I don't know how they are still in business when they charge £22 for half a duck - that is just 'okay'. We also had a beef dish where the meat was extremely tender - clearly good quality. But the sauce was a bit sickly. And worst of all was a lemon chicken dish that smelt hiddeous - like toilet cleaner.Nice interior and service was fine.Food is just a tiny bit better than the 2 takeaways in wincanton (neither are good) at 4x the price.

After a quick google search of "good local Chinese restaurants" this one came up tops in trip advisor so we decided to pay it a visit. We actually live in Castle Cary and wanted to eat out locally but theThai was fully booked and sadly there is very little other choice in castle cary, so Bruton it was!The restaurant was not busy, probably about a quarter full and therefore being that this is a fairly large restaurant it did lack atmosphere. The service was good this cannot be faulted at all. For food we ordered starters of prawn crackers and fried duck wraps ( won ton) which were really lovely and well cooked, very tasty and surprisingly light for something that is fried. For the mains we ordered egg fried rice - one portion is plenty for 2 people, along with crispy shredded beef and honey duck. All portion sizes were great and the food again well cooked, hot throughout and very tasty,Presentation of the food was also very good - it's nice when a restaurant clearly makes the effort to present their food well with touches of garnish or the way it is displayed on a plate - makes you think if they are proud of how its presented it must taste good!My only criticism here is that the main courses are a little on the higher end/ pricey side , main courses £11 - £14, with a few coursed £9.50 , I'd be more inclined to become a repeat customer if courses were a little cheaper.Despite this I would still recommend this restaurant.

MORE AT TripAdvisor

We used to eat very regularly at the Rickshaw - on average a couple of times a week. Although possibly not quite up to the level of the very best Chinese restaurants in the country, it was certainly the best in the area. It was always somewhat more expensive than it should have been but one accepted that in view of its location in a relatively quiet country backwater and the quality of the food and ingredients.About three years things ago changed. The prices stayed pretty much the same but the portions diminished considerably in size sometimes to half of what they had been. In addition, the extra "special " Chinese ingredients disappeared from the dishes. After a few weeks, the restaurant closed its doors although the takeaway remained openHaving heard that the Rickshaw was once again open as a restaurant, and having suffered pretty awful Chinese food elsewhere in the vicinity, we decided to visit for a special occasion in the hopes that things had changed. The menu was a pale shadow of its former self with very few choices on offer though we were told that we could have dishes not on the restaurant menu (but which were on the takeaway menu) if we wished. Certainly I am not faulting the food because it is still better than most other Chinese restaurants in the area. Sadly, the lack of more "interesting" ingredients still holds sway and the portions seem to have got even smaller than they were. Presentation if anything, has probably improved but prices remain well above average. The reduction in the choices available on the menu is limiting and rather disappointing. So basically, it's a very overpriced restaurant where corners seem to have been cut in every direction. We know that they could redress matters very easily and with very little extra cost in the price of their ingredients and quantities but it would seem that they really couldn't care less. This is reflected in the fact that the restaurant is always empty.Sadly, we are unlikely to be returning there again or recommending anyone else to visit in the future until they get their act together.

I'm commenting about the restaurant and not the takeaway. Some of the best restaurant meals I've ever had have been at Rickshaw. It's in my top 5 favourites in the world. The service and food are superb. The seafood is particularly special and my wife and I love that kind of thing, we really appreciate finding good, fresh seafood. I really like duck as well, they serve amazing duck! Everything tastes fresh and genuinely prepared (I mean it seems freshly cooked by a skilled chef)On a side note that won't be applicable to most restaurant go-ers, my family went for my Dad's birthday. Having chatted to me while originally taking the booking the owners decorated our table with birthday sequins and a nice "happy birthday" banner. Really nice touch. Amazing homemade tiramisu that night too.To me this is the perfect kind of restaurant; people who are passionate about food, have the skill to pull it off, care about service and their customers.

My partner and I went to Bruton to have lunch at another restaurant and they were unable to seat us for a very long time. We decided to try somewhere else and discovered the Rickshaw. We were immediately impressed by the decor and the pleasant waitress. We were seated and presented with what was a relatively short but interesting menu. After ordering we were very surprised by what we were served. This was not the typical Chinese in heavy sauces. It was what I would describe as nouvelle Chinese, if such a thing exists. It was wonderfully prepared and very delicious. Probably the best Chinese I gave ever eaten! The staff were friendly and helpful and I cannot say enough about the cuisine. I would highly recommend the Rickshaw to anyone who loves good food.

It's tough giving a local takeaway a bad review but unfortunately the word disgusting only comes to mind. Firstly the shredded duck pancakes: costing as much as it does you really shouldn't get a badly chopped white onion instead of spring onions and some really inedible, dry duck. The 'roasted duck' in oyster sauce was greasy, chewy and even my dog refused to eat it. finally the king prawn dish consisting of tiny shrimps and whole uncooked vegetables was the cherry on the cake. The staff had no idea what each dish consisted of and so were little help when choosing from the huge selection on offer. if you ever find yourself there may i recommend the cheesy chips.

My mother, sister and I came to Somerset for the weekend for a wedding and after a long look on the internet and wander around town we settled on Rickshaw Chinese as it seemed the only place which accomodated our requirements - nice restaurant (not too cheap & cheerful as the sun inn but not very expensive like At The Chapel or Truffles Brassiere). We went at 8pm and it was very quiet so I can't vouch for the service when it's busy, but it was a very friendly welcome and extremely attentive (but not intrusive) service. I fancied king prawns with satay sauce and could see on the menu they had a chicken satay skewer starter. They were more than happy to make the king prawn as a main with the sauce I wanted despite it being a non menu item. The starters mains and sides were all beautifully presented and most importantly tasted fantastic. Little touches were nice, such as splitting the crispy seaweed we ordered (1 portion) into 3 dainty dishes so we didn't have to dig into the same dish. I was so impressed I have joined trip advisor this evening to leave a well deserved review! Would definitely recommend to anyone staying anywhere nearby! They even gave us a £5 reward voucher to discount our next visit - I wish we had the time to come again before leaving!
