Will not be going to another Rick Stein restaurant any time soon , Did not think this restaurant was value for money. I only had 4 prawns for £16 and portion of chips was a bit on the short side for £22

We have been going to Rick Stein in Winchester as a family for 10 years and have spent, as a family, about £6k over that time. What we like(d) about it was the gluten free options, cheerful staff and generous portions. Our girls, now 14, have always eagerly anticipated our trips as we were always well looked after. Our visit on 3 Nov, the day before their 10th anniversary, was just disappointing. It is NOT a cheap, fast food restaurant and we often indulge in their excellent traditional fish and chips. For an adult portion it is £23, for fish & chips. Usually, we would be unable to finish an adult portion. On this occasion, we had less than 10 chunky chips each and a laughably small piece of fish. Whilst well executed, it simply was not good enough for the price and given the past experiences. Having read other recent reviews I can see that we are not the first to have this experience. Such a shame that, after 10 years, we feel the relationship is over and can’t see ourselves returning again.

Scallops starters were covered with tinned tomato sauce which was criminal as the scallops were very nice but the sauce overpowered their delicate flavour. Fish & chips was average & very small piece of fish. The mushy peas were dry & tasteless. House salad was not fresh. I had to remove many wilted leaves. Only the Winchester pudding was ok. I don't think Mr Rick Stein has visited this restaurant recently as I think he would be horrified to have his name associated to such a disappointing experience.

I like loveable old Rick but the pricing at his Winchester restaurant is outrageous. My rather dull and plain starter consisted of FOUR PRAWNS @ £15.95 !!! (shop-bought equivalent cost is £1.13). I will not be returning.

Disappointing. We have been going to Rick Steins’s since the first day it opened in Winchester. We haven’t been for 12 months and decided to go to celebrate our wedding anniversary: it is now overpriced and disappointing, The good bits: - Beetroot Salmon and Moules starters. - Turbot Gratin and Indonesian Seafood Curry - Staff service is prompt and attentive The bad bits: - one of the pieces of sourdough bread with the modules was dried up (obviously cut some time before) - French Fry sides were over cooked and hard, like from the bottom of the fryer - Pear and Frangipani tart was a disaster ( pastry overbaked and hardly any filling in the pastry case) - When we leaving at 9.15 and waiting for our coats in the bar, cigarette smoke was wafting in from the three staff members who were sat on outside table drinking wine and smoking Still a nice evening, but not worth £180.

The Stein Empire maybe pretty darn large these days but I'm delighted to say they still deliver the goods. When I called ahead of our booking, Niall was great in allocating the requested window table and the young lady who received and looked after us all evening (Sorry didn't get her name) was excellent throughout. On her recommendation we tasted and selected both the superb Camel Valley Brut Rose from Cornwall as well as the fabulous Care Blanco Sober Lias Rose. We chose hugs and fabulous scallops and sumptuous crab linguine to start. These were followed by Dover Sole and my divine Turbot in the butteriest of sauces... Although delicious I found £50 per plate a little too rich. Nothwithstanding, the evening proved a delight in all other ways.

Had to be done. In we went, no booking, no worries. Although the restaurant was busy we were greeted very politely and quickly shown to our table. Service was extremely efficient and just flowed in a way I have never seen before, the head waiter and 2 young servers worked with the most incredible efficiency it was a pleasure to watch. The food was as good as expected with the made just for Winchester pudding being the cherry on the trifle, a £1 from each pudding sold going to the Winchester historical society. Not cheap but well worth a visit.

My husband and I visited early evening last Saturday. Staff were friendly and helpful and we were looking forward to a lovely meal as we’re both fans of Ricks and love seafood. I ordered the crab linguine which was just ok but the pasta was very over cooked. My husband had the fish soup which was thin, spicy and without much fish flavour. My main was scallops with pancetta and lentils. It arrived as just three very small and dry scallops in the shells with an over whelming tomato sauce and maybe a spoonful of lentils and a dressing of pesto slopped on. My husband had the fish curry which although had a lovely sauce contained two tiny pieces of fish and two prawns… It had been a lovely day for us so I didn’t want to make a fuss and spoilt it but our waiter (who I think he was the manager?)) asked if everything was ok when he presented the bill…. I mentioned the scollops not being great but he didn’t seem to bothered…and was more interested in taking payment … On the whole very disappointed, we expected quality … mediocre and expensive.

Overall the meal was excellent although the scallops were a little small and flavour lost in the tomato sauce. A small point but the chairs are a little low to the table height meaning you do have to sit up ! It would be nice to have fish knives or finer knives when eating fish- present ones are a little clunky. However , these are only small issues and the food was fantastic. Flavours in the ragout were out of this world ! Staff were super and very professional. A great night !

First time here at the Winchester restaurant, so went with no preconceptions of what to expect. It couldn't have been any better, from the moment we walked in the waiter Ali A was very helpful and friendly nothing was to much trouble. The food was fantastic from start to finish, our son had the Fruits De Mar Large it was a show stopper after his Oysters to start with, my wife had the Winchester pudding which was to die for she said. We were happy with the final bill, as everything was first class. We will return when we are back down there again. Ps forgot we all enjoy the music from the live musicians nice touch.

We had a family lunch at the Rick Stein's restaurant in Winchester on the 2nd June, 2024, and went for 3 set menus. Fish cakes from the starter (cod) and main course (salmon) were both very dry, gaspacho was ok but the taste was far from what should cost over 9GBP. But the 'cherry on top" was the Spelt risotto that was really bad: the vegetables were over-cooked and soggy, parmesan was grated before the plate was served and did not look as freshly grated. It may sound alright for some guests but this is not your local pub! Green beans do not need to be boiled until soggy! This is the place that charges 50GBP for a plate of fish! I did not raise concern on the day as I was there with two kids who are getting excited about fine dining and I did not want to ruin their experience. I do not think the restaurant is run by Rick Stein but it is rather a franchise where chefs who cannot cook or can't be bothered, and use Rick's name instead to charge a fortune for a 'bad pub meal". Very disappointed, will not recommend and will not come back.

Was so looking forward to lunch at this menu and the first two courses of the set lunch menu did not disappoint. Arrancini and beef rending, both well cooked and very tasty. However the ginger syrup steamed pudding let the whole thing down. It was served looking lovely but on cutting in to it, it was stone cold with cold custard to match. T9ld staff and they took it away to be warmed. Brought it back a few minutes later and again it was stone cold! Apparently it was new to the menu and had only come into the restaurant the day before so they were getting used to it. Can't quite believe chefs in a Rick Stein restaurant don't know how to heat up a pudding! Apologetic staff but no offer to reduce the bill!

We will not return :( I live in the city centre and over the years I have been to this restaurant only four times and on each ocasion I have been disappointed , but my friend had never been so we went and again my experience was as it has always been disappointing. There did not seem to be any management present. Otherwise, I would have spoken to them. When we arrived there were only two other guests in the whole restaurant, the head waiter was abrupt bordering on rude, a young man was assisting him who was delightful , at one point the headwaiter moaned about the young man to us referring to him as " the new start" which I thought was highly unprofessional. The venue to me smacks of a canteen atmosphere, dishes crashing etc and despite the restaurant ultimately being less than half full, the noise from our fellow diners just chatting was unbelievably loud. We were told that even though there were only four people in the restaurant , our main courses would take 15 minutes, and they took 30 minutes to arrive . We had to ask to give our order twice . We had the scallops and prawns in a white sauce topped with cheese and breadcrumbs. Not pleasant, the sauce was stodgy thick and grey , heavy with flour . I did say that it had been unpleasant to eat when the dishes were collected to the young waiter. Again, no management approached me, but someone removed one portion of French fries from our bill as a result. I think!! You can tell that we did not enjoy the experience, and yes, I agree with other reviews vastly overpriced. Come on, Rick Stein, you lovely guy. You need to check on the Winchester restaurant that bares your name. I'm sad to have written this review. xxx

I brought my niece for lunch as a special treat. She was very excited to eat here, and we had a nice time together, I just wish the food had been a little better. We ordered the set three-course menu--she had the mackerel pâté starter, which she said was good, although she didn't get enough toast for the jar of pâté served. I had the kale and goat cheese frittata, which was pretty average. For the main course, she had the chicken shepherd's pie, which looked fairly uninspiring. I had the hake and mussel stew, which came with (I'm not kidding) just two tiny pieces (about 1 inch square each) of fish. The dish was almost entirely mussels, which were good, but calling it a hake and mussel stew is totally misrepresenting what I was served. The puddings were yummy--she had the pot au chocolat and I had the lemon posset. Both were creamy, decadent, and delicious. Our server seemed undertrained--he frequently disappeared for extended periods of time and at no point came back to check on us. I had to flag him down vigorously to get more toast for my niece's pâté, refills of water, etc. They were very busy, and we got right in without a reservation on a Saturday, so I'm grateful for that, but I wish it had been a bit more special for my niece. The food and atmosphere was, overall, pretty meh.

Incredibly disappointing lunch with a terrible menu, awfully slow service and pretty basic food. £100 for 6 oysters, 2 small fillets of bream with a slimey skin and drizzle of sauce, rice that was microwaved and hard, crab pasta that had more garlic in it than most could stomach and a bottle of water. Rip off. The staff were disinterested, bored and failed to make eye contact throughout our meal and looked as if they wanted to be anywhere other than serving us and to be honest, we wished we’d gone somewhere else. Left hungry and angry. We won’t return.

We visited on the 30th December. Although it was busy they were able to accommodate 2 of us for a lunch without a booking . I had not realised there was a Rick Stein outside of Cornwall so was excited to try. The food and service were excellent and although the festive menu looked good I opted for the fish and chips which were lovely. The fish white and flaky plenty of chips and tasty mushy peas and tartare. I also had a glass of muscadet wine and we both had coffee. The staff were so friendly and welcoming despite being busy . It was a lovely experience and I would definitely go back when I am next in Winchester.

First time visit, was very surprised to find in Winchester, I am glad we did. Managed to get a table in restaurant, busy lunch time session without booking, staff very friendly and helpful, very attentive without being too over the top. The menu was very good with lots to choose from, some great combinations, some old favourites and some new. All cooked to perfection, great taste and quality ingredients, Tables not too crowded together, very nice decor, loverly atmosphere to dine in, the staff made it special in their great service. When you think of what you are eating, where you are eating, you can tell Rick has not just put his name to something, it has been thought through. Also on comparison with other restaurants, good value for money, you are not just paying for the name, it is premium food with premium service, without being fussy or pretentious. Well done to Rick and to the Staff here.

Had lunch in Rick Stein's last week when we visited Winchester Christmas market. It is well laid out with reasonable space between the tables and decorated in relaxing colours. We chose from the A la carte menu and all the food was very good and served hot. The crab linguine was outstanding. I asked for a wine recommendation but they tried to upsell to a very expensive wine which I declined. However the more reasonably priced Fiano I had with the crab was a perfect partner. Service was good but we did notice the staff were too busy talking amongst themselves to thank us/say goodbye as we left. We wouldn't hesitate to dine here again if we were in Winchester.

It’s always a good meal at the Rick Stein restaurants . Polite positive welcome and reception and shown to the requested corner table, much appreciated, thank you. We both chose escallops, six in total at £43.90 is a bit heavy I quietly thought and was a bit miffed at the quantity and size . The food, dover sole and Turbot whilst good was served with very average boiled potatoes. No alcohol . One orange juice One Affrogatto and one espresso . Came to £180.55 inc service. Not fine dining, not a 5 course tasting menu so in truth all seemed a bit pricy to me. On the other hand the place was full so clearly not.

I had hake with sautéed potatoes which was average at best. Although the hake was cooked well, it was sitting on only a few small slices of potato which, even if they had been sautéed, were now soggy. I was expecting more potato, and definitely...

…… during a recent visit to Winchester. On the first occasion we ate off the full menu, and on the second we had the two courses for set price. The food was fine on both occasions, although as a gluten-free diner the two course option...

We enjoyed the food here but l felt overwhelmed by the noise. The background music was so unbalanced that we could just here the bass reverberating without any idea of what music it was. Or was it the sound of air conditioning? No idea, just...

These were the best mussels, I have ever had, also had sardines for starter and these were so fresh and cooked to perfection.

Service was friendly and efficient and the food was good. Scallops tempura and a halloumi starter were much enjoyed by my companions. The aloo sagh one of them ordered as a main course was considered good but so far from authentic as to disappoint -...

Great lobster and service Waitress told us about 15 mins wait as very busy lunchtime and delivered some complimentary olives which was a nice touch. Food arrived and faultless. Friendly waitress and rest of staff. Definitely will return

Perfectly adequate food - just not great value. Starter of crab linguine so garlicky you couldn't taste the crab. Lobster & chips nice but small lobster.

Overrated and overpriced its a restaurant no longer exclusive to Cornwall. Are products brought in daily fresh? I would rather visit the individual restaurant owners who struggle without the big name behind the facade. Not my kind of place.

We went for a family supper and had a fabulous evening. Our waiter, Ali, was excellent and is such an asset to the restaurant - thank you. The food and wine was superb. This is my favourite Winchester restaurant and just lovely.

The Staff are wondeful The quality of the food is good. The noise level in the resturant is not pleasant and impedes converstion probable as it is all hard surfaces. This may be an age related thing and younger people may find it "buzzie"

We had the lobster and chips. Absolutely delicious! Service was very good. The restaurant was bright and airy. I’d also recommend the Chalky’s Bite beer and the Rick Stein Spanish White.

This used to be a very rare and therefore special place. A tea/coffee shop with the coffee made in a separate kitchen. There was also an ice cream machine in the attached anteroom. This meant that unlike every other coffee shop whether a chain or an independent it had a unique USP, somewhere to have a quiet drink, breakfast, lunch or afternoon tea where you could have a chat with a friend or family. Unfortunately that has changed. It now has an incredibly loud buzzing from the ice cream freezer and the noise of the coffees being made right in the main area. The food is still lovely, the staff are friendly and helpful but it is now a noisy place just like all the rest. What a real shame.

A beautiful location, a splendid restaurant, friendly and attentive staff but sadly the food was somewhat disappointing. The vegetables were extremely limp (over cooked in fact). The homemade pie wasn’t up to par, the filling and gravy were both tasty and enjoyable, but the pie had spent too long under the pass. It was extremely hard and the pastry on the side and base of the pie impossible to cut with a knife….a disappointment.

Most delicious chips, fish cake and mushy peas I’ve had for some time. Piping hot, crispy, freshly cooked. Simple, basic premises but friendly service and most importantly top class chips and food.
