Authentic Indian food Loved there lamb biryani

First takeaway was delicious. AND the owner went out his way to get a rice to me that i thought I had ordered, but turned out I hadn't. This is further away than what I would like, but it's now at the top of my list for indian.

first time eating in for a while and we won't be back. had the most dreadful service from a waiter who seemed to be in his own world. despite being the only people eating in for a while the service was some of the most dreadful I've ever experienced. from not clearing plates, to messing up the order (despite repeating it back) to not topping up water to no apology for a piece of dish sponge in a mango lassi to making the customer self transfer their food to takeaway dishes, extraordinarily bad. a real shame as the food is good. the this person should be be serving anyone. ever.

This is my new favourite Indian takeaway! Our order included butter chicken and naan. They weren't overly sweetened but was aromatic. The fenel seeds in the peshwari was a nice touch. Also, there was loads of meat with sauce in the mains, and the food wasn't overly oily like most other places.

it was quiet and unprepossessing. and the food was very good - a. little wait but because cooked fresh flavours delicious - paratha was a bit heavy

Up there in the top 5 eating experiences I’ve had at an Indian restaurant in the uk. Staff were so kind and accommodating and the food was excellent. Cannot recommend highly enough.

Madras de cordero - un clásico y cocinado a la perfección - sehr gut Pollo tikka - Lo reúne todo. What a find walking down street looking something to eat on our anniversary and checked the previous reviews for this place where good and they weren't lying. Best Indian we have had in a long time. Highly recommend. And if want an acholic drink can just nip next door and bring your bottle in with you. Very friendly staff. Thank you for your hospitality made our nite x

Went to Rice n Spice as I was working nearby. Excellent choice on the menu. Lovely curries. While in Scotland I thought I would try the haggis samosa. Very delicately spiced with a great tamarind dip. The mixed grill was perfect. Would highly recommend, it's a shame I live over 200 miles away. I would be a regular.

Small place with a cafe feel. Great service. One of the best starters (paneer tikka) and tastiest curries (North Indian chilli garlic lamb) I’ve ever had. Delicious naan, lovely pickles with the popadums. It’s BYO. All in all, absolutely superb. Not to be missed.

Second time I have ordered from Rice n Spice when visiting Edinburgh/Musselburgh. Very enjoyable - will order next time I am here for sure.

This is a small gem! We ordered two take away curries to eat at the beach, and we really loved the food! It wasn't heavy, the chicken bits were generous size and very tender, spices were just right. A very delicious meal. We will be back

Had food at this place a couple of weeks ago. It is a little gem of a restaurant. The food quality was really good, with minimal oil used, which is really good. Very reasonably priced and the service was good too!

I was craving for some Indian food and came across this new restaurant. Instructions were followed, delivery was fast, delivery person was lovely and professional. But the best were the dishes. I order the coconut rice with lamb chilli garlic sauce amongst other things when I tell you it was delicious it was! Lamb was succulent, rice was nice and fluffy very authentic spices. Go check it out!

Food was late, then late again for revised time. Food was okay but 2 dishes did not match description, no raita or sauce with biryani and not Tikka chicken with chilli garlic. First and last time with this restaurant

Tried for the first time this weekend. Will definitely go again. Food was delicious and service was great too. The manager was able to answer all questions my friend had about dietary requirements for future visits with family members. BYOB is a definite bonus helping us to still have a night out with friends. Highly recommend!

For the curry kings that usually have too much to say, we’re going to keep it sweet and simple… North Indian - so many ingredients this will make your mouth dance, water and sing 👌🏻 Chicken tika - lucky the other dishes were so good and the chicken was gorgeous, however too close to butter chicken than chicken tikka. Lamb madras - just how you want it. Meat was melt in you mouth and the sauce wooooooooooh the sauce and the spice on point. Stop reading and order. Portobellos new king of curry! We say that with a heavy heart because sometimes you want the hidden gem to remain your own but we have to share this with the world. Always had excellent food at the Passage to India so why not try their new restaurant. It didn’t disappoint great lamb chops and superb garlic chilli chicken. Will definitely return .. friendly service too

This is the best curry we’ve had in a very long time. It took a while to prepare it, but that’s because they were making it fresh. Amazing flavours! It’s more of a takeaway really but there are tables if you want to eat in. They don’t have alcohol, but you can bring your own, and they provide wine glasses. Staff were very friendly and prices were excellent , especially for Edinburgh. We will definitely come back next time we are in Edinburgh.

Saw small and beautiful Indian restaurant. Came for dinner with my friend . I had butter chicken and my friend had chilli garlic lamb both so delicious. Service is great too. Definitely recommend. Will back soon

I ordered a chicken bhuna, and although piping hot, the sauce was very watery and not very appealing. I expected a much thicker sauce. Even when I added lots of rice, there was still a lot of watery sauce around. Really disappointing. Poor quality really

I'm so chuffed, because I had a favourite place years ago that did the best rogan josh, but it shut down. I've never been able to find one that was anywhere near that good, till now! I came here tonight with my kid and we had the best meal, that roman josh was the best I've ever had, let alone the one I had from that old favourite from years ago! Not to mention the service was so lovely, they couldn't do enough for us!

4.5/5 It was hot, real hot. The curry kings were embroiled in a Heat haze, aka a heat shimmer. Too exhausted to fend for themselves they took a chance on a flyer that flew down from the heavens “rice and spice”. This was the morning after another tartan army victory and the curry kings were in dire need of some hearty food to soak up the over exuberance from the night before. At first when the order arrived it felt like a mirage too good to be true, however “the proof of the pudding is in eating” (Roy Hodgson). The order: £61 3 popadoms (we got 6 😍) 1 lime pickle 1 Ghee rice 1 coconut rice 1 onion Bhaji (3 pieces) 1 vegetable pakoras (500 pieces) 1 chicken tikka 1 chicken North Indian 1 lamb madras The popadoms - we got 3 more than we asked pretty decent standard, could have been crispier but understandable for a delivery. Lime pickle - the stuff of dreams could eat like it was cereal - please give more. Extras - mango chutney, chilly onions, riata Rice - couldn’t really tell difference between ghee and coconut apart from the cashew nuts in the latter. Please note both were beautiful and felt freshly made. Onion bhaji - lovely little pancakes full of flavour and went down a treat. Only problem was there wasn’t more. Vegetable pakoras - different class - crispy Little critters that came by the bucket load. Different from the traditional veg pakora but for once size did not matter. Chicken tikka - having tried the sit down version this seemed to be a tad more coconut infused but was still something special. Chicken North Indian - the hottest by far. Garlic galore a lovely Smokey taste full of flavour. Chicken was lovely “broke up lovely” with a mouthwatering gravy. Lamb madras - “the lamb was tidy, when lamb is good is good” when you get a good lamb dish it’s the sign of a good chef/restaurant. The amount of ingredients in this must make it worthy of a Guinness book of records claim. My mouth is still watering. The 3 curry kings have tried curry’s from John O’ Groats to Timbuktu, however portobello has always been a hot bed for fantastic Indian cuisine. A new contender has not just entered the conversation but close-lined the others out the way. From the glory days of old “the prince balti” to the new pretenders that flattered to deceive” RICE AND SPICE feels like it really could be the real deal. When the Scottish Indian summer is over and it’s safe to venture back outside to avoid sunburn give it a try…your life might just depend on it. The curry kings have spoken… take heid. 4.5/5

Had to call about allergies and they were very helpful on the phone, food was fast, hot and delicious, alloo potatoes were especially nice!

Food was cold when arrived , chicken byriani had 1 piece of chicken in , nann bread was dry , vegetables pakora was broken up in to tiny unreadable pieces and was soggy and chips were cold ,.

Despite arriving close to closing time with a group of ten, they warmly welcomed us and agreed to serve us. The staff was patient and took the time to explain each dish on the menu. The food was delicious and we left with full stomachs. Highly recommend this place for their great food and wonderful service!

The best Indian takeaway that we've had in Edinburgh after trying many others over the past 30 years!! We highly recommend and will be back!😁 Fantastic quality of Indian food-- good price, and portion sizes, a free popadom, delicious flavours with fresh ingredients, cooked perfectly, arrived hot and on time. Ordered- Paneer Buttered Masala (nice paneer pieces in a tasty light smooth cashew buttery sauce) Coconut Rice (delicate long grain basmati rice with coconut/cumin + mustard seeds) Vege Pakora (10 light, non greasy, crispy, small pieces with lots of flavourful spices/spinach/coriander/peas ect) spiced onions (very tasty compared to the usual plastic bag of chilly powder/onions! These are a smaller portion but served in a tomato, spiced, fresh coriander sauce) also ordered 1 popadom. Meal came with 2 sauces and an extra poppadom- small touches like that show that the owners and chefs care about their customers. Thank you! We'll tell our local friends and family about you 🙏
