Rice Box Chinese restaurant and takeaway in Oxford

Delivery took over an hour and a half. Early evening, on a week night. Lid of the box on one of the meals was completely cracked and food was barely warm. Food tasted nice once we'd warmed it up. But we were all so hungry and it was much later than we'd planned to eat so not the best experience. No update from the restaurant via Just Eat to say it was delayed. They blamed traffic/LTNs but it can't have been that bad, to take almost 2 hours to deliver.

Ordered online, they called cancelling the order then wouldn’t help the process of getting my money back

They have one of the most awful toilets I have ever been to. They made an effort decorating the place but they forgot about the toilets, the smell and how dirty it looked made me not want to eat anything. The food was really bad too. I would never go there again.

The Beef Brisket with crispy noodles and Chinese Tea was delicious and satisfying. Standard and quality has remained the same over the years. Love a window seat watching the people of the world pass by 🌏😋

Good quality food, fast service and comfortable seating without too many bells and whistles. Straight to the point and that's it.

Been here a few times now, both takeaway and dining in. It is a family run business on cowley road. The older woman serving was very hospitable and kind, and the food came out quick. The food was flavourful and good temperature - it is what you would expect. One of the only chinese places in Oxford that serves crispy noodles!

Get chicken chow me in if you want to spend the next two days flushing out your entire digestive system

The restaurant offers excellent food quality and a variety of choices. It's a great place to enjoy Chinese cuisine in the city of Oxford. I will definitely come back and highly recommend it. The environment is good and clean, and even better after their recent renovations. I am lucky to have their good staff serving me. I give this restaurant on Cowley Road a 5 out of 5 rating.

Ordered from here today food was sub par didn't even receive the egg fried rice which we paid for chicken was gelatinous the peas in the Curry were crunchy. The orange chicken was more like a desert proper sweet. Safe to say won't be back here. Paid £35 and ate 3 mouthfuls then gave to the bin. Not happy!

Pretty chill place honestly, they was able to give me and four other colleagues of mine our food rather quick even though it was rush hour, super friendly customer service and nice atmosphere

So glad that we found this restaurant; always looking for authentic Chinese food. Lobster noodle was amazing. Really love the braised pork in hot pot. Service was friendly too. Wonton in Shanghai style was so authentic. Highly recommend.

Not happy with the food. We ordered their beef brisket rice and sweet and sour pork with rice. Both were unsatisfactory. The rice seemed kind of stale. Some of the beef pieces were uncooked and raw. And there was barely any pork- it was mostly batter. Will not recommend.

This experience was simply great. Not only did I taste the delicious food from my hometown, but I also had warm service and hospitality.

Had an evening meal here, service was excellent and foods are delicious especially the Shanghai won ton very yummy. Highly recommend to give it try.

£70 worth of food ordered. Came freezing cold. Chips hard and inedible. Chicken gristley and soggy. Really wouldn’t even feed to my dog. Very disappointed do not buy from here I don’t know how they’ve been going so long🤮

Sorry but the food today was absolutely disgusting to the point I called the restaurant as the chicken balls and garlic chicken pieces was soggy and sweaty and dripping with grease and tasted of fish. They kindly sent more out and I gave the old ones back but the new ones was just as bad completely inedible. Won’t be ordering from here again unfortunately it really has put me off.

Very nice food! Only problem is that there was not many noodles in our chow mien and someone in the kitchen was playing loud music. Apart from that, lovely!

The restaurant used to focus on takeaway, and, like its name suggests, mostly serve boxes of rice dishes. When I went again last month, the place has undergone a renovation and 'upgraded' to a restaurant. The dishes it serves are also more upscale than before. The food was good and cheaper than other Chinese restaurants in the area and in Oxford city centre. Only downside: no high chair for baby and the place was a bit cramped.

Missing item when delivered. Chicken balls not quite even warm in temperature. The small amount of actual chicken inside had a horrible jellified texture. Used to order regularly but food has gone downhill.

Very nice. And brilliant customer service. We come here regularly. Chicken is Halal. Awesome.

We arrived at the restaurant after a long trip. By the time we got here, most of the restaurants on Cowley road were shut, luckily this one opened until 11pm. We quickly ordered some of your typical Chinese takeaway dishes - beef ho fun, stir fried noodles etc. And the food was served rather promptly, perhaps there weren't many customers at the time. Quality wise, the food was quite good, and less greasy than some other Chinese's that you would find around this area. The owner was quite friendly and chatty, too. If you don't have too high an expectation, and just want a quick Chinese meal, I'd recommend this one, especially when you have no choice after a night out, when all other restaurants are closed.

My last two orders I've had from the rice box restaurants I ordered the satay chicken and satay sauce a couple of hours after I've vomited and had diarrhoea. I'm not sure if you have changed something in the recipe, didn't cook it fully, left it out too long or given out of date food but I will not be ordering from your restaurant again. I was a loyal customer Always got a weekly meal but I can't order anymore as this has happened Twice in a row now. I cannot find a email address to contact you directly and my anxiety won’t let me call as I hate confrontation.

Food is fantastic, lovely and traditional Chinese food and very tasty and reasonably priced, I've been back a few times now and it's great.

I ordered Chicken Kung Po which was really just fried chicken in sweet-sour souce. Food was served in two minutes and it appeared to be straight from the microwave. This pathetic meal costed me 10£ of my precious money. The restaurant also had an disgusting odour and seemed dirty. Never eat here!

Have ordered from here once before and food was fine but really disappointed tonight to have received wonton soup with completely raw wontons. The meat is bright pink completely undercooked I just can’t believe it. I discovered this after drinking the broth and now I’m terrified i’ll be sick. Egg fried rice and sweet and sour chicken fine. Just really upset about this soup. Have to toss it.

Always great to eat here. Last time was almost 4 years ago. Still remembered by the friendly staff.

One of the worst fast food experiences of my entire life. I made an order at 8:40pm it was to arrive between 9pm-9:20pm it didn’t arrive I phoned up at 9:27pm asked where it was the bloke who turned out to be the manager hung up to ring the driver then rang back got told the driver is near by waited 22 minutes more rang up again told him it wasn’t here he yelled at me & had a tone/attitude with me (this was the manager btw) saying it had been delivered to reception it had not I was outside the hotel the entire time waiting no one came then he passed over the phone to a driver he was calm told me to ask my hotel reception so I did they didn’t get any deliveries so they sent it back out, 15 minutes I finally got my food but they had forgotten an item & replaced it with something else. So after waiting over an hour for my food having to ring up twice about it & having tone/attitude from the manager not to mention him yelling at me down the phone they had forgotten one of my items, truly the worst fast food experience I have ever had & BY FAR the worst customer service I have ever had. Don’t order from here.

Worst customer service ever experienced. Had a delivery amounting to around £20. Unfortunately the food was cold upon delivery. They didn’t seem to fathom this was a possibility, and refused to believe a disappointed customer spending decent money on unsatisfactory food. I’m sure they get plenty of people swindling them by claiming food is cold, but I said I understood that, and reassured them whole heartedly I was not one of these chancers. They refused to communicate with me, being exceptionally rude over the phone and hung up mid conversation several times. No solution was found or explored, it was simply they were right and the customer, in this case myself, was wrong. I’ve no doubt they frequently encounter this issue, and just hope customers buckle when in dispute and fail to demand money back or another solution. Resulting in them making good money whilst serving poor quality food. I can accept in a high output kitchen mistakes are made, and delivery process can leave food cold. What is not acceptable is failing to accept sub-standard food may have been sent out, and help a customer find a solution. And for a disappointed customer to be treated as a liar is unacceptable! Shocking!

A very tired looking place. Always cold and not very comfortable. No atmosphere and the staff struggle to understand the menu. Occasionally the food is good but it's never the same dish twice! I would also strongly suggest you identify the meat dished you order are what you expect. Often the chicken and beef does not taste or look like it and the texture is highly questionable

Ordered a Thai chilli chicken bento box for takeaway. The customer service was good but I can see why so many people complained about getting the wrong order as they were quite busy and mistook my drink order for Pepsi instead of orange tango. The food was alright, the sauce was too sugary sweet for my taste but the ingredients aside from the chicken were generous.

Yuck. Disgusting food I got the wonton soup , milk tea and vegetable spring rolls and all of it had absolutely not flavour . I had to add more salt to my own food . The meat inside the wonton.. I don’t even know what that was but it tasted off. Not good at all in my experience

Had a delicious "house special stir fry noodles." House specials in my personal opinion are always a safe bet if you haven't eaten at the restaurant before. Just like any Chinese fast food, it tasted like some MSG in it (not surprisingly though). (As of 2019) Note they only accept cash. The place was almost empty, and they served me the moment I ran back from the TESCO cash point, like 5 minutes after ordering.

Ordered food at 10.30pm and it arrived at 12.30am freezing cold. Food quality was very poor.

Ordered via Uber Eats, Missing half of our order.. when called to explain that we are missing items and would like them resent to us, We were SHOUTED at down the phone saying that we are lying??? Once I managed to speak to whom I suppose Is the manager，he didn't seem to understand that we are tourists in Oxford leaving tomorrow so his offer of free starter on our next order was not accepted, phone was put down on us 4 times!! World's poorest customer service I have ever experienced

They delivered to the wrong house without asking for any details of the customer. When called the response was to get the food from the wrong address. Wish i could give zero.

I'm quite sure I got food poisoning from this establishment when I ordered crispy noodles and mongolian beef and proceeded to feel ongoing intermittent nausea for several days

Was told I was a liar when requesting a refund despite delivery driver clearly lying to me? Incredibly ridiculous service, food was freezing cold after the driver left it on the doorstep with no knock (I was down there the whole time, with my phone, waiting), phoned back and was told that due to the order name being 'Luke' and apparently a woman answering the door, he asked if the man who ordered this was there to which this woman apparently replied "leave it on the doorstep, it might be a friend's". I was quite shocked he'd lie to me like that as 1) I was down here the whole time so would have heard someone at the door, and 2) the only woman in the house being our housemate who was upstairs working and didn't come out of her room the entire wait-time. My friend who was waiting for the food with me called the restaurant back and explained this to him and was prompty told that it was actually him lying, and that a refund would not be coming ("not in your life", "no way, no way, no way" were the words used I believe, not exactly professional is it?). What a horrible man, I will not be purchasing from here again, which will leave you a good £50 per month out of pocket as me and my friend used to order from here almost every week 🤷 Really not that hard to admit you're wrong and offer a refund, but I guess this guy was feeling childish today.

Absolutely horrible , this is the worst place I have ever ordered from the food was cold as hell , the coke cans were flat as anything ! From the delivery man coming to the door an hour and a half late after 2 mins it was in the bin!

Very disappointed this evening! We've ordered from here a number of times and enjoyed the meal, so we weren't expecting to be delivered inedible food!!! Our garlic chicken was undercooked, our calamari was overcooked and the prawn toast tasted of perfume more than anything else! Upon calling the restaurant we were rudely greeted on the phone and called liars once we told him about the food, the man who had answered told us he had prepared the food himself and is a chef of 20 years who doesn't make mistakes and refused to listen or help in any way. We will not be ordering again!! Food is about as good as their attitude!!!

The starter combo arrived and it.was.Terrible. Good flavours and intentions BUT all completely soggy and jumbled. This was because they hadn't put the sauce in a separate container, therefore it was was all swimming the same box; great for the environment but not great for ruining my New Year's day meal. The chicken and pineapple curry was hugely underwhelming. The sauce was watery and tasteless. To too of my dismay, the can of Tango I ordered was room temp... Just expected to to be cold. All in all just dissapointing 😔

Most disgusting Chinese food ever! Called to complain about sweet and sour chicken which was not cooked and still pink inside. Restaurant is a hazard to people's health and the Manager is a rude pratt who could not care less. If he'd made my 2 year old son sick he would have known about it face to face. Food for collection was left on the counter once ready for collection and not a hot box. We came as soon as we were notified it was ready. We live very local. Food was cold when I opened. I called the shop to complain. Attitude of the staff I spoke to was disgusting. Basically said I was lying. No apology, no recompense. The guy said as soon as it's ready it's on the counter for collection. What if customers hit delays on their way. Any other Chinese locally put their customers food in a hot box behind the counter to keep warm. I don't appreciate paying £25 for substandard, cold food. Came here on a recommendation. Never again.

Honestly a joke. I ordered from here, got the food (which was tasteless & totally bland). I then got a phone call an hour later from an angry customer asking me where her order was. The restaurant clearly couldn’t be bothered to deal with an angry customer that had been waiting a while for their food and had passed on MY PERSONAL phone number AND NAME. I rang the restaurant and confronted them and they put the phone down on me. Absolutely disgusting, avoid at all costs.

The chicken balls are so greasy, same for the meat spring roll, when I picked them up my fingers were actually dripping with oil, the bag they came in was wet through with oil too, when I put them into my air fryer to remove some of the oils I was actually shocked at the pool of oil in the bottom of the machine, a good 4 or 5 table spoons came out 😫 then I put them on kitchen roll and there was still tons of oil soaking into the tissue 🤮 why so much oil rice box? On the plus side I will say they are reasonably priced and arrive in good timing its just the excessive use of oil that let them down 👎

I have been here a few times to get the beef brisket curry it is absolutely amazing I have never tasted such a nice curry . Myself and my partner ordered a delivery it arrived fresh and hot in just 10 minutes after ordering. Great service and amazing food best chinese curry in oxford .

Ordered 3 portions of squid, all of which was not fresh, tasted as if it was reheated, for £21 they thought it would be easy to just repeat portions that was there. Wont order from them again.

Just ordered a meal from rice box,when arrived there were 3 missing items,rang rice box,spoke to a lady first then she passed me onto the manager Patrick,who was adamant he added these items,I told him I'm looking at the order and it is definitely not there,he became really nasty in tone of voice told me I was a liar and slammed the phone down!!!@@ I rang back and spoke to the lady again,she said something in Chinese, when I asked to speak to manager,I heard him in the background,she said he'd gone out,I said I will call the police if they don't bring missing items,she said they will be sent within half an hour,which they were. The food was very low rate,nearly £30 with all this stress from the manager and items arriving late. DO NOT ORDER ANYTHING FROM RICE BOX Put one star because it wouldn't let me post otherwise,I give this place-5

Ordered twice from here via Deliveroo and each time had a great experience. Food was really tasty and hot, proper 'Dirty Chinese' take-away. Time it took to deliver was reasonable. Price was very fair for the portions. Highly recommend the Singapore Noodles, the Hong Kong style sweet & sour chicken, the shredded chili beef (dry) and the deep fried king prawns with garlic & pepper. Whole family could not get enough of this.

Quick service, good sized portions for the price. Ordered off the specials menu and it tasted as authentic as can get from a take-away.

Reasonable food at a good price.

Never have I ever been so disappointed in the quality of food delivered. The egg fried rice was bland, the garlic and pepper shredded beef was over-ally dry, the beef and mushroom curry was inedible and the beef chow mein was oily and unappetising. As I am well aware with every takeaway ordered there remains a risk that the food might not be up to restaurant standard. However, on ringing the restaurant to complain about the quality of the food delivered, we were rudely met with a response that showed no sympathy into correcting the situation. Instead the response that we were given was have we ever seen inside of a Chinese kitchen? There is no way that part of our meal could have been dry or oiley as it was all freshly cooked? As customers we weren’t doubting that the meal itself wasn’t freshly cooked we were just voicing our dissatisfaction in it and the service we had received. To pay over fifty pound on a meal for over thirty pound of it to be wasted is outrageous. Never again will I order from this restaurant not only for the quality of its food but the lack of compassion shown towards its customers.

Ordered food was told 30 to 40 mins wait. Waited for an hour phoned and food arrived further 15 mins late. Food arrived Cold and no cutlery, no napkins, they knew we were staying at primers Inn. didn't enjoy the food at all. I don't recommend this place.

Called the shop staff was incredibly rude over the phone they also lied and said that the food wasn’t cold and said that the delivery man come back at 8:45 when our food was delivered then. DISGUSTING! Collected for dinner for twice now and unbelievably, it is disgusting. We thought of giving it a second chance and now feeling sick after the meal. Got the following: Mini Vegetarian Spring Rolls (6) Crispy Aromatic Duck 1/4, Szechuan Chicken (absolutely DISGUSTING), Egg Fried Rice, King Prawn Fried Rice (uncooked flavorless peas and egg shells), Thai Style Chicken Chow. Except for the duck, everything was disgusting. Don't waste your money. Possibly the supermarket Chinese meal kits make a better meal.

We ordered a vegetarian cashew and mixed vegetable meal but found chicken in the meal. Tried to contact the restaurant multiple times but the line appears to be dead. Would not recommend eating here. Having now looked at their food hygiene rating listed on Just Eat, which is a 2/5, we should have known better

The flavor is not Asian alike. The food tastes quite bad. It's the one that western people will like but Asian people won't.

Their chicken has the texture of raw meat, it’s really really grim. I still feel very sick just thinking about it.
