I was unaware that the Pub was not actually open. Just the b and b. So instead of a lovely meal and drink in the Pub we stayed in which was my intention we had to get in the car and go out (moving the barrier across the car park to get out.) £105 outrageous price for 'Deluxe room'. which was basically a big room with a noisy fridge in it. Though it was very clean and comfortable. I received an email saying the pub was shut on the day I went on holiday to Cornwallm so didn't see it. Nowhere on there website does it say it's closed.

I was staying at a b&b in the village so thought I would give a try. We went on a Friday evening and it was quiet but as it was in August and a rural area maybe a lot of people were busy harvesting. The decor of the pub is very shabby. We had prawn cocktail, followed by fish and chips and then shared a ginger sponge. All was delicious and couldn't be faulted. The young man serving food was great.

We stayed for three nights and were very happy. Our room was bigger than we imagined and The River Piddle was just outside our window. The hosts were fabulous, the food and drinks were lovely and the locals were also friendly. We did two fairly long walks in the beautiful surrounding countryside which we found on the village website. If you fancy staying in a characterful Inn with gorgeous surroundings you can't go wrong.

I had booked a table here for my mum's 75th birthday. As we entered the bar a local was being asked to leave as he was drunk and he was shouty. We were ignored for ten minutes before we asked if we could be seated, I had to order drinks from bar as no one came to our table. Menu was minimal and 3 food items unavailable. A CD was playing loud in eating area, songs included The Thong Song and to my dismay a track which included a lady heavy breathing in an 'erotic' way.... 3 pudding options, apple crumble, sponge or icecream.

I always check the reviews of others when I have had a bad experience and in fairness the reviews are on the whole positive, but I don't think that any were for a Sunday. On arrival we were told only Sunday roasts were available either beef or Pork, fair enough quality over quantity I thought. Well what arrived is one of the worst meals I have ever seen on a plate, and when you think I have spent my life vetting hotels and restaurants all over the world for major company travel incentives that is some claim. The vegetables were ok but the Yorkshire pudding was under-cooked, the beef looked good but was a bit tough, not helped by blunt knives, but the roast potatoes had a burnt outer skin made of cardboard and a sliver of white potato in the middle all covered in a mass of salty gravy. To be fair when I said the potatoes were inedible they offered to pay for our round of drinks, What is unforgivable is the attitude of the person from the kitchen, who told me that when she had put them on the plate herself they were perfect and their had been no other complaints, by all of 4 other older people eating who probably wouldn't complain anyway. To add insult to injury was her dismissive body language when she went of in a huff, now that really was unforgivable. The good news is the waitresses were attentive and handle the complaint well and there is a branch of Specsavers in Dorchester.

Service was excellent and our waitress and landlady gave us a potted history of the pub. The food was fantastic. Hot, well served and excellent value for money. I would recommend the specials board. Our wine was simply lovely and all drinks served in sparkling glasses. The rooms looked lovely so I would feel confident in recommending a stay in the accommodation. We will definitely be returning.

A really interesting baguette with brie and cranberry. A poor and bland tuna sandwich. Wonderful, crispy chips. Very unadventurous and boring side salad. Abba very loud (you may or may not like this). Extremely quiet. Good and friendly service. So? A mixed review. At £22 including a glass of red wine and pint of excellent Piddle Ale, the value is also not bad. Would we go back? Probably. Are there better pubs for food in the area? Certainly.

We ordered cod, chips and mushy peas. My husbands fish was lovely and fresh. However my fish was tough to eat and had obviously been cooked twice. It was inedible. I had to leave most of it. The mushy peas had a crust on top and the chips were just about hot. To be fair we didn't complain (my husband hates complaining and would rather not go back) so they didn't get a chance to rectify it. I would have to rate my bacon and cheese sandwich as one of the best I've ever had, very fresh bread and lovely crispy bacon and a generous side salad. The side order of cheesy chips was huge and easily big enough for two. Great Irish music playing which is always a big plus point for me and friendly bar staff. Good food at a very reasonable price. Popped in here on the way back from an afternoon out and how I wish we hadn't bothered! It was half 5 in the afternoon so very quiet except for 3 very loud and extremely foul-mouthed men. They looked like construction workers (vans parked in car park) and had no problem with talking very loudly and using the F word in every sentence they uttered. It was very embarrassing and both my husband and I were thinking that they would see other patrons at the bar (us) and curb their foul mouths. No such luck! We found ourselves a place to sit as far away from them as possible but could still hear them. Neither of the bar staff seemed to even notice their language, even though I said in front of one of them 'nice language'. The men were late 20s, 40s and 50s so no excuse for such unpleasant behaviour. Having read through other reviews on here, I see this was not the first time recently that patrons have had to deal with foul-mouthed locals. We didn't stay for food so can't comment on that but tbh, the pub is stuck in a time warp with grim furniture and carpets. There are so many other lovely country pubs where a warm welcome is genuine and with a decent refurb, that I'd recommend driving right on by.

On a family holiday in beautiful Dorset. From the outside this old inn looks lovely and it is set right in the heart of the very pretty little village of Piddletrenthide. We booked ahead just to make sure but we need not have bothered as on the night the place was empty. When we pitched up as a family and said we had got a table booked one of the locals drinking in the bar openly laughed at us....not a good start. We were vaguely waved to a table, not shown, and then told all the things which were sold out of the menu that night. I suppose it was a Sunday in the middle of August and I expect they had been very busy but it was still early, 18.30, so no Fish and Chips or Sunday roast or even any Piddle beer was a bit of a blow. The Waitress was sweet and polite and kind but clearly not well informed about the ingredients of the dishes. We enquired about Gluten free and Dairy free and she went off to find out but we are not entirely convinced the information she came back with was correct. We made our choices and the food arrived very quickly!! It was just about edible. Very basic and not particularly appetising. My steak was leathery, chips were anaemic and my son and daughter in laws steak and ale pie was watery with an absolute overload of onions and whole peppercorns. My eldest son did enjoy his vegetarian bean dish and my grandaughter enjoyed her fish fingers and smiley faces although it would be very hard to mess that up. We did complain about the pie, my youngest son never leaves anything on his plate but couldnt face eating all his pie and chips. The poor little Waitress was very apologetic but it wasnt her fault. There was no sign of a manager. We paid and hastily left noticing the badly stained carpet as we went. The Waitress was standing in the front doorway having a cigarette as we exited, not exactly giving an overwhelming professional air to the place. She apologised again as we left, bless her.

Very good restaurant in a lovely old building, only downside was that it was a little noisy as many locals were quenching their thirst and shooting the breeze(certainly far from sedately) after a hard days work so it is necessary to get a seat at the far side of the dinning room if you are dinning early as we were. The fare was traditional but very tasty and the service was efficient and courteous. Those with not so hearty appetites might want to choose to from the array of tempting dessert instead of a starter as portions very generous.Caveat- don't go if you detest horses - wall decorations favour them.

Compared to many modern establishments, the decor and food is a little dated but it has everything of what I would expect of a local pub in a small village. The staff were friendly, the food was above average with decent portions. None of the group could find fault with any of the food. In fact, I think many felt there was too much! The best bit I believe was the simple pricing structure. From the main menu, all starters and deserts £5, all mains £10. Simple and easy to calculate and split, especially in a big group of you!

I'd reserved in advance but needn't have, there were only about 12 other customers there. The owner had a brisk manner from the start and we were repeatedly pestered to make our food choices which made us feel like a nuisance. When the food arrived it was all badly overcooked. My partner's Italian pasta bake was burnt on top and the pasta contained had dried out. The chicken breasts in the other 3 meals were all like rubber and impossible to chew like they were over microwaved. My parents ate what they could but I chose to send mine back as it was very unpleasant. They offered me a replacement meal which I declined because the idea was to eat together. The desserts are clearly bought in pre-packed, tiny and tasteless. We were all disappointed by the experience. Obviously I did not pay for the meal that was sent back and the owners did not charge for my sweet as a gesture. The bill was over £65 so I think they did pretty well really for bad service and bad food. Seriously there are so many other options people - just don't go there!!

We stayed at the Piddle Inn, and the accommodation was very good, but the restaurant just didn't reach the same standard. We were going to eat in the bar on the first night (we had a dog with us so couldn't take her into the restaurant) but with the TV on it just didn't have the country pub feel so we went down the road to Cerne Abbas. To be honest, the TV's (there were 2 in a fairly small area) seemed to be there for the benefit of the staff rather than the customers, except when the rugby was on when 2 people came in to watch. On the second night Mario kindly said that we could leave the dog in the room whilst we ate, so we tried the Friday night offer of a sirloin steak for £9.95. The presentation was poor, with chips, mushrooms and tomatoes but no peas, and the steak was not at all tender. At least mine was cooked OK, but my husbands was overcooked and very tough so we sent it back and didn't pay for it. The whole meal, from quality to the way it was presented, was very poor. It was a shame, as the restaurant itself is quite nice. It just lacks the professional touch - for example, tidy up the handwriting on the blackboards. On weekdays there is a happy hour and the place gets quite busy with locals but no-one seems to stay to eat - like us, they seemed to go up the road. The standard of the food would need to dramatically improve for the restaurant side to reach its potential. What a shame!

My wife & I, together with my step-father visited here recently, not knowing it had changed hands to what is now basically an Italian restaurant selling beer.Being an elderly gentleman who prefers to stick to good old UK meat and two veg type meals, my step-father was quite lost with the Italian menu, but I noticed there was steak & kidney pie available. I wasn't prepared to taste it as I cannot stand the taste of kidney, so can only accept what he said was valid in that: - "That was the worst tasting pie I have ever eaten!"I enjoyed my halibut, I must admit, but their downfall at this place came when they served my wife (a just recently retired chef in a four star hotel) a lasagne with at LEAST an inch of green mould growing on the top.My wife bitterly complained and apart from a cursory "I am so sorry, I'll tell the chef to get a new pair of glasses", she was offered no other form of compensation or apology. Whilst her replacement meal was OK , though in her own words , "It wasn't as good as my own lasagne, and in any event, the serving of the bright green carpet completely put me off my meal."AS we left, I told the owner that instead of telling the chef to get new glasses, he ought to go to Specsavers himself and get a new pair, seeing as he'd served the lasagne to my wife and hadn't apparently noticed what looked like a tennis court on top! I also made the comment that he ought to use his newly acquired glasses to find himself a new chef. After leaving The Piddle Inn, my wife advised me on the food quality checks that are standard in all decent food establishments, such as food rotation in freezers and temperature probing etc.She stated that it was obvious no such checks were being made at this place, because in order to get a growth of mould one inch high it would have taken at least a week. She's been in the catering industry since she left school in 1964 and finally retired last February as chef in a very high ranking hotel. She assured me that such things should not and could not happen if food rotation checks had correctly been carried out, and that it appeared the management of The Piddle Inn were simply not keeping tabs on the kitchen staff in order to ensure they were doing their daily checks.I was so disgusted that when we arrived back at my step-fathers flat, I personally telephoned the local Environmental Health Office who said they would arrange to make an unannounced visit and inspection. I've not yet heard back from them, but would sincerely recommend that no-one even THINKS of eating here unless they are assured that a new chef in in residence, and possibly, better still, new owners.Considering the old adage that "The book stops at the top", I doubt very much indeed if any of us would ever again visit "The Piddle" whilst these two Italians are still in charge. They obviously don't know how to control their kitchen staff.

Having waited in excess of half an hour to be served, my wife was brought a lasagne which was totally cold in the centre, an obvious health hazard. In a way it was fortunate that the meal was clearly cold, since luke warm reheated food would have posed a more difficult decision about whether to eat it. At that point we decided to leave rather wait further with no guarantee there would not be any other problems. At least the landlord accepted that we had a valid complaint and did not charge us for the two soft drinks we had consumed while waiting.

Outside was a sign saying that the restaurant was under new ownership, I don't know how long it has been there, but it now seems to be part Italian. I decided on the Tagliatelli and I wasn't disappointed. A lovely creamy sauce with mushrooms and bacon.

Enticed by beautiful, unseasonal spring weather, we met friends at this lovely country pub. Drinks in the picturesque small garden, alongside the River Piddle, followed by lunch in the bar/restaurant, featuring locally sourced produce, well-prepared and presented, and served by pleasant and accommodating staff. First class... Sadly the landlord/landlady are moving on shortly, but it is to be hoped that the new tenants will maintain the standards.

My colleagues and I (10 of us in total) stopped here for lunch midweek on the way through Dorset. We booked ahead and they had set up a table for us in the pub - however as it was a nice day we asked if we could sit outside and they said no problem. The outside area is fairly small but it is quiet and the river is just next to it (as others have said more a stream!)The waiter was excellent and attentive - one of our party was vegetarian and had little choice on the main menu but the waiter spoke to the chef and sorted out a meal for her which she said was delicious. We ordered a variety of food - portions were huge and it was really tasty too. We didn't spend too long inside the actual Inn as the weather was good but what we did see was clean and in good order.

We stayed at the Piddle Inn in March. It has great accommodation - a very peaceful setting, with stunning views from the bedroom. The room was very spacious, really nicely decorated and clean. Breakfast was beautifully cooked and served by a friendly waitress - there was a good choice. Most of the food is cooked from local produce - which is really nice and comes accross in the cooking as everything is fresh and seasonal. Our evening meal was really good. An excellent fish blackboard menu accompanies a wide selection of other dishes. Our food was homemade, using fresh ingredients and the pub staff were exceptionally friendly and accommodating. I had local scallops - cooked beautifully and my husband had pigeon - great flavours. Would recommend for a great weekend break.

Ate at the Piddle Inn twice on our recent stay at the Poachers Inn Piddletrenthide. At the Piddle Inn we experienced wonderful food and a friendly welcome. A variety of wonderful fresh fish and locally sourced meat dishes were available as well as delicious deserts.I can fully recommend the Seabass, Fillet steak, and Chocolate torte.I wish we had found this place earlier rather than having our anniversary dinner at the Poachers Inn where there just didn't seem to be any atmosphere.
