Truly exceptional food and service. We visited for Sunday lunch, which at £38 for three courses (which includes free admission to the village - normally £19) is exceptionally good value for money for food of this calibre. This is richly deserving of a Michelin Star.

MORE AT TripAdvisor

We were staying for the night, on the dinner/breakfast deal. Disappointed at the restricted menu, given there had been far more expansive versions on their website. The first thing to arrive was bread - a rustic brown, and a focaccia. The focaccia was completely inedible. I am a salt fiend (blame my parents!) but I nearly choked on the first bite. It was if the "cook" had knocked a full bag of salt into the mix without noticing. I would dearly love to watch whoever made this, actually eat it. I warned my (zero salt eating) partner to avoid it at all costs. A palate cleanser was required at this point, but the wine hadn't yet arrived. A ghastly start. The staff were the most miserable, non-engaging crew I've ever come across. One in particular. On the next table was the sweetest elderly Welsh couple ever, all dressed up for what was probably an occasion for them. They both had the halibut. The lady took one bite, and said to hubby that both fish and sauce were cold. His was also, so they called over a waitress. She said nothing, walked off and fetched an older guy who just grunted, scowled, and took the plates away. The husband kept apologising for being a nuisance - not one solitary word of apology came the other way. A moment later, and the server was a short way away speaking to a colleague. He nodded in the direction of the couple, and saying clearly "they said it was cold - it wasn't" at a volume that could be heard by everyone (it's near silent in there, with the atmosphere of a morgue). Eventually, 2 new plates arrived, plonked on their table without a single comment, and again, husband was apologising profusely. My blood was boiling - I really wanted to intervene, but knew it was none of my business. All I can say is - grey haired man with a paunch, you need to get a job as a revenue protection officer for the railways. Waiting is NOT your vocation. You were very lucky it was they, not us, who were subject to your treatment as we'd have gone ballistic. The food was OK. Nothing outstanding at all. Breakfast was a much cheerier experience. Mr Sullen was still on duty, but the manager guy was pleasant and wise cracking. The Eggs Arnold Bennett were delicious. I related our dinner experience at check-out. The guy apologised, but I just knew nothing would be fed back.

We tend to have Sunday lunch at the hotel every month. This time we booked a table at 12:45. First of all, we were not given a choice of bread, we were given a salty slice of brown bread; no one came to ask if we wanted more drinks. The food was of poor quality apart from the lamb. The roast potatoes were hard, the cauliflower cheese was burnt. They tend to give to kinds of potatoes and very little vegetables. My wife had pate without any bread and it had a disgusting taste. We had to wait until just before 2 pm to have the main course. People who had arrived after us were served quicker. When I asked to speak to the manager; this young woman who does not have any communication skills, I could hardly hear what she said, was not interested in our concern. She did not take care of my complaint and in fact, she ignored us when we were about to leave. We wasted £85 and left feeling disappointed and cheated, as my wife said. Terrible in every sense. Some manager called John Mundy replied to my complaint by giving the usual palaver of how they listen, etc. without actually acknowledging our bad experience. Never again.

Ate in the restaurant both nights when we were staying in the hotel.started with an excellent cocktail menu, my Margarita was superb. Dining room is beautiful windows all the way around giving lovely views of the estuary. Menu is small, 4 starters, 4 mains and 4 desserts. But each dish is fully explained, over our 2 night stay we ate 8 different dishes for our starters and main, every one was outstanding, the very finest quality ingredients , imaginatively cooked and beautifully presented. The breakfasts were also amazing and so much choice. All our servers were fantastic- friendly, informative and professional. A wonderful weekend of fabulous gourmet eating

We did not stay in the hotel but had an evening meal on a Friday at 8.15pm . What a disappointment. We were made to wait until 8.30pm before being seated despite other people being seated on time. The restaurant itself was lite up like Blackpool white bright lights with no ambience more like the cafe culture. The table had no condiments, which, even with the best chefs in the world you should be given the choice I was given a dessert spoon for my soup it was just going from bad to worse. There was also no music in the background so again lacked atmosphere and ambience, and looking at the history of the building, some Glenn Miller would not of gone a miss. The food was okay, but portions were far too small even for me and I only eat small portions. I can only say people liking this atmosphere, the lack of ambience and to be charged way too much for such Then you have Not travelled far in the world. Needless to say, I cannot recommend this restaurant and I will not be going back.

I booked Sunday lunch at the hotel ,as last time we visited we couldn't go in due to a private function and had heard the food was good. . We were expecting it to be nice but the whole experience far far exceeded our expectation. Food was specacular. It was a very windy wet September 24th .Sunday . We arrived early intending to have good walk but was so windy and wet after a short walk we went to the hotel early hoping for shelter and a coffee with a warm seat to enjoy the view before our lunch 2.15 . We were so suprisedcatcthe easy warm welcome A young chap said our table was free but was happy for us to relax for a while before our lunch and come in when ready. A very talented harpist played beautiful music in the bar reception area. The place was a warm oasis of calm on the very stormy day. It was magical. We were so pleased with the hotels beautiful decor and amazing views Every staff member had a warm welcoming smile and professional manner. We had coffee in the lounge warmed up basquing in the relaxed beauty of the lounge. We went into dinner at 2ish and had a window table for 2. Our Sunday lunch was delicious. Really was one of the best Sunday lunches ever. Alex had the roast beef, perfectly pink and I had cauliflower soufle together with roast potatoes carrots broccoli and the most unxious rich and creamy cauliflower cheese I have ever tasted. Absolutely to die for. we had an attentive young lady waitress red hair ,big smile who kindly obtained the recipe for me. THANKYOU. We were so stuffed we decided to get our cheese and biscuits boxed up and have another drink in the lovely lounge. We enjoyed nice coffee and our cheese duly arrived boxed neatly. All of the staff who welcomed us, the chap who showed us to our table , young lady with dark hair and glasses , the young lady with red hair , young lady from Newport without fail were all very warm welcoming ,professional and engaged with us making the Sunday lunch so special. We will definitely return. Thankyou all staff for a wonderful afternoon.

Worst Sunday lunch in a long time.Starters were the consistency of baby food. Congealed tasteless gravy;veg had obviously been stood under heat lamp for significant time and Yorks Pud like old leather. Chewy beef. Servers cloth dipped in gravy on one diners plate with response being “it’s a clean cloth”. One of our party had fish - no fish knife or plate offered to put bones on,let alone being asked if boning was needed. We asked for service charge to be taken off, which it was. Would have asked for full refund but booked as special treat and didn’t want party to be further upset. Only decent thing was the excellent harpist and welcoming receptionist.

Had dinner here one evening whilst staying in the cottages in Portmeirion Village. The service was professional and friendly, and the food was excellent. This is a lovely setting in a hotel which retains much of its original character.

Called in for coffee and cakes. Took ages to be served but staff were pleasant. We sat upstairs and appreciated the heating being on as it was a cold day. The coffee was weak and we only drank it to warm us up. My dad’s iced bun was more like a rock cake. The bara brith we bought to take home was the worst we’ve ever had. Completely dry and tasteless. Best thing about this place was the clean loo. Would not return.

A wonderful find - such a great restaurant! The menu is small but wow; the choices are fantastic. The coconut chicken was perfect, roast potatoes were delicious and the beautifully cooked. As a coeliac and dairy intolerant - would definitely recommend.
