Really friendly and helpful staff - we were very late arriving (we did ring ahead) as we were unable to find the walking path descending off the Edge to get to the pub so had to double back. They were so helpful on the phone, trying to guide us. And they still had a table for us. Lunch was delicious - Roast beef lunch was excellent. Will definitely return here when next in the area.

Delightful find, a cosy upmarket pub with low level background music. We only stopped here for drinks on a walk but we were made very welcome by the staff. Considering a stay here at some time. Menu looked very nice indeed. No dogs! What a bonus these days.

Had four nights at the Chequers and very pleased that we chose this place for our short break. Everything about the Chequers could not be faulted. The place was spotlessly clean. The accommodation was spot on could recommend Room 1. All evening meals were taken at the Inn and the food was top class. All members of staff were pleasant and helpful. Would not hesitate in recommending this inn to friends and family. Bryan and Sylvia Sams.

This is shabby chic, with less emphasis on the chic. We stayed for one night and had dinner. The stair carpet is disgusting, as is the bannister at the top of the stairs, heavy with grease of a thousands of hands. The place is tired and old fashioned and needs decorating and updating. The food was actually better than average pub-grub, and whilst service was good, the staff were very pleasant but had no idea of the items on the menu. The breakfast was actually very good indeed. It suited our requirements, but I wouldn't make a special journey to stay or dine here. It needs a refurbishment.

We were staying in Froggat with our two grandsons (2 and 4) so had lunch here while waiting to get into our accommodation. It was a great choice of menu and the food was excellent. Very patient with the boys who loved the animal pictures. Returned for a late Sunday lunch and again excellent food the veg (always difficult) was fantastic. I would recommend this place for a really good place to stop in the Peak District a very warm welcome.

We stayed 3 nights B&B and also had dinner here twice. The restaurant is very popular and you'll need to book. We've been here several times before and the food is consistently excellent. Prices are quite high - £29.90 for Rib Eye Steak for example - but the food is very good, there's a great pub ambience and service is great too. Breakfasts for residents were very nice too and are covered in my review of the Inn in the Hotel section.

Normally, the food can't be faulted. But today for some reason it wasn't the same, the pie was that hard, i had to leave it, it took ages for me to actually cut into the pie (I had to use a lot of force and was scared it would go everywhere) We have been here quite a lot over the years, so hopefully it'll just be a blip.

What a great location for walkers doing the Froggatt circular loop. Had a frothy pint, sat in the lovely garden and had sunshine as well. We booked for an early evening meal at The Chequers. It was quite a grim night on our way there, rain, drizzle and quite thick fog patches in places. There had been snow the day before, but it had turned warmer and rained, so the roads were very wet. However, it was a lovely warm welcome inside. It wasn’t too busy at first, but the bar soon filled up with most of the tables being full, with people eating or just having drinks around the fire. It did have quite a good atmosphere. The service we received from the two ladies in the bar was really welcoming and efficient, and our order was taken quickly. The food did take a little while to arrive, which is understandable. Everything appeared to be freshly cooked, and we could tell it hadn’t just been warmed up. We had opted for steak pie, which was lovely - good pastry and lovely rich gravy, flavoured with Hendersons Relish. The vegetables accompanying the meal were well cooked - tasty and with a nice texture. The chips were good too. Following our mains, we decided on a couple of sticky toffee puddings and an ice cream. All in all, a good evening, and even the journey home was better.

Pub in a lovely location but disappointing interior, ambience just wasn’t right , tables in lines then 4 easy chairs near the fire making it feel a bit uncomfortable if only having a drink. Most annoying bar tender trying too hard made you feel a bit awkward. Wine was good but spoiled by being served in a gin glass , never had this before drinks should be served in the appropriate glass . Overall the pub felt very tired and could be so much better , such a shame.

Visited the Chequers for dinner on Saturday evening, The service is very slow indeed, even though the pub was less than half full. After a long wait 1 hour ,i asked how long till we would be served the landlord became very defensive saying we are very busy and everything is cooked to order and the steak has to sit 25 mins ,very patronising,my wife is an outstanding cook. The steak when it arrived was undercooked for a medium rare and definately not worth £29.00 gbp. My wife asked for an itemised receipt and when we got home realised we had been overcharged for her wine, Staff ,inexperienced with no customer care skills. The posters in the gents toilets tell you all you need to know about the landlords view of customers,we are happy to see some customers when they arrive ,........... and some when they leave. Say no more we wont be returning, very expensive ,slow service average food. Buyer beware

It was my seventieth birthday and I wanted to go somewhere special for a family Sunday lunch. Though I had driven by "The Chequers Inn" a thousand times I had never ventured inside and recent reviews were encouraging. The lunch was excellent . We had tasty starters before the main course - all of us choosing roast beef which was slightly pink, thinly sliced and tender. When I went to the bar to pay the bill the landlord asked if everything had been all right and I was happy to report that every element had been delicious - from the creamy cauliflower cheese to the homemade Yorkshire puddings and the gravy. It was the best Sunday lunch I have had in ages and my family agreed. One suggestion I would make regarding small children - why not buy in a couple of high chairs? My two and a half year old granddaughter had to be propped up with cushions.

Booked a table for six for my daughter-in-law's birthday. We took a small birthday cake which received a very cold welcome from the staff. It was allowed out at the end of the meal but reluctantly and with no knive or plates; obviously, it had to be taken away uneaten! The meal itself was well over £200, was very average and, I have to say, overpriced, but it was the attitude of the staff (particularly one waitress, clearly in the wrong job) which spoilt the evening for us. We live locally and I would have thought in the current economic climate local custom would be vital. Needless to say, we will take it elsewhere.

Sorry to see the Chequers management are still in denial about customers complaints which are plentiful. They have a particularly combative style which is apparent to customers who dare to complain. It is however the customers prerogative to complain either on the evening or afterwards if the meal or eating experience generally is not up to standard. Hopefully one day soon the establishment will change hands, when we would return again after our poor experience of the Chequers in the recent past.

My husband and I visited on Monday the 30th Dec at teatime, found a very quiet lovely country inn. We had good memories from our last visit about ten years ago. The staff were professional and very pleasant and were only both pretty young. My husband had the steak and ale pie which he described as fabulous and was well worth the £15 price. I however was a little disappointed at what I perceived to be a limited menu certainly not sufficient choice for my taste buds. A burger in a bun with non edible salad due to the mustard poured over it,with the obligatory tub of skinny fries which could have come from macdonnalds. The burger itself was a little bland, just lacking in seasoning so at £16 I left somewhat let down. We would return again and probably both have the pie. Hopefully a little more to chose from next time! I don't need a reply

We have eaten her several times and have always praised the food, service and ambiance, so when we heard they were hosting a game week menu we just had to check it out.As usual the service was excellent, however this time we found found some elements of the meal disappointing. the the ladies didn't go for the game menu, opting for the sea bass instead, slightly overcooked and the meal came swimming in a sauce that overpowered the fish, the vegetables were too hard to get your fork into, so they were disappointed. two of us had the game selection, starters were very good, but the mains were ok slightly overcooked and again the vegetables were inedible. We were also disappointed with the wine selection for the game, such a menu commanded a greater selection of robust French full bodied reds, but unfortunately their wine menu was very lacking and we had to make do with rather thin medium bodied red wine. So overall for an ex dining pub of the year with the Good Pub Guide, this meal was not up to their usual standard.

We have been here a cape of times, with friends and family over the past month or so, so I thought it was time I caught up with my reviews and submitted one for the restaurant. We have eaten both off the rosette menu and the regular menu, and even had the Sunday lunch. All f the food is imaginatively put together, the chef obviously knows his business, and it is nice to get something other than the run of the mill Sunday roast and pub fare. The prices are reasonable and even the wines, although daily expensive, offer a range of prices and varieties that you can find fair value. Sadly what lets the place down, and this is pretty common in the area, is the staff trying levels. The staff are lovely and friendly but they do not know the menu and have to constantly leave you to ask someone when you ask for further information, such as 'what ice cream do you have?' this lack of knowledge means they do not 'sell up' and it is a shame as the place could be so much better, I understand how difficult it is to get staff in remote places, but this could be rectified. That said we have returned to the restaurant a few times and would probably go back again.

In his reply he grossly exaggerated what happened concerning my remarks to his staff. He has admitted the soup was too hot and some items were left off the plate. When you visit a 2 AA Rosette restaurant you expect good food, good service and well trained staff. For many I am sure this is the case at The Chequers, but for us it was not. This is a lovely traditional pub setting with really well presented gastro style food and an interesting (if not slightly pretentious) menu. However, we found the flavours could have been stronger, lacked in seasoning and the portion sizes are frankly quite small for the relatively pricy menu (which by means of feedback to the proprietor left us feeling let down and disappointed - that’s how we felt and sorry if you take exception to that. These comments are meant as constructive feedback that you don’t need to defend). The main dishes were fine but very little in terms of side vegetables although what there was of the sides was nice. In summary more style than substance. The image is traditional pub yet the pricing is upmarket, contemporary style food that somehow does not match or seem to work. . The menu is not what you expect when you walk into the setting. The pricing would be perfectly acceptable if there was more on the plate which might help repeat business? Perhaps run it alongside a more traditional menu to increase the customer base? We left still feeling hungry.

Don't always visit restaurants where we have not been before or had feedback - however on entering the pub/restaurant the ambiance and atmosphere made us feel in safe hands. Not that busy like a couple of places we had passed on the pleasant winters day between Christmas and New Year however. The menu was reasonably inviting and the lady who seemed in charge friendly at this stage. We chose pork steak black pudding and seasonal vegetables without the black pudding. Priced at about £16. When it arrived it was a massive doorstep of a pork steak huge with a couple of tablespoons full of tenderstem broccoli and petit pois. We waited for a small bowl of maybe new potatoes / extra veg???? The waitress came and asked if ok and i asked if any potatoes or anything and was told no. I asked if they could take my plate back and add a few chips or new potatoes as the thought of eating such a massive chunk of pork with little else made me feel nauseous. They took it away and added nearly half a dozen chips (lovely chips I might add). The lady in authority came to ask if everything was ok and I said it was alright. ' Alright?' she challenged. I said I expected seasonal vegetables to include maybe potatoes as I couldn't possibly eat such a chunk of pork with little else. She said there were side orders . I felt when ordering this should have been offered as I expected seasonal vegetables to include this at £16. I felt she had very challenging manner but I did not rise to this as just decided we would not come again. As host she could have been friendly and made our experience better but she chose not to. I couldn't possibly eat this huge chunk of pork unaccompanied without being sick and wrapped it up for Molly my Border Collie who was in the car. My husband ate it and said he felt like there was a brick in his tummy. To sum up ....not all diners want a plate with little else but meat....seasonal vegetables at most restaurants is enough to complement the meal....if new potatoes or chips should have been ordered it could have been pointed out when ordering. I WILL NOT BE ABLE TO EAT PORK AGAIN !!!!!!!!

So disappointed. Expected more for £145 per night (including breakfast) WiFi is also woeful. Booked here for 3 uncomfortable nights. Owner conveniently on holiday. No refunds policy on booking so, won't be spending any more cash on meals or drinks here. I would be surprised is this place is still in business in 18 months.

We ate from the delicious rosette menu. Very tasty and well presented although our friend commented on the small starter portion!

We really enjoyed our meal. The food was nicely presented and of excellent quality. The pub and gardens were nicely kept. The restaurant/bar was not particularly busy and seemed to cater more for hotel residents rather than casual diners. Whilst there were no particular issues, the staff could benefit from being more welcoming and engaging.

Beautiful food. Great selection. I had for starters smoked salmon and horseradish pannacotta with salad and it was a melt in the mouth sensation. Followed by 'proper ' steak n ale pie and veg. Very tasty and imaginative it was a real gem to find such quality food. Fully stocked bar with a variety of traditional ales and spirits

On a visit to the area, we enjoyed Sunday lunch here. The standard of the food was surprising given the roadside setting. Attentive service and an excellent selection of local draft beers complimented the food. Sirloin of beef and roast pork were well cooked and presented with all the trimmings. Good selection and starters and deserts available to complete the meal.

I glanced at the reviews and saw that this pub had a high excellence rating. However, after visiting, I can only think that people are either easily conned or there was a different menu or a different chef that evening. I would refer you to the review about 4 weeks ago and that was the closest description to our experience in this establishment.

Called in on a return visit to Manchester for a hospital appointment. We have called a few times in the past and always had great service and food. As usual we revived a warm welcome, the barmaid brought our drinks over to the table. I chose Duck and my wife chose the steak pie. The waitress gave us complimentary bread with oil and balsamic vinegar. The main course arrived soon after. The duck was perfection! Nicely smoked and served with assorted dressings and accompanying garnishes. If the chief had not already got a Michelin star then he deserves one for that dish alone ( not to mention the side order of fries with beef salt..)! My wife enjoyed her pie and mash. The meat was lean, nicely seasoned and the pastry was beautiful. This is not the usual cheap pub food but is a gastronomic treasure chest. Nice staff and unique food. Can’t wait to return. X

We dined here on Saturday evening with friends and the whole experience was amazing. The food and service was to a very high standard and the staff so friendly and I can certainly see why they have two well deserved AA rosettes.

Not the first time we've been disappointed with The Chequers. Over priced but average cooking and indifferent staff, Three of us had the steak pies all hard and small, one the rack of lamb kleftico which consisted of two tough "lollipop" chops and a half handful of greek salad for £18 - really, come on !! We pointed this out to the waitress who only made excuses that the rack was in fact in the kitchen and the person we paid ignored the situation !!! The beer was good but at over £4 a pint it should be. There are far better places to eat nearby.

Absolutely spot on. A friendly welcome, plenty of excellent drinks (the local Derbyshire Gin is highly recommended)and a comfortable table in the corner.

We attended for the 4 th Mother’s day lunch here . We were presented with a three course set menu for £30 each. On booking we were not informed of this and had expected the usual bar menu. None of us wanted that much food or to pay that much. This we could have coped with but the attitude of the man at the bar was appalling, making us feel very uncomfortable and ruining a nice day. He was rude and blamed us for not asking what would be on the menu when booking, why would we do this ?? I wouldn’t normally ask what was on a menu a week before via phone!!

We are staying in Froggatt for a few nights rest & relaxation to get away from our frenetic lives in the busy South East. We decided to book The Chequers for dinner before leaving home as it was the most local pub to where we are staying.

So we have a "traditional" country pub with laid out in classic pucbs style. Lots of small tables with stuff to look at. The menu in not long but every dish is something unusual. You can choose from the "Pub" list or the main list. Don'y come here if you want to pig out on quantity, come here for a gastronomic experience. Service is prompt and food delivered to tables in a reasonble time, givin you time to have a conversation.

Visited tonight to eat, having not eaten here for a few years. I really like the ambience - have been for drinks only a few times over the last year or two. I took two friends visiting the area for a meal. I have to say it was exceptional. The quality was excellent. My Shin of Beef starter and Hake main course were lovely. Excellent vegetables with the main. The presentation was very good. Superb value too. A beer each, a bottle of wine and starters plus mains for the three of us was just over £100. Will return.

We had sentimental reasons for returning to the Chequers Inn and weren’t disappointed. There were 7 in our party and we were looked after well. Once we had ordered it took a while for the meals to arrive but I think this is a reflection on the freshly cooked food and how busy the restaurant was. A good sign in itself! A couple of us noticed an over enthusiastic use of salt in the mains but overall the food was very good. Everyone enjoyed their desserts too. Would recommend if you are in the area.

We had a very pleasant lunch here. Food was tasty and very well presented. Not too long a wait. Shame they had run out of the bread and butter pudding! The staff were nice, and it was comfortable. We had a long relaxing lunch after a couple of hours walking.

This restaurant was chosen by friends who were travelling to meet us as we were staying in the area. Neither of us had been before. Our table was set in the bar area, others had just finished eating and some were just arriving. I chose the Sunday roast loin of pork and everyone else the steak and ale pies. I'm told these were absolutely delicious. My roast meal was lovely. Personally I could have done with a couple more roasties - having turned down the seasonal vegetables! There were clean plates all round and although there was a wait for our food, it shows it was all prepared to order and gave us time to enjoy the local beers and to catch up with old friends. It was the perfect choice for us and although at the higher end of the price range for your regular pies and roast dinners, it goes to show that you get what you pay for - in this case, lovely tasty meals. The service at the bar was good, very professional service all round. Thankyou.

Has provided consistently high quality food for many years. Nice pub interior, good selection of well kept real ales. Excellent scallops (3) as starter followed by venison and breaded quails egg plus salad and fries. Varied standard menu with cheaper meals and interesting but more expensive specials menu. Tend to compare with Cambridgeshire prices( generally expensive) This is similar prices to our high end pubs but more expensive than the normal price in derbyshire but ii is very good.

Really poor. Save your money and go down the road 5 mins to the Old Smithy Beeley for your moneys worth, time and quality. £13.50 for a full english breakfast which was nothing better than being in a Wetherspoons. Portion side is horrendous and coffee was disgusting. Both taste and how it was made. Looks lovely and welcoming both inside and out so a real shame really. Expect better
