We visited this restaurant as a party of 12 to celebrate a 60th birthday, apart from a child aged 4 the rest of the table were adults. Julie, the owner, went out of her way to make us and the 4 Yr old very welcome. The whole experience was marred by some other diners (women) who were making comments about us being 'rough' and tutting that we were making to much noise when the 4yr old was laughing. Lovely pub but horrible clientele

Julie is a warm and welcoming host and nothing was too much trouble. Good draft beer and excellent breakfasts. We stayed 2 nights to walk the Dragon’s Back and explore the stunning area. Do drop in after you have parked in the pub owned car park at the foot of the walk.

Ideal location for book festivals in town and for those who want to explore the footpaths. You could not ask for better hosts ! So kind and helpful. The food is amazing. Great choice of home cooked meals for all. There are 2 large car parks, so for those who would like to walk the footpaths you can park and go back to Dinas Castle Inn for your meal, drinks, coffee, cake. You can book a room to stay over. Our room was clean and looked out onto the hills at the back. The owners are the best hosts of anywhere we have stayed, We have never met proprietors so warm and welcoming as Ray and Julie. They are new to Dinas Castle Inn and they have a long term plan which sounds fantastic. On a constructive note, please stop and call into Castle Inn. As we were not sure if they were open when we arrived. You will not be disappointed !

My colleague and I stayed with Julie and Ray while supervising a DofE expedition. They couldn’t have been more helpful in arranging the accommodation and making sure we had everything we needed. The room was really comfortable with a great hot shower which was much needed after a day in the hills. The view in the morning, over the beautiful black mountains was stunning. The Inn is superbly located at the bottom of the Dragon’s back with ample parking and is very dog friendly. We spent two evenings in the pub, eating really good hearty meals and chatting with the friendly locals and the owners. We felt really welcome and it was nice to see solo hikers/bikers and campers and I would definitely return to stay on my own without hesitation. Breakfast was delicious and set us up for a good days hill walking. The inn also provides coffees and teas and refreshments throughout the day. We really enjoyed our stay here, and will be back soon on our next trip where we will enjoy the comfortable cosy surroundings with log fires and good food. Thanks for Julie and Ray for the stay.

The weekend was supposed to be all about walking, but the highlight was the bar! Julie and Ray are brilliant hosts, they’ve got a job on to get the place looking how they want it, but the service, food and hospitality are all top notch. It couldn’t be easier to strike out on amazing walks which all seem to start from the car park, and you don’t need to go anywhere else afterwards as the Inn has great food(the steaks are lovely), great beer and a really nice atmosphere. The breakfasts really set you up for a good walk too. Will definitely be back.

My husband and I stayed for one night - and wish it had been for longer! Great hosts for whom nothing was too much trouble. Our room had fabulous views and an very comfortable bed. The food was excellent - locally sourced where possible - and portions so generous we couldn’t mange to eat everything at dinner. We will be back!

We called in after walking in the hills to have Sunday lunch. Such a friendly welcome. Warm and cosy with the woodburner burning away on a wet day! The menu is honest straightforward pub food and the portions are really generous, and everything freshly cooked. You won’t be disappointed if you give them a try. Beautiful area if you are walking or biking. We weren’t staying but people that were in the pub who were, they thought it was a fabulous find too. Our dog was made very welcome too. Come and visit these lovely folk who have not long taken over the place and are working hard to make it a great place to stop. Thank you

Booked as a stag group of 12 making use of the largest bunkhouse for 2 nights, which was clean and affordable with decent showers. Breakfast was great. The pub has a fantastic atmosphere, good beer, and decent food which was absolutely ideal for us to settle in for each evening between activities. Owners Julie and Ray could not have been more accommodating, didn’t charge us for an unused room we’d booked when some couldn’t make it last minute and are just all round great! If you’re looking for a comfortable and hassle free base to explore the area, look no further. I wish them all the best, they’re onto a winning formula!

Arriving on a dark, wet and windy Thursday evening and looking for a wild camping spot in our motorhome for the night we arrived from the direction of Crickhowell in an empty and rather large car park. We had a quick scout around and saw that there was a sign or two saying £2 to park. I will admit we did not see the 'no overnight parking' text as it was very dark, however, we only ever leave footprints, wheel tracks, and take memories and usually other people's litter with us! We saw the honesty box and we were happy to have paid someone but as I said we arrived in the dark. There were no telephone numbers on the signs nor web addresses and we did not know that the car park was owned by the Dragons Back facility. One sign said PLEASE PAY HERE and threatened you with a reminder that a sticker will be put on your windscreen that is difficult to remove if you do not pay. You cannot write an 'excuse' on a handwritten note as they will ignore it. That's what the sign says!! All a bit scary. I wish we had just left and found somewhere nicer but my partner said he'd been there before and had stayed and paid £10. We parked up cooked a meal and thought it would be ok but a tremendous banging occurred on our motorhome. It frightened me. What we were then met with was a shouting, angry and loud man telling us to get off, get lost, get off the car park etc, "I don't want you here!" is what he shouted. He was absolutely fuming and almost deranged with anger. Well, we had cooked a roast dinner by then and had drunk a couple of glasses of wine so we couldn't drive. We apologised. We were not blocking anyone we were not taking any spaces and we left early the next day. He could have been nicer in his approach. He was happy to take our money and he had no choice but to let us stay really in the end. I will never ever go to his pub, nor his car park and this review serves as a warning to anyone who dare break his rules. I have since found a really fab app showing wild camping spots (of which there are many in Wales) We went on to enjoy 3 days in Wales but not from this location.

We had a lovely stay at the Dragons Back. The Landlord gave us a bigger room as they had a cancellation. Plenty of space in the bunkhouse with two showers and toilets plus access to kitchen facilities. Very clean and comfortable beds. We forgot our tea, coffee and milk but the landlord provided some for us. Plenty of choice of evening meal. Very tasty and quick service. Overall a very friendly, clean, comfortable place to stay in the Black Mountains with walks from the doorstep.

So pleased we found this place! Really good value for money. Welcoming owners, clean and comfortable room, good food, lovely views and surrounding countryside. We’d traveled to Wales for the annual Man vs Horse race, although we were still 45 minutes away, but it was just the ticket. When we came back tired and depleted, there was a hot shower to be had, followed by beer and sizzling steaks (wine and a tasty veggie shepherds pie for our veggie team-mate) in front of the wood burning stove to build us back up. Lovely cooked breakfast too!

Came here for dinner with my husband and was told straight away there was a little wait for food which was fine. I’d much rather know from the off! Had a drink while we waited. The menu is on single chalk boards above the bar so if they run out of something, they remove that board... simples!! No false expectations. Food was great. Simple, filling and very generous portions. Hubby had Burger and Chips and I had Cottage Pie.... he got half of mine!!!! Will come back here if ever i’m back this way.

We were staying in Hay and Drover offer the only charger for electric vehicles in the town (and it's free). They were generous with their suggestions of using it overnight. They sell maps for local road and MTB rides too, so after we'd been out on one, we stopped by for a coffee and cake. They sell energy bars and gels too, if you're stocking up before or during a ride. A very friendly team!

Lovely local server. I had the vegetarian curry, which was (surprisingly) brilliant! Homemade, and tasted fresh and well-balanced spices- unusual for a vegetarian meal. Husband had ham, egg and chips. Chips were crispy, and ham was a generous portion, tasty and thick-cut. 😋 2 slices of ham, and 2 eggs. Great 👍

Stayed with my daughter for a couple of nights before the school term restarts. Room was spotlessly clean and had everything we needed. Very quiet with a gorgeous view of the Welsh countryside. Breakfast was lovely and filling. A real shame they don't do evening meals as it meant we ended up with takeaways in the car as I wasn't sure if we'd be allowed to bring in hot food. That aside, we enjoyed our stay and would not hesitate to book again.
