I've stayed and eaten at this pub many times, I've spent many evenings in the carriage which is now a fantastic outside dinning area, over the years I've been served by some fantastic staff, dawn, Richard, Jamie, Tracey, donner name a few.. but I will not be returning until new owners take on this beautiful establishment, the food has gone down in my opinion, the staff are either kids or older staff who have no time for their customers, my previous visit was not good, but i thought I'd give it one my try, the last one... Poor poor poor

We recently visited The Anglers Arms whilst passing through the area and unfortunately, our experience was disappointing. Upon arrival, it seemed oddly quiet for a Friday evening and as a result it lacked any atmosphere. The food didn’t live up to our expectations either. The Risotto in particular was very mushy with a strange taste and texture which was frustrating giving the price (£20). Service was okay and the staff were friendly, but not enough to redeem the overall experience. While the reviews were so promising the meal fell flat and our experience did not add up. We hope they improve in the future, but for now, we can’t recommend it.

Visited for Sunday lunch and was hugely impressed. It’s located in a gorgeous pocket of Northumberland and looked very pretty in all the autumnal colours. We arrived slightly earlier than our booking but they happily accommodated us. We were quickly shown to our table and our drinks order taken whilst we browsed the menu. I opted for a roast chicken dinner and it was delicious. The meat was cooked perfectly and the accompanying veg all complimented it so well. I had to splurge on the extra cauli-cheese dish as it’s a personal favourite and I am so pleased I did, it was one of the best I have had, so creamy and extra cheesy, perfect! The staff were all really attentive and friendly and made our time there very pleasant. Without doubt, one of the best roasts we have had in a while 😊

Had many fantastic meals here over the years, my lunch on Wednesday was very very poor, food was below average and the usual serving staff had zero conversation, there was more staff than customers who seemed to huddle together whispering in the corner of the restaurant, very off putting I must say..

Went for Sunday lunch as I was aware of the Angler's Arms longstanding good reputation for food but we left unimpressed. I imagine it must have changed hands or changed chefs as Sunday dinner was very average. The staff were lovely, very friendly and accommodating but having really looked forward to a good Sunday lunch we were disappointed. Meat was overcooked and couldn't distinguish between the beef and pork, tiny amount of green veg, mash inedible. Roast potatoes were good. Was around £60 for two Sunday lunches, a kids meal and three soft drinks which wasn't particularly good value. Hopefully they can earn back their previously great reputation over time.

We had a disappointing meal here. My husband had the mushroom truffle pasta dish, which had no sauce at all and very old rocket on the side. I had a reasonable Barnsley chop, but the roasted roots were dry and the roasted carrots appeared burnt. I was told on enquiring that they were purple carrots, which would account for their dark colour, I suppose. They took my husband’s meal off the bill, but we definitely would not return.

We last visited a few years ago as no longer live in the North. What a contrast to previous meals at the Anglers Arms . We hadn't booked but as were very early for dinner we asked if we'd be able to sit in the empty dining area. We were told to go "into the restaurant"? by a chap who was extremely rude, offhand and unwelcoming. We finally realised, after discussion with the friendly but embarrassed barmaid, that we'd been directed (shown to seats, no chance) into what was clearly a breakfast area set up with cereals etc for morning. We consequently opted to sit in the covered terrace area in the rain. Why he couldn't have said the dining area was full or reserved (although it wasn't full when we left), or engaged in any conversation I don't know. The food was priced as you'd expect for a good pub/restaurant. We had fish & chips (£18) and scampi and chips (£17) as what we fancied. I expected some" home" prepared food with some flavour, unfortunately the scampi was extremely poor and tasted like it had been picked up in a discount supermarket freezer aisle. The rest was adequate quality if it were a "cheap and cheerful" but sufficiently disappointing we decided not to opt for dessert. We were treated with all the respect of some dirt stuck to his shoe. I realise it can be a busy venue, although it wasn't at the time, and we aren't "regulars". My only thought is why on earth would people remain regulars now, it can't be for the host and based on our experience can no longer be for the food.

Stopped on way back FROM Cragside as we had eaten here a few years ago with another friend (lunch on the way TO Cragside). Excellent food - Venison and in particular the starter of Crumpet with Black Pudding were well received. The variation on Eton Mess (Rhubarb and custard) was good, too. Good service and friendly staff.

We tried Sunday lunch yesterday and it was merely okay but relatively expensive compared to other options available in the area. Although reasonably tasty, only one small slice of beef and small portions of vegetables, plus being asked to pay extra for cauliflower cheese, didn’t help me to feel that this lunch was worth the £19 charged and worth returning for. There are better available in the area. We were given a table in the bar. The standard of decor and atmosphere aren’t in line with the relatively high prices charged for the food!

We came here for father’s day, with three of us, we opted for the seafood and some extra chips. We did not appreciate how much would appear and how easily we could be defeated. The service was spot on, location worth it and value second to none. There are many excellent restaurants in Northumberland offering seafood platters, here you definitely get value.

Have been coming here for 10+ years and safe to say we won’t be coming back. On arrival was just told to sit anywhere and after sitting for what felt like ages someone eventually brung menus over and took a drinks order. We then received drinks and ordered our food, whilst waiting we noticed hardly any staff doing anything as people were sat with empty plates and when they were asking for simple requests like “extra gravy” or “the bill” there was a sigh which then seemed to be “forgotten”. Food later arrived by a girl (young brown hair with glasses on her head) who looked as though she didn’t want to be here and was so rude towards every single person not just us. Wouldn’t like to ever be greeted by her again. Now.. onto the food. FREEZING. Due to the temperature I nearly assumed it was fresh out the freezer, the only thing that was slightly “warm” if it can even be classed as that was the mash. The table opposite us also made the same comment about how cold the meal was. There was one slice of beef which was the only half decent thing on the plate, one boiled bland carrot and a single parsnip with thick tasteless gravy. When wanting to complain there was no one to be seen to even make a complaint to. Nor did anyone come over to ask if everything was ok. Then sat again for ages waiting for it to be cleared out of sight. Eventually Kelly I’m assuming manager came over to clear our plates she asked was everything okay and we turned round and said no but not a single apology was made nor the chance to give an explanation to why it was so vile. We got the bill and again no one was around to take payment. EVENTUALLY we payed and walked out, glad to make a lucky escape. Will definitely not be returning which is really a shame after all our amazing meals we experienced in the past year. As seen in a previous comment on how bad there experience also was it’s safe to say 2024 is not going well so far for the Anglers. If you want a decent meal then stay well away.

This pub used to be excellent at one time years ago . We'd had Christmas Dinner there twice in the past and on both occasions had an excellent meal , and an excellent time . So who could blame us for thinking of doing it again ? Very unfortunately the experience and Dinner this Christmas was a 5 star let down . A cold damp day , but we looked forward to a cheery warm open real fire . Not so . A strong smell of smoke , true, but the fire was all but out . And no one cared to get it going . That coupled with a muddy and very slippery entrance lobby thanks to some local farmers , and their mud encrusted ' wellies ' , made things a bit dangerous for us all and particularly our disabled family member . We were greeted with a smile , true, but the welcoming Bucks Fizz was sour , not sweet and gave us a taste of what to expect . The ' appetizers' consisting of ... well .. I think it was mud ( maybe from those farmers boots ) on stale pieces of bread , actually made me feel queasy . And I hasten to add I'm not some fussy and delicate eater , having partaken of food all over the world including the Nigerian Jungle- but these were something else again . Then a starter of salmon and cress. It took a while to find the 4 tiny pieces of salmon amidst the cress , but I succeeded . And then Dinner . 3 thin slices of Turkey, 2 tiny sprouts , 1 thin parsnip, a dollop of mashed potato, 4 albino coloured 'roast' potatoes and 1 very sad looking Yorkshire pudding. All covered with a thick tasteless gravy. At the very least they might have served the gravy in a gravy boat , so that one young person with us who hates gravy might have avoided this . But I suspect the gravy was laid on to disguise the contents of the plate . The dessert of Christmas pudding was a further insult . I had envisaged that it would at least look like a small traditional Christmas pudding , but no- it looked like someone had cut a few small pieces from a large pudding with a spoon and covered it with sauce . The final follow up mince pies looked like and tasted like the cheapest you might get from a corner shop . Absolutely no evidence of any care or pride in what was dished up, just a quick money spinner , and as someone who has owned and run a pub restaurant myself , I'd have been ashamed to consider this a normal Sunday meal , let alone a Christmas Dinner . Non of us made bad comments about this meal to each other nor to the hosts, because - it was Christmas day . And who wants to be the sourpuss on Christmas day ? By the way that so called Christmas Dinner meal cost just short of £300. At a guess I'd suggest it cost about 60 pounds max for the entire 3 of us , including costs of staff , lighting etc , so a good profit was made I'm sure . Apart from feeling ' ripped off ' , another annoying thing was we'd had the opportunity to book the meal at the Northumberland Arms at Felton , not far away , but it was our previous experiences at the Anglers Arms which swayed us , plus the number of positive reviews on here . One of my New year resolutions is to look at the negative reviews on a place first and take them as a better indicator of what to expect . Another is to take photos of meals I'm presented with as evidence of them being good or being a disaster.

We got a really good deal for B&B, the staff are very welcoming, the bar area is really cosy we ate our dinner in there then breakfast in the dining room. The food; huge portions, good value for money all freshly prepared, the bar area was packed with families and couples enjoying the meals when we checked in at 5pm, by the time we went back down at 6:30 around half of the tables were occupied, we had a lovely table for two near to the fire, I ordered sea bass which came with a fish curry and rice, the portion size was huge and the food delicious, my husband went for the chicken which he enjoyed. Breakfast was plentiful with continental options as well as traditional cooked, avacado on toast with poached eggs, salmon with scrambled eggs- spolit for choice! The room; comfortable, teibbottles of water, ringtons tea and coffee and complimentary brownies, great view across the bridge/river(room 2). Location: ideal for rothbury, Morpeth and Alnwick. The staff are a credit to the owner we will be visiting again next year.

We had a lovely meal at the Angler’s Arms recently on our one night Sunday Sleepover stay. The deal includes a main meal from the Sunday lunch menu. We both opted for the turkey roast; the portions were massive and the turkey was really tender. The only negative was that my Yorkshire pudding was tough which was a shame. We were stuffed but determined to have dessert and both ended up choosing sticky toffee pudding which hit the spot! We both had a medium glass of Shiraz with our meal, which was a sufficient quantity of alcohol for us. Having read comments about the price of wine in other reviews I checked the wine list before ordering and was reassured that the price of a medium glass of wine was comparable with other restaurants, which I had absolutely no doubt would be the case. Service was prompt and friendly and the atmosphere in the bar area was nice and relaxed. I must also commend the breakfast offering, which was exceptional in terms of both quantity and quality.

Please note that this maybe a duplicate review, as my original has failed to appear here to date. My wife and I go out for a pub lunch-time meal once a week, usually on Fridays. We found this pub that we had never been to before. It was a bit of a long drive for a meal - about 17 miles each way - but we were used to driving upto 50 miles each way when abroad for a different place and menu. At the outset, I was brought a pint of a different real ale to that requested and the stated correct replacement, to be honest, tasted much the same, so I would say that the real ales are not particularly well kept. Over the course of the meal, my wife had two 250ml "large" glases of Pinot Grigio, for which we were charged £19.10, yes £19.10, £9.55 a glass, the dearest glasses of wine we have ever had in a pub, more than the price of four pints of ale! As my wife had paid on her card, on looking at the receipt later, I even rang to check that the price was correct and was told that it was. For starters, I had camembert at £9 and my wife had whitebait at £8. Both were substantial portions and very nice. For mains, my wife had a substantial portion of chargrilled chicken, which was very nice. I had roast pork, black pudding mash with gravy and three carrot batons i.e. one vegetable, whereas the menu stated "seasonal vegetables" plural. Though very nice, the portion was small and I easily manged to eat every scrap. Normally, I struggle with the portions of the mains after eating all of the starters. I wished that I had chosen my wife's main choice, for volume. Overall then, the meal was nice if unsubstatial on my part. The real ale was poor and the wine was ridiculously overpriced. We would eat there again but my wife said, unsurprisingly, that she would not be drinking the wine at that price.

We enjoyed dining at the Anglers Arms so much last year during our holiday in the area that we made a point of having a meal there again this year during the second week of our summer holiday. We arrived just before 5pm and, as it was a mild evening, we decided to sit in the covered terrace area which was lovely and relaxing. The food arrived quickly and the service was pleasant. I really enjoyed the asparagus and butternut curry and the hubby enjoyed his steak pie too. We both had puds which were lush! We did have a long wait for the bill; the staff weren't like appearing so we went into the bar and paid which wasn't an issue (although I hoped that the other customers didn't think we were doing a runner!). The food and drinks were reasonably priced and on par with other places where we've dined recently. It's always great to find that a place is still up to the same standard a year on :-)

We were actually booked in elsewhere for a late Sunday lunch but walked out of that establishment after being completely ignored. We’d eaten before at the Anglers Arms after a recommendation from a local and had really enjoyed it . We were welcomed with a smile despite not having a reservation and our orders were swiftly taken for both drinks and food. The Sunday lunch of pork and all the trimmings was uber tasty and the crumble pudding hit the mark. The only thing I would comment on would be what I felt was an exorbitant cost for a glass of wine at £9 ( albeit it was a fairly large one but in hindsight I wish I’d ordered a bottle but the prices weren’t visible before ordering ) All in all top notch food , a lovely warm welcome and I’d certainly visit again when in the area

We stopped at The Anglers Rest for 2 nights, and it could easily have been a disaster because on the first night our water failed. No shower loo or sink. We were already in the restaurant having our evening meal when news came that the water had failed, and with the hotel at capacity there was nowhere they could move us. But the staff were great, bringing up bottled water and a huge bucket of water for the loo. At breakfast they were ringing emergency plumbers and when we got back from our day out all services were back on form. Breakfasts were great and so was the food in the restaurant. A special thank you to Kelly who went the extra mile. Our bill was reduced as compensation for the problems and our first night's restaurant and bar bill were cancelled. It was an inconvenience for which we were adequately compensated. Our second night was very enjoyable and we would certainly stop here again, despite the problem.

Worst of all the swallows were not nesting in the outside entrance area as we have enjoyed the swallows swooping in and out in many a year gone by - I do hope there was no deliberate act to stop them from nesting as nests seem to have been removed.

Warkworth has a small nucleus of great places to eat, and we'd never tried Bertrams, so we went. It was a no brainer given the quality of other reviews. The only downside was that we had to get in and out early so were nearly the first people in hence little "atmosphere" but that was our agenda not the restaurant, and we were there for the food... ... which was first class. Superb hake served with a beautiful herby crab pate and dauphinoise potatoes. The flavours were immense and everything was cooked to perfection. You notice the difference with real quality and top chef standards and this delivered for me. The lemon meringue dessert was the proverbial icing on the metaphorical cake. Superb.

My cousin and I were hugely impressed by Castaways. I had been reluctant to go because about 20 years ago the original café had been taken over by a useless couple. But when I passed and looked in, I could see that its original atmosphere had been recreated by the current management. Our reception was very friendly. The café was full (always a good sign) and we were third in the queue. Our table was soon ready and we were seatedby a waitress. We were very comfortable and the atmosphere was nice. Many pleasant people there as customers happily dining and chatting. Good choice of food and drink. I had the traditional breakfast and my cousin had… I think it was avocado and egg on sourdough bread. We were both very content with our lunch. I will certainly return and bring members of my family to enjoy castaways. Nicely sited, easy car parking and great views over Seaton Sluice and the sea. Get yourself along there and have a treat!
