We were offered service earlier in the restaurant or the bar. We were joined by another couple for dinner. We were presented with a “special “ menu and the normal dinner menu . Two of us ordered starters and what we thought was an entree from the “special” menu. However is main turned out to be “3” scallops for £9.95. I could have bought a half lobster for that price. We also requested that the dining bill be divided between the two parties and they refused.

If you are hungry after 3 pm and before dinner, do not look for food in Tain. We tried 2 places, even out hotel The Mansfield castle hotel. You can get tea and a cookie, ut thats about it... The hotel it’s self could have been much improved by a bit of spit and polish. Everything looked drab. It isnt a REAL Castle at all... i wont stay there in future.

We come here pretty regularly, for the food is truly good, the chef has a real passion for what he does and it shows! It is a bit off the "beaten track" being up the hill from the main High Street, but is well worth the extra effort of visiting, with a lovely country house feel and the staff are so attentive and friendly, and make you feel at home. Love coming and having a meal here, fresh and beautifully cooked. My partner is a fellow chef so hard to please, and he likes the food here very much indeed. Thanks to everyone, you are all fab.

The restaurant menu had an abundance of local produce, which we couldn't help but sample! Venison was fab, cheese board with local cheeses was a joy, eye candy of the cheese world! Peroni on tap, who could ask for more! ;-) We will be back this year, in September!

Visiting Tain I decide to treat my parents to a meal in the place where I spent my early years. Back then it was Mansfield House Hotel, not sure where the grander Castle came from.Initially we had booked a bar supper but we were asked if we wanted to eat in the dining room and as the menu for bar food did seem slightly expensive we readily agreed.I don’t eat meat so decide I would plump for the local (I presumed) Scampi which came with chips and mushy peas on the side. As I really do not like mushy peas I asked the waitress if maybe if I could have some salad and coleslaw instead, this was the accompaniment to my husband’s meal so I presumed a simple request. I was a bit bemused when she said she would have to consult with the chef and even more bemused when told that the coleslaw and salad only came with my husband’s choice of meal. This meant instead of Scampi I plumped for the Tuna which didn’t come with those pesky peas! There were four tables of diners including our party of four and three waiting staff in the dining room so I was extremely disappointed that once we were seated no-one thought to ask if we would like to see the Wine List or heaven forbid some water for the table. It also proved very difficult to attract the attention of any of the staff in order to request the elusive wine list and some water. I’m not sure if the waitress was joking when she asked if we thought there was room on the table for a jug of water!Service was unobtrusive to the point of being non-existent but on the plus side the food was very good. The waiting staff seemed more interested in chatting at reception than attending to diners although the residents at the table next to us were asked three times if they wished to see the dessert menu.A little politeness and maybe a smile would not go amiss and may even earn a tip girls! My parents left the table and we waited for the bill to arrive………in the end, with empty plates and no-one asking if we would like coffee we had to ask at reception for the bill which had not materialised.I was very disappointed as the place has so much potential to do better. Maybe now that this is a Castle they don’t want casual diners or local clientele in which case they are well on the way to success.

Good start, menu looked great and initial waitress was most helpful, friendly and upbeat. For the children we could have half portions of mains as well as macaroni etc. . All sounding perfect. Unfortunately, when it came to ordering, different waitress, not at all helpful. We opted for the macaroni but we're told they had run out of pasta. Then, we requested peas instead of mushy peas, but she said she didn't think that possible. Food was mixed, my wife's fish pie (with peas!) was good, my cullin skink was dreadful. I can almost forgive bad food, but on top was awful service (sitting with empty glass watching the waitress go by over and over again) and a nice bit of pre programmed overcharging on the bill (which was thankfully noticed). So, in summary, if you have to go, check your bill.

Sit in the dining room if you want your food faster. We were in the bar, and it took a while. They did ask if we wanted to sit in the dining room, and we chose to stay in the bar. Food was good and hot. The waitstaff seemed short handed and complained to each other behind the bar.

We chose to have a special meal with friends and chose to go here because it was supposed to have a good reputation. When we got the menu we were really disappointed by the unimaginative choice of food - more like pub grub - chips with almost everything! Prices expensive for what was on offer. It took a long time for the waitress to come and take our order - but by that time we had decided that there was nothing any of us fancied. The waitress was charming and we (almost) felt bad about telling her what we thought. The place itself looked as though it had been an amazing plce - but now had the feel of being slightly run down.

Decided to eat here on the strength of the TA reviews. We ate in the bar ... same menu as the formal restaurant ... good selection of meals and wines at reasonable prices. Staff friendly and efficient. Imposing building, but the grounds could be better looked after. And smokers should be discouraged from puffing away around the hotel entrance; it creates a very very bad image.

For a friday night it wasn't too busy and even had the option of eating in the bar if we wished. The staff provided us with everything we asked and left us alone when we were the last couple in the restaurant too.The food was brought out pretty quick as well as the wine. The food itself was nice but the menu didn't have much variety on it. Decided to eat out the following night due to this.We had breakfast here in the morning which was just what we needed. A full cooked breakfast with plenty of toast, jam, honey and fruit was available to keep us going into the late afternoon!

We (two couples) arrived late on a Saturday evening without reservations and were told by the hostess that we could be seated in 30-40 minutes because they were very busy. We found that to be quite amusing since there were eight or fewer customers seated in the restaurant which has 12-16 tables. That was okay, though, as we all enjoyed a drink in the bar/lounge until we were seated. The restaurant has a very formal air about it, but it was very relaxing and comfortable. The service by the young waitstaff was very good, as was the food. Three of us ordered steak, one had a fish dish, and we all agreed that it was one of the best meals we enjoyed during our 10-day travels. Considering everything we paid for during the trip was expensive, the prices were very reasonable. Overall, a very pleasant dining experience.

No food on offer other than crisps, ice cream and a meagre offering of cake, shocked as we were there for a 1pm show and had travelled over an hour thinking we would be fine for lunch at the theatre. Staff were fine, no hint of getting things done in a timely fashion and not much interaction with customers. Decor is depressing, such a big space makes it cold and echoey. Just no atmosphere whatsoever. Very disappointed and won't be back.

We stayed at this Inn/Hotel at the beginning of November, returning home we received an email asking us to review our stay. This we did by email, however, we did not receive a reply nor did we receive a reply to our follow up copy email, which I now type below. "Many thanks for your email, usually we send a report good or bad to Tripadvisor, as you have asked for feedback I am happy to share our thoughts with you initially. I have an email from you confirming our reservation from the 4th to the 8th November, 2024 in a Garden Room. This was because we have a dog and thought this would be an easier option should she need to go outside. When we arrived we had NOT been booked into a Garden Room for our five nights, as per your confirmation. We were offered a garden room for 3 nights and two other nights elsewhere within the hotel. I really did not feel changing rooms, packing and unpacking for two nights was a good idea, so we opted to stay again in Room 111 for the five night stay. I am sure you will agree, this was not a good start to our holiday. I spoke to another couple who had also booked a garden room only to find they too had been misallocated a room and these long established customers were very upset and vowed not to return next year for their 8th year. I feel it necessary to draw to your attention the lack of servicing for Room 111. Each day our duvet was "just turned over at the top", the bottom sheet was not straightened and the pillows were as we had arisen, not even straightened and aligned. The cleanliness in the bathroom left much to be desired. As I am sure you are aware there is no toilet brush next to the lavatory. The toilet was not cleaned throughout our stay and the bowl after five nights was turning a light shade of brown, however, diligent attention was paid to folding and making the spare toilet roll and the one for use look pretty. I would have preferred a clean toilet. This takes me on to the bath. On arrival there was a single long dark hair in the bath, as we did not use the bath and both have grey hair, this was still there when we left!! The shower doors require a thorough clean and polish, there is black mould on the wall and around the base of the shower. During our stay this was NOT cleaned at all. Mould and Mildew spray with a toothbrush would solve this problem. Likewise the wash hand basin was neglected. No dusting or vacuuming was carried out in the room for the duration of our stay. For your information I left a piece of cotton and a clean tissue on the floor and they were not picked up. When we had dinner in the bar area dogs were quite welcome. However, in the morning we did feel rather like second class citizens as we were with other dog owners required to use the alternative dining room, which was uninviting and a long way from the self-service area in the breakfast room. On two days for breakfast we were along with four other owners with dogs, allowed to use the breakfast room. No explanation was given for the flexible rule. To end on a good note, the staff were pleasant and helpful, always willing to assist in anyway they could. It is with interest I await your response. " On our next trip to Scotland we shall stay elsewhere.
