The new owners seem to have sucked all the personality out of the place. It’s so dreary and dreadful I honestly don’t know where to begin… it looks like a care home. The colour is abysmal, it used to be so warm and inviting and now could easily double up as nursing home if the staff wore NHS uniforms I don’t know what they’re trying to achieve with the look and feel of it. The exposed stainless steel kitchen equipment that gives the conservatory a morgue-like feel has the most unappealing and unimaginative food I’ve ever seen. The food and interior and “saladette” bar (what a terrible name) is like stepping back in time. Shame, there is so much potential to turn this place into a food destination with inventive good quality pub grub, sadly every single thing misses the mark .

The menu is definitely not a restaurant menu , very limited nothing substantial more of a cafe with not very good food. Nothing requiring any cooking skill but still badly done. No cooked chicken, or meat dish or pie apart from chilli or veg curry My husband had a small overcooked burger with soggy chips and my first choice of venison burger was not available, surprising with such a limited choice,so had coronation baked potato. Cheap chicken in mayo with a dash of curry powder and the potato was hard. They do have a carvery Friday -Sunday but not everyone's choice. Definitely would not recommend

This was probably the worst food and atmosphere I have ever experienced! On the plus side the staff were lovely. My husband and I visited last month for lunch, everything about this place is tacky. The decor was awful, badly done with no warmth and so run down. Stains on the ceiling, filthy stained carpets in the toilets. The tables and chairs look and feel cheap. We both had fish and chips, the batter was so hard it was inedible. There was work going on so disturbing drilling going on in the background. I felt so sorry for the staff, the table next to us complained so only paid for their drinks. What a disappointment, this hotel used to be up there but no longer. So sad!

When we came here roughly 10 years ago it was always busy and had a great atmosphere. We were visiting the nearby Yester Castle ruins and decided to pop in for a light bite. We knew the place had been taken over and the reviews were not great, but we decided to try it out. It has been refurbished and has sadly lost all its old character, we were the only people in there. The staff were friendly, but there was no atmosphere at all, our soup arrived cold so we decided to leave ☹️

Been to the Goblin Ha many times over the years, just live down the road. So pleased to hear it had reopened. Called in last Friday just for a drink and was so disappointed as it has lost all original character, the decor makes it so cold and unwelcoming. Whoever chose to paint the entire bar in a mono coloured ice blue. Used to be a wonderful country pub, won’t be back

Lovely pub with great service. Visited this pub for the first time. We previously visited the village but stayed at the tweed across the road. Got family in the village so they booked a table for us here. Had pre dinner drinks outside, in the lovely garden area. We got told our food was ready so we headed inside. I had the vegetarian tai green curry(I am not a veggie but wanted the curry). It was delicious. My husband had the burger and he said it was really nice. Apart from 1 meal out of 7 we all enjoyed the food. The bill was reasonable too, on reflection I would definitely visit again if we were in the area.

We tried it out today, as we hadn’t been in a long time. Waited 35 mins to be served a drink. Waited longer for the food to arrive, I had the steak which was nice, my wife had the steak pie which was loaded with salt. She ended up feeling ill after a few mouthfuls. They took the steak pie off the bill, which was fair enough. The menu is very limited, with a lot of caveats! Unfortunately not what it used to be!

This was a lovely find. We booked to stay in the Tweeddale Arms across the road. The village was very quiet when we arrived. We flipped a coin to decide which place to eat and The Goblin Ha won and what a treat. The food was delicious and excellent value for money, lovely beers and ciders on offer and the warmest welcome and greatest service from Tomasz and the rest of the team. Thank you for making a special trip even better x

The welcome was friendly and the staff were attentive. The food was delicious - two of us had the Steak and Guinness pie and the meat inside it was lovely, as was the pastry topping. Too often with steak pies in pubs and restaurants, the pastry topping hides a few bits of fatty, scraggy meat - but not in this case, the pie of full of nice, tender beef. The other person in our party had the Beer battered haddock and said it was very tasty and the batter was crispy and delicious. We were too full for desserts but they did look tempting!! Would certainly go again!

Popped along for a relaxed dinner with my partner and toddler son on a Sunday afternoon. Couldn't fault the place at all. The food was delicious and came out in good time. I can tell that it's made in house and not the reheated mass produced food that is getting more and more common for pubs to serve up. I thoroughly enjoyed the steak and Guinness pie. My partner enjoyed his fish and chips and my son enjoyed the kids menu. The food was good quality and well priced too. We decided we would be coming back as we liked it :) it's great for a pub!

We don’t eat out much but in the last few years have had lunch or dinner out a few times. Especially as have to take elderly relatives out for a treat. Most recently had come t o decision I would just in future buy sandwiches from M&S . The trend seems to be toward lego shaped cubes of unrecognisable treats such as smoked salmon ?puree? or last Xmas ordered turkey which had been processed and squeezed into a stocking shaped roll of which we each had one’slice’ - I just couldn’t eat it!! Was recommended I try Goblin Ha in Gifford which was conveniently near a relatives house. Not expecting much. So what a surprise. Real food. Real soup. Real recognisable starter of prawn cocktail. Real main course. Haddock. Brilliant. Haggis delicious. Puddings yummy. Don’t know what the others ordered. I couldn’t finish mine there was too much. All perfectly cooked and presented . It wasnt expensive . £170 for 7 of us most with starter main and dessert. And drinks. (ordered one bottle wine) Don’t know how they do it. Has been ‘taken over since last visited few years ago. Unfortunately because of family circumstances unlikely will be able to go often but thoroughly recommend to anyone . The layout has also been changed and our young relatives were delighted to see 2 geese in comfy enclosure. Thoroughly recommend to anyone not just for value of money but for enjoyable edible food.

Thought this was a lovely gesture. I ordered the goats cheese bruschetta, this came, its was really nice and fresh. A different option from the usuals you see on a menu, it was tasty and reasonably priced. We’ve been before as a large group for once of there karaoke nights, this was great fun. Unfortunately the Sunday roast was a pale shadow of what it used to be. The meat was tough and hard to cut. The gravy was a runny juice no taste or substance. Sadly the roast potatoes were not really roasted and they along with the carrots and rock hard parsnip were covered in mixed spice which left everything tasting the same. The Yorkshire pudding was under cooked and tasteless. Meanwhile my colleague had to send back his huge trout which was raw inside. Tasty enough fish 10 minutes later spoilt by being un-filleted. The Haggis Cigar starter was tasty and delicious. Unfortunately it was overcharged by £1.00 On the receipt. I wish the new owner well. They have only had the place 2 weeks but without a new cook I fear you will struggle. As a previous monthly regular pre Covid, sadly it is now off the list.

Booked as a group of 7 but on arrival we had to wait while they rearranged furniture to make a table for 7. Waiting staff were clueless answering questions about gluten-free food and the responses from the kitchen weren't any better. Worst of all was the food, cremated gammon for one person but our biggest complaint was an adult main course of mac and cheese which was the smallest main course portion I have seen in my 65 years. It cost twice as much and was half the size of the two childrens meals we ordered. We complained politely but very vehemently and asked for our complaint to be put to the management. The waiter said he had passed it on but we got ABSOLUTELY NO RESPONSE from anyone. I cannot think of an adjective bad enough to describe this level of customer service.

Went on Saturday evening with my partner. told to grab a seat anywhere, which we duly did, taking our drinks with us. looked at the menu and was basic but good enough pub grub, order was taken 15 minutes after taking out seats, I ordered a starter of Stornoway black pudding with crispy bacon and poached egg, my dining companion declined a starter, upon arrival at the table it looked nice stacked up two pieces of black pudding and on the bottom a piece of bacon no longer that 25 mm first layer of the pudding sat top this and then another piece of bacon 25mm long and on top of this the other slice of pudding topped with a poached egg which was done to perfection, so not a huge starter but sufficient. So to my main Haggis, neeps and tatties, my companion opting for a pasta dish, feta cheese and shavings of paramasan , in a nice large bowl, looked good, and my plate was laid down in front of me, I almost burst out laughing, Im no Sherlock Holmes but id gladly have borrowed his magnifying glass to spot the food on the plate, imagine a spoon with one scoop potato and one of turnip, same again of haggis, then halve the amounts place them on a plate in a star shape to make some attempt at making it look as though food was actually there, a small drizzle around of peppercorn sauce , again to add value to what was the smallest main course ive ever had, so all in all, would i go back? ....NO! Im not being picky but even as a starter if would just about have sufficed, certainly never as a main, come on guys you have the makings of a very good pub restaurant but it was a zero for value from me.

My family and I recently revisited the Goblin after having vowed to never return due to the serious lack of standards that had fallen onto the place and awful food to go with it... Having read other recent reviews on here I am a little surprised as we felt there was a clear improvement in standards... That said, we did not stay in the rooms which seems to be where the core of the issues comes from and there were more negatives to consider than just staff.

We ordered the tandoori sea bass - this was the worst meal we have ever had here. The fish was as dry as it could be, the ‘tandoori potatoes ‘ were potatoes with a bit of curry powder through them and the spinach on the side was bland and unseasoned . It was truly awful ? The service was fine and when I mentioned the issues to the waitress there was no problem, she took it off the bill. To be quite honest, I wasn’t worried about the bill but more about a good local restaurant going downhill . Please get a good chef and keep up the previous good standards, tonight was just dreadful - sorry

Gifford is a small, pretty village in East Lothian and the Goblin Ha' is a pub restaurant with small hotel attached. We'd booked a table for a few friends in advance and when we arrived we were the only ones there. The pub was staffed with a few young girls who seemed more interested in chatting among themselves than serving us. The ordering was haphazard, we all had to order and pay up front separately. They got our order wrong, one of us was served immediately but the rest of us had to wait nearly an hour for our food to arrive. No apologies. The food was ok when it did arrive but does it really take an hour to put a salad together? Very poor service.

Used to be my favourite venue for special occasions due to being local. Although never particularly great food it was always ok with excellent service and nice setting. Not last night. Food took 1.5 hours to arrive, one meal was sent back, another one should have been sent back and a third one didn't arrive in the first place. The rest were edible at best, all very disappointing. One of the two bar staff was clearly clueless with the other one stressed and oblivious to customers waiting to order. To top it all, we were being 'entertained' by a large group of very loud and obnoxious drunks (who were seated next to a family with small children). We didn't bother staying for dessert and won't be back in a hurry.

Sadly the garden and patio area have seen better days. In some areas it's bordering on dangerous. A broken wooden table and a very broken wooden parasol both just apparently dumped in the grassy area. Numerous cigarette ends and general rubbish in the garden and patio area. What appears to be a potting area is now just a mess. The food was nice enough but the general grubbiness and overall impression of the place spoilt our meal somewhat. We won't be back.

First of all, the staff were lovely: friendly and attentive and I was given £5 off the cost of the meal when I complained about the time it took to get food on our table after ordering (40 minutes). But, after all the long wait I can only say that our food was poor to average at best...sorry!

We arrived and were ignored. I went for menus and was grunted at to collect them from a pile. I went in to place our order for food and drinks. Half an hour later we still had no drinks. I went in the ask about them and the barman was leaning on the empty bar, having completely forgotten our order. 10 minutes later our food arrived and we still had no drinks. The waitress gave us some poor attitude when I reminded her that we still didn't have them. No apology. I had ordered steak fries medium rare. It was a tiny piece of meat, cooked very well done. The kids meals were OK and scampi good but accompanying pea puree stone cold. There were only 2 or 3 other tables in the restaurant at the time. There really is no excuse for this poor service and lack of attention to quality food. I'm really disappointed. We used to come here loads and a stopped after a previous bad experience (when I contacted the restaurant direct and was basically told 'you should have said something at the time') and really wanted to have this back on our list as a local place to visit. Alas, we will not be back

Having been to the Goblin Ha' to eat lunch/dinner several times before we were very disappointed with this visit. The service was poor and the staff really need some more training. Having been given our menus with a reasonable welcome we waited some 10-15 minutes before being asked if we wanted to order drinks. Then some further 5-10 minutes passed before our (main course) order was eventually taken. A reasonable amount of time (20 minutes?) passed until our food arrived. Most was good standard* and tasty. However nobody came to ask if everything was OK* and we waited for at least 10 minutes having finished our main course before giving up on the possibility of being asked if we would like more drinks or the dessert menu. We therefore just got up, paid at the counter and left. The restaurant was not busy compared to previous visits at weekend lunchtime where service had been fine if a bit on the (acceptable) slow side. * re. the food - 1. "green salad" was disappointing with a few of the same type of green lettuce leaves. 2. "Classic Chicken Caesar Salad" had no anchovies despite being listed on the menu. The soft lettuce was not the correct type for that dish . There was way far too much sauce which swamped the flavour of the chicken & bacon. The bacon was not crispy. Sorry but very disappointing and we won't be back. Hope that the Management/Owners take note to improve things for future customers.

We enjoyed the food here and found the atmosphere of the restaurant very comfortable and pleasant for a drink and for a meal. We would eat here again if passing through this area.

I visited with a friend on a week day therefore restaurant was quiet. I ordered fish pie it was ok tasted good but no veg, salad or bread to accompany it I thought this was poor. Service was also not that great I had to go up to the bar every time I wanted a drink as waitress was not available.

My partner and I, along with our 2 dogs had tea here and it was lovely and very filling. The dogs were made very welcome and fussed by the friendly and attentive staff. I had a pizza which was tasty on a thin, crispy base and my partner had garlicky chicken. Both meals left us too full for puddings.

Stayed here for a couple of nights as a family wedding was in Haddington. All the staff were really lovely, friendly and very helpful, especially when my Uncle's partner took ill - allowed us to take up some food to her and nothing seemed to be too much trouble. Beds really comfy and food was good.

I have brought my mother to meet a cousin in this lovely pub on several occasions. The landlord very kindly opened up the garden section of the dining room for us to eat our lunch in as it was quieter for my mother who is rather deaf. In the summer we have had lunch outside in the garden. The service is good with friendly waiters and delicious food. We will return again soon.

We have been here many times and have always had great food with very friendly service. Today we had the steak sandwich and steak frites, both were excellent and very reasonably priced for the quality of the ingredients. The main bar is a nice area to sit in and feels quite relaxed, especially cosy when the open fire is lit. Nice local art on the walls. We’ve taken family here previously who have also been impressed with the food, the garlic mushrooms in particular were a hit! Good selection of beers and cider. All in all a great wee country pub in a nice village and very reasonably priced (coming from Edinburgh!)

It was a cold day, and we had been walking the hills, 31st December. Hungry in Gifford, we spotted the Goblin Ha' and were given a table for four. A warm atmosphere. Friendly. Decent menu. Not too expensive. Fish pie really good, and murmurs of satisfaction from those with fish and chips, and pasta. Would go again.

Waited over 30 mins for our order of Nachos and a burger. Restaurant quite quiet and other people arriving after us were being served before us. When we reminded staff we still hadn't been served, our meal arrived soon after that , but the nachos were only lukewarm and the burger was raw in the centre. It had to be returned, and another nachos ordered instead. This time they were actually hot. A staff member then tried to tell us that all the burgers looked pink in the middle and that they were actually cooked all the way through. Really?? Won't be going back anytime soon and can't recommend it.

Ate here with my girlfriend last Sunday evening and the meal was an absolute disgrace. The risotto was made from a short grain, supermarket rice and was dripping with so much liquid it looked and tasted as if it had been left out in the rain all day.Confit of duck was overcooked, dry and salty. When I told the duty manager what I thought I was met with an embarrassed silence and no hint of an apology. The waiting staff were highly professional and they have obviously spent a lot of money on the decor lately. Would have done better to invest in a decent chef.

Visited today for what was meant to be a special birthday lunch in a tight two hour slot for our Mum. Had to chase the meals twice for our party of ten, then nine arrived with the other one fifteen minutes later. Chicken was rubbery and not good, as our Mum had had enough by then taxi was called early. Have to say Staff and Manager did apologise and offered free sweets and discount, so they did try to rectify the disaster of a meal, but we won't be back ....sorry...

We had lunch here recently, after a walk in the area. The restaurant has plenty of space in the main bar area, plus a big conservatory and a beer garden. The menu contains a good selection of dishes, and the pizzas we chose were freshly prepared and delicious. Service was friendly and efficient.

I took my family here for a sunday lunch and it was beyond my expectations. The choice on the menu was extensive and there was something to suit all of our taste buds. The portions were generous in size and well cooked. The service was superb and the manager gave us the warmest welcome. (Andy I think was his name) We sat in the conservatory with lovely views over the back garden. The service was prompt and very courteous. The place had such welcoming feel to it that I have not experienced in a while. I will definitely be back

I usually get takeaway cakes or pastries and bread, but it was nice to take the kids and sit in. We all love the food there. The brownies are the best you'll find anywhere. The cruffins are delicious. I recommend the porridge loaf. And the cappacinos. My kids love the croissants, sausage rolls, doughnuts and cardomom buns.

Where to start. First the elderly lady behind the counter didn't won't to serve us or anyone for that matter, so a man took over. The large breakfast my husband ordered was no bigger than my small one, both breakfast were luke warm, and the drinks barely hot. Apparently they aren't allowed to sell the meals to hot? if this is right they should install a microwave somewhere so the customer can heat there own own meals.
