Best Sunday lunch we have had in a long time . The roast potatoes best ever. The service was outstanding. Especially the young gentleman who looked after us. Good service seems to be very rare these days so it was great to be looked after so well. Would highly recommend this pub

We stayed a year ago also and decided to come back as we really enjoyed it. Rooms are comfy, very good food, good service (although they did mess our booking up reception was a bit disorganised) nice walks along the river. All in all very good, be warned this is more of an up market pub and the prices reflect that, the quality is higher than your bog standard pub, be prepared to pay for it.

I came across the Fox and Hounds as I needed a hotel near to Pickering and my others were fully booked, so we managed to book a room and a table at the Fox and Hounds. We had a lovely quiet table, the atmosphere in the restaurant area was lovely and relaxed, we reviewed the menu and the specials and I decided to go with the fillet steak and I am so glad I did, the steak was out of this world, the sauce was delicious and the portions were what you would expect from a fine dining restaurant, the sweets were absolutely fantastic. We found the staff to be friendly and knowledgeable about the food and wines. As we stayed the night we were able to take breakfast in the morning, again it was just a delight, fresh and very tasty. The wait time again were what you expect from such good cooking but well worth it. My only regret is I had beer before the meal so wine would not work for me, next time I will wait for the wine. Yes, this is now on our list of favourites and we can honestly say it was the best food for miles, dont expect to pay Mac Donalds prices and dont expect fast food, this is a really great restaurant.

We came here for my wife’s birthday and opted for the Ala carte menu. Lovely little pub, really clean and friendly staff. We didn’t look at the menu before we booked so was shocked when staff brought it to the table. The menu didn’t reflect a country pub/Inn and was pretentious and massively overpriced. There was a note at the bottom of the menu about how the chef likes to serve the food as intended, which was a red flag. When the food arrived it did taste nice enough but there was practically nothing there. We decided not to have dessert as we feared we would need to remortgage! A country pub should be about rustic, honest, wholesome food and should feel like the next step up from home. I had to remind myself I wasn’t in London wearing a tuxedo but in North Yorkshire at a country pub. Lovely little inn but need a reality check and maybe a change of supplier as I see on here there are lots of responses from the owner referencing food costs etc. We had our 2 kids with us so they had soft drinks. Expected to pay a bit more than average with it being Ala carte but nearly £200 for 4 mains and 2 drinks each, I mean really??!!

We had 2 evening meals and there was a good choice of fish and meat. It is an expensive menu but the food was excellent from the trio of fish starters and the halibut and also the Yorkshire lamb. The staff enjoy their work and are very friendly. We also had 2 excellent breakfasts with a good choice. We would have liked some fresh fruit but we really enjoyed our breakfasts.

This is a special place, its not often im really impressed but The Fox & Hound deserves lots of praise. From the fantastic menu and food to the great and friendly staff i could not pick fault. The whole place is finished to a really high standard and you can see the care and love put into every detail. The outdoor area is the best I can ever remember seeing. 8 of us had lunch ( 4 adults and 4 children ) and everything was perfect. This could become my favourite pub in North Yorkshire.

We went for 2 courses and ended up ordering dessert too! Staff were all so helpful! Definitely worth a stop if you are in the area!

Booked for dinner on Sunday. The service set the scene initially. It was friendly, professional and efficient. The menu was interesting and there were some lovely specials. The cooking exceeded all our expectations, wonderful flavours, not too big and perfectly cooked. There was real attention to detail. Clearly a very talented chef in the kitchen. I am normally too full for a dessert but I couldn’t resist the raspberry soufflé and it was beautifully light. Altogether well up to the best of the best and although not cheap we felt the quality of the food and service made it excellent value for money. Can’t wait to return and perhaps stay a night or two in the lovely bedrooms.

We visited the Fox & Hounds last night for dinner with our 2 dogs to meet up with family who live close to York. We sat in the bar. All 4 of us had the scallops to start, they were beautifully presented and very tasty. For our main course, two of us had halibut, one had the beef fillet and one had the duo beef. Again the dishes were beautifully presented and very flavoursome. We would not hesitate to recommend this inn for dinner and would certainly visit again if we are ever in the area.

This is an attractive venue in a lovely village. We were there for a special occasion so sorry not to be able to give a better account. The non-vegetarians had a good meal. However the three veggie/vegans had one option and this was not as had been described. This was particularly disappointing because we had taken time and trouble beforehand to ensure that meat-free diets were catered for. Sorry - can't recommend it.

On arrival we were met by the friendly staff , we had drinks first in a lovely lounge .We were then taken to our table in a very nicely decorated restaurant and chose our food from the high end menu . (Pricing to match) The service at the start of our meal was very good and our starters were served and were beautifully presented . My wife had the courgette flower stuffed with crab which whilst it was very nice there wasn’t very much evidence of the crab . I had the ham hock and it was delicious. Our main courses - Hake for my wife and fillet of beef for myself were absolutely stunning and well presented .After the main course this is where the service deteriorated- the restaurant manager asked us if we wanted to see the dessert menu and we said yes . We then sat for ages waiting for her to bring us the menu which she obviously forgot as she kept serving other people who I believe were residents . We eventually attracted the attention of another waiter and he brought us the menu - the waitress then came to take our order but came back later to say our choice of strawberry creme patisserie tartlet were now sold out and they could offer an alternative strawberry dish which my wife accepted- however when it came it was just a few strawberries and raspberries on a small amount of crumb - the cost was still £9 !! No allowance was offered for just a few pieces of fruit . My sticky toffee pudding was excellent .After finishing our desserts we were left for ages before the table was cleared and the bill offered - again I had to attract the waitresses attention to ask for the bill which then took approx 10 mins to arrive then a further wait for the card machine. The ambience of the restaurant was excellent , it is stylishly decorated and the food was of a high quality (probably the best we have had outside of a Michelin starred restaurant) - however unfortunately the service deteriorated after the residents arrived and put a bit of a dampener on the evening - hence the four star rating .

When we first arrived we were told initially they did not have a reservation for us despite booking a few weeks ahead but had a table they could offer, later they found the booking but were uncertain which day it was recorded under! The staff here are pleasant and courteous but we found the menu choice quite limited. The main courses offered several fish choices and only steak, also the prices ranged from around £18/£19 or leaped up to £34 + We ordered starters stuffed courgette flower with crab and my partner ordered soup, both were acceptable. We'd had steak the night before elsewhere so our only other option was fish and we both had the Halibut. It was okay, nothing fantastic and my partners wasn't very warm either but for £34 each we would of expected more.Drink prices were average but all desserts were priced at £9 (can't remember if icecream was less expensive) but after a disappointing main course we decided to give it a miss. Some of the reviews I read beforehand gave this restaurant glowing reviews but sadly it missed the mark for us.

My husband and I had a weeks break in Pickering. Ate in a different restaurant each night. The meal at the Fox & Hounds was the least enjoyable and the most expensive. My husband had three tiny scallops for starter and when he expressed his disappointment at the size of it , the waitress stated that normally it was only two scallops but as they were small they had given three!!My husband’s main course was a Lobster & Crab Mac Cheese. He found the lobster was very tough and chewy. When he spoke about this at the end of meal the waitress said, ‘ Well the lobster was fresh today’, took our payment and scurried away. So in our mind a mediocre meal and staff with no care for customer satisfaction.

Went for the first time ever tonight with my family. We received the warmest of welcomes on arrival and were seated in the beautifully decorated restaurant. We ordered the fruits de mer and I have to say it was one of the most delicious selections of seafood I’ve had. Platefuls of langoustines, lobsters, mussels and crab. So fresh and beautifully cooked. We ate here while on holiday and staying nearby. The pub has plenty of parking and outside space but we ate inside as it was September. The food selection was interesting and when it arrived was tasty. However, I am not sure whether we were just unlucky with our timing or it was normal but the people on duty did seem more interested in catching up with each other than keeping an eye on their customers. As the bar was 'off limits' due to coronavirus restrictions this did make it difficult to order and get additional drinks and the bill.

Absolutely delicious Sunday lunch. Both of us had beef which was served in a lovely Yorkshire pud along with some of the crispiest roasties I’ve ever had! The veg was perfectly cooked not over done and the cauli and leek in white/cheese sauce was great. Not that cheesy - but worked better with the rest of the meal than some greasy attempts in some places. The gravy was probably the best I’ve had anywhere. It looked like melted dark chocolate and was so rich - it was stunning.

Usual friendly welcome, menus, drinks and, meal order quickly taken, very enjoyable shared starter of sea bass with sautéed potatoes, expected main meal to arrive with the same efficiency. Assumed problems in the kitchen as twice, forced to enquire when we might expect service. Whilst my wife’s ,meal was most enjoyable, mine was most disappointing as, the “aged” roast beef had areas of fat plus, having dined here on a number of occasions, know that the chef can produce a “better” Yorkshire Pudding. First time eating at this establishment since the new owners took over.Excellent Sunday lunch with friends who had eaten there from the evening menu the previous week. 2 of our party had the Seabass starter and 1 had the trio of Salmon. All delicious though the Seabass with linguine was a large portion, half of it would have been perfectly adequate. We did wait quite a while with empty plates in front of us before the starters were cleared as it was busy, not too much of a problem for us as we weren’t in a rush & were chatting anyway. For the main course I had the beautifully cooked Belly Pork, one had the Lamb and the other two the Sirloin of Beef....all were proclaimed to be fantastic. After the Seabass & the Belly Pork, I was disappointed that I could not manage a dessert but they looked gorgeous. Good variety on the wine list too. We will certainly be returning. They had run out of GF Fish Pie when I ordered and my disappointment was clearly visible as I changed my order. The waitress came back and said the chef can make you a fish pie but it will have a Trout substitution - I ordered and it was super. The real surprise was the Ploughman's Lunch ordered by one of our table. My wife said "I am glad I didn't order that as there is enough for two!" The rare beef looked perfect to me and the ham looked as though it had fallen rather than carved off the bone. There were to huge chunks of cheese and a Granary baton that added to the beautifully presented plate.

We booked to stay at The Fox and Hounds for a night through a booking site to be sent a message the day of our trip by the hotel to say that they have cancelled our reservation as they didn’t have any vacancies. This is so unprofessional as it is the responsibility of the hotel to inform the booking agents if they have filled their vacancies and in this case they had clearly not and as we had driven to the area before we received the message this caused us problems as we then had to find alternative accommodation elsewhere. The Fox and Hounds had our contact details and could have rang us direct but instead sent it by E-mail of which we did not receive until it was too late. This is very poor management

We were staying at the Fox and Hounds and thought we should try the restaurant. We weren’t disappointed. The menu is predominantly English cuisine, which they do very well. We were planning to have a main and a dessert, but the main courses were so huge that we couldn’t manage a pud. My liver and bacon with mash was tasty and cooked just right. My wife had the RibEye steak and couldn’t finish it, so I was delighted to help out. Again, it was quality meat cooked medium rare as requested. The wine list is quite limited, but good value compared to so many other over priced offerings. The dining room is quite big plus there’s plenty of space to eat in the bar. We came across this excellent country inn on a day out and were very pleased that we did. The décor is lovely, as are all the surroundings. The food was very good too, better than pub grub. The staff were polite and friendly. Will go out of our way to returm

When visiting the North York Moors we always head for the Fox & Hounds for at least one meal. It can get very busy so booking ahead is advisable. The was excellent again and the staff are always friendly and helpful. Probably the best pub meals in the area.

We went here with family members who live nearby. It's a lovely old country inn full of original features such as a wooden settle in the bar that might have been a church pew. We had booked for the restaurant which is comfortably furnished with well spaced tables. We'd heard about the house specialty of the dessert sharing platter, despite that we all had starters because they were unusual and imaginative. On to the main courses; a good selection of locally sourced meats and fish. Then the piece de resistance in my opinion, the puddings! We ordered 2 between the four of us but to be honest one would have been adequate to sample just a taste of the six or seven puddings, mousses, cakes, biscuits and sorbets on offer that night. It's not often we get through 3 courses these days so this was an exception. Service was discrete and could have been a bit more attentive but all in all it's a fine place to go.

Lovely little village pub, good food and pleasant atmosphere, shame about the obnoxious customers and rude waitress who spoilt what would have otherwise been an enjoyable meal for my husband’s 40th Birthday.

My wife and I have just eaten a wonderful evening meal at the Fox&Hounds.; The staff were extremely friendly and attentive and the food was excellent. My wife had the Seafood Platter and I had the Duo of Yorkshire Lamb. Both were superb, and to top it off we shared a lovely Chocolate Torte with white chocolate mousse and griottine cherries. A most memorable meal.

This was recommended to us by reception staff at Forest Holidays. Really good food. The early menu is excellent value. The inn itself is wonderful. The restaurant was busy. Staff were very friendly. Definitely looks a nice place to stay.

We visited twice during our recent family break in the village and received a lovely welcome on both occasions- although have to say our visit on Monday evening was better. This is in part owing to the restricted evening menu on Sunday which was a little disappointing given we knew how good the full menu was, and that it didn’t include a Sunday dinner as an option The food we did get was delicious and I can’t fault it - the homemade chips are delicious, and the pork belly with Asian flavours was also lovely - but can highly recommend the assiette of deserts, the chicken with risotto and the lamb. Would definitely go back.

We all had a ploughman's and they were great. Lovely mix of cheese, meats, bread and salad. Accompanying chips were homemade and beautiful. Service was warm and friendly. Would definitely go back even if it meant going a bit out of the way.

Had a lovely bar lunch, place very clean, staff very helpful and a very homely place to visit if you are in the area. My only small criticism would be there is to much choice deserts where very limited, but that is only a personnel comment and should not prevent anybody from a visit.

We have just enjoyed another great mini-break at the Fox and Hounds. The staff are always welcoming, chatty and helpful, the food is as good as ever with great portions of well prepared and tasty food. The room was clean and well maintained with a powerful shower and was kept gloriously warm even with frosts outside.

Visited here on our way to Helmsley. We booked a table in the lounge bar. We were welcomed at reception and shown through to our table. Quite full but not too noisy. A good atmosphere. Very friendly staff. We ordered a roast beef and a roast lamb. Every aspect excellent. The roasts were tasty and well cooked. Accompanying vegetables similarly well cooked and tasty.

The food and service is amazing here. Very relaxed. I had the guinea fowl and other half had the venison. Both dishes were delicious. Wish i had a starter too but the lovely bread and olives that get put on the table were such a nice touch. I've eaten in other fancy establishments and this is up there with them. You should have another rosette at least.

This was truly one of the best meals I have ever had. We were 5 adults and 2 children for supper. The service was engaging and attentive, and the menu choices suited everyone's tastes. I had two starters and could not get over the wonderful pork and scallops dish. My husband had the lamb, which truly melted in the mouth. The food is truly worth raving about!

We arrived on a cold, rainy day following a trip up on the windy moor. It was very busy but we had a table straight away. Our roasts arrived within 10 minutes and they were delicious. We had the roast beef and trimmings with extra gravy and no fuss or delays. We were very impressed at the service and it left us happy and satisfied. My last visit was a good 17 years ago but we will be sure to return in the not too distant future.

"you enter as a stranger and leave as a friend" said the bar room sign which greeted this weary wanderer who'd taken a wrong turn. I ordered a pint and sure enough before it was pulled I was in conversation with a local man who thenintroduced me to the bar staff! The Sunday Roast was in full swing, the campers were in and out from the pub campsite and the occasional labrador was stealing hearts but nothing seemed to much trouble for the staff. This is a proper country pub, as warm and cosy as a storybook cottage and it's charm appeared to be working on a nearby American couple who's fantasies of an Olde English Country Pub had all just come true. I was on foot and was a few miles from the nearest town but lo and behold one of my new-found companions insisted on giving me a lift... As I exited the bar I glanced the "enter as a stranger and leave as a friend" sign again - this pub does what it says on the tin!

It would look like I’m beating a drum for this pub! But we keep going back because to be honest it is just such good value. Tried their two steaks for £20, choice of rump, sirloin or ribeye, we both went for sirloin, superb, cooked as we wanted, medium rare, salad, mushrooms, peas, onion rings, and a separate bowl of chips. You must try it! I also think you will find it harder to get a better pint of bitter, landlady told me lines are cleaned at the change of every barrel as well as normal cleaning.

Absolutely loved this pub/restaurant. We sat outside with our dog at one of numerous tables and had a delicious Sunday lunch. So much flavour in the meat and the roast potatoes were the best. A bit pricey but worth it for the setting, the food, the service and the landlord brought out some steak pieces for the dogs to share. Amazing.
