Friendly and helpful staff. Hotel quite outdated and in need of refurbishment in places. Staff worked very hard.

We stayed here for 4 nights and the stay was rather disappointing. The bed provided was wobbly leaving us with a bad backs. The hotel staff made promises to address the issue with an alternative room / fixing the bed each time we told them about it, but didn't really do anything about it. The rooms too were poorly maintained, not justifying the price charged. Overall the hotel staff showed no interest in ensuring a pleasant stay for the guests.

Overpriced rooms for substandard beds and facilities! Please avoid! The location of the hotel was good with bus stop right outside, however that’s where the good things stop! This is by far the worst hotel rooms we’ve been to. We woke up the very first night from a bad back, the beds were wobbly and the mattress was super springy! We complained about this to the reception staff, they promised to change the bed and mattress. We came back in the evening only to find that nothing had changed. We spoke to the receptionist and she said she can’t do much about this, the rooms are all booked! We asked them to cancel our booking and refund the money, she said her manager will come in next day and they will talk about it. I didn’t hear anything after! There are no lifts, no telephones in the room. So we had to keep going up and down to speak to their staff about all of this. The showers didn’t have enough water flow. Breakfast was just alright, not really many options for vegetarians! In the end we ended up paying a lot of money for terrible beds and service!

The hotel is really pretty from the outside. The interior is a little older, but that gives it some character. The rooms deserve a facelift. The canvas remained in my hands and the television did not work. The morning lunches are good and I particularly liked the barmaid's service. I advise.

very nice location the neighrbourhood is calm and pleasant. As far as the hotel goes, we went there in summer so we paid almost 200€ for a room that was clearly overpriced. Drill holes in the wall where asome paintings were probably supposed to go. Lamps fixtures were in bad condition and the furniture was in average condition. All this would be ok if it was half the price, but in our cas its not acceptable. Those issues are easy to fix and i dont understand why they weren't at this price point.

The staff are amazing we stayed Friday and Saturday cannot fault the service bar ,restaurant and reception aswel as the late evening reception staff all very accommodating

Service not very good, afternoon tea booked. Tea and coffee brought out long before sandwiches and cakes. Food very good, Service very poor.I was also charged extra £3.50 for soft drink, as one of our party didn't drink either tea or coffee .I would have thought that would have been included. Rather disappointing!

We dined here on Friday night in the private dining area called the library. Wang introduced herself and was very nice. The staff were very polite , knocking on the door before coming in . The food was really nice and the service was quick. Unfortunately when it came to the drinks this was what let them down. We ordered two bottles of Prosecco which were brought unopened to the table and left there. They did not open the bottles or pour the drinks - we had to do that. No ice buckets were provided for the bottles. No one came back to ask if we wanted any more drinks when the Prosecco was finished. I had to go and find Wang to say we’d like to order more. We ordered two bottles of wine and several beers etc. The two wine bottles were brought to the room and left on the table unopened. No ice buckets were provided. We had to open the bottles and pour them ourselves. We were a group of 9 adults that could have stayed on longer and spent a lot more money on alcohol but I was unwilling for my mother and father to spend anymore money there as they were treating us all. Instead we went back to one of our houses and drank three more bottles of wine , several gins and tonics and some baileys. That could have been at least another £100 that the restaurant would have received if they had done the simplest of things of opening the bottles and pouring the drinks! The guy behind the bar didn’t seem to know what he was doing and didn’t know how to make an aperol spritz when asked by a customer. The staff need some training. I can see from a review from April that the poor service was mentioned and this does not appear to have been resolved. It’s a shame because it’s a lovely hotel, with great views and the food was nice but the service let it done. We won’t be bac and I will be telling my friends what it was like too.

Bonne surprise que ce restaurant intégré à un hôtel . Accueil et services prévenants, très customer oriented , une de nos demandes particulières ( avoir du pain ) a été pleinement satisfaite. Plat principal , une truite de mer en l'occurrence etait copieuse une cuisson juste accompagnée de légumes bien cuisinés, le tout très savoureux. Desserts convenables. Nous avons dégusté un chardonnay sud africain honorable . Le tout pour une addition raisonnable (. 84£ pour deux couverts )

Disappointing experience. The food was good, but the service poor, and the service experience was not up to standard. Started off with nobody to greet us when we arrived, so we looked for someone to help, but they didn't seem to know which table we would be sitting at. Water was brought to the table, but no other drinks were offered to us, so I went to the bar myself. We were there for a celebratory lunch and the table that was reserved for us was in a dark corner, whilst window table were provided for people having afternoon teas at lunchtime. On finishing our main course the dirty plates were left in front of us for ages and all the staff had disappeared. When a member of staff did arrive she cleared a table that had just finished their main and offered them the dessert menu. At that we decided not to bother with dessert or coffee. Not a great experience for the price point.

5 of us had afternoon tea here yesterday. Everything was delicious & freshly made.We couldn’t finish everything so we were happy to take home what was left. The staff were very friendly& polite. My husband & l stayed overnight & we’re very happy with our room. We have mobility problems so we’re given ground floor suite which was great. The hotel is spotless& was very comfortable. The heating was on all night which we appreciated in this cold weather.Prices are good.

We've had our breakfast here whilst staying here and can't fault it or the service plenty of choice nicely laid out. We had an evening meal here yes the menu is scaled down due to time of year but the food we had was gorgeous nice sized portions again with great service

Restaurant was nice and was clean. Waiting staff were lovely. Reception staff needed some training. Food was horrid.

Had a lovely afternoon tea with my husband. As he was driving I had his Prosecco as well as my own. It was really nice dry and cold. The sandwiches were freshly made and delicious. The scones with fresh cream and jam were a good size and also fresh. Tea and coffee hot. The service was great and we were asked if everything was ok midway through. Tried our best but we didn’t manage to eat all the cakes. Will definitely return with friends.

We had their afternoon tea with a glass of fizz The place looks great and the staff were very welcoming I would have liked to have been given some choices, but it appears to be a set thing. The sandwiches were a very good egg, a nice ham on toast and a fairly limp smoked salmon bun The cakes were decent and all tasty. The scones were also good I'd like to come back for a meal as sme of this felt like it was good by luck, and was maybe prepped some time in advance

Afternoon tea. Making sandwiches to order is simple, but here at the Braid Hills Hotel they can't be bothered. Our sandwiches were obviously prepared hours ahead and arrived with the bread dried out and the toast limp. Then the cakes; these were the type you buy in sealed packets that last for months - texture-less and over sweet. Scones were dense with a leathery outer layer. (So called) Victoria slices were filled with sweet, synthetic cream that was simply disgusting. . Cupcakes remained untouched and promised profiteroles were missing. A miserable experience. In over 200 Tripadvisor reviews I have only given 2 stars or less a handful of times. This makes 2 stars - JUST!

Advertised on Tastecard App as accepting 2 for 1 bookings, even on Fridays and Saturdays and in December. We rang to book a Sunday lunch in January to be told it was "evenings only". False advertising.

This is the restaurant in the Best Western Braid Hills hotel, about a mile South of Edinburgh town centre. If you're driving there's plenty of off-road parking space at the hotel. The restaurant is nicely decorated, with views out onto the hills. We had breakfast and dinner at the hotel: Breakfast is buffet style and very nice. Dinner was really very good indeed. The staff are friendly and attentive, and if you want to sit and relax after dinner there's a nice lounge bar. Altogether a pleasant experience.

Food was absolutely beautiful and cooked to perfection. Good variety of menu and prompt service. Would definately use again.

As we were staying the attached hotel we decided to have lunch here before venturing into the city centre. The menu is varied and the food freshly cooked and tasty. My portion of pasta was too much even for me!! The dishes are well priced.

We had not booked but the staff ensured we had a nice table, and apologised if the service was slow as they were vey busy. But the service was excellent and the staff were attentive and ensured that we wanted for nothing. The food was excellent and plentiful, try the sharing starter platter big portion with great taste. Highly recommend

Hemos estado dos veces este año y ha sido muy feliz en ambas ocasiones. La comida y el servicio han sido excelentes. 3 course dinner can't say anything bad about.large portions and the service you receive second to none

The restaurant forms part of the Braid Hills Best Western Hotel. Spotlessly clean with friendly, prompt and efficient service. The menu isn't very extensive, but there is still plenty to chose from. I can recommend the Buckstone burgers which were excellent, served with proper chips too, none of the frozen reformed rubbish.

This restaurant is connected to the Best Western hotel and I suspect that most if not all guests that dine here are staying at the hotel.

Me being from India, had a tough time selecting items for our lunch. All items in the menu were typical Scottish and since it was a restaurant attached to a Hotel, I wish they had some Asian menu as well, as the hotel customers could be from any part of the world. Didn't find pizzas or burgers even. Had to finally settle for soup and a starter for lunch. Prices are on a higher side.

El balcón ofrece una vista hermosa y tranquila de Edimburgo, y el interior es muy elegante. El personal era muy profesional y dispuesto, siempre allí cuando necesitábamos algo. Era la primera vez que tuve un té por la tarde y me encantó - deliciosos dulces y saladas! El bollo especialmente era increíble, mi novio dijo que era el mejor que he tenido. También me gustaría decir gracias a la Supervisora de la comida y bebidas, quien amablemente nos dio un mini tour alrededor de la propiedad. Sin duda lo recomiendo y visitar de nuevo!

En conjunto me quedé muy impresionado con el restaurante. El personal era muy amable y educado.

Mi marido pidió el plato de cordero y yo pedimos la carne sirve de frontera (rosa). Le pedí al camarero cómo rosa la carne sería y me informó que tenía que ser bastante raro, como si la carne se torna dan duro. Cuando la carne llegó sin duda era raro (no rosado, fue sin duda un rojo). Esperaba que se funde en la boca, pero después de masticar la licitación la primera pieza durante unos minutos, me disguarded y probado diferentes piezas. Esta pieza era mejor no, así que le pedí a mi marido a probar la carne solo me hablaras un poco más exigente. Estuvo de acuerdo en que era muy duro y gristly trozo de carne y no agradable. Cuando la camarera vino para nuestros platos nos hizo conscientes de lo que nos defraudó y la razón por la que no había comido la comida. Ella pidió disculpas y ofreció algo más, que me ofreció. Nos dijeron que no nos iban a cobrar la comida y también nos dieron una bebida gratis. Por desgracia, cuando nos marchamos del hotel a la mañana siguiente, la comida era parte de nuestra oferta y nos pidieron pagar en su totalidad. No hay descuento.

I am a simple eater so went for my all time favourite a burger. It was good. cant say more than that, Breakfast was OK bacon and sausages could have done with a few more minutes under the grill..

A great meal at a reasonable price, food was well cooked and staff were polite and friendly. We were not rushed and there is a good choice on the menu.

I was lucky enough to visit the attached hotel with work, and ate in the restaurant every night. During my stay, the menu changed and some new options were put on. A very welcome change to the older menu (which was still very nice!) and nice to see more vegetarian options added. Decided to forego a main course and instead had a veggie platter - very filling and really really good flavour combinations. Recommended!

Excellent for dinner, wonderful regional dishes, artfully prepared. the selections included venison, pork, beef, and fish. All were nicely put together with well varied accompaniments. The goat cheese salad was beautiful; the steamed greens were very fresh. The wine list was very nice, and the after dinner coffee was perfect.

Firstly the phone number was not easy to find - so this made booking difficult.Secondly there was not a great choice for a vegetarian.but overall the food was good, the staff were friendly and welcoming and we had an enjoyable lunch

We were residents in the Hotel and due to dreadful weather decided to eat in rather than sample the local eateries. The fish and chips and the flat steak were good value and very well cooked. The staff were without fault and could not have been more helpful. It was a good move eating in !It is not fine dining but good local fare.

Stayed in the hotel many times and seen loads of staff come and go, the refurbishment of the hotel and restaurant is good and it looks lovely in a stunning setting. The food however, is not good. The scotch broth must have been made by a cook who has never hear of it-as it was like no scotch broth we have ever had & we are Scottish! Avoid it!We waited for over an hour for our main courses even though the restaurant only had about a dozen or so tables - what would they do if it was busy heaven knows. The duck eventually came- and it was actually inedible - tough as old boots that Old Tom Morris himself may have left behind - his image adorns the hotel.For guests on DBB as we were - confusion was rife for everyone including the staff - could we use the old Buckstone restaurant in the hotel grounds ??? No-one was sure or even is sure still!! Pity, as it used to be good, but all we keep overhearing from staff And customers is that it is very bad !!! So, unfortunately we endured a second night in this restaurant - waited 50 minutes this time - staff are miserable as ever. Food came and it was actually ok - but then you can't go wrong with steak and chips.... But should it take almost an hour in a quiet restaurant?? No, it shouldn't :) Sad to see it like this. Much better service around - I'm sure staff actually smile in nice restaurants.

First experience of dining out for Christmas dinner. Food was stunning and a lovely setting. Booked again for next year!

Had a lovely dinner in the 1886 Restaurant in The Braid Hills Hotel this week. They launched a new menu, and i haven't eaten there in a few months, so wanted to try it. Their menu selections have really moved towards fine dining, without being pretentious. There are some lovely classy dishes, and amazing combinations, so well worth going, a good selection of new meat & vegetarian dishes, cosmopolitan while retaining Scottish origin!Great service from the restaurant staff, lovely atmosphere for me and my friends, there were 8 of us and we were well looked after :)

Itison Voucher on Friday 18 December with my family. It was the worst afternoon tea. The coffee was cold, sandwiches poor & no butter or clotted cream. I had to ask for both. Also one of the waiters had body odour issues which was overpowering!!!! Even though we were on an offer I would not visit again or recommend.

The food was very good and the wait staff was very attentive to one diner's food allergies which included celiac, lactose, soy and corn. This was very appreciated as an error could cause severe illness. We dined here for dinner twice and breakfast daily. One suggestion is for the restaurant to maintain a supply of pure olive oil. At one stage the restaurant ran out of olive oil and this caused an issue in the preparation of a usual breakfast meal for the diner with allergies. The meals were reasonably priced.

Try a restaurant in town. A truly awful experience with totally incompetent staff who made us wait for over and hour and then got the order wrong.

Excentré du centre ville mais à deux pas du terrain de golf. On y découvrira une cuisine simple et efficace. On retrouve les fondamentaux de la cuisine écossaise, comptez 6 euros l'entrée, 12 le plat et 6 le dessert. Un service très soigné et très agréable. Idéalement situé, on y passe vraiment un bon moment. Parfait également en demi pension pour l'hôtel du même nom.

As an Edinburgh lad , I know all about the Braid Hills. A local landmark for many years. The Scotland rugby team used to stay here pre match. It was always regarded as up market , stylish and up market. So what better spot to take your very elderly mother in law for a Sunday lunch treat. The main restaurant with great views....apart from the hedge...is modernised but still very tasteful. Excellent mid European staff (what else) charming and attentive . But for some bizarre reason they have decided to copy the bistro restaurant menu in here. The Bistro is a totally separate restaurant which serves decent pub grub. The newly titled main restaurant seems to have followed suit So lovely restaurant very average menu. Steak pie, fish and chips burgers, etc. my smoked beetroot and smoked salmon starter was abject. Home made chips great Pie and fish fine. BUT surely a place of this style and ambiance trying to live up to a very famous name must really do better. As I was paying I suppose cheap or meal should have suited, but come on guys! I should point out there might be a superior evening menu, but not apparent. Go to Braid Hills. I was staying at the hotel during a business trip. I read good reviews about there restaurant so gave it a try. The terrace is beautiful and has a nice view. The staff is friendly but they seemed like they have no idea what is going on or they just started working there. I first sat outside and had some starters meanwhile ordered main meal too. After that it got cold and I went inside and was seated after that they did not take care of me at all. I realised that my main meal was not ordered at all. It was not very busy but service was extremely slow!! did not enjoy at all...

Chose to avoid the crush of central Edinburgh during the festival and came here expecting an ok but humdrum meal. We had the best "Bloody Mary's" ever in the lounge bar served by genuinely friendly staff. They have a new outside tabled area with great views. Our dinner was really superb. The menu was short and straightforward but exceptionally tasty. I had chicken liver pate / lamb mint burger/ turkish delight icecream (not too sweet just lovely rose flavour)The dining room has a restful atmosphere and the staff are great. We are gonna make this our new local. Loved it

As locals we are often in the hotel for meals, drinks or snacks. Our visit today was a total shock to the system. Not the usual high standard of service. Brought the wrong order to start with them had to wait for the remainder of it.Barman was complaining about his job on earshot of the customers but his comment about being short staffed seemed to be the main issue.On top of this the buckstone bistro is still closed which must be losing the hotel a lot of business.Here's hoping the Braid Hills Hitel can sort itself out soon.

A Sunday evening with the sun splitting the skies my SO and I went to the Braids as we'd seen it lots driving past and the setting looked ideal, and this proved to be the case.Easter Sunday meant a set menu and we both plumped for the Sirloin roast. This was very tasty but came slathered in Gravy and not the advertised Jus (pedantic perhaps but an important difference) The Yorkshire pudding was MIA as well, though I mentioned this to the waiter and it arrived shortly after.Afters was a cheese board and this was pleasant but not amazing.All in all the fare is pretty standard and a little more thought and application could turn this ideal location into a real hub of the local area with great views backup up by great eats.

Excellent, prompt and friendly service from the staff added to the nice food that was served. Very attentive staff and no waiting for the food. Presentation was good and the food piping hot. What more could you ask for.

Must try harder springs to mind,these days mediocre just doesn't cut it.Very basic menu with few options such as pie,chicken or an 8 oz sirloin.3 choices of red wine a bit limited but prices reasonable and the Rioja we had was acceptable.

I like the food and staff but disliked the piped music. Also I had caesar salad both evening and on the second evening it was half the size of the first!

We had booked for 1pm lunch and were a little early therefore had a seat in the lounge and a refreshment before shown a table at the window. Pity the day was stormy as it is a magnificient view overlooking the park etc.However, Heather the waitress took great care of us and our orders were taken quickly. For starters I chose the fishcake with tartare sauce and salad. My husband The Scottish smoked salmon timbale with winter leaves. Both were polished off!!For the main my husband had the fillet of Scottish salmon crushed with new potatoes ., broccoli and white sauce.I had the Belhaven beer battered North Sea Haddock with hand made chips, hiome made tartar sauce, garden peas and lempn. The plate was huge and the dog was in luck again!!For dessert I had three scoops of Taylors of Biggar ice cream but stuck to vanilla although a choice of strawberry,chocolate,butterscotch and turkish delight.My husband had Chocolate praline truffle with berry coulis.We took our time and again went back to the lounge for coffee ( I had a latte) and my usual liquer. Unfortunately my husband did not drink at all - perhaps I should have taken my turn but the service was attentive, Heather very chatty and a most enjoyable meal.The dog would not walk in the weather therefore we went on to my sister and brother-in-law for a catch up who are not far from the Braids.We shall be back again of course!!! ThANKS TO ALL

Although the dinner menu was limited and unchanging, the quality was excellent, as was the full range breakfast they served.

We had a very pleasant supper here. The choice of food was good and everything we had was very tasty.

We ate in our room and this worked very well. No grumbles, food arrived hot and 15 minutes later the desserts arrived. Very efficient.

The service and the food was great. We were surprised as usually we do not eat in the hotels we stay at. Top notch!

This has become one of my favourite restaurants. The food quality is impeccable and presented beautifully.

Booked aunt's 95th birthday. New owners have spent on public area refurb. Bedrooms next. Service in restaurant very good. New areas tastefully decorated. New verandah a offer fantastic views over Edinburgh. Only fog got in way. Food excellent - roast beef meltiferous!Great value and service.

We had booked the theatre for 7.30 on Monday night so were pleased to see that the Braid Hills were offering an itison deal for a starter and main course with a small glass of wine for two for £19 from their set menu. I booked it thinking that it would make an ideal start to the evening. Before going I checked their menu on-line and was pleased to see that there was an excellent selection of starters and mains to choose from. Imagine my surprise when we turned up and were handed a small printed card (obviously for voucher holders) with a very limited choice of 3 starters (soup, liver pate or grilled goats cheese) and 5 mains (steak and shallot pie, steak mince burger, grilled rib eye steak at a £5 supplement, goats cheese salad or mushroom risotto. As neither of us like red meat or goats cheese this cut down our options quite drastically. My wife chose the soup and risotto and I chose the pate and steak and shallot pie. I must say that I was not impressed with the pie as the gravy was very runny and came with mashed potato green beans and salad??? Would have preferred to have had more choice. Why no chicken or fish? On a more positive note, the refurbishment had been tastefully done and the staff were very pleasant but don't expect too much if you're going there with an itison voucher

On business so needed a hearty meal to get me through the day. I knew I was not going to have time to have lunch for went for the full Scottish breakfast. There are some items you make not like (black pudding) but everything else tasted great!

Food, service and staff were absolutely fantastic. Sixteen of us sat down to dinner and nothing was too much trouble for the staff. Highly recommended.

We come here once a year as my elderly uncle likes it. It's all been refurbished since last year, décor is very tasteful. Food however was not up to its usual standard. I chose the Chicken stuffed with Haggis in a Drambuie Sauce. I had to send it back, the chicken was tough and stringy :(. I then chose the Butternut Squash Risotto which turned out to be disappointing too, far too much cheese in it :(. The two waiters did their best, but the chef needs to relook the menu in my opinion. My uncle had Fish and Chips, he said the fish was lovely, but his "chips" were potato wedges. Disappointing. Bill for 4 of us was GBP61.00

Couldn't fault the staff, service or food quality....went to bed very full...and the buffet breakfast was a great start to the day

Ths reastaurant was full on the Monday night and the service a little slow but I stayed three nights ant the Tuseday and Wednesday were fine

Delicious menu with local Scottish dishes. I had the haggis, neeps & tatties, my other half a beautifully cooked steak he's still raving about! Great food at a very reasonable price!!!

Liked Very speedy and excellent. Beautifully presented. I was late checking in and ordered a sandwich and melon. It was so good I took a picture of itDislike nothing

We had dinner here a few times. The food was well prepared and good value for mony. The service was friendly and professional.

Food was average/good however service was sometimes quite slow even when it did not appear to be very busy.

A cold day in Auld Reekie so we thought we would go to the Braid Hills Bistro ...a frequent eating place for us....shut doors...refurbishment disappointed BUT then we thought why not let's go to the Bar in Hotel....we were glad ...comfy seats friendly waiters yummy food excellent service brilliant value for money we will return!!

We've been here a few times before as my Uncle likes his fish and chips there. He enjoyed his meal, however, the steak pie we had was insipid and very bland. Served with a smattering of frozen peas and a jacket potato that tasted like it had been microwaved about a week ago :(. Cost for 4 of us (one only had a starter) with no alcoholic drinks was GBP40.00. Despite asking for WiFi connection and password, couldnt connect to that. "It's very temperamental" said the waiter. Hmmm...

We were on a dinner bed & breakfast deal and enjoyed a lovely 3 course meal. There was plenty of choice. The staff were very friendly. Excellent value for money.

The food was very good and the view was super to enjoy your food. The staff were realy cheerfull.The price was about average as other places we have been to.
