Red Lion Wilstead in Bedford

Camarera muy acogedora e informativa, una verdadera pena sobre todo lo demás! Habiendo oído que nuestro lugar favorito para el almuerzo del domingo había reabierto después de ser renovado reservamos esperando grandes cosas. La dueña/propietario nos ignoró totalmente mientras esperábamos nuestra mesa, por suerte la camarera fue educada y amable. El precio era bueno para el almuerzo del domingo, sin embargo, la comida que llegó estaba tan lejos del estándar anterior que nos preguntamos si habíamos venido al mismo lugar. La carne de res era gris, no rosada y apenas tenía sabor, el pavo parecía como si fuera un porro prensado ya que era la broca final y se podía ver el patrón del envase, no había salsa de arándanos ni manzana para acompañar al pavo o gammon. Algunas de las patatas asadas estaban crujientes y cocinadas correctamente, otras no. Los pudines Yorkshire fueron comprados en la tienda en lugar de los extremadamente grandes y sabrosos que disfrutamos anteriormente. Lamentablemente las verduras que antes se habían cocinado a la perfección no eran tan buenas: demasiados guisantes sobrecocidos y col casi transparente. El gammon, puré de patatas, zanahorias y salsa estaban bien. ADVERTENCIA - no había precio para los pudines en el menú y nos cobraron £ 8 por un pastel de chocolate fudge que era pasable aunque el helado era muy blanco y una consistencia extremadamente extraña, casi como merengue cruzado con no sé qué; el crumble de manzana era como fruta de una lata. Fue un shock completo encontrar que en la factura cada postre era de £ 8, que era más caro que los entrantes y extremadamente mala relación calidad-precio. Sugerí que el costo de los postres se agregara al menú, aunque en retrospectiva debería haber pedido que se eliminaran de la factura. En resumen, una completa decepción de lo que había sido anteriormente nuestro lugar favorito de almuerzo de domingo y uno que recomendamos a todos.

CAUTION!!! Dont even bother entering!! If I could give 0 stars I would. Doesn't even deserve a 1. The most unwelcoming and rude place I have ever stepped into. 2 massive signs outside stating that they serve food all day everyday. Went in, got stared at and had to worm our way through people who couldn't be bothered to move. Asked about food to just be rudely judged and told don't do food then walked away. Was clearly just a place for the staff and their friends.

My wife ordered me a shandy, not knowing that there is a difference between a beer shandy and a lager shandy nor did I… anyhow I had a sip of the beer shandy that was completely flat so I went to the bar, I explained that it was not what I expected and instead of explaining to me in a respectful manner that there is a difference between a beer shandy and a lager shandy and that the beer shandy is supposed to be flat, the bar tender/manager simply said to me that it is a beer shandy and that’s what we’ve bordered, he was very demeaning and rude, also discussed the fact that we ordered a beer shandy and that we are basically stupid with other patrons sitting at the bar… it was extremely embarrassing. Also just need to mention that we are not British and has not been in the UK for long so we do not know all the ins and outs! Much prefer the Woolpack!!!

Is much smaller than I thought it would be. Very friendly staff and locals. You can bring in local takeaway food which is a bonus as they don't have a kitchen. Won't recommend visiting when sports are on as it does get noisy however when there's no sports, it looks to be a 4/5 pub. They should update their Google page on phone number, space available and update pictures as large groups of 5+ may not fit in.

The landlady asked me to take my friendly (and quite quite) cockapoo off the stool he was sitting on. I thought this to be a fair enough request, until I noticed she was sitting at the bar wearing no shoes and socks herself! In her own establishment! This used to be a friendly country pub under the precious owners.

Amazing pub, had a wake here after the funeral and was an amazing cheer up.

We were visiting Wilstead to see a family member in a local community show and popped in to grab some dinner first after searching on TA for some ideas. When we walked in there were four blokes at the bar and a landlady chatting. We asked the landlady if we could eat and she told us they don't do food. Odd as there's a big sign outside saying food all day! We asked if there was anywhere else we could eat and the men gave us some suggestions but the lady said nothing. She was rude but at least the locals were friendly.

Pub is Ok, Beer seems good from what I could tell as did not try everything. That's where it stops.. Landlady is a obnoxious creature, that will only talk to her friends and the Landlord is to happy to sit there telling you about his marriage issues. Quirky is another discription.

Excellent food, friendly service nice place to eat and drink

Nice, clean, consistent pub. Could only be improved by stocking Thatchers cider in my opinion.

Today it was the turn of the Red Lion in Wilsead to have us check them out. A pleasent, if not your quintessential pub but was first licensed in 1671 to Grace Freeland. Had a refreshing John Smith and a cool Fosters. Fantastic hanging baskets and a good ambiance.

Great night, everyone was really friendly.

Right to begin. Food was poorly cooked. Fish was served in oil older than my grandad. We complained and the manager acted very juvenile with attitude refusing to hear the complaint. He was telling is how we should be complaining. Outrageous isn't. How would you feel if this happened to you. It felt like i could not convey my complaint at all. Chips were not as salty as the managers attitude. Outrageous behavior and attitude

Awfull service very rude Manager beside he was aproched twice about the way he handle the complaint should you want to be well served and looked after just avoid . Manner you grown with so is not something you pick and I guarantee neither the voice or the attitude are kept to a professional level . Good luck with keeoing up the business with this sort of attitude

We had 2 steak meals and a bottle wine very pleased with the way we was treated and the food was excellent.

Great food, great hospitality and a nice experience for simple well cooked food

Visited here on a Tuesday night. Bar was quiet but the service was great! Lady behind the bar - didn’t get her name - was very friendly and welcoming. The food was great, we had the chicken burger, and the goujons. The home cut triple-cooked chips were fantastic!! Specials board was really varied as well, lots of good options. Great experience, nice little beer garden too!

We had visited this pub before and the food was good but now it is under new management we decided to give it a try and we are pleased that we did because the food was excellent it is all homemade by the Chef. The pub is very welcoming and the staff friendly, we will definitely go there again

Our first visit for an evening meal and the pie is fabulous. I don't usually order a pie as they are usually disappointing, however these were delicious, lots of filling, crisp pastry and gravy on the side. The food is freshly prepared by Gary and served piping hot. Premises are clean and warm and Mary who has recently taken over the pub was very welcoming and friendly. We thoroughly recommend and would definitely visit again.

Had a lovely couple of Roast beef dinners our son had Rogan Josh and Ellie had a home made burger all cooked fresh great food and great service highly recommended definitely will be back

This place is a hidden gem, it serves great ales and proper pub grub, I would recommend to anybody. Excellent service big portions and very nicely put together. The cleanliness of the place is second to none. Will definitely be returning soon and more often.

Came here today and ordered Aberdeen Angus Burger with Chips and I was shocked how poor it was. Staff were lovely and welcomed us in and the menu didn’t have option for a daytime menu but nether the less I was happy with the burger option they had. It took around 30 minutes to arrive and as soon as it came it didn’t look very appealing. The chips were okay but the burger didn’t have any salad inside and literally just was a burger with cheese. The burger itself was very dry. Quite disappointed because I had high hopes considering the other reviews.

Great to find somewhere that has pie and mash like you find in London, in Bedford! Friendly and welcoming staff but the atmosphere in the pub felt odd because it was so quiet, there was no music on which meant we were sat eating with a silent background which felt odd. The food is standard pub grub, a little overpriced but we would return, hopefully when it’s busier so it’s not so quiet.

A few of us have had lunch there during the good summer months, We all though the food was really good! We would come back as the service was also good, I and friends recommed the Red Lion. If you are passing through Wilstead then try the Red Lion!!

A friendly village pub with great pub food. We came across this lovely place by chance (after a diversion from A6). We were greeted with a smile and served promptly. After ordering we didn’t wait long for the food to arrive. And the food was cooked perfectly, steaks exactly as ordered. The pub itself is spotless (as well as the toilets) We will definitely be returning and would certainly recommend to others. Well worth a visit.

Split into two, with a bar on one side and restaurant on the other, it's a traditional style pub but feels more like a 'locals' place than a special occasion restaurant. The bar man was really friendly though and helped put initial fears at ease and sport was being shown on the TVs to create a decent enough atmosphere. The toilets are functional and there's not a huge amount of seating but with the roaming dog it felt authentic! Don't let any initial reservations stop you staying, it's actually not too bad.

Food was of a good standard and we were welcomed and looked after well. Since we were the only two people eating lunch it was very quiet and difficult to judge the atmosphere. Toilets were very clean and refreshed and the general decor was nice and very tidy. Very good choice of beers and well maintained

Great pub!! Best of both worlds. Offers delicious food at reasonable prices and a great atmosphere. The owners and staff are really friendly and always willing to please. Also has wheelchair access as well as a separate disabled toilet. Couldn’t be happier with my experience.. Greg

The pub has had a re-vamp, new carpets, tables, chairs etc Same staff, menu changed. Child's main came out with dip missing and one less of the chicken nuggets which I had to ask for. Then mine came out without any onion ring again I had to ask for them. Pub was clean and tidy and a nice area to eat.

After leading worship at the local Methodist Church we thought we'd treat ourselves to Sunday lunch. We'd already booked a table but it was good to be greeted in a warm and friendly fashion. We both chose the Sunday roast, very traditional and very tasty. Apple pie and custard for desert. The menu isn't extensive and doesn't pretend to be, but the food is very good. A very friendly atmosphere in a real village pub. We'll be there again when next in the area.

Good local pub. Tasty traditional food. We arrived Saturday afternoon, a party of 9 (kids and adults), and had a lovely time. Local footie team came in after the match plus a couple of family groups. Looks like a popular place.

Arrived found a table and went to order was kept waiting for at least 5 minutes before being seen, apart from that small fail.

This was a quiet Tuesday evening and we were the only customers dining. I had the Lamb Shank which I can say was the best one I've ever had. The gravy is to die for. I followed this up Treacle Sponge and custard. My fellow diners were equally impressed, one having the Salmon, the other the Sausage and Mash. The food is good value and the staff were helpful and friendly. I would certainly dine here again.

We have visited the pub, which is local to us, a few times for drinks. A first for us on Sunday for food. I had the roast and my husband had scampi. Both meals were very good, very tasty and piping hot! Well presented, too. The service was excellent, and the landlord very attentive. We would definitely recommend The Red Lion and will certainly be back to eat there again soon.

I live just a few moments from this fine establishment and each time I have gone there for food have been greeted by a friendly, homely atmosphere, attentive staff and hands down the best pub food I've ever had.

A relaxing place to enjoy a family meal. We all just had the main meal and the pies were delicious, the steak cooked to perfection and the lamb shank was tender and tasty. The staff were friendly and really seemed to care that we'd enjoyed our meals. Such a pleasant change after the indifference shown by some of the chain restaurants.

Although local to us, this is the first time we have ventured there for dinner. The warm friendly service and the standard of the food was exceptional. The downside is it's local, which means we shall be back often. Would recommend if you like old fashioned good old pub grub. Which I do. Thank you and see you again soon.

Called in late Sunday afternoon, wife choose the roast of the day (pork) while I chose from the main menu. Good basic pub grub, large portions, inexpensive - all to the good so far.

On the way home out of London decided to stop for very late lunch or early dinner, so whilst sat in traffic good old google..pubs in Bedfordshire so Red Lion came up with good reviews, so why not !

Wow! Tonight we were treated absolutely fantastically by the man who runs this place & his staff. My first family birthday since leaving uk at aged 7. The food was great and served promptly to us and the steak as ordered rare actually came perfectly cooked very nice it's the first good steak we've had in three months traveling uk, Ireland & Amsterdam!! Well done to everyone who made me feel extra special. ❤️❤️

We don't know the area but Sunday roast was advertised on the board outside. We were welcomed at the bar and were pleasantly surprised by the food. A traditional roast with beef and lovely roast potatoes; the vegetables were served in a separate dish accompanied with a large gravy boat. Lovely and hot. Very friendly service. I had forgotten what a Sunday lunch at a pub should be like. Will return.

We called in at The Red Lion on a Sunday afternoon not expecting to find lunch still being served. We were very pleased to find tables available and a very warm welcome from the staff.

Went to have Sunday roast/early dinner after birds of prey experience nearby. We were a group of 6. Simple pub food menu. I ordered braised lamb and it was yummy. Cooked perfectly, so soft! Friends had Pies (steak & mushroom and chicken & leek) tasted lovely too. Burger seemed a little dry. Its a very cute & cosy pub with parking & garden space. Safe for kids to be in the garden on their own as it has a fence, so they can't really go out of the garden easily.

We had another meal at The Red Lion and were not disappointed, service was excellent, staff friendly and helpful, and most important the food once again met all our expectations. The IPA is nectar and the white wine nicely chilled. Well done The Red Lion. J and D

So nice to find a real pub that serves really nice food thats not just out of the freezer then microwaved. Good portion for reasonable money, served hot. Impressed that there wasn't the usual great long list of choices that you tend to get in plastic pubs. Only disappointment was that fish & chips was off the menu, it is still shown on the pubs web site menu. Tut tut. Good atmosphere and very friendly staff. Will be going again when I am next in that part of the world.

We were looking for a pub for a meal Fathers Day evening just outside Bedford, found this pub on the internet. Phoned late afternoon spoke to the manager (very friendly) and booked. Meal was a good value plate of food...hot tasty and well cooked.

This restaurant/pub is what it is the food is consistent. getting drink from bar can take a while. Good all round experience apart from. When it is really busy instead of telling you they are full or asking/assigning you a table when someone is finished. they let people walk around you and even stand next to you waiting for you to finish. So lots of people watching you eat. As soon as you pick your coat up someone will be in your seat.

We like it here! They serve an excellent pint, show live sport in one bar which has a pool table and darts....and they serve really good food. This is served in the lounge bar, but is probably available in both. The fish and chips; scampi and vegetarian meals can be recommended,but the star attraction has to be the A.Cooke's "Pie,mash and liquor"!! One member of the family finds this dish irresistible! Three times in a row! All meals arrive quickly and are piping hot. They do have a lot of other choices and cater for children. The garden is child-friendly too.

We was in the area for the day and got recommended the pub for a bite to eat. Very pleased with food and service. Would like to revisit one day maybe for a meal.

We had a really tasty lunch at the Red Lion, brilliant value too! The menu has had all the best pub classics, and everything we tried was done really well. There was a really friendly atmosphere, with the landlord chatting to us but not being overly intrusive. I think the pub has been redecorated recently because it looked very smart, but it still felt really cosy. We now want to find another excuse to be in Wilstead!

We have lived within 4 miles of the Red Lion for 44 years and did not realise they served food. A friend recently enjoyed a meal there and we suggested to other friends we should try it ourselves. Very friendly Landlord who made us very welcome and made great effort to make our first visit enjoyable. His regulars were watching an England soccer match but they also greeted us strangers with good humour and respect - an overall great atmosphere! Food excellent, piping hot and generous helpings. Traditional homemade pies grabbed all four of us and despite being full, we were tempted by a sweet plus teas and coffees and were introduced to the Landlords friendly Bulldogs, who were only allowed in when food was cleared. Homely, welcoming and thoroughly recommended - we shall return!!

Me and my partner came here for dinner. They manage to make a normal pub menu seem like really posh restaurant food!! Food is excellent and staff are nice.

We popped in for a quick bite to eat and were served a feast! Excellent value for money and really friendly service. We will definitely be going back!

What a lovely village pub, we were made to feel very welcome. Good pub food at very reasonable prices. Plenty to choose from. I had the good old traditional pie and mash and very good it was too. My husband had a steak which he also enjoyed. They do all sorts from pies to ribs and they also have a board of specials. I would defiantly recommend you try it. I doubt you would find a meal/ lunch out any cheaper than this. Give it a go you won't regret it
