I want to be honest and say everything was perfect, in which the food was more than perfect…. but unfortunately there is lack of communication with managers, staff & customer care. The food was absolutely amazing, well done to the chefs and kitchen staff. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ The restaurant was of high standard and very spacious and overall relaxing. Tables are spread out perfectly. 👍 The only down side was that the assistant manager took our order, then disappeared didn’t ask about any allergies so I had to ask a waitress to check with the kitchen for nuts. Before ordering any food we ordered Oysters and the wine whilst we looked over the menu. After looking over the menu (10-15mins later) we then decided to ordered the starters and mains… within 5 mins the oysters and starters all came out together 😬 mentioned to the young waiter that we wanted the oysters first he just grunted and put all the plates down on the table. So that was that 😬 so the warm scallop starter went cold whilst we ate the oysters. It seemed that there’s no organisation or consistency of who is doing what, we didn’t have the same waitress/waiter it was a free for all. No- one asked if the meals were ok, which to be honest you would expect one of the restaurant managers that are hanging around to approach the customers and ask if everything was okay. I have mention the above to the restaurant manager afterwards - so hopefully they get organised and up their customer care because the food was absolutely amazing. Overall we would come back as the food was superb ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

This place should be closed for its racism against Palestinian people I had one of the most disappointing and offensive experiences . The staff’s behavior was blatantly discriminatory towards Palestinians. When I identified my background during a casual conversation, their demeanor changed entirely, treating me with disdain while other customers received polite and attentive service. This kind of racism is not just hurtful but unacceptable in any setting. It’s disheartening that in 2024, such attitudes still exist, especially in a place meant to bring people together over food. I strongly urge the management to address these issues through proper staff training and accountability. Until they take action, I will not return, and I encourage others to think twice before supporting this establishment.”

I visited the restaurant having booked and noted my gluten allergy. On the day of the lunch I was given a menu that had no GF indications against the meals. I asked the waitress for advice on the starters and mains that were suitable for me. After checking she returned to point out that the only starter I could have was the whipped goats cheese with the bread removed. I ended up eating two scoops of goats cheese with no additional gluten free bread. Again the waitress advised that the only main was the risotto that arrived with even more goats cheese. There were not desserts available so the waitress said that there was a panecotta on the evening menu that was gluten free. Not my favourite but better than nothing, I advised of m allergy both beforehand and as soon as the menus arrived. I was alarmed that there were not GF indications on the menu and that there were not choices at all just one option or nothing it appeared. No I won’t be going back as I am not sure that allergies are properly considered or given any thought on the menu.

Great looking building & surroundings, staff appeared friendly and helpful. 3 of us had the 'triple cooked chips' with our meals, very dissapointed as more like 3 day old chips, very tuff and more like the leftovers! I never normally leave these but had to. Should have said something earlier but didn't want to make a scene and spoil a family reunion. When we did finally mention when the plates were collected, waitress said she would go and see the chef - never saw her again and no reduction of bill offered! Lesson learnt, don't accept any sub standard food! Spoiled our meal so unfortunately won't be going back any time soon.

Disappointing today (as the ambiance & general service seemed good) - that when one of our Sunday dinners (roast lamb) was served ice cold … no apology. Seemed inconsequential. Vegis on the other 3 dinners (beef) also served cold. A real let down for a special occasion.

Visited for my wife’s birthday as this restaurant is quite expensive but very nice. Theres a big car park, there’s loads of places to sit in the bar and the restaurant is tidy and clean. Staff were friendly and helpful and they had put a birthday card on the table. Good low alcohol beer selection The food was delicious and attractively presented. My wife had the pigeon and I had the octopus which was a bit over cooked and tasters more like a bratwurst but surprisingly, with the other parts of the dish, tasted really good . We both had venison which was well cooked and good portion of new potatoes and courgette. My wife had the strawberry cheesecake and I had the peach Melba which was an interesting twist on the old favourite with warm peach slices, both dishes were tasty. My wife was given a plate with happy birthday on it with some brownie pieces and fruit and cream which was almost a sweet in itself. Not unique to Red Lion but why do restaurants take so long to bring the card machine? Will go again for another special occasion.

Staying in the hotel for two rain drenched autumnal nights allowed us to eat both evenings in this beautiful and stylish We settled in to comfy armchairs in front of one of the many lit fires, where pre dinner drinks were served to us. We chose perfectly chilled Champagne and a delicious bottle of Malbec from the extensive wine list. (Our only suggestion would be that guests are offered a small dish of complimentary nuts or similar to accompany the drinks.) The restaurant has a very relaxed, friendly and unpretentious atmosphere and the menu offers appealing choices using local fresh and seasonal ingredients. Meals are beautifully presented and are delicious too. A special mention must go to the superb staff. All are attentive, polite, professional and friendly.

I’m saddened to be leaving this review, but I feel it might help future customers . Sunday Lunch £27 Small portions, only one slice of roast beef, three tiny hard roast potatoes, minimal vegetables & a Yorkshire pudding. Served Luke warm. Dessert. £9 Three of our party had crumble. Unfortunately it wasn’t edible as the topping was rock hard, nothing like you expect a crumble to look like. To be fair the waitress said that the kitchen agreed so therefore we were not charged. Come on Red Lion, you can do better!!

I don’t recommend if you’re coeliac / gluten free. I had food here yesterday after a friend’s wedding and was assured the Risotto would be OK, I also reminded the waitress that it needed to be GF. I ate what I thought was a safe alternative but was actually sourdough wafers on top. Soon after I had to leave the wedding party because I was violently sick. I hope this review helps the restaurant change their menu to include GF / GFO labels and that they make sure it’s taken more seriously. We didn’t receive a call back about our complaint.

We went to Red Lion a few weeks ago for lunch and loved it so booked for my husband’s birthday last night. We had an amazing meal, service was fantastic, food was top class, everything about it was great. Will definitely go back. If you decide to go at lunchtime, they get very busy and service can be slow, but worth the wait, so don’t go if you are rushing somewhere afterwards, wait until you have the time to enjoy the experience. Evening time seems less busy. The staff are excellent and make you feel very welcome. This might be my new favourite restaurant.

We have lived in the area for about a year and a half now, and have only just discovered this absolute gem of a restaurant. Absolutely wonderful food, the finest steak I've had in sometime, preceeded by the katsu crab which was delicious. Beautiful surroundings, welcoming and friendly staff, and an enormous wine list! Can not wait to pop up for a drink in the Summer so we can take in the views.

Mrs. Pubtesterx and I came here with our two kids and her parents for a birthday treat and we weren't disappointed. Excellent attentive service. I had the blade of beef for my main and it just melted in the mouth. Really well presented too. The atmosphere is great as well. I didn't have a desert but Mrs. Pubtesterx said they were beautiful. I recommend getting extra vegetables as the food is quality over quantity. If I could offer any constructive feedback I would say, lose the large low lamp shades in the middle of the tables. They obstruct your view to your party. An easy 5 stars. It's pricey and we couldn't dine here on a regular basis but for a treat you can't go wrong.

I live locally and a friend had suggested meeting here for lunch, as it’s roughly a halfway point for us. Given that I was last here around forty years ago, when I’d come with my family for Christmas Day lunch, I wondered what changes would have taken place whilst my back was turned! As it turned out, I barely recognised the place but it was all for the good. The dining room is lovely and bright, with nice decor as well as comfortable booth-style seating which gives a bit of privacy. The toilet was spotlessly clean and there was ample toilet tissue, hand wash and disposable paper hand towels. Our meals were good; fish, chips and mushy peas for my friend whilst I opted for the gammon which was served with two eggs and, at my request, salad rather than chips. However, although the gammon was thick, lean and very tasty, the portion size of the salad was extremely small, almost verging on miserly. Also, I was slightly disappointed that they don’t sell Fever-Tree tonic, although I was told that they had another premium tonic water. Despite the little moans, we had an enjoyable meal and I’m sure I’ll return in the not too distant future.

Having this on our doorstep used to be something we were really proud of but it's evident this establishment is now only interested in diners and hotel residents. They have now enforced a tap room and rather bizarrely, table service for drinkers. The charm of the Red Lion was the bar area with the large sofa and chairs and 'library'. This area is reserved for diners only now. Don't quite understand the logic for it other than they now no longer want drinkers only. We were frequent regulars, found the space a safe environment with a new born, somewhere lovely to host visiting friends and family, always a nice selection of drinks and helpful staff. Unfortunately, they have lost their way. Those visiting for just drinks don't want to be shoved around the corner to be made to feel that they're out of the way. The tap room is nice enough, a little cramped in areas and I know effort has been made to ensure it ties in with the bar area but quite frankly, shouldn't it be the customers choice where they wish to sit? Why do those dining need two designated area's to sit? Why do they need the restaurant AND the bar area? Take it back to how it was, let drinkers visit and purchase their drinks at the bar and sit where they please (obviously not in the actual restaurant) The investment in this place must have been huge in recent years, don't let it go to waste by carrying on with these silly rules. Please also do not reply to this review with the same lack of acknowledgement of the issue you have on other posts. I'm writing to you trying to help, not complain. As a regular who attended frequently and also dined occasionally, I won't be returning until these issues are resolved. All the best,

We've come to love eating here but each time we go the service gets worse. The food is excellent and the staff friendly, but it's clear they are either struggling for staff or just not employing enough of them. If you pay top prices, which you do here, you expect top service. repeatedly asking for our drinks, our wine arriving half way through the meal and then hand waving in the restaurant to get service or even basics like getting our table cleared is not good. It's a shame, as I said we really loved the place and the food is fantastic, but it's expensive, which I don't mind if the service matches, at the moment it doesn't. I've had similar feedback from others who have been recently. Get it sorted or eventually wonder why no one's coming anymore!

We had been visiting Matlock and ended up on a road in the middle of nowhere, when we decided we wanted something to eat. I searched for pubs on the map and were pleasantly surprised to find the Red Lion within half a mile. On entering we found a warm and cosy bar and a very pleasant restaurant. The staff were friendly and the food was excellent. We enjoyed the lamb rump, cooked to perfection, and the apple and blackcurrant crumble was delicious, although we were a bit disappointed that they’d run out of sticky toffee pudding! It was quite pricy, but not unreasonable for the quality of food and surroundings. The only disappointment was that we’d been told to leave our coats where we’d been sitting in the bar and they would be hung up for us. We came back to find my coat still on the chair. Nothing valuable in it, luckily, and it hadn’t been touched, but still not what we were told would happen. Other than that, an excellent find, and we’re considering coming to stay in the future.

Classy, calm, & so much better than most of its local competition, we really rated this place. Where else could you sit warm & snug on a cold & wet January day looking towards a moody Beeley Moor whilst comfortably enjoying great food? Easy to book, we decided to have a last lunch out before returning to work. So glad we did. The team were friendly & just attentive enough. The place is comfortably cool. The food was above market but very much worth it! Can recommend the Haddock & chips and the Chocolate& cherry torte. It's rare that I wouldn't finish either course and would be both satisfied & okay about it. We'll definitely be back!

We booked the 8 course taster menu for £100pp on NYE. Unfortunately the food just did not match the price. It was not worth that amount of money. It was actually 6 courses with a piece of bread and canapés. We stayed at the peak edge hotel and we also ordered breakfast to our room which was delivered with no cutlery so we had to wait as our breakfast got cold. We then realised they’d forgotten the sauce, the toast & the pastries. At this point we cut our losses. Both our hot drinks were also cold. To top things off we were charged £5 to have a beer brought to our room on the evening. If we’d have known we wouldn’t have had it delivered. We expected this to be included in a high priced hotel. I hate leaving a bad review but we really wanted to treat ourselves for NYE and we spent a lot of money and just feel disappointed.

After a day's walking in the area my Wife and I decided to call in for lunch and a drink. We had recently left the Red Lion after being given menus to look at but despite waiting and waiting staff failed to take an order. Thinking that this was probably a "one off" we called in today. Sadly we experienced the same issue. We were given menus and told that someone would return to take our order. Once again we waited and waited and no one came. Staff served others who came in after us while we were ignored. Therefore we left and we will not return but will visit other establishments that care for their customers and want their business. The staff member who served us was the same on both occasions, so this may be an issue with that person although several other members of staff ignored us too. It's a shame because we have enjoyed food and drink on other occasions for many years but I refuse to return to a business that treats its customers with such contempt.

Booked a table for elderly Dad's birthday. Loud music blaring out of a speaker directly above our table. We asked if the music could be turned off but the waitress said no but she would turn it down. That was pointless because the music couldn't then be discerned above the chatter and was just an annoying noise. Mushroom soup tasted very strange and had oil floating on it. Prawn cocktail was in a glass so tall that my elderly mother couldn't reach into it and had to empty the contents onto a plate. 3 of us had the Christmas menu. Roast potatoes were grey and so hard that we couldn't get a knife into them. We suspected they had been left over from a previous day and microwaved. Brussel sprouts were literaly raw and we couldn't get a fork into them. We asked if the chef could come and speak to us but were told that was not possible. The food is overpriced but this could be forgiven if it were properly prepared because the venue is nicely turned out. Although 3 out of 4 mains were reduced in price after we complained, the whole experience was unpleasant and spoiled our special day. We would certainly not return and would not recommend.

We came just for drinks and we’re not allowed to sit in the main bar with the beautiful fire and Christmas decorations despite it being empty and we’re asked to sit in the tap room which is not as comfortable. We were told that the main bar/library was being kept free for restaurant guests, I understand the need for a smooth restaurant service but surely not all of the tables need to be available all the time. We had a wine and pint of lager for £16, I’m not paying those prices to not sit in the lovely area where customers used to be welcome. I love this place, it’s beautiful so it’s a real shame!!

Very disappointing evening. Food served tasted nice but was cold. Second meal came back in the same and half the amount and no attempt to provide fresh sides. My husband and I ended up eating our meals separately as a result. The bill was incorrect, charged us for a bottle of wine we didn’t have and apart from one waitress who was very kind, the service was poor. Compensation for a poor evening on my husbands birthday was inadequate. I doubt we will return.

Living in Calow for the last 6 years this pub has continued to disappoint, Landlords coming and going, inconsistent opening times and food being served/not being served. I'm not sure what made me and my wife go again, we know it's under new management again so thought we'd walk down have a pint and a bite to eat, both went for burgers , both reasonably priced and I have to say both very tasty, for nut much more than any fast food restaurant it was well worth the price, we'll definitely be returning. My only little gripe was you had to walk up to the top bar to order, so no table service, that accompanied by the fact the kitchen shuts at 7pm, we normally like to eat a bit later, but all in all, good value and good food.

Food was good for the price. Friendly staff. Beer was too expensive. That's the case for most pubs, but didn't expect a tenner for a beer & a shandy at a chain eatery. Maybe I'm just old & remember when beer wasn't a rip off.

We visited on November 1st, 2024, and sadly, it was quite a disappointment. While the bar staff did their best, the kitchen service was very underwhelming. By 6:30 PM, they had already run out of the special main menu on the board! The food took a long time to arrive, and when it finally did, it was subpar. The steak & ale pie was more air than a hot air balloon and hardly had any meat. The crust was burnt and tasted like a heated-up frozen pie. The chips were clearly shop-bought oven chips. This was not the level of service we had experienced before. We left feeling quite disappointed. It seems the place is being sold, and I hope the new owners can bring back some quality!
