We all ordered the moot steak and ale pie and mash. Generous helpings and it was all delicious. 2 pies and a bottle of wine offer too during the week. Highly recommended.

This is a lovely pub, it has a great choice of beers some home brewed. Warm and inviting rooms with all the facilities you could want. Breakfast was lovely, hot and freshly made with loads of toast and cereals if required. Booked for evening meal and once again great choice available and all looked delicious. I would definitely recommend the two steaks and a bottle of red or white wine for £38!! Very good value and excellent portion size. I would recommend without hesitation and I will definitely be back for more. Even left with a few bottles of ales to savour when home!

The staff were really lovely and welcoming, they were also really helpful and attentive. The food was amazing it came out quite quickly and was piping hot and fresh. All the food we had was really tasty and flavoursome. My battered mushrooms had a really light batter and came with a really nice garlic mayonnaise. My southern fried chicken burger came with lovely grilled bacon, really crisp chunky chips and the best dripping gravy I have ever had. Would really recommend and you are missing out on an absolute gem if you don’t come. Wish we were in Matlock longer so I could go again. 10/10 (I wanted to take a photo of my chicken burger but it was too tempting and I had to start eating it)

We had a meal in the Red Lion the night before our anniversary. It was so good and the staff were so lovely, we cancelled our booking at another restaurant for our anniversary meal and booked the Red Lion instead. We had a great meal, the staff were friendly and the atmosphere was welcoming. We had a pre meal drink in the pretty beer garden and my husband really appreciated the beer which is brewed there. When we found out accommodation was available as well, we decided that we would be foolish to stay anywhere else when we return to the Peak District. A big thank you to all at the Red Lion for making our special night such a pleasant experience

We were enticed to eat here after seeing the special "Two Steak meals including a bottle of Wine" for £38 plus all their good reviews, we were not disappointed, our meal was very enjoyable and the steaks cooked to our liking. It is a traditional town pub/hotel, well presented, clean and welcoming and the staff we came into contact with were very friendly and obliging. Well worth a visit, no complaints from either my wife or myself.

Eight of us booked a meal on the night England played in the Euros so we were worried it would be difficult to enjoy our meal. We needn’t have worried - we were seated away from the bar and service was good and food very tasty. Good selection of beers and the deals on 2 steaks/ fish and chips were good value. Would recommend if you want good pub grub

The drinks from the micro brewery got the thumbs up from all our group. The food was in the main simple pub grub with a few notable exceptions. it was well prepared. We all thought it tasted great, particularly the risotto and the fish and chips which, unlike some places, was not dripping in fat. Reasonably priced.

Staying in Matlock with a friend, we ate here twice - not only was it about 2 minutes from our cottage, but the food was delicious, plentiful and reasonably priced. Whenever we are in Matlock we always dine at the Red Lion. The food and service are consistently good. On this occasion we had three sharing plates to start, which were excellent. Unfortunately, the main courses were slightly disappointing. We chose the ribeye steak with all the trimmings, but the chips let the meal down as they were not up to the usual standard. Despite being advertised as ‘hand cut’, they appeared to be frozen and quite dry, which I pointed out to the waitress who said she would feedback to the chef. This was such a shame as the steak was very good- tender and tasty. Next time we visit, I will ask in advance of ordering. I'm hoping this was just a one off.

My husband and I stayed here for 2 nights in August 2023 and it was great value for money. Staff were friendly and helpful. We ate twice in the restaurant and the food was of a very high standard, filling and not over priced. We stayed in Room 6 which had a lovely 4 poster bed and fantastic bathroom and was very clean. On the down side, but I did mention to the owner on leaving, is that blackout curtains are needed in this room as the window is next to the illuminated sign which did not go off until 12 a.m. There is a road noise on the front. There was a damp smell at the bottom of the stairs on the approach to the room but Matlock is prone to flooding, so maybe at some time this is what happened and it can take a while to disappear I would imagine. Must add that there was no smell at all in the room. Overall, we thoroughly enjoyed our stay and would certainly return.

During lockdown I just fancied a pint of real ale. Searching the sites for real ale I discovered the Moot Oak Micro Brewery. After an email exchanged Lee convinced me to try their bottle conditioned ales. Assured they were good, I choose the Phil Er Up 4.0%. And Giddy Edge IPA 5.3%The brewery is tucked away at the back and observing all social distance rules I was able to peer into it and even though compact it looked well ordered and I think expansion will soon be needed. The beer is very good, and both had full but rounded tastes that only conditioned or cask can offer. Often small breweries overly complex their beers, over hop or try weird combinations to appeal to the modern craft taste but not these ones from Moot Oak. These ones seem well balanced and very satisfying, and very suitable to me. Perhaps the very hilly cycle ride gave me an extra thirst but anyway I highly recommend getting a take away beer from here. With beer like this the pub ,The Red Lion must be worth trying when lockdown is over.

My Husband and I were staying in a B&B; close by and the owner recommended the Red Lion for our evening meal, (she was going herself the same night), we were welcomed by the friendly staff, and seated straight away, we ordered the drinks and then chose from the menu, my Husband had the pie and I had the burger both were very well presented and best of all tasted delicious, we were too full to have a desert. Would recommend to anyone staying in Matlock to give it a try.

If you're in Matlock and don't want to go far (and particularly if you're looking for somewhere dog-friendly) we can thoroughly recommended this place. The mushroom bruschetta is delicious, steak pie is big and hearty, the stuffed chicken breast in tarragon sauce extremely tasty.

Steak was cooked perfectly, myself and brother tried something new and enjoyed it fully. Service is good quality and they make sure you receive all you asked for. Really good for a family meal out :)

This pub was a great find with excellent real ales, a lovely beer garden and friendly people running the pub. We had a joke with the chap who was running it about it being the best carvery in Derbyshire - well he was wrong, it was actually better than that

We have just completed a weeks holiday in Matlock Green and visited the Red Lion three times for meals - two evenings and a Sunday Lunch (Fathers Day). The food is absolutely delicious - we had a great carvery on the Sunday with really wide choices of meat and vegetables at an excellent value for money price. On the two evenings we chose from both the main menu and the specials board - plenty of choice we tried a lasagne, pan-fried haddock, hunters chicken and katsu chicken with bbq sauce - they also have a cheesecake of the day - white chocolate and lime was particularly lovely - everything was 100% on all three occasions! Coupled with great customer service from our waitress, who was friendly and efficient, and the bar staff we were made to feel really welcome. Our experience of this venue really added to a perfect holiday! Would advise booking for a Sunday lunch as seemed to be very popular with locals and visitors alike! Thank you The Red Lion!!

We went for Sunday lunch and it was probably the best I've had, the meat melted in your mouth and the veg was brilliant with meaty gravy

Simply the best place for brunch (and any other light meal) in Matlock. We are a party of 8 and they coped admirably, all of the breakfasts coming out at the same time and hot. Reasonable prices and being located in a (long stay) car park helps.

Delicious lunch. I had ham and cheese baguette. Crunchy bread and chunky ham. My friend had leek and potato soup which she said was wonderful with tasty fresh granary bread. The oatcake with cheese and onion was also highly rated. Loos were clean.

Really lovely food, you wouldn't know it from the outside/inside - it's like any other pub but the food was really good. Had the best dessert - rice pudding with apple and nuts - to die for.

We called in here for an impromptu evening meal with our 4 year old grandson as we were staying at nearby Landal Darwin Forest & he wanted the lasagne that Barringtons had on their Children’s Menu. We ordered our drinks & perused the menus, whereupon our Grandson decided he didn’t fancy it after all, nor anything else on the menu! In desperation, I asked the kind & patient gentleman taking our order (& everyone else’s) if he might be able to do a jacket potato with cheese & baked beans (not on the menu!) to which he replied cheerfully, “No problem!” we then ordered our own meals of scampi, peas & chips. The meals were served very quickly which, when you have a grouchy but hungry 4 year old, was extremely welcome! We soon polished off our tasty meals & drinks, paid the bill & were on our way. I just had to review to say how grateful we were to the lovely gentleman who looked after us so well that evening; over and above service & delicious food - what’s not to like!?
