What an amazing experience, start to finish. Table ready and well laid out, lovely staff who were very polite and efficient. The food well…. Best food I have eaten in a long time. There were 11 of us and we all really enjoyed our food. We were singing the praises of this delightful place for some time. It also benefits from a lovely ambience and tasteful decor. Cannot wait to visit there again, it’s a fair way to travel but would be well worth the effort.

We had a private party for 22 on the 3rd August. The meal and service were 10/10 and as an added bonus it is dog friendly. Very reasonably priced. We will certainly visit again and would have no hesitation in recommending it to others

Located in the centre of Atherstone. We've stayed in the main hotel a couple of times for family events. They are dog friendly in all rooms. Meals are excellent and staff very friendly. Main hotel is better than the annex, which reputably has very thin walls and quite noisy as reported by two different family members who stayed there. The hotel is very good at organising functions.

The burger came to me raw, when asking the staff to re do another burger they was rude. They just re heated the burger up and gave it back burnt. Then when I want a refund it was a big problem to them. The manger said I was not guaranteed to a refund. I had not eaten the burger and I had to fight for refund. I'm truly shock with the reaction of the staff. Ps I had my wedding here a few years and the food made one of my guests sick so will never eat here again

The hotel room was fantastic but Don’t eat there .We arrived the person on desk gave us the key for room . Then asked if she could book us breakfast and said if We booked it on arrival We got it cheaper. So being a silly Old women and tired from a long day just said yes £53 for 3 grandsons and 2 Adults. . She never said We could pick from a menu in morning. Bloody shocking the boys would have been happy with a bacon bun or toast and cereal. We then ordered food and drinks at the bar Which was far from cheap £80 1 of the boys does not eat beans or peas So I asked could he have an onion ring . When it came no onion ring just chips and four strips . When We got breakfast it was awful certainly not worth £53 .

Comfy hotel, surprisingly easy for NEC despite the distance!, situated in the centre of the market town of Atherstone it is just off the A5.The B4114 will take you through Coleshill to the NEC in about half an hour on nice quiet country roads! The hotel is a15th century coaching inn with plenty of character, the rooms vary in size but are clean & tidy..the ones in the annexe have been freshly decorated. Dogs are allowed in the rooms (handy for Crufts) & they don't charge for dogs or increase prices when events are on! I saw the function room dressed for a wedding & it was very impressive. Food is really good with large portions too & at great prices! 2024 update: Another great stay, well looked after- the run to the Nec trickier now as my satnav didn't recognise the new road layout after Coleshill but route easy enough, already booked for next year too!!

This was our second visit to the Hotel in a short period of time, this visit was to stay locally to family over a three day period, our first visit was one evening in a large group. On arriving, which was booked through Booking.com, the reception staff plus manager seems hesitant in which room to allocate and placed us in the annexe, knowing a little of the hotel and town we asked to be put in the main building, not a few doors down from the hotel. They obliged and put us on the first floor, The wife said she would run a bath as we had driven up from Cornwall, on doing so the water remained Cold, A phone call down to the manager ,who said he would look into it. 30 minutes later we were advised that we were changing rooms, another 40 minutes later the next room was cleared awaiting our arrival. Whilst sitting on the bed in the first room my wife opened up the Bedside draw to find a Kentucky fried chicken or similar basket of Eaten chicken drumsticks, that had actually turned Mouldy and green, that draw hadn't been inspected for some while. I took the offending item down to the Manager and gave it to him, his response was where did you get that, to which i replied ,out of your freshly prepared room. I spoke to the Cleaners of the second room to ensure there was no repeat of this issue, they were not surprised which worried me. Our room had one small window with an air conditioning generator outside and it was one of the warmest week ends in the midlands, The room had no air conditioning,so the window was opened in order to get air in, Hence little or no sleep from the constant air con which was keeping the bar area cool. At no time did the manager apologise for the Rotten food in the room or the fact there was no hot water in the first room, his attitude was surprising for senior management. The room on our second night had the pleasure of a company of guests in the next room that were hell bent on fighting verbally all night, Language was nothing short of foul, only stopping the the early hours of the morning, Banging walls and doors, the telephone ringing many time, I can only assume to complain over the noise. we went down to the bar to await collection and poured ourselves a coffee as we were allowed to do on the previous visit, the Manager was very quick to remind us it needed paying for, we said that it was included on the last visit to which he gave no answer, i reminded him the cost was a poor substitute for the rotten food in the bed side cabinet and the inconvenience we were put through in getting a room. We could not criticize the food during our stay,

Travelled over from Ireland for a family wedding. My sister is celiac and requested a gluten free breakfast but there was obviously cross contamination as she ended up violently ill and missing the whole wedding. The hygiene rating of 3 on the door should have been a warning. They made no apology for their carelessness and didn't seem to grasp the seriousness of the situation. Staff appeared to be untrained and uninterested. The wedding itself was great but the bar in the function hall was closed at 9pm! Would not recommend this hotel

The bedrooms were clean, comfortable and had everything you needed for a good nights sleep. The breakfast was good and staff very helpful. Our reunion went really well thanks to being well looked after by the duty manager and the staff who were working. In the evening we had a medical emergency and the staff were excellent and did everything they could to help until ambulance arrived. The hotel was excellent value and the staff were attentive and very helpful. It certainly doesn’t deserve some of the reviews it’s been given!

Went to book in took 20 minutes before anyone came .when i was given the key was in the annexe next door what a disgusting place this is room was ok but when you went to use the toilet it was so small you could not shut the door. Could not sleep because there was noise all night creaking floor boards in the room above awful smell throughout the building. Went for a drink with my family in bar 93 which is part of this annexe when my daughter and her friend went to the toilet they said the smell was that bad it made them feel sick. When you book to stay in the red lion you expect to stay there not in a dose hole two doors away. We were recommended this place by a local undertsker to hold a small wake. Trudy was really helpful and offered the Library room. For a cold February day and about 25 people it was spot on. A warm and cosy room with a log fire. The food was all ready for us when we arrived, our package included unlimited teas and coffees and it was never any troble to get fresh bought in. The food was fresh and plentiful and the bar is next to the private room, very conventient. I can't comment on the rooms as no one stayed over, but for what we wanted it was great. The one downside was a very small car park and for those not local, or with mobility challenges, it's a bit difficult to know where to park.

Never again void , went for Xmas comedy night , biggest shambles ever , first got out reservation wrong, saying it was for 6 but was 7, First course arrived 3 pawns and lettuce leaf, second course arrived, I cut my chicken was completely pink and cold in middle , I gave it back to girl , who was apologetic, while she was gone the lady to me said mine chicken the same , the young girl then returned with my chicken and said the chef said it’s fine !!!!!!! I looked at girl and said would you eat that , she didn’t answer. the other lady then pointed out hers was the same , at this point the manager came over asked the problem and said we get you new one. Chicken then returned chopped up and nearly cremated, obviously same chicken just over cooked now , before could say anything young girl just ran off, whole table was just laughing in disbelief. Manager came over again said no no this won’t do , and took my plate and disappeared, she returned and asked if we like to speak to chef . My response was I prefer a meal but as I can see that not gonna happen I will, The 18 years old head chef had the cheek to come out and tell us it was fine to eat , brought chicken out in box , explaining how he know their all cooked by checking temperature, i explained well you must have missed some he response was no I didn’t ! ( I mean man up and accept responsibility) I’m not fussy all you had to do was say sorry and give me new chicken when I originally asked. Manager once again came over and said let’s all go have 3rd course and can sort refund out. 3rd course was nice , not really sure what the comedy show was about as missed most of it , disco at end was best part. Guess what emails a-few days after and still no refund , Never be returning again

There's the usual kettle, tea, coffe, sugar and milk pods but also a nice addition of hot chocolate sachets and mini packs of biscuits. Eventually after asking for a second time, a young chap popped over leaving me with a spray and cloth whilst telling me the bar staff where still very busy. Went for Mother's Day lunch. The carvery choice was limited. I fancied the lamb but changed my mind when I saw the shrivelled up piece of meat with fatty streaks in it. No chicken, turkey or gammon. Lots of people were complaining about there being no chicken or turkey. Had pork - turned out to a tough piece of leather that was hard to cut. All the vegetables were overcooked. Roast potatoes seemed to have rubber jackets. Desserts were not much better. My creme brulee was probably the most unappetizing one I have ever had. My wife's chocolate something on a slate was rock hard. She ended up with an upset tummy. The block of chocolate on the tables for the 'mothers' was 'ordinary'. The staff obviously had never been told how to take an order properly or serve or clear the table. One waitress was dressed as if she had just walked in off the street. The chefs looked particularly scruffy as they wandered around.

We called in at the Red Lion for an evening meal on Friday 5th January as we were looking for a quick bite to eat before going home. I ordered the Chef super food salad (£7.95) and my partner scampi and chips. After ten minutes the waitress came over and informed us they had run out of avacado for the salad and they would replace it with fennel. No problem. When the salad arrived it amounted to a few lettuce leaves, six small pieces of cucumber, three cherry tomatoes and four small pieces of feta cheese mixed in with what looked like diced peppers although it was hard to tell. No fennel although the inner heart of the lettuce had been cut to imitate this. The scampi and chips had both been overcooked and were just about edible. There was one other group of four eating so the premises was not busy. Thouroughly disapointing experience.

Popped in and asked a staff member if they were serving lunch. Felt like we were interrupting their day, none of the staff made any effort to engage with us, although we noticed they were very much engaging with people whom they appeared to know (locals maybe?). Staff noticeably very distant, no effort to make eye contact. Waited to be served but no-one came. Turned out food had to be ordered at the bar. When it arrived the food was greasy, not particularly appetising. The sour cream that came with the nachos was so old it had separated from the side of the container. The surroundings are very pleasant, such a shame the staff and food let the place down. Prices were reasonable.

I've eaten at this place a few times now and just don't know how I feel, I want to like it because the location is great, the facilities seem to be well looked after and you can always get a table but on the last two visits which have been for different things, a 'quick' coffee and lunch the service just isn't great. When we called in for coffee they basically forgot us, we sat there for around 15 minutes waiting for the drinks and we'd ordered at the bar.... the second time we had lunch, we were one in about 5 tables and again the service wasn't great. We ordered at the bar and it was quite a wait for the food (sandwiches, paninis, nachos) then when the food did come one of the orders was wrong and another person had to wait on their chips. Not great when you're in a group as you feel you need to wait for everyone to have their food and then it just means all the food gets cold. When the food did all come it was ok.... nothing special but you are paying a little bit more than you normally would at a local cafe. So all in all it becomes the place we go to because it's there and has space but not the place you'd choose to go to because of the great food and service. The shocking thing is we will probably still end up going back as you always want to give it another go.

For dinner i ordered lasgane with garlic bread & salad. I had to get a spoon to scoop off all of the oil from the top of my lasagne before i could start eating it. The 'garlic bread' was 2 triangles of greasy stale bread and the salad could have been great, i was nice & fresh, however drowned in some sort of dressing (no mention of this on the menu) I abandoned the entire meal and went elsewhere. For lunch the next day i thought i'd give them a chance to redeem themselves & ordered a burger & chips, played it safe, you cant really go wrong with a burger can you?... Well, i was preoved wrong, bottom of the bun was soggy, top of the bun was burned and the burger was incredbly dry... And also charcoaled... Never again!

The hotel is a gem and although we weren't residential, looked like a nice place to stay.We sat in the conservatory, which is in fact an enclosed courtyard, which was light and comfortable.Service was good and, despite one small mistake with our order (for which the chef personally apologised) the food was of good quality and served hot.We will visit again.

Respectable food with fish and chips being the exception (do not order). Pate was quite good despite the fact that we had to pay 3 pounds to have with our pate. Ploughman's was quite nice. Hard to describe the service as it was literally non-existent. We were sitting in the dining room. After sitting there for 10 minutes with no one stopping by our table (we were 1 of 2 tables in the restaurant) I went to the bar and asked if someone was going to take our order. I was told that it was our responsibility to come to the bar and order our food and wine. The bottle of wine with 2 glasses was given to me so that I could walk back to my table with it. When I got back to the table I realized that the wine had a cork. I walked back up to the bar with the bottle to inform the bartender that the wine needed to be opened. She informed me that she didn't know how to open a bottle of wine. I asked her if she could find someone to do it and she obliged. It's easy to understand why this restaurant is rated so poorly.

We visited as a family group for lunch a few days before Christmas, the restaurant was busy with many tables being reserved. However there was enough room to accommodate us. Despite the rush the front of house staff were very friendly when I placed the order. Two of us went for the Christmas carvery option which was delicious. The remainder of the order took quite a time to arrive (understandably), however one plate did not arrive at all. I was just about to make an enquiry when a very surly young waitress finally brought it over without a word of apology and virtually threw the plate onto the table. My sister took exception to this and made a complaint about the service to another member of staff. To her credit this was acted upon and we did receive an apology from the girl in question. Food was fine once it had arrived.

After traveling 7 miles, and looking forward to a nice freshly cooked meal.................We ordered 2 fish and chips, photographs on the menu looked scrumptious, how wrong could this be. Our fish came to the table uncooked with very pale uncooked batter. I sent the meals back to the kitchen, I was refunded but not an acceptable apology to say the least, they made me pay for our 2 coffees we ordered, never asked if we would like anything else, very unprofessional staff. The higher management need to look into this immediately. One member of staff asked me if I would return to the establishment?, obviously the answer was no. Nice place but food shocking, the chef needs a cooking lesson, if he/she cannot cook fish then what can he/she actually cook???????Avoid this place for food!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Choices for weekday evening dining in Atherstone are restricted to the Red Lion Hotel or questionable takeaways. So we ate at the hotel, twice. In addition to dining in the bar area there is a deceptively large dining room with decent sized tables and comfortable chairs. The food was freshly cooked, well presented and tasty. Unlike some other reviewers, we found the bar and serving staff to be polite and helpful. Warning, if you order the hand thrown pizza, you will need a friend with a large appetite!

Went for a lunch from work today. We ordered two main courses and two drinks, which came and were adequate. However, to finish we decided to order two desserts and two coffees, we ordered at the bar, then they took forever. The coffees were taken to the wrong table and passed round the guests until we pointed out they may be ours. One dessert finally arrived, and looked revolting, it wasn't any of the two that we ordered. When we politely asked Lorraine the waitress about this, she said "You've been brought was ordered on the till, and there is no need to be rude about it", she then turned her back to us and walked off shaking her head, like we had done something wrong. I was just completely and utterly astounded that someone could talk to their customers like this. We left the one wrong dessert and coffees and walked out in shock. I have never posted a review on here before, but honestly I am so furious I just had to warn other people.

What a terrible hotel. It started by being given a room that stank of cigarette smoke and the lock was broken. The second room was ok as far as amok and lock were concerned but when we came to go to bed we found the cheapest mattress was on the bed, you know the type where you could feel every spring.Needless to say we woke up aching from head to toe.The worst is still to come. Breakfast : We arrived at the breakfast area and found it totally decimated. No beans, eggs, cereal, toast, hot water, or glasses. After waiting with others for items to be replenished,I went to Reception to complain. After a few minutes 2 girls came out to look and meet a tirade of what people were waiting for. It then took a good 10 minutes for the missing items to be replaced. After trying to eat the breakfast we wish we hadn't bothered, as the sausage were not only cheap ones but had been kept hot for too long and dried out, as had the black pudding, which was like cardboard. The scrambled egg when it came had been cooked far too long. All in all a terrible experience.
