Had a lovely lunch at The Red Lion. Happy polite staff, great atmosphere, and exceptional food. Have already booked to return

Visited on a Saturday night. It’s a warm and inviting stone-built country pub. The menu has a few interesting Portuguese influences and I can recommend the house red wine which is also from Portugal. The menu is not extensive but I’m sure most people would find something they like. I had a pint of prawns followed by lamb cutlets, which came with some nice green beans and new potatoes. The bill for 2 including 3 glasses of wine and dessert was around £100. Not cheap, but good value. It’s a very good option in an area not well served for gastropubs. It’s also dog friendly.

A lovely midweek meal while staying at the nearby (and also superb) Granary. The Red Lion catered for us when we arrived relatively late for a Tuesday night, a very warm and hospitable welcome from all, especially the superb Charlie. No nonsense pies that involved pastry all round (a point stressed by the serving staff), lamb cutlets and calves liver were enjoyed by all, washed down well with local Hook Norton Brewery and the less local Timothy Taylors.

A great pub, bar and restaurant with wonderfully appointed accommodation. Our evening was a wonderful experience and we were served by Ben and Georgia who looked after our part for the evening. They were incredibly attentive and made our evening very special. I would highly recommend a visit and overnight stay.

Finally got to try a pub that’s been on my list for some time! The meal was lovely, I had Chicken Parmigiana and it was great, the fries tasted fabulous too. For dessert I had the Portugese Molotov which I’ve never seen on a restaurant menu before! It was certainly unique, extremely light and fluffy with a subtle sweet flavour! Service here was really efficient and friendly and the atmosphere was good. Car park could do with being bigger though as really struggled to find a space despite having booked table.

The pub had excellent food and there was a large variety in drinks available. We loved the breakfast they provided for guests who stay. We stayed here in the cottage for two nights as a group of 4, as part of the rooms you could book. We had a wonderful stay and staff were really friendly and helpful with any queries. The beds were comfortable and the rooms were very clean. While we were worried about sleeping near a pub you couldn't hear anything downstairs, which was wonderful! At the same time there was enough parking and the rooms were really clean. We also loved the soaps provided by the accommodation. We woke up to glorious views and a lovely village feel, would recommend if you need to stay nearby or for some lovely walks. Unfortunately I only took one photo of the view in the morning but as you can see it was wonderful like the stay. Thanks so much!

Stayed here in June lovely location, great room and beautiful evening meal. For me the only think that let it down was the boxed breakfast a great idea but unfortunatlythe products inside weren't to our taste it had a lot of sweet items in, hence the 4 stars instead of 5. Would stay again if travelling on a weekend when they do cater downstairs for breakfast.

We visited the Red Lion at Hellidon for a meal. The food was good but, unfortunately on the way out, we saw a Bicester Hunt and Whaddon Chase print on their wall. After further investigations we found The Red Lion also hosted the Hunt for their Christmas meal. (Despite their "trail hunting" smokescreen, Bicester Hunt and Whaddon Chase are still routinely hunting and killing foxes.) The Red Lion's support for the fox hunting community seems at odds to the family and pet friendly image they like to portray??

Excellent service, food and drinks. Couldn't have been happier with the hospitality they provided for my dad's 60th birthday meal and his 16 guests. The pub had lots of other big tables to contend with at the same time and still the service was amazing. The pub is also in a beautiful location. Thank you to all staff that made a special day even more special.

I am a relatively frequent visitor of The Red Lion, and I always enjoy my visits, however the service on my recent visit was really poor. I was ignored by both the waitress and the waiter multiple times, to the point where it was actually questionable. The only person who actually served me promptly was the younger waitress working on the bar, and she was really nice - thank goodness for her! I probably would have left and gone elsewhere if it wasn’t for her. A shame because I really do like this pub.

Everything here was truly lovely. Tucked away in a small village just outside of Daventry. I was invited along by my partner's family to help celebrate an 80th birthday. The bar was a nice size for a country pub/restaurant. Our meal was fantastic! 3 courses all tasted amazing with generous sizes also. The wonderful staff also had 2 separate birthdays to attend to on that night too. They all also helped us keep the surprises a secret too, and very attentive with details too. We also stayed the night in one of the gorgeous B&B rooms they have available. I liked how modern the rooms looked whilst also keeping old beams on show too. In our room, the bathroom was spacious and had a lovely walk-in shower. Breakfast the following morning was incredibly tasty. Very full from it. All in all. A lovely place with wonderful staff. If it was possible to rate it a 6, I would.

Took my Mother for her Birthday on a Monday(rare to find pubs open) and had a very tasty lunch. My Chicken Maderia special was particularly delicious. Spoilt to some degree by ridiculous background music, including a Maria Carey Christmas song! In March?

Rooms, Service, Location great but Check in after 5pm is late and Check out at 10am is a bit too early. Also no cooked breakfast option and the continental breakfast is a few bits left in a box in the room so not even hot toast an option.

Recently stayed here for 2 nights due to attending a wedding locally. Room was small in size but had everything we needed for our stay, the continental breakfast in the room was a perfect little touch as a warm breakfast was not available as we stayed during the week, which was a shame as we had dinner downstairs in the evening which was amazing! So I can imagine if they did a hot breakfast it would be just as good! The only negative we found was the bed was uncomfortable, me & my partner both struggled to sleep on both nights of our stay and the towels provided smelt of cooking fat/oil. Overall I probably wouldn’t stay again, however I would definitely return for food/restaurant.

I have stayed and dined at the red lion several times over the past few months and I can say the hospitality I have received has been second to none. The rooms are clean and comfortable, the breakfast box is more than enough to set you up for the day. The food has always been a nice. Rodger and Kate who are a huge asset to the venue, they are always friendly, professional and can’t do enough to make the experience enjoyable.

We had a lot vely table with some heart 'petals' scattered over the table and a small bowl of haribo hearts. What a lovely finishing touch. The food and service was delightful.

Popped in for a drink and lunch after a long walk ....initially very impressed had a seat in the bar with my little dog and friend. All well untill a toddler was allowed to run unaccompanied in the bar and restaurant..unfortunately the sudden movement..upset my dog as the unaccompanied toddler was standing / running within 1 foot of the dog. Unacceptable .....and then a few inappropriate not direct comments from behind the bar from the barmaid led to a customer say its the unsupervised crying toddler upsetting the dog. However this was deemed acceptable ....to allow the toddler to come near customers tables and a dog in the bar area .... another customer also commented as we left 'we were being pushed out of a pub by an uncontrolled toddler.' Not a pleasant experience bad management skills noted by other customers. Such a shame.

We have just moved to the area so booked The Red Lion in the hope of having a good local pub to eat at regularly. Starters were good although we weren’t informed of the price of The special of the garlic prawns which was a hefty £14 for 4. Our mains were disappointing. I was unable to eat the chicken schnitzel which was most definitely past its sell by date and tasted off. This was sent back but I had no apology, just a poor excuse that the chef had added too much white wine. My husbands belly of pork was dry and looked unappetising. I then ordered the pie of the day which was good but the chicken had put me off my appetite so we left shortly after with no offer of a complimentary drink or course. The table opposite was extremely loud and raucous which also spoilt our enjoyment of the evening. We will not be returning.

Picked red lion at random as down from Scotland at an event. Katie the waitress was fabulous and so was the food our only complaint was the bill , we are to blame a bit as never checked it closely until we were heading back to Birmingham. There was 5 of us and our bill was £274.17 and we paid cash and left a good tip but bottom of bill was a service charge of 10% for 6 or more people and they charged it to 5 of us plus no word was said to use so kind of put a dampener on it. Can’t fault the food was excellent and good banter with staff just a pity this happened as that’s what we remember about red lion.

Friendly, accommodating and to be recommended. We were due to go to a wedding nearby and stayed here the night. Check in isn’t until 5pm but they knew our situation and made sure a room was available for us to change. We came back from the reception in time to get a couple of drinks before closing. It’s a small village in delightful surroundings and well used by the friendly locals. The bedroom was comfortable and breakfast is in a box in your room. It’s a great idea and you won’t go hungry. Highly recommended

I’m a bloke, and like all blokes we don’t write reviews. But I’ve gone out of my way to write this . So, food never turned up. Waited 45 mins in the end asked waitresses where our food was. Had to wait a further 15 mins before anyone came back to us only to be told ‘sorry, they are just make it now’. Not wanting to wait 30+ more mins for rushed out food we decided to pay for our drinks and left. Simply saying sorry and doing nothing to remedy the problem is just lip service. It’s easy to say sorry. Genuinely sorry is when you acknowledge your mistake and do your best to fix it. All we got was an apology, frankly it wasn’t good enough and needless to say won’t we going there again. I hope others find this review helpful when deciding whether or not to go there. Terrible customer service by badly trained couldn’t careless staff .

You were almost perfect bar something that only you know that occurred at the end of our meal. Our food was fantastic, my peri chicken starter was excellent and my wife had the pate which was superb. My steak was cooked perfectly and service from Grace and the other young lady was top notch. We enjoyed meeting the gorgeous little dog Percy who marched around the pub liked he was boss.... Lovely little fella. Ample parking to the side as well as a field of friendly goats fielded to the rear and the pub has 6 rooms too. Nearly perfect and would return in a heartbeat. Fantastic food. Wonderful menu. Very friendly and helpful staff. This is a dog friendly, fine dining pub/restaurant. Dressed crab and the Lion fishcake to start, both gorgeous. Chef's rart of the day {goatcheesr and red onion) ans pork tenderloin wrapped in Parmalat ham for mains. Again, wonderful. Big shout out to the staff who avoided stepping on our Greyhound. This is a phenomenal pub. I travel 10 miles to get here because it’s better than any other pub that I could go to. Lovely cosy pub, great staff but standout food that’s way ahead of what a typical gastro chucks out. I’m a seasoned gastropub visitor of 20 years and this place has it nailed!

The Staff at The Olive Branch always have a smile and they are volunteers. Nothing is too much trouble and they always make us feel welcome. The Homemade Cakes look delicious and the large Cheese Scones are always eaten by my friends. In the colder weather my friends usually have their soup and I always see someone in there eating a Full English Breakfast at lunchtime.

The best Moules a la Creme outside Brussels but for one thing, it was described as Moules Mariniere which it most definitely wasn,t. But the mussels were big, juicy, succulent in a cream sauce to die for. Pity the Chicken Kiev had no garlic butter AT ALL. And when I asked to talk to the chef to congratulate him on his mussels he never came - the difference between a family resturant and a commercial one. What a pity.

We visited the outdoor restaurant and pizza bar. The bar area had a really nice holiday vibe where you could sit outside overlooking a stunning showjumping arena. The staff were very friendly who quickly served us and took our food order. We had soft drinks and vegetarian burgers, with chips and homemade slaw. It was delicious and competitively priced. We'll definitely return soon, even if to just drink and take in the atmosphere.
