We stopped at this pub while doing a circular walk around Stretham. The greeting from the lady behind the bar was perfect. Bring a Sunday it was only a choice of a roast or the basket meals. We sat in the garden at the back and had scampi and chips. The food was excellent and very hot. The service was perfect and attentive.

We came here for Sunday lunch. Bad decision. There was only 1 other table in use when we arrived (1pm), which didn't encourage us, but we decided to give them a try. The roast beef was so tough it would have been better suited as shoe leather, the potatoes looked nice but had a weird taste, only 1 tiny yorkshire (probably from a pack of 12 from tesco) and brown water pretending to be gravy. It was the type of meal where you leave thinking where to go to find real food as you are still hungry. We'll never set foot in there again, unless they change management and Definitely replace the "cook".

Several times I’ve been to this village pub between 845 and 9:20 pm only to find that the bar is closed not consistent with the closing times of 10 pm or 11 pm I would suggest that they change the closing time still being close whenever we feel like it which I feel is really not good enough

I have just returned from a family lunch get together & i don't even know where to start with my review. Upon arrival we were greeted with "you are early" (table booked for 12.30 and arrival at 12.15) Two tables in the restaurant had a plastic xmas table cloth - when we queried why ours wasn't, the reply was these tables had booked the Christmas menu. When pre-ordering some of the party had requested starters, but the lady said no need to pre order those, just the mains. No starters were offered on the day. The food came out in dribs and drabs and it was almost too much bother to bring sauces to the table. When some had nearly eaten their pie and chips, gravy was brought to the table. It took ages to have the table cleared. No desserts were volunteered we had to ask for the menu. No coffees were offered. In conclusion this is the worst food we have EVER been served collectively and the attitude of the lady serving was very rude. We would definitely not return or recommend this place to eat.

Stayed in a twin room at this pub last night and barely slept at all. One of the beds my husband slept in was Ok but the other bed was appalling - the mattress was about 12 inches shorter than the wooden bed base so my feet hung off the mattress. It was so lumpy and uncomfortable I had to sleep on top of the duvet and use a towel to give me some cover. Each time I turned over the loud squeaking from the mattress woke my husband up. After finally dropping off around 3am (based on the church clock) we were both awakened by the loud slamming of doors and conversations at 07.20 as other guests were allocated breakfast between 07.00 and 08.00 only. I suggest the owner of the establishment spends a night as we did in this room on the very same mattress to understand the complete lack of restfulness we paid for. Oh and the TV doesn’t work. Obviously we would never go back and feel very let down that a place that offers visitors accommodation considers this to be acceptable

We visited for lunch and noticed the bar staff seemed stressed, which could be interpreted as rudeness. My friend order scampi and chips in a basket, specifying she wanted chips rather than fries. I ordered a bacon, brie and cranberry toastie. When our food arrived, my friend was served fries, she mentioned this to the server, who said they had no chips. My toastie was very thin and although I could taste bacon, it was doubtful if the cheese was brie. I saw a smear of cranberry. While we were eating, we noticed that another customer had been served chips with her meal! When I paid, the staff apologised for not having chips, so I pointed out to her that another customer indeed had chips. The response was unsatisfactory, I will not return.

Room 6 Large cobwebs in two corners of the room. A black mark the size of a 50 pence on the white duvet cover and food crumbs in the crevices of the remote control causing it to be difficult to use at times. The towel rail in the bathroom was missing as was the toilet roll holder. So there was nowhere to hang anything in the bathroom, no door hooks either. Only one side of the bed had a lamp which made it very difficult to get up in the middle of the night or even read. The table and one chair were so very shabby even a charity shop I am sure would not accept them. During the evening meal which was ok another couple were asking for the radiators to be put on in their room as it was very cold. We also asked at the same time and was told that the owner had said earlier it was not needed. Staff went to speak with the owner again. we were then told it had been turned on but the radiators had not been bled so unlikely to come on. The heating was not turned on because the pipe coming up through the floor to the radiator thermostat remained cold. The breakfast was poor, no jam or marmalade available, bacon was cold and the dining room felt very cold as the heating was still not on. I did leave them a polite note in the room before leaving in the hope she would give us a call to apologise but no such luck

Checked in at the bar, mid afternoon. Greeted by friendly bar staff. The owner showed us upstairs to our room which was spacious and very uncluttered. An evening spent in the pub resulted in my thinking I had drunk too much, but the morning showed the floor to be on an extreme slope (see photos). The tea cups could do with being mugs as they are quite small. The bed was comfy and our room at the front wasn't noisy. The bells from the church are an excellent addition and I think they stop between 10pm and 6am, or maybe I was just very tired. The shower screen wasn't very effective due to handles on the bath which prevented it from sealing. As a result, water ran down the outside and down the slope into the bedroom area. The pub is locked at night, with no on site staff. We had to leave the key in the door to show we had left and depart via the fire escape.

The Red Lion offered a warm welcome from staff and customers alike. The building is a little tired on the inside and could use some love in the form of updates / lick of paint. The initial room offered was cold and uninviting, no heating working and no other heater fan, plus incredibly noisy as over the kitchen extractor system, the bathroom also looked cold and tired and did not compel you to use it. However the friendly and helpful staff, kindly relocated me to another room, which by contrast was a world apart from the original room. Clean, updated bathroom and warm however the TV was a little dodgy, remote didn't work very well. Food in the evening was ok, but nothing special, choice is limited in the local area. Breakfast offered a simple buffet and cooked offering used mass produced ingredients, but tasty and well presented. Would stay again if in the area.

The staff were welcoming, very helpful and the rooms were clean, tidy and with free wi-fi as a bonus. We booked a meal in the restaurant and although the menu was not extensive, the food was brilliant. It was very tasty and well presented to the point that the 3 of us could not finish all of our chips! Breakfast the next morning was in the same room and a full English was available. Sadly I omitted to take photos but trust me it's a gem of a find!

The sauce was very meagre and served on fish skin side up. Not a nice plate of food. My husband ordered chicken curry which was watery. The side of handcut chips were not cooked through and were insipid. What a disappointment . Won’t recommend at our accommodation which is a shame as it’s the local pub.

We visited in early August. Having had some nice meals here in the past our hopes were high. But we were soon disappointed with a poor food selection, different for what we had seen on previous visits. There was nothing special about the 'daily specials' on the blackboard. The waitress while clearly new to the job was very polite and helpful, but the service from the kitchen was slow given there were only three tables occupied. The food was uninspiring and bland. On arrival the welcome was great. The ale was nice albeit choice limited. Very clearly a locals pub and friendly too. The staff were clearly trying but sometimes let down by attention to detail and some basic training required. Food was ok and very acceptable but limited choice in certain areas like desserts for example and no apparent wine list. No coffee offered after dinner. Accommodation for me personally was disappointing. (Room 8 / single room) The room was of adequate size but television was older than I and the remote didn't work, the bathroom stank of heating oil emanating from below I believe and the mattress was concaved and the springs pushing through. Main issue was size of shower cubical, very small and water pressure was low so a gentle jog around to get wet was required. I did also have the kitchen extractor fire up around dawn which was quite loud. The room rate in fairness was reflective of what I got but I would say some investment in the business would bring the experience in line with the expectation. Excellent website which is why I booked the venue...

Service and food were far below my expectations. The pub has gone through several management changes of late. We thought we would see if it has improved with the latest change of management. I fully expected it to be better, having met the new management who had a lot to say about how it had improved. Well, it is in fact worse than before. The staff are friendly, but very rough and ready. We asked for bread and oil to start, only to be told that they 'don't do anything posh like that.' The portions are a lot smaller now and the prices have gone up. We queried the bill as we were astonished at the price for 2 x smoked salmon starters and a slice of stale baguette each. I don't know why this lovely village can't be blessed with a decent pub.

The menu speaks volumes - far too many choices, better to have a few signature dishes than 4 pages of options plus a specials board. The soup of the day was the same as the special board, so was the pie of the day (steak and ale as per menu) so no surprises there. Still, we tried the Rare Cambridgeshire Beef with Yorkshire pudding. 'I'm sorry, we've run out of yorkshire puddings' - 'what? You're joking!' 'No sorry, we have none left.' Do you want me to make some? It will take me 5 minutes, with some plain flour and eggs and milk? Sorry madam, we can't do that. To a yorkshire woman this is unheard of! The meal arrived, and was pretty dire, from the Aunt Bessies roast potatoes to the hard, crispy beef that really needed thinner gravy to make it softer! We challenged the waiter - the rare Cambridgeshire beef was not so rare, rather well done - in fact it was too well done! All in all, very poor (not the staff's fault) but a shame that people will stop expecting cordon bleu cookery when in fact the main claim to fame is ability to ping the microwave! We won't be back

all looked good and promising had the mixed grill steak had smell of gone off. told waitress who took it back to chef he said yes it was off. and apologised was taken off bill. could have been handled better. as in dont let the poor waitress deal with it get a manager to deal with it. thats why they get the big money, wont return.charnwood pubs should be ashamed.

I visited with my family for an evening meal (haddock mornay) which was delicious. The staff were very smiley, friendly and welcoming. A lovely clean pub that we can't wait to visit again!

The Red Lion has recently changed hands so we decided to give it a try (after avoiding it on friends' advice) and were pleasantly surprised. Friendly, efficient staff on our mid-week lunchtime visit. We sat in the conservatory area, which - OK - could do with a spruce-up in both decor and chairs (bit hard!) but is in no way unacceptable. And there's some nice planting etc in the area outside the conservatory which - on a sunny day at least - makes it all look rather nice. Plenty of choice on the reasonably-priced menu; we ordered the fish pie, and fish cakes with veg. Took around 45 mins to come but we didn't mind - the results were obviously freshly cooked, hot, very tasty. We also had puddings; I recommend the orange sponge pudding, but you seem to have to ask for whatever you want with it? (I had custard, for which there was no extra charge). We'll definitely be back and, if the food/service remains the same, will be bringing rellies along as well! One SLIGHT negative (for us) is that conversation from the bar area, although separate, is easily heard from the conservatory. From where we sat (far end) it's actually quite an odd effect! Seems like they're in the same room, close to you! OK this time, but I'm not sure about the evening when drinkers tend to forget they're in mixed company. To be fair, there are doors to the bar area, so presumably these can be closed when the bar's a bit 'rowdier'.

The Red Lion is an attractive, ivy-clad building with 2 bar areas and a restaurant area in the conservatory. The pub offers an ever changing selection of well kept real ales, as well as a good range of lagers, ciders, wine and soft drinks. The food is good quality pub food and there are always specials are available on the blackboard in the conservatory. The staff are friendly and the service is attentive. The prices are reasonable too.

Awful - lunch was bad - and I think the landlord was entertaining staff - very loudly - quite uncouth - the barman was pleasant and looked embarrassed - we were the only customers there - not surprised !!!

as a relatively large party, we turned up without a booking, and were accommodated without a problem. The food was excellent, fresh, tasty and large portions. The waitress was extremely friendly and the bar staff made us feel at home. if your idea of a Sunday afternoon involves a family atmosphere, good food and good company... This is your place

Visited this evening with a group approaching thirty for a pre-booked meal. Most of the meals were ready on arrival and the quality in general was below that expected of a reasonable restaurant. Almost everybody attending complained about some aspect of their meal. Most of the group have said they would not use the pub again for a meal. Some of the desserts were over-priced for what they were. All in all, a disappointing meal.

The new management have made incredible changes in the short time they have been in situ. We have had food from all three menus and the quality has been excellent. The atmosphere was friendly and the management are prepared to go the extra mile to satisfy customer needs.

Went to the Red Lion in Stretham on Saturday (18th Jan) with friends. We ordered starters and a main course and were very disappointed. The ladies went for Scampi and fries. They arrived looking very tired and with chips like they serve in McDonalds. No vegetables and so we asked for a side salad. The waitress bought two small bowls of salad that were drenched in vinaigrette dressing. We paid £10 and it was worth £5. My mate ordered the Chilli which nearly burned his gums out.

Great drinks, food and service! We popped in for lunch, didn’t book but were very welcome. Had a drink by the bar where our order was taken and then taken to our table. We had the set menu - all delicious!

This pub is run by friendly people. We had a very nice lunch here. My son ordered 3 small plates for his lunch and couldn't believe how big the portions were. We had to help him out and he's an adult! I had a tasty wrap with which I was able to have salad instead of chips but I had some of my husband's chips and they were lovely. Our lunch was very reasonably priced and included a drink. Not fine dining by any means, just a decent, friendly pub with reasonably priced food.

Really disappointing experience. We came for the Sunday lunch and the food was undercooked- the chef seemed to be coming out and telling people that it was the quickest service of his life- seems strange to me to admit that you rushed everyone’s food and then make them pay the same prices. The gravy was watery, the carrots and parsnips were raw and the potatoes were oily. I understand having bad days but it is unacceptable to charge the same prices when you are aware the quality is bad. There are far better places In Cambridgeshire to go for a roast- especially considering this one cost £20 for a single plate of food!!
