A hidden gem of a pub which is family _ run. We all enjoyed a delicious home cooked meal.Fish and chips and minted lamb pie . Only one of us had room for a pudding ! ( Apple and almond cake) We all wished we had discovered this pub earlier and not on the last night of our holiday,as we would have loved to have visited again and tried some more delights from the menu.

On a wet and windy Sunday this cosy quintessential pub is a perfect lunch venue. We had roast beef and Yorkshire pudding and Durch apple and almond cake with local ice cream. All were delicious and perfect portions. Service was spot on and I had a Perry which was a really unusual but very pleasant accompaniment to my lunch. Will definitely go again!!

Just been for Sunday lunch and can highly recommend! A warm welcome and great service. Had roast lamb which was hot and delicious with fresh mint sauce and sea bass with mojo sauce roasted new potatoes, rocket, spinach and a side of veg, stunning and beautifully baked. One of the nicest dishes I've ever had, a reminder of holidays abroad, fresh, hot and tasteful. Accompanied by a recommeded crisp dry cider... thank you and see you again very soon xx

Searched all the websites looking for somewhere to go for Sunday lunch, didn't want a gastropub, just a proper, home cooked Sunday lunch and we were not disappointed. A nice, old fashioned, country pub with friendly staff and proper food at good price. Could do with a little background music in the dining area as it was very quiet and lacked 'atmosphere'. Nice food, very friendly hosts and just what we were looking for, would return. Does what it says on the tin.

Staying locally in the village and first stopped for Sunday lunch. Probably one of the best pub Sunday lunches I have had in a long time. Everyone was very friendly and there is a very good selection of ales, ciders and perry, certainly know there stuff! Also dog treats available for the dogs who were made welcome. Returned on the Saturday evening for dinner, a very nice chicken curry. I would say the pub is definitely worth a visit and even a detour, they are closed Monday and Tuesday I believe. Look forward to visiting again!

I visited The Red Lion with a group of elderly ladies. We had pre booked, but walk in bookings were possible. We enjoyed local cider and delicious home cooked food. The menu was varied with a selection of traditional pub grub and more ethnic dishes from around the world. A great location in a quiet village just a few miles from Ashbourne. I will definitely be revisiting.

Booked last minute for Sunday lunch over the bank holiday weekend of May. A traditional, cosy pub serving real ale and good ‘home cooked’ food. It was lovely. Nicely presented slow cooked pork, roast potatoes, mash potatoes and gravy. With a good selection of veg which consisted of braised red cabbage, garden peas, carrots and what looked like swede? This was accompanied with apple sauce and crackling. The Whale of the day also comes highly recommended too, good size of battered fish, proper chips, garden peas and a wedge of lemon. Side dish of tartare sauce. If you have room, all the puddings are homemade. Prices reasonable. You won’t be disappointed. It was everything we hoped it would be.

Had a family meet up here. I chose the venue as it is Good Beer Guide listed and both cask ales were in good condition, though there’s an unusually wide range of ciders too. Food was really excellent - not necessarily cheap by pub grub standards, but you get what you pay for. Service was good and the background music they were playing was up my street too. So anyway, a nice old country pub getting everything right.

Went for Sunday lunch yesterday. It was everything I hoped it would be. A traditional and cosy pub serving good ‘home cooked’ food. It was lovely. Nicely presented, good selection of veg, including braised red cabbage. The meat was plentiful and beautifully cooked. Can highly recommend the lamb. Huge Yorkshire puddings! If you have room, all puddings are cooked by their lovely chef (we met him). Prices reasonable for a quality Sunday roast. You won’t be disappointed.

Hubby had the curry which was tasty too. Friendly landlady and staff. We also tried their own cider which we both enjoyed. We were disappointed not to have the chance to go back and buy some cider to take home, but had to return home sooner than planned. Would recommend.

This is the second time we've eaten at the Red Lion and both times have been great! I really enjoyed the home made steak and ale pie whilst my dining companion had the burger. The puddings were also yummy (bakewell and brioche bread and butter pudding) We had a good look at the cider list and tried some of the home-made ciders, which were delicious.

After a day picking up hubbys ebay purchases we found ourselves driving through Kniveton to pick up the last one before driving home we called at the Red Lion to see if we could get a meal such a lovely welcome even said we could bring doggy in ,all covid measures were in place and adhered to .The meal itself was amazing ,wonderful homecooking with that edge of excellent quality , my husband says i can be outspoken which is probably true and i have no problem complaining if im paying for something and its not as it should be as he says "we can eat rubbish at home" which doesnt say much for my cooking! but i have to say its one of the best meals ive had in a long time i only wish we lived closer it would definitely be my local !!

Me and my husband ate twice here twice during our week long stay in Kniveton. We booked the second visit during our first visit as the food was that good. I booked in advance, and I knew following my email exchanges with Hannah the landlady and the previous reviews on trip advisor we were going to be in for a lovely meal and evening. This is what I would call a traditional country cosy pub, with gastro style food. The current chef Gavin has been working at the pub for several years and his food is absolutely truly scrumptious. I went in the pub not liking aubergine, but having tried some of the baba ganoush I am no converted. We even asked Gavin how he made it, so we will certainly give it a try. All the food is high end in terms of taste and appearance.Hannah and Kevin the current landlords are very friendly. And are working long hours during our current challenging times. We met Beth their hired waitress on our second visit and what an absolute delight she is. All three of them have customer service spot on. Thank you for making us feel so very welcome. Lynn & Chris

Ours was a most enjoyable evening. The landlord is very careful to follow the present restrictions - track and trace etc We asked for cider and, as they make their own, we were offered a taste of two different ones before selecting. For his meal, my husband chose the steak and ale pie (a proper pie) I had baked cod - this was so tasty! It had a cheddar and parsley crumb topping with tomato and oregano sauce - I will be trying to re-create this when home! The homemade chocolate mousse is definitely worth a try. It was all served in a pleasant and friendly manner.

Food was superb and service friendly. I can really recommend the Stilton and black pudding fritters and the steak pie. Didn’t have space for dessert.

We had enjoyed meals here previously but the quality has plummeted. Two of us ordered the fishcakes which were deep fried with no evidence that they contained any fish at all. Cheap, overcooked fishcakes and undercooked, limp frozen skinny chips. One of the worst meals I have ever been served. We were also seated in the 'function room' which was cold & scruffy.

Gorgeous food and a great choice on the kids' menu! Everything tasted really fresh and great quality ingredients. The staff were really friendly and very helpful. We even left my sons water bottle behind, and they are keeping it to one side for when we return! 😆🙈

Always a real pleasure to be back in Winster and partake of the hospitality of Old Bowling Green. Charming, relaxing and traditional with welcoming staff and very dog friendly. We enjoyed tasty basket meals (served Friday/Saturday), drinks and chit-chat. A lovely pub in a lovely village.

Very disappointing. We’ve visited here many times over past 10 years. Booked for two nights as we know how good it is and how booked up it gets. Really surprised to walk in to see mostly empty tables, one member of staff on shift trying to do everything and pub generally unclean. Tables not cleared, no welcome despite our booking - just told to sit wherever. There was an issue at another table which didn’t appear to be handled well, all seemed very tense and unprofessional. Quality of food has declined and portions small to average. Such a shame, needless to say we’ve cancelled our second booking and will head to the wheatsheaf where it’s a quality experience all around
