There were 12 of us celebrating a birthday. The host Michelle was attentive and nothing was too much trouble. All the staff were friendly and helpful. The food was first class. Would highly recommend The Red Lion. Definitely will be returning.

Came back for the steak night was not disappointed up there with the best of the steak restaurants that night can’t wait till the next 1 see you all again soon keep up the great work

Had a fabulous Saturday afternoon lunch at The Red. Biggest fish and chips I’ve ever seen! Friendly, fast service and a beautiful sunny beer garden.

Myself and my partner booked a table for dinner whilst staying in the area. From the minute we entered the pub we were made to feel like regulars and if I could give more than 5 stars I would! We brought our dog along with us and all three of us received excellent service throughout the duration of our visit. We had starters and mains and all the food was sublime; a proper drinking pub with 5* restaurant food! Our waitress Wendy was friendly, attentive and made our visit really enjoyable. We will be returning in the next few days!

Lovely traditional pub with open fire and good atmosphere and friendly nice welcome from the owner Both had fish and chips which were big portions , obviously freshly cooked and really excellent . Shared an apple crumble which was lovely . Very pleasantly suprised by the quality of food and the whole experience . Will definitely return .

We came for drinks on Friday with our two retrievers and were made so welcome. It’s a proper cosy pub/restaurant decorated beautifully for Christmas. The house wine is delicious.. Nicely busy and friendly vibes

Party of 8 for lunch Sunday just gone for my mother's birthday. Took 30 mins after asking numerous times for menus and drinks to be ordered. After an hour waiting for food not being told of a delay as they brought out the first main, I was told my meal I ordered, there wasn't any left, I asked how long it would take she said I don't know as the kitchen is busy. My girlfriend is gluten intolerant and they brought out a gluten meal 3 times which the staff also admitted Another lady brought out 2 dishes and said abruptly who's are these of which we replied we can't see them so how do we know, she then put them on the table infront of the wrong person saying I'll be back I don't know what they are. We asked the lady if the mash on the roast dinner had dairy due to another allergy the woman said she'd check, but never returned so was left on the plate. By the time the last main arrived the first person was finished and no side orders had made it the table yet. They told us as the end they were 1 person down I worked in the industry for 9 years I'd understand if they were quick on their feet but to no avail they were not. Will not be returning

oked a table for 8. Took 20 minutes for drinks orders, no menus brought even after asking. Food order taken 20 minutes later again. Over an hour wait for food. By the time food was served we had been waiting 1 hour and 40 minutes. The timing of food was terrible, and several family members had finished eating before others were served. Sides came out after people had finished eating. Staff waited until food was being served to inform us something was out of stock on the menu, when I asked how long a replacement meal would be I was told by waitress ‘I can’t say, the kitchens run off its feet’, so one member had to go without a meal. 3 separate times a gluten free beef dinner came out without gluten free gravy and had to be returned. No one checked in to ask how food was. The staff would promise answers or sides and never reappear. Roast potatoes were undercooked and meal was average at best. I don’t understand why you would set a Christmas menu which cannot be turned around in a decent time. If you want quality food from here, don’t go at a busy time. Service and food do not live up to the prices. Overall bad experience which left us disappointed.

First visit here but won't be our last. A warm welcome from the chap behind the bar who did everything right despite being very busy, making a point of checking my edlerly mother was enjoying her food. And the food was fab. So nice to have good quality, freshly prepared food from a varied menu that isn't the same as every other pub menu.

We arrived as a party of 8. 2 arriving 5 minutes late. We ordered drinks for the six and 5 arrived. Coke had no syrup and tasted like soda. One person ordered water which didn’t get delivered. The other 2 arrived and ordered Diet Coke (pint) and a mocha. A small Diet Coke was brought but no mocha which arrived 20 minutes later after a second request. The food took ages. I know there were 8 of us but people that arrived after us were fed first . We mentioned this to the waiter who in fairness was left to run the bar and serve all the tables. We were the visited by the chef/ owner who was extremely rude and told us off for having a go at the waiter(we didn’t). When the food arrived it was very nice apart from the fact that some things were missing including one full meal. Such a shame about the attitude of the owner as the food was very good. If you don’t get things right accept the criticism,apologise and the sort it out and not have a pop at your customers. Won’t be returning When

Fabulous cozy dog friendly pub with gorgeous food and lovely staff. Very warm welcome from Molly and Risha who looked after us brilliantly. We had some small plates which had beautifully balanced equisite flavours and a naughty but wonderful sticky toffee pudding. We popped in as we were passing not knowing anything about the place, but are so glad we did as it exceeded all our expectations - definately our new favourite place. Thank you guys xxxx ❤️

We came here for drinks and dinner 2 nights running and the fact that we came back a second time speaks volumes. The food is truly amazing but just as good as the food is the fantastic welcome. After 2 visits we feel like locals. Everyone is so friendly and welcoming. We can highly recommend the Red Lion.

Went here over Bank Holiday. Had intended to stay 2hrs but stayed 9hrs to watch entertainment. Wonderful atmosphere, everybody very friendly. Tasted bbq while there which was very tasty. Peter the landlord is a gem, very funny and welcoming and took the trouble to talk to everybody - and I mean everybody - to get to know them

After reading good reviews we were really disappointed! We came for a family sunday lunch, firstly the waitress got my sons order wrong, (beef instead of chicken) which wasn’t a problem as we all make mistakes , the waitress apologised for the mistake but it then took another 20 minutes before his food came out in which I sat eating my dinner alone, I had no roast potatoes on my beef roast and made the waitress aware of this to which she apologised and told me she would bring them out asap , i ate my meal as slow as I could waiting and waiting but I eventually finished my food and asked for the bill, no roast potatoes ever turned up as they had obviously forgotten a second time! We weren’t offered any drinks through the meal or even asked how our food was, we felt like we were totally forgotten about or ignored and to top it off the food was very average After being given the bill at full price I then explained what had happened and they took the kids meals off the bill which was ok but I hate complaining and felt really awkward that I had to explain what had happened like they were totally unaware Such a shame as it’s such a lovely looking little pub,

Last minute decision for Sunday lunch. We weren’t disappointed! Lovely, welcoming host and an epic Sunday lunch. Delicious, scoffed the lot! No room for pud, will need to knock a couple of roast potatoes off our plates next time.

What a gem of a pub!!!! A little impromptu drive in our camper van found us rocking up for dinner at the last minute at this exquisite little pub - sorry, not sorry!!!! Everything from the service to the food was nothing short of spectacular. Thanks to Wendy for looking after us, you are all amazing - we will certainly be back.

Fabulous Mother's day lunch! The food was amazing we both had the beef which was tender and very tasty, it was served with crispy roasties and a good selection of seasonal vegetables. The portions were generous with plenty of meat. The atmosphere and welcome created by Peter and the team is always second to none, nothing is too much trouble and everyone is made to feel special. The pub is full of character, lovely open fireplace and dog friendly, also the prices are very reasonable for home cooked food. Will be back soon.

This lovely pub with restaurant, has become one of our 'go to' places, as it serves the most delicious menu. There is also a great variety of alcohol on offer, and the proprietor, Pete is lovely. He truly does have a business to be very proud of. His hard work and endless dedication is show in the quality of the meals, and the great staff team. Well done!

Don’t think I’ve ever been so excited to get back and to do a review for a new place that we visited today. A familiar place, driven past so many times on the A48, yet the power of an FB add popped up promoting their Sunday lunch. We decided as a 2nd lockdown is imminent that we’d pop over to The Red Lion in Bonvilston. Great car park and a friendly welcome were a pleasing start. Once we’d sat down and damasked the full extent of where we were sitting absolutely got me....it’s quaint, traditional (yet quirky) and cosy feel is so important having done these reviews for the last 18 months. And this is definitely my type of place. PPE is fully adhered to and well spaced out. Fresh flowers and a candle on the table were a lovely touch. Small attention to detail, but just great. The menu came on a chalk board, but we were too late for the lamb shank, which looked amazing when it arrived on another table. We opted for beef and pork cooked dinner. We didn’t wait long before our food arrived....where do I start? So first things first, the presentation was exquisite! Seriously, for a £12.95 meal this was just phenomenal -a full plate of gorgeous, piping hot food. My pork was tender, vegetables superbly cooked, gravy was meaty and tasty, cauliflower cheese, as an extra, was creamy and cooked just right. I don’t like purple cabbage as a rule, but this was lovely and as for the roasties - just as my Nan would make; crispy on the outside and soft and fluffy on the inside. Did I forgot the pureed, crushed swede hidden under the Yorkshire? Mr M’s beef is the best he’s had since i started doing this and that is high praise from him. What a feast, and although full I was dying to see the pudding menu. A great choice was presented, so I opted for lemon meringue pie and Mr M went for sticky toffee with homemade custard. Well when it came out, we were bowled over again. I can’t remember the last time a pudding came out with a flower on it. It was sssooooo good! Tangy lemon filling in a pastry case with a light fluffy meringue piped on top. The sticky toffee pudding sauce was to die for! The pudding was not dense but totally moreish.We had the best time....seriously if you’d like some beautiful, cooked food in a comfortable and warming atmosphere, this place is up there as being one of the best in the Vale we’ve visited. To know Pete, the owner has only been it he manager for 12 months and reigniting an obvious passion for food, which is seen in the quality and the decor. His attention to detail doesn’t go unnoticed. It was so nice to see it being visited by other diners. I really hope people support it if they go back into another lockdown. We will definitely get a takeaway if they are available and have booked in for the Sunday before Christmas.....outstandingly, great experience. Sunday lunch was the best, We had garlic mushrooms to start, followed by a pork and a beef dinner and to finish a cheese board. All of which were extremely tasty, the Sunday roast was the best we have had and We will now not go anywhere else! Service was perfect, welcoming and made us feel at home. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!!!!

I had Sunday roast with my family. It was beautifully cooked, really tasty. The roast beef I had was cooked to perfection. The Red Lion has had a renovation and it feels clean and homely. The service was really efficient and friendly, even to my new little rescue doggies. Thank you Red Lion. I will definitely be returning.

Went with three friends for lunch. They had the gf five bean chilli and I had the cod, chips and mushy peas. My friends enjoyed their meals. The fish was white, the batter was tasty and crispy and they were REAL chips. I cleared my plate. Delicious. Nice coffee ( but no soya milk.) They were exceptionally accommodating and friendly. Service was good and would be really happy to return.

Myself and my partner was there today. We ordered a Sunday lunch pork and beef. After waiting 45 minutes the food came out cold. They took the food back in and after another 10 minutes food arrived on the table. For starters the pork wasn’t cooked, the taste of the meal very bland, the beef dinner again bland in taste and for some reason you tasted burnt food. Service: very very slow, nobody asking between your meal if is everything all right. When I went to pay no apologies at all, and no question has been asked about if everything was all right with your visit. I will not recommend this place to any of my family or friends.

Lovely Pub to visit while the restrictions are slowly lifting. Outside Seating only at this time but thoughtfully planned out with undercover seating for those rainy days.Pleasantly greeted by the proprietor and staff and couldn’t have been more helpful.Limited menu and drinks but plenty of options to choose from. Food was excellent and the drinks kept coming. Think we lost count after the 4th bottle!! Having passed the Red Lion on numerous occasions, we thought we give it a try.Only one other couple in the pub so seating was not an issue.My wife had the curry and I had the gammon. Both of us came to the opinion that the food was nothing special and really average. For what you pay we would not say it is good value for money.Never mind at least we gave in a try.

I visited this gem from a recommendation from a friend. Pleasantly surprised after visiting! Lovely staff; especially the new landlord, Pete, lots of smiles and good chit chat. I ordered the fish and chips and my friend had the seafood tagliatelle, it was cooked to perfection and arrived warm. The fish was lightly battered and crispy, tender to bite into, thoroughly impressed! I ended up staying for a few drinks and got on really well with the clientele... There was live music at 9. The fish is actually fresh from Cardiff Market, Ashton, so I found out. Give this place a go, it won't disappoint. Thumbs up from me and my mucker.

Enjoyed a lovely Sunday lunch at this friendly pub. The landlord gives a big welcome and his staff follow suit. The traditional Sunday lunch was delicious. Husband and I called for lunch today. Lovely welcome. We both had beef dinner. Beautiful beef loads of it too. Served with swede parsnips broccoli green beans sprouts carrots and cabbage Yorkshire pudding too. Everything was really tasty. Had apple pie and custard for dessert tasted like homemade. My partner and I enjoyed an excellent Sunday lunch in this good old fashioned country pub just outside Cardiff. Good choice of meat served with a whole assortment of perfectly cooked vegetables. We followed this with a couple of nice desserts, which had the bonus of being free due to a January promotion. The new landlord, Peter, is very friendly and he and his staff were very attentive to us and all the other customers. Excellent food and very good value.

The starter was warm food served on a cold slate .. ok we thought it's not that bad. Oh how wrong could we have been.My partner ordered sausage and mash, myself the pie.Upon arrival the mash had balsamic vinegar all over it ?? Really, who does this when onion gravy is going on it. My order was wrong .. no chips. When the food was brought back to us my pie was burnt to within an inch of its life and the onion rings where colder than the artic..After speaking to the management and asking what the "green" was in the mash he appeared very rude. I'd had enough paid for my drinks and starters and left.Rude and unhelpful in my opinion. Will not be having a return visit.

Well wasn't expecting this little Gem, An opportune suggestion by a friend to visit this lovely little bistro pub... what a fantastic find on the A48, cosy, comfy and a really lovely NEW owner, friendly and attentive service, AMAZING FOOD cooked fresh, Using top quality produce, it was beautiful presented with a lovely touch of edible flowers to top it off. seafood/stake/chicken/pasta etc. Even Sunday lunch at reasonable prices.

Arrived here on a Saturday afternoon. Really cosy and a lovely old fashion pub.

As a regular customer (Passed & Present) I was disappointed to read negative reviews.
