Moved here a couple of years ago & have driven past loads always promising to visit as looks gorgeous from the outside. So came here for the first time Sunday and found the food to be exceptional! At last we found a pub that can cook roast beef pink!!! I had the duck and was blown away, as for the doughnuts filled with onion jam - I have no words! Puds were home made and utterly gorgeous and service excellent from Hannah. On that premise we booked for my birthday today (Wednesday) for 4 of us and we were not disappointed! Food was incredible again - my fillet steak was out of this world. Service was again very good and I was surprised with a dessert birthday plate. Price point was spot on for such wonderful food & drink in a characterful setting. Definitely my new favourite “foodie” pub on the Island, you’ll be hard pushed to find anything else of this standard.

Away with my friend for the weekend, who has been to Isle of Wight before and frequented this establishment previously thought we should give it a try for Sunday lunch. 😁 Unfortunately, we arrived in the evening and lunch had finished. We should have realised that the clue was on the menu "Sunday Lunch" 🤔😂😂 Still, the menu was excellent, the food was brilliant, the choice of drinks was perfect and what could you say about the staff? Would definitely make it a go-to place when I'm back on the Isle. Well worth a try, far better than could imagine for a small village pub in the middle of nowhere 😉

We booked for 18:45 on a Saturday as that was all that was available as they had a party of 20 booked in. We had duck and the battered haddock followed by ice cream and white chocolate parfait. The duck included a beetroot aspect, which my wife loves, but she likes it fresh not pickled. The chef was more than happy to prepare it without the pickled beetroot and substituted fresh green veg at no extra cost which was great. My battered haddock was melt in the mouth delicious with an excellent home made tartare sauce. My parfait came with a black cherry sorbet and hazelnut brittle and was divine. The service was polite and attentive and we could not really fault the meal. Good value too. Recommended. Note that the car park at the rear is quite small and only holds about 20 cars. A van or large SUV would be a struggle.

Came for lunch after being impressed with ambience and service after calling in for a drink. Nothing is too much trouble and staff are observant but unobtrusive. It is not a plain menu by any means and would not suit some diners with digestive problems. However neither is the food pre cooked but cooked to order. Nothing is hurried which is very welcome. Even the dog enjoyed his doggy ice cream. Not cheap but pure quality.

Went for dinner with my wife and adult son. Booked after reading all the reviews on TA. What a lovely experience. I am a wheelchair user, access is fine, the loo is a bit small, but has handles etc. Might be difficult for someone who cannot stand. I can so ok. Very welcoming, and friendly staff. In fact the whole atmosphere was friendly and relaxed. The food is fantastic👍. We all had two courses, we chose different dishes also. One of the best meals we have had in a while. Unfortunately didn't have room for dessert, am sure would have been good as well. Very reasonable prices to. Clearly have a chef and staff that care and love to cook fantastic food. Well done👍. Can't wait to go back on our next trip.

One of our regular ‘go to’ restaurants when on the island. Went here for our last dinner before the end of our holiday and was a little disappointed. Staff lovely as always, waiter excellent and very helpful. What was a shame was the menu and some of the dishes have gone into the fine dining space and really were not great. A mackerel starter (one of my favourites normally) was covered in a thick weird sauce, not nice honestly. And the fish mains also in lots of sauces and very small pieces of fish. 2 of the family had steaks which were excellent as always. Not sure we’d go again - i just miss a few simpler choices like a burger! And the mains were in general expensive and small - much preferred the menu and food when we had been earlier this year. Lovely pub, great staff, shame about the strange menu and some of the mains. Will be back for sure once we see some of the menu changing back!

We're getting older now and don't go out to pubs very often, so when my son-in-law and daughter suggested lunch at the Red Lion, it was a brilliant surprise - and so was the Red Lion. In context, this was one of my favourite pubs back in the 1960s - in fact I was a child living over the road in Emberley House, and used to play in the yard of the Red Lion it was run then by a real character - Ron Legge whose idea of a 'ploughmans lunch' was to serve half a crusty cottage loaf with half a pound of cheddar cheese, and half a raw onion served in the then stone-floored public bar, where the occasional chicken would peck around your feet - totally brilliant and really rustic, So we were very pleasantly surprised to find that the Red Lion was still, well, not as rustic, but still a fabulous pub. And the lunch menu was really impressive, in that it was ingeniously creative,- a perfect marriage of the familiar with culinary innovations in their pickled sides, with dishes like isle of Wight Beef Crumpets proving to be totally delightful taste treats with triple-cooked chips, complimentary sauces and salads. And we finessed with a perfect double-expresso. And it was a perfect light lunch, served by wonderfully friendly well-informed staff - and the pint of bitter was great too. Thanks Red Lion, you're running a great pub, combining innovation with tradition and style...reminded me of halcyon days with our sail-maker Hylton Mortimer, Fliss Garcia and Milo Lewis back in the day...

We can’t decide if we just didn’t opt for the right/ best options or if it’s a general thing about the food, but we were really disappointed with the food we had at The Red Lion. The starters we had (smoked mackerel) were okay, but looked a lot better than it tasted; the ‘smoked’ flavour was really lacking. We left quite a large amount of this uneaten. We both had fish and chips for the main. Sadly, this seriously did lack flavour; the chips were very crispy, but with little content. The fish was really, really disappointing; almost tasteless and coated in a very, very pale batter. Again, quite an amount of this food was left uneaten. The service was average; staff were genuinely friendly, but no one checked in to ask if our courses were okay, no one came to ask if we wanted another drink (empty drinks not long after main course arrived, no one came to take main courses away or ask if we wanted a dessert menu - we decided we wanted to leave eventually as no one was coming to our table, so we got up and paid). We did try to get staff attention 4 times, but to no avail. I had wanted to say that the main course was not good, but I genuinely could not get a member of staff to the table. After trying several times, I really just wanted to pay and leave. It was such a shame because the food looked great, staff were welcoming and smiled a lot, and the pub is lovely inside. The food really lacked flavour and execution - looked great, tasted average to flavourless.

Main was delicious! The lamb and the tartness of the ratatouille was incredible. The only letdown was the dessert. I ordered the strawberry meringue expecting a sorbet but was met with a gloopy mess. Moreover sections of the dessert tasted savoury and garlicky as if it was assembled alongside someone else’s main. I’ve given 4 stars because the main was so incredible but I can’t give it anymore with the disappointing dessert.

After a disastrous expensive outing to the Hut the night before we went to the red Lion in trepidation. An excellent choice! Total absence of intrusive inappropriate 'background' music started us off in a positive mood when perusing the comprehensive menu. Winelist had avoided giving in to 'fashion' and was reasonably priced. Food was well cooked and interesting - all 4 of us had the meal we wanted and enjoyed. We could not manage puddings as the quantity of strarters+mains was more than adequate. The bill was half the cost of the Hut for a superior meal in pleasant ambiance!

Two of our party are vegans so enjoyed the tomato soup, which included a courgette and a side of focaccia. The main course was the pasta with mushrooms, mint and pea, accompanied by the best triple cooked chips you’ll ever taste. If you have room left try the apple crumble and vegan ice cream. FOOD POISONING FROM DINNER HERE 5th May 2024 - bank holiday weekend. Having seen this place in the michelin app we were quite excited to eat here and got a last minute reso just before kitchen closed. Oh how we regret that. Within an hour / few hours on the drive back home I threw up the entire dinner. Im sure we got served something that had been sitting. But this is ridiculous. Answer to the reply: — The fact that you attack my other reviews just make me want to engage less. — The fact that my wife had food poisoning in a fast food restaurant in london, and me at yours is completely irrelevant. — I have written 30 ish reviews. Yes usually the bad ones. I dine out 2-3 times a week, so clearly i review only where there is a really bad experience. The fact that we found you in the michelin guide is even worse. However happy to help - so here are pics of what I ate.

Where do I start! On arrival the staff welcomed us and we sat in a nice garden area with a pre-dinner drink. My pint of Otter bitter was lovely. We were taken through the menu at our table inside and I had the Stone bass and my wife had the cod dish. Both were amazing, beautifully presented and the construction of flavours were something else. The chef knows what he,s doing that's for sure. For dessert, my wife had the apple crumble with cinnamon and ginger served on a base of what I think was filo pastry, delicious. I had the cheese board served with sourdough crackers, oatcakes, apple, chutney and a small square of lemon cake which all worked well together. The shiraz wine we chose was excellant and the whole meal very reasonably priced. Cannot reccomend this place highly enough and we would definately return. Massive thanks to the Red Lion for a memorable meal.

Nice pub, nice staff, clearly verrry popular-we got the last table, but it was just a bit disappointing! My partner had the fish and chips which was 'fine but nothing special', especially the triple cooked chips which were so crispy there was actually no fluffy potato inside. I had the vegan option and while major props to it not being a chickpea curry, the execution of my 'gnocchi' was 5 huge flavourless dry balls of dough. Everyone around us seemed to be really enjoying their food though, so maybe we just ordered the weak links on the menu. Did think the selection of beers on tap was really lacking too. Did I see an AA rosette and something about Michelin star on the menu? That must justify the prices.

Service was a little frosty. The chosen main (called Squash) was very small - more like a starter - and consisted of an over cooked mixture of squash and gnocchi (deep fried at some point?). Not tasty and small portions. I was expecting a lot better considering this pubs reputation but was very disappointed. I suspect quality of the food might explain the slight defensiveness of the staff who, to their credit, kept on the right side of professional.

This is the sort of traditional pub we've known and patronised for five decades. Lovely atmosphere, good beer, great staff. Perfect for a light lunch, or so we thought. We both plumped for smoked mackerel, served with beetroot and apple - all ingredients we really like - and have eaten on countless such occasions. What we were served was not what we expected. The dish came in a shallow round earthenware dish of approx. 15cm with straight sides. Lining the base was an off-white smooth puree about 6mm deep, with the consistency of custard, containing what might have been a few flakes of mackerel and minute lumps of pale beetroot. This was evenly topped with an aspic-style jelly about 2mm thick with slices of apple on top so thin as to be translucent. It was as appetising as cat food blended with baby food , and as nauseating. Neither my wife nor I could manage even half the meagre portion. Heston Blumenthal himself couldn't have done a more unnecessary job on a traditional pub classic if he'd tried. Thankfully we also ordered paprika skinny fries which were edible. Ordinary chips were, of course, not available. And no, this wasn't April the First or some of Lord Sugar's apprentices trying to be different. It was just very wrong.

We had aimed to dine here on Tuesday but car trouble delayed our eventual arrival until Thursday and, oh my, it was well worth the wait! The pub has a lovely friendly atmosphere with bags of character. We were seated in a window nook which whilst still very much part of the pub hubbub, still allowed us a modicum of privacy. I had the pigeon with egg yolk and teeny mushrooms. How unctuous this all was and what skill the chef must have to create a crispy outer yolk shell with a gorgeous ooze of yolk within. The pigeon was tender and the dish just sang with flavours! If this was the starter it heralded greater things to come! Next I had the beef and ale pie in a suet crust with greens, mashed potato and gravy. Again absolutely delicious. The flavours were beefy, rich and velvety. I hoovered it all up! How can the humble mash potato be so transformed!? The chef is a wizard I thought. I was determined to get to dessert and so I did, ordering the much anticipated sticky toffee pudding with honeycombe ice cream. The sponge was moist, and had a warming heat of spices generously doused in gleaming rich toffee sauce. The freshness of sweet honeycomb ice cream perfectly balanced the pudding cleverly guiding the dish away from being heavy. What a grand finale this pudding was to the most perfect of meals. I wish I was a local!

We were in IOW for a month and tried most pubs, cafes and restaurants in this area. The Red Lion had good beer and was a lovely traditional pub. We enjoyed a couple of visits having drinks. One Friday evening we booked dinner but the experience was poor. We ordered a cheese soufflé starter for my wife and one bass fillet and one suet steak pie. After about 20 minutes a single plate with a couple of tiny balls of what looked like choux pastry with grated cheese on arrived. It was plonked in the table without explanation. We assumed this was a chef’s treat (amuse-bouche) while we waited. Minutes later the main course arrived. It appears the cheese soufflé order got lost. We raised the issue but clearly the staff were untrained so there was no point asking them what was going on. We ate the main course and decided not to risk a dessert. Upon paying we were charger £9.50 for the “doughnuts” served at the outset. I paid and decided not to make a fuss but never to return. As to the main courses, the bass was served only warm, and the meat in the suet pie was tasteless, only the gravy gave it any flavour. The Otter beer was great. Not sure why there is a Michelin a claim on the menus? Perhaps for the beer!!

We have been coming to the Red Lion for many years , but this time we were visiting someone in a Nursing home near by and stopped in for a drink. We looked at the Menu and decided to have a starter each. My wife had a 3 baked Cheese Souffle and I had a Beef Crumpet. Both delicious, the food has always been above the standard of other pubs on the Island, and we are returning in a few days time after another Nursing home visit !

This best burger ever. 100% quality beef and gorgeous fries. I had the white chocolate and passion fruit cheesecake to follow. Amazing. Definitely worth a visit.

Lovely atmosphere, food was delicious! Very dog friendly. Parking was good, it’s in a nice area. An all round lovely pub for food or drinks.

Not our first visit to the Red Lion but probably the last! We went for Sunday lunch with friends but were disappointed. We shared the Parmesan truffle donuts but they were chewy. We all chose the roast beef and the beef was incredibly rare… it was so thinly sliced and was ‘stringy’. The red cabbage was like jam, it was so sweet. The potatoes and cauliflower cheese were good but none of us ate much and we mentioned to the Waitress that it wasn’t great but no one came to talk to us… which we thought rather odd Such a shame as it’s such a pretty pub

Visited after overhearing a member of staff at the Isle of Wight Gin Distillery raving about this hidden gem. Went for lunch on a quiet January afternoon and thought it was so good we went back on a Friday evening for dinner. The whole dining experience was sublime! If we’d have found it earlier in the week we’d have gone through the whole menu.

Excellent food and good beers. However, diffident, unsmiling staff behind the bar today who made no effort to make one feel welcome and who seemed to enjoy being slightly inflexible (you MUST order at your table, if you don’t have a table number, go and find it) and mildly grumpy. Shame, lovely pub otherwise.

Disappointed that there was no sea food choice as apparently the chef has a seafood allergy. The food we ultimately chose was good and very tasty. The staff and service was good. Nowhere on website does it say “no seafood” and we only found out at point of ordering.

Booked a table for lunch here on Boxing Day. The options for food and drink were great, and our chosen dishes and tipples were fabulous. The menu included numerous game dishes, which suited my husband and me. We had a pigeon starter and venison for mains; these dishes and the others we had were truly delicious and served beautifully. All this was topped off with friendly and attentive service. I'd thoroughly recommend The Red Lion.

It looks like a typical village pub, BUT it serves the food of a high end restaurant, the best lunch we had on the island.

A friendly pub catering for diners and locals alike. We shared a starter of mousse. My partner had the steak and ale pie which she found excellent - and the vegetable were good too. I went for the Confit of Duck. What I received, in my opinion, was a duck breast (not confit) but, to be fair, it was very good and served in an imaginative way with suitable vegetables and was thoroughly enjoyed. The only disappointment was the wine - a French Merlot which was thin, acidic and tired. I spent my life in the wine trade and like to think I know a good wine from a bad one. I only visit the Island once a year and will continue to dine at the Red Lion. The chef has imagination - so often lacking.

Just dropped in for a casual lunch and we were gobsmacked at just how good everything was. Sean Jeffers' team, including Nick Gerring, formerly of the White Lion in Niton, cook astounding food; exhileratingly good grub! Don't know how they do it. And the front of house is calm, efficient and friendly - all very joined-up management. In truth, the best food we've ever had on the IoW

Not sure about some of the poor reviews submitted but we visited for Sunday lunch and it was fantastic - had the beef crumpet, roast beef and the chocolate Malteser cremaux with honeycomb and it was delicious. What a gem of a place - wish we had a pub serving this standard of food where we live. All I can say is lucky Freshwater and IOW residents

My family and I came for dinner here last Saturday night. There were 6 of us in total. We were greeted by friendly and attentive staff. We tried a variety of dishes between us including the Parmesan doughnuts, beef crumpets, tartlet, burger, vegan gnocchi, and suet pastry steak + ale pie. We were going to skip dessert but couldn’t resist trying a few between us!! The crumble was perfect for a autumnal evening and the ‘Malteser’ dessert was a masterpiece!! The chefs are extremely talented. Every single dish was beautiful presented, and tasted fantastic! You could tell the produce used was all of great quality- they even have their own fruit n veg garden at the back! This isn’t the first time we’ve visited and certainly won’t be the last! 5*

Ryde 2022 illuminated carnival night was a disaster. We queued for 25 minutes to order drinks and food only to be told that the choices we wanted were unavailable. Later queued for 30 minutes to get more drinks and during that time it was announced that there was no more food available this was at 7:30pm. The accommodating staff were working very hard and did best they could but there wasn't enough of them to meet the demand. It wasn't that busy either. I tried to persuade our friends not to go there because of the terrible experiences before especially at group events. We also were guests at a wedding last year (2023) and the food ran out after around 60% had visited the buffet. There were excuses a plenty including the guests were being greed which was a lie. The event was a shambles and the Hotel Ryde Castle is a disgrace to the hospitality industry.

Amazing roast dinner and dessert! Lovely staff, very kind, helpful, and understanding. We are coming back again for sure!!! Really recommend this little gem, can’t believe it wasn’t more packed! We spilt gravy everywhere and staff were very helpful to help my friends who burnt themselves, and moved us tables so we could get a clean start! Staff were amazing ❤️
