Red Lion in Shropshire

We are from out of country and visited the Red Lion for the second time in less than a week because our first time was so good! The second time was just as good as the first. We all had a different dish each time and all the food was delicious. The young ladies serving us were prompt and nice and the bartender Margaret was delightful. Delicious, homemade food with cold beer…what’s not to love? Wish we lived closer!

Took a group of 14 there for Sunday lunch. Everyone enjoyed their food and it was really good value for money. The service was a touch slow but they were busy. Would recommend.

I came here with my work colleague’s pre Christmas and apart from mixing drinks order up several couldn’t eat their dinner due to over spiced red cabbage on their meals. My chips were old and hardly warm. Not sure I would visit again as toilets not good and furniture old and our dated

Went for dinner on the 07/09/24,it's no way restaurant food but is wholesome pub grub,I had the duck sizzler with fries,the get massive portions my fries came on a dinner plate and the plate was full 🙂,my Mrs had the veggie lasagna which she said was lovely,staff are very attentive and look after u brilliantly,will defo b bk. Meal was overated cod was supposed to crispy it's was doughy and undercooked and expensive for what it was told we couldn't order for 1/2hour as it was busy

Have never been before but dropped in today as a family of 4. Kids menu was great, loads of vegetarian/vegan options, friendly staff. Was really pleased that there was open customer WiFi - a rarity. Definitely will return.

The pub was excellent. We are on a canal boat holiday along the Llangollen canal. We moored up in Ellesmere and walked up to the town. There's a pool table and board games. Kids loved it. Food really great and good value too. Might try and visit on way back if we can.. another game of pool!

Good honest food. Big portions. The mixed grill at £18.50 was more than worth the money. Home cooked and reasonably priced.

On arrival, there is a tiny car park for the b&b guests. Plenty of pay display car parks about. The menu was huge. Food was amazing and excellent value for money. There were a few minor negatives but as the food was so good, it feels wrong to mention them, but that’s what reviews are for. There was a long wait for our order to be taken. We arrived at our table for about 18:25 we received our meals at approx 19:15 …. Good food is worth the wait. The check back was completed, when we’d almost finished, empty plates were left on the table, for what felt like an eternity. The staff did clear other tables where people had left. Finally our table was cleared and the dessert menu arrived. Ordered dessert and more drinks… the drinks never arrived. The desserts came out and were devoured using soup spoons 😂 finally left at approx 20:45

Visit for three consecutive afternoons this week. All totally amazing. Every meal we both had was excellent. The staff are amazing nothing is too much trouble every one was courteous friendly and extremely professional. Wine was very reasonable in today’s climate. All I’m all about is 5 star experience every time. If in Ellesmere this is the place to go.

Food was fantastic. Prices are great. Portions are massive. We were visiting from a local lodge site beer garden was great sat in the sun eating food.

Tried this as not many places open in Ellesmere on a Monday evening. Food was just ok, service was patchy (some good staff and some pretty clueless) and decor was very tired.

Food was amazing, great portion sizes and very well priced. All staff very friendly and prompt service. We came as a group of 3 and all had dinner and dessert which we all enjoyed. Would definitely come again.

Just been for meal here with a friend. Really pleased with our meals both were delicious and home cooked. Piping hot and tasty. Great menu to choose from with reasonable prices. Staff very friendly and welcoming. Can't wait to come back to try some more items from the menu

Made a late table booking for 2 on Friday night; busy, but accommodated with a welcoming smile by the pleasant staff. A couple of pints of the new Thwaites IPA and a couple of super-tasty ‘build your own’ burgers were ordered and swiftly served…. WOW! Thick, juicy patties with the additional chosen fillings piled into a logo-seared brioche bun, with seasoned triple cooked chips on the side and a fat battered onion ring. I reckon these burgers are up there with the best I’ve had - well cooked, put together well, with ‘all the trimmings’ included. (I went with single beef patty, bacon, cheddar, American mustard and ketchup - simple but easy to get wrong!). Ellesmere’s answer to Five Guys? I think it’s actually better, cheaper, and doesn’t need a long car journey to get there. We’ll be back soon!

Been here a few times great value, good food and the portions are very good. It is now our go to place for a dinner out. Parking can be a bit of a pain but worth the effort

We walked in on Easter Sunday and it was clearly very busy, but the staff managed to fit us in. We couldn’t be more grateful! All the staff were so attentive and lovely, we really couldn’t have asked for better service! Our food arrived very promptly although we were warned there could be a wait this didn’t happen. The beef joint was so soft it literally melted in your mouth. Our children who are very fussy eaters even ate it all. The price is brilliant, the service fantastic and the food top quality. I really think we’d struggle to beat it in the area. We will return when next in the area.

We saw the reviews and wanted to book our Easter dinner with Red Lion. However, the food was very disappointing. The calamari was difficult to cut, and the coating just fell off, I've never experienced calamari like that before. The sauce, which I think was meant to me mayo, was like paste no quality. We also had camembert, which came out overcooked and hardly any cheese. We complained after as we were hungry, and just wanted to give our thoughts in hoping our dinner would be excellent, but the waitress was very dismissive and told me I should have complained before, which is fine. I did not want anything from it, just to have a great dinner. When the mains came out, my roast potato's tasted bland. I was expecting a crispy, fluffy roast potato. No Yorkshire, only came with a beef dinner. The meat did not taste as though it came from a joint. Vegetables were a mix of hard and soft. The mixed grill, the meat did not come out as asked, chips looked like they'd been recooked, they were dry and brown. So when complaining before eating the meal this time, and as requested to do so by the staff, my plate was taken away without asking what I wanted to do, and the chef was called. In honesty, at that point, before my plate was taken away, i probably just would have eaten it but i think its fair to commnent on my food, its what im paying for. The chef used intimidation and did not want to believe the food was overcooked and bland. We came to Ellesmere for a holiday, so we wanted to experience a great Sunday meal. Even our receipt for the drinks was wrong given two different prices for the same cocktail. if you ate going to Ellemere, I recommend thr Boat House.

The Red Lion Ellesmere is a fantastic place for food. The meal was delicious and cooked to perfection. The staff were amazing. It was an all rounder lovely evening, highly recommend.

We are leaving here tomorrow after staying for the last four nights and I can not say enough about this lovely place! Rooms are clean and bed is comfortable, breakfast is A1 and of that isn’t enough, evening meals are amazing and huge and the staff are polite, attentive and adorable! Came here 11 years ago and I must say the improvement is clear to see! Already decided to come back in the Summer! Thank you so much! Martin & Tina Stretton

Just popped in for a quiet meal and refreshments. Fantastic service, brilliant food and drink, all at a very reasonable price.

Recently had sunday dinner here. I had the chicken roast dinner and my wife had the gammon roast. We shared whitebait and pitta with tzatziki dip for starters. Starters were excellent, decent portions and nicely presented. Both our roasts were gorgeous, and good sized portions. Staff very friendly and helpful. A thoroughly deserved 5 star rating 👍

My partner and I visited for a Sunday roast, and it was outstanding! Definitely one of the best Sunday roasts I’ve had in the area. Good sized portions and very delicious. Good service from a young, friendly team. The pub has a nice calm atmosphere, despite being very busy. We will definitely return again soon

I had a wonderful Kebab here and the price for meal and drinks were fair and reasonable! It's also one of the best kebab I've had this side of Europe. Myself and dad had a flat white from here in August and we both agreed that this was the best coffee in the area. The atmosphere in the Pub is lively, welcoming and cozy for all. From toddlers to wise, witty ladies and gentlemen the Red Lion covers all grounds. Been here a couple of times over this year and the Staff have always been, without fault. so helpful, chatty and do alot for you! To follow up my previous comment, the food I've had here has been wonderful and genuinely can not fault it. I wish the Red Lion and all Staff a wonderful New Year and to keep up the good work for all.

Had a Turkey Xmas Dinner and it was lovely, nice xmas vibe inside and the waitress was very kind and helpful. Definitely recommend.

We visited for lunch on my birthday and the establishment looked nice and friendly. However whilst the menu was inviting my meal was below par. The portions were too large and the meal was not very warm. The steak and ale pie was nice and contained carrots but the accompanying vegetables were also carrots. Lots of waste due to over sized portions. The cider was very nice. The toilet Shen flushed made a horrendous noise possibly because of air in the pipes. Unfortunately we will not be visiting again.

Four of us ate here in the restaraunt. Our food was delicious & ample portions. Dessert menu not very inspirational & dosent really change. Our only real complaint tho was how cold we felt sitting there. Draughty and cold. Will def be back though.

We went for a family birthday, it was mine and my partners first time there and we're very pleased. All the food was very reasonably priced and even offered smaller versions of the mains for those who couldn't handle larger portions. We all ordered something different and we were all very happy with our food. I had the surf and double turf and my partner the Greek kebab which were both good portions and we both enjoyed. My only criticism would be that a few of menus were a little dirty and could be wiped in-between customers.

Absolutely fantastic meal. The Greak chicken was to die for. Friendly and welcoming staff always with a smile on their face. Can’t wait to come back for the next visit!

We visited this pub on our way back from wales on Saturday evening (28/10/23) the pub was busy upon entering and we hadn’t booked a table to eat. We were starving!!!!!! We had planned to stop in Ellesmere when we left our lodge because I remember visiting the mere as a young girl and we can’t describe how grateful we were to the team for squeezing us in because there didn’t seem to be much else in the area. The staff were friendly, and we felt like we had our own tour guide when we asked one of the girls a question. Extremely helpful. The food was beautiful, my partner had steak and said it was up to Miller and Carter standards!!!! We really couldn’t fault our experience. So thank you red lion! Maybe next time, we will just have to take you up on the offer and stay with you guys instead x

Visited the Red Lion after a walk around the mere. The male member of staff was very friendly (sorry didn’t get his name) we visited with our two grandaughters and our dog. The food was okay, The haddock light bite was adequate, the tuna mayo filling in the jacket potato was a bit runny and potato rather firm , but edible and served with a large side salad, the child’s meal of sausage mashed potato and peas looked nice. The toilets are clean,. The pub welcoming and we would visit again for a drink.
