Second visit since refurbishment, this time for Sunday Lunch. The service and quality of food were excellent again. Great beer too. The pub has a real buzz about it now and I hope it goes from strength to strength. I don’t understand the comments about it being expensive; it isn’t. I do understand the current cost of living pressures and the impact of inflation, but the costs here are in line with other similar establishments and reflect the quality. This is a great local resource and I’m looking forward to Pie and Pud night!

So I thought I would go back and try again , and yes it was lovely and they even added chicken to the curry !!!!! Which is great however would have loved it in the curry not a separate piece of chicken balanced on the top , I know you are not going to please everyone and I feel I’m being a bit pedantic about it, however I would definitely be back. Perhaps more meat dishes and less fish 🙂

Lovely location and food, staff lovely, but at times over the top, asking "guys" is food ok constantly! Also, "guys" isn't the kind of wording to us when talking to people in their 50's! We asked for salad advised no salad, then abut 15 minutes later we saw salad going out on an order placed after ours!

Great food and excellent service. The owners have done a fantastic job on refurbishing the pub, lovely beer garden outside overlooking the beautiful countryside, perfect for a summers evening. The food was delicious and very reasonably priced for the high quality. The staff were friendly and attentive, nothing was too much trouble. Looking forward to coming back to the Red Lion to try a Sunday roast soon!

We were staying local and needed somewhere to eat/drink as we hadn’t planned anything for our first night. The Red Lion was recommended to us by our host as it was close by and also dog friendly which was ideal. When we arrived it was lovely and toasty inside with a log fire and it had a proper ‘pub’ feeling. We ordered from the 2 for £12 menu which was absolutely fantastic quality pub grub and totally blew our expectations out of the water, we were both very impressed by how nice the food was and the portion size! Would definitely visit again if I was passing or staying nearby.

I hate to write a negative review because everyone is just trying to make a living. But this was pretty bad. We were a group of 9 which visited mid week. They weren’t offering the “eat out to help out scheme” but we took advantage of the 2 for £12 meal deal - because it was the only thing on offer. The staff couldn’t answer any questions about the food. The steak was over cooked when it was asked for rare. The rest of the meals were poor too. The chips had been cooked in dirty oil as they were covered in black bits. No ice in the drinks. Dirty cutlery. Horrid condiments. Took almost an hour for the food to arrive. And a complete lack of social distancing from the staff. If we hadn’t been tired and hungry we would have walked away.

We slept so comfortably, and shower was great. Breakfast was phenomenal, and done to perfection. We also had extra tea and coffee and toast. The landlord, John was brilliant, so friendly and checked in with us regularly, just to make sure we were ok. The price was very reasonable, and we got our moneys worth and more. After reading about The Comet pub on tripadviser we thought we would go for a meal, as on holiday locally for a few days.As we entered the pub we were told very swiftly and in an abrupt manner that dogs aren't welcome. So, we drove around the corner to the Red Lion. We were made very welcome, and taken into the lounge where we were taken good care of. The steak meal was to a high standard at a reasonable price. After eating we took ourselves into the bar, and had a few drinks in a nice friendly atmosphere. We wish the new manager well. We will be back if we are in the area again.

Since family were visiting from Manchester, we decided to try the Red Lion, our nearest pub,for our evening meal tonight as the new management have only recently taken over and have been serving food for only a couple of days. We were made to feel welcome straight away and offered drinks. The Boon Doggle Ale was particularly good. Once seated we were not rushed or pressured to decide what to order and our selections were adapted to our preferences. It seems that nothing was too much trouble and the serving staff were pleasant and friendly. Steaks, salads, fish and mixed grill options were available this evening and we were all happy with our meals. Overall a pleasant visit and especially good considering the short time the new team have had to settle in and get going. We look forward to many more visits and meals in the near future.

Difficult to review as we stayed in one of the 'apartments' just as the new owners were taking over. Made welcome and promised a few things - which never materialised over the 3 days we were there - and never saw the owners again. It was Hay festival so accommodation was scarce and expensive, so comparatively this was cheap. Breakfast was a learning experience for the staff and did improve.

My parents live in one of the nearby villages and I'd wanted to visit this little pub for some time. The Red Lion is in the centre of the village and is a nice old building. Inside, it's like stepping back in time to pubs I visited in my misspent youth. A friendly lady served us and handed out lunch menus. A nice selection of lunchtime food with a few specials too. We had the Mac Cheese and a Mushroom Omlette respectively. Nicely presented and well cooked food; nothing too challenging for the kitchen though. For beer lovers, not a great selection: Lancaster Bomber was the best of a bad lot (I am spoilt being a poncey Southerner, we have craft beer everywhere!). The owners have been in residence for a short time and are already filling the place in the evenings by all accounts. It's good to see a village pub doing well in what are still challenging times for the industry.

We went on a Saturday evening and were pleasantly surprised to find it quiet, and were greeted by a very polite friendly young lady. Firstly, the beer I ordered was very agreeable, and could quite easily have had several more. The menu itself is traditional country pub fare, and it was done very well, we had cod goujons and duck liver pate, followed by Salt and Pepper Wings and Cod and chips, the biggest complement I can pay is the Cod and chips were as good as any I've had outside Yorkshire. The overall bill was very reasonable and will definitely be going again and given that the new owners are trying to restore the reputation which has had a battering over the past few tenants, I would suggest you give it a go and make your own judgment

We were a party of six adults and two children (5yr old boy and 8yr old girl). We were welcomed in the most friendly manner possible and excellently fed Sunday Lunch. It was the first time that they had opened the restaurant since they took over this old and very attractive pub. It was not "tarted up", a fact of which I highly approve. We liked the open wood fire.I would have liked to see some local beer on draught but the pint that I had was well looked after so I can't really complain.I have given a 4 star rating for value for money because I don't know. My son paid the bill and I am too polite to ask. What I liked most was the friendly atmosphere and the good food. They treated the children with kindliness and consideration. Mind you, the children were well behaved and very polite so they didn't test staff patience but I would guess that they would be good with children of all types. The Sunday Lunch was top quality. I had pork, tradiitionally prepared with the usual trimmings and veg and plenty of it. Come to think of it, there was no crackling!Do book early at popular times, though. Stayed here with family for 2 nights and I was unfortunately given room 2 to endure 2 of the worst nights sleep I've ever had in a B&B. DO NOT accept room 2. The best way to describe the bed is to imagine a 15 year old mattress which belonged to a 40 stone chap before it ended up in room 2. Bloody awful. Apparently rooms 3 and 4 had a comfy bed. The walls are also paper thin and the floor boards are the ridiculously creeky, therefore you will not get to sleep until everyone else is asleep and I guarantee you will be awoken when the room above decides to bang their way to the toliet/wardrobe/sink/window/back to the bathroom or just round in circles to p**s you off. The whole accommodation block needs a renovation, every door bangs shut, especially the doors anywhere near room 2. On the plus side breakfast was reasonable with tasty bacon but there isn't much choice. My advice is to buy a tent or stay elsewhere.

Went last week with friends at lunch time.It was lateish in the afternoon so not many people there. The food was very good I had good old sausage and mash and the sausages were delicious. Our friends each had a burger and commented on how good they were. It's a real old fashioned country pub with no pretence at being anything other than that.Very enjoyable

Thought we'd give it another go as it has changed hands again. We had the curry as it was on the special, the Madras was very good, not sloppy or too hot, rice good too but no offer of nan or poppadom, pickles or chutney. The house curry was quite sloppy though. Tried the home made desserts, pana cota nice but blackcurrant coulis was more like jam. Bread & butter put was lovely taste but quite solid - it would have bounced!

Was impressed with the building and the service the young waiter gave us .Lunch arrived my husband ordered Beef and i Lamb .The Lamb was shredded like pulled Pork and in three little circles .My husbands Beef was so tough and unable to chew .Mentioned it to the young man was told he would tell chef as i suggested cutting it thinner so we could get a knife through. When we paid Bar maid asked if we enjoyed our meal husband said Beef was to tough ..was told it would be better next time as she had other complaints .Not to worry never again

The pub appeared to be a local favorite. When I arrived there were several family present and everyone seemed to know each other. I was seated in the dinning room with another party. They also knew the owners of the pub. everyone seemed to be friends. As the evening progressed, singing could be heard from the pub area. Everyone seemed to be having a great time.I ordered a amazing goats cheese and onion tart which was exceptional, and the fish and chips and was very satisfied. The food was very fresh. The proprietors were extremely kind. It was obvious that I was not a local! I would definitely return.

Sorry Michelle, I think you know full well that it was your pub, to try to deflect this shows character, is this your website http://redlionmadleyhereford.co.uk/find-us sort it out, it has your contact details and address on but is not a picture of your pub, Its up to yo whether you take our comments on board, but I will say one more time, the service was awful, a double serving bar, bar maid spent more time in the tap room side chatting ignoring waiting customers in the restaurant side...we got the right place don't treat us like were stupid.

My family has been going to this pub for years but last week I paid my first visit and was truly impressed. It is a lovely building and the bar staff (just one charming gentleman on the lunchtime I visited - he was very witty about his travails with the coffee machine) are attentive without being fussy or intrusive, and there was a lovely Rhodesian ridgeback dog present, so this is a canine-friendly place. Great atmosphere. I had excellent moule mariniere (my only complaint was the lack of a spoon to slurp up the delicious stock, I could have asked, of course), followed by the best local gammon steak and excellent triple-cooked chips and a wonderful sticky toffee pudding (light and not too sweet, enabling me to enjoy the luxurious caramel sauce), Other companions had a superb soup, fragrant open lasagne of wild mushrooms and spinach and a smoked salmon salad. The Red Lion shows how far pubs in the Wye valley have come. Excellent food and welcome. I shall return.

called in for a lunch and was very pleasantly surprised. Delicious sandwiches served by friendly staff. Not a big fan of mars tons beer but it was ok. One small niggle was the wooden platters the food was served on. The food was too good for that should have been on plates.

The write up in the Brit Stops magazine boasted of special food and fine real ale. It was true on both counts and the hospitality of the staff and locals was also memorable. My wife selected a gammon steak, she described it as the best she's ever had. Unusually for me I tried their burger and hand carved chips, it was a great choice!

After reading all the excellent reviews, took the family here for Sunday lunch, firstly thought we were in the wrong place due to web site pics, the bar service was appalling, I will be kind, the food was awful, perhaps because we ordered at 1pm to be served at 2pm, burnt Yorkshire puddings, very chewy beef, atmosphere nil. Over £90 bill will not be back, now get your friends to do more brill reviews, horrible experience !

Visited the lion recently as a group of 8 ranging from 3 weeks old to...a lot older! From the off the service was really attentive with orders being taken quickly. The menu was traditional pub food and all sounded really good. Between us we managed to order many things on the menu (soup, pate, steaks, burgers, panna cotta and chocolate brownie amongst other things) and everything was really tasty and well presented. Portion size was good too! Service continued to be excellent throughout and as my 3 week old decided to wake up as my main arrived, a member of staff even offered to occupy him while I ate my food! Couldn't ask for better service than that!Super friendly and really good food made for a great evening. We'll definitely be returning soon.

Stayed over with a friend for a night as we visited the Hay festival. Though we arrived late in what seemed to be the middle of a very busy evening the staff were lovely, very friendly and approachable. Room was very comfortable, cosy, everything catered for, clean too. Quiet area, couldn't even hear next door who arrived on the same night. Breakfast in the morning was nice too. Room and breakfast for the price we had was great. Can't stress how friendly they were, would definitely go back should we make another trip to Hay :)

On entry to the pub we bumped into a lady we can only assume is the landlady who helped us to our seats, she was just so welcoming especially to our little girl who appreciated this to . Then we had some colouring to do whilst orders are taken. This was on a Sunday lunch around 2:30 . Two roast beef and a roast chicken for my daughter all food was excellent with great service . Very glad we tried the red lion out randomly as we will 100% be back for more the roast potatoes especially are the best I have ever eaten. Only disappointment no sticky toffee pudding and very limited on ice cream but apart from that Just great thank you

We went there last night to celebrate my birthday. The waitress was lovely, the service was prompt and efficient and we both really enjoyed our meals; rib eye steak cooked exactly as we liked it, and the thrice-cooked beef dripping chips were some of the best I'd ever had. Gooey chocolate brownies with ice cream for desserts were yummy! Lovely old pub and friendly atmosphere. I highly recommend!

New owners have made a huge difference already. The food now is excellent I had Scallops with Black pudding, Chorizo and Pea puree, absolutely the best I have ever had. All of us enjoyed all courses and will be back as we can walk to the pub. It is a little pricey for Pub Grub but it is better quality than average so probably fair. Service is a little slow but I think will improve as they find their feet. Well done most enjoyable.

Heard that the Red Lion was under new management so popped in on a whim at lunch time today. The menu seemed fairly limited.I had the Chicken,Ham and Leek pie with chips. It was one of the nicest I've tasted. The pie crust was wafer thin and the chips, which were more like mini roast spuds, were crispy on the outside and fluffy inside. The pie was packed with meat and was delicious. There was a bit of a wait for the meal because it was obviously not a production line pie but well worth the wait.My wife settled for a starter of wild pigeon which she enjoyed.I believe there is a more comprehensive evening menu which we will try in the near future. I think that if the menu stated that there was a wait for food because it was all freshly made then customers would know what to expect.I wish the new owners well because we live just a few minutes away and welcome a good restaurant on the doorstrp.

Recently moved in to the village and had been told of the reputation so just had to try for ourselves. We were made to feel welcome and when what I wanted wasnt on the menu the chef came out to speak to us as I can only eat certain things. We discussed my needs and came up with a suitable meal. The food we had was lovely. Could tell it was all freshly cooked. Lovely presentation and great atmosphere. Open fires certainly gave it the homely feel. Have been back since for another meal and have no doubt we will be back many more times.

There is a new menu and the Red Lion is under new management. Husband and I had lunch there this week and it was excellent. Beautifully presented, fresh and delicious. (Local sausage with stilton in toasted ciabatta, and steak and brie in granary bread, both with dressed side salad and handmade coleslaw.)It was nice to see that familiar and friendly staff from the previous team are still there and also great to meet equally friendly and helpful new staff members. Looking forward to eating there again and highly recommend the menu.
