We celebrated a family special occasion with the 5 course tasting menu. Daisy was very friendly, helpful and accommodating when making the necessary arrangements including dietary requirements and on the night all staff were wonderful and made us feel very comfortable indeed. We were fortunate to have the private dining room which made it even more delightful. The food was simply amazing and it is difficult to pick a favourite dish. Wine pairing was well selected and the staff very knowledgeable. We can’t wait for our next visit!

Our stay at The Red Lion was absolutely perfect. We were celebrating our anniversary and went for the tasting menu. Each course was delicious and Brittany's recommended wines paired beautifully. Our room was lovely! It had an amazing roll top bath, but that didn't get used because the shower was soooo good. In fact the room had all the modern comforts you could hope for and still felt like a countryside getaway. So quiet! We especially enjoyed waking up to a family of swans floating down the river only a few metres from our veranda. Thank you so much for the perfect night away.

Hotel: We had a delightful overnight stay at the Red Lion. Our room, which was in a modern purpose built lodge about 30 seconds walk from the pub, was well-appointed and comfortable, but the highlight was the private view over the River Avon, sitting quietly under a willow tree in the late afternoon sunshine and watching the lazy river roll by. I even spotted a kingfisher flashing past in her iridescent blue and orange . Beautiful. Food: Dinner - we opted for the a la carte menu rather than the tasting menu (both the same price under our B&B and dinner offer.) The warmed crab tart was exceptional, like an outrageously delightful quiche. Both chicken and cod fish mains were perfectly cooked and presented. My dessert was a huge profiterole filled with peach and vanilla creme and strawberry. Wine: we opted for a full-bodied Goats Do Roam white, reasonably priced at £31. Service was informal, helpful and friendly and the ambience was relaxed and fun. Breakfast: I read the earlier review alluding that a Premier Inn breakfast was better - which I can vouch is not true. Claudia made a perfect breakfast with equally superbly sourced food (ie Huntsham Court Farm sausages which I now intend to buy if I can) . I am now addicted to their kick-start-the-morning tomato juice, as were others, as the bottle was left empty. Claudia was a delightful host, her cheeriness setting the tone for the day. Highly recommended.

We've eaten here twice in the past month and both times it's been superb. The menu has almost entirely changed between visits too. The chateaubriand is the best I've eaten in many years and also highly recommend the scallop ceviche and gazpacho! The staff are also wonderfully attentive without being pushy. They've a fantastic knowledge of the (huge) wine list, which also features local wines from Wiltshire. The pink fizz is delicious! We will no doubt be back again soon, without a doubt our new favourite place to eat locally!

Excellent pub food/rooms but expensive. Dinner good and rooms very well appointed and attractively sited. Breakfast on the other hand was poor all round- poor choice, poorly served and a big let down. A Premier Inn does better on all counts in my experience so for a quality place was a huge disappointment. Will not stay again despite the good points as in my opinion not worth the money on my experience

Serial diners here as local to home. However we return because the food and service is brilliant. Having been a few times and trusting the kitchen we opt for the tasting menu each time. It changes every few weeks so we return when a new menu is in place. Not having any dislikes or food we don’t like we don’t bother viewing the menu so every course is a surprise. Every meal is memorable in its own way. At the time of writing the 1st course was nettle soup which had been picked around the property. Never would have thought nettles could taste so good. I didn’t try this at home! It’s a bit in the middle of no where so plan transport both ways but do visit if you have the opportunity.

We returned to The Red Lion at the owners invitation on Saturday as he was horrified at our bad visit . It was a completely different experience. The atmosphere was warm and welcoming, the service impeccable and the food well worth a Michelin star. We had the chateaubriand again which melted in the mouth. It would not have mattered what one chose everything was very good. One was spoilt for choice as all the first courses were wonderful and I am sure the desserts were as well but we were too full to enjoy one!

Very disappointed, took friends for a special birthday dinner. Sadly since Guy has moved from the kitchen to just management the standard of food has dropped, certainly not worth a Michelin star. The service was dreadful, we had to call the waiter each time we wanted something, they were more interested in talking to each other. When it was pointed out the chateaubriand was tough the waiter told us ‘ it was the luck of the draw!’ We will not be going back and have told friends not to go there.

This is almost not food but a work of art for your tastebuds. Every mouthful were fireworks of flavours with complimentary textures and just melted away. My husband and I tried ingredient combinations that would never consider and were not left disappointed. We ordered a 3 course dinner for 2 with wine and though pricey we considered it worth the money. We stayed in one of the guest rooms called the Manser morning and breakfast did not disappoint and was to the same standard as the evening meal. Can not wait to return!

I've been lucky enough to eat at a range of Michelin starred restaurants. The biggest compliment I can give to the Red Lion is that it occupies that sweet spot for me, much like Angela Hartnett's Murano. It's food you can associate with and almost imagine producing yourself, albeit it would never taste half as good. I love the lack of pretence. Sadly things didn't go to plan so we didn't get to stay for the second night and tackle the tasting menu. Gutted. The breakfast was pretty special though, especially the bacon!! The owners were pretty decent about us dropping out of the second night so a big thank you from my family for being understanding and also for a great meal.

My husband had the rabbit starter (which I had some of), I opted to miss the starter and have a pudding. As it was a treat we went for the chateaubriand which was out of this world. The portion was so big (it’s for 2) I couldn’t fit in a desert. Will definitely be back.

We booked the Red Lion for our recent trip to Wiltshire, the food was great and the bar/waiting staff were very friendly and attentive. The Chateaubriand was cooked perfectly and the pate starter was incredible, the only issue we have was the appalling language coming from the chef in the kitchen, they need to be aware that there are customers dining close by and they can hear what you are saying, If you are frustrated by something then go out the back and curse not where the customers can hear you!

We were so looking forward to an evening at The Red Lion and it did not disappoint. The staff were very professional yet friendly and the setting was very pleasant with tables well apart. We chose chateaubriand with béarnaise sauce, huge chips, spinach, watercress and salad leaves with the most delicious dressing I’ve ever had. All was superb with homemade sourdough bread and homemade butter beforehand. The steak was very tender, juicy and perfectly cooked. Unfortunately we were too full to do justice to the enticing desserts. All thoroughly enjoyable.

I have very high expectations and am not out to pick but am very honest - however not once have I been disappointed with a single aspect of this hidden gem.The staff are brilliant, fun, always knowledgable and prepared to help, available and make the entire experience significantly more enjoyable and memorable. The food is, without a doubt the best meal I have had in as long as I can remember - and I spent a fair while trying to remember the last meal I was as satisfied by.Each course was just absolutely strategic, down to the portion size meaning I was lucky enough and grateful to enjoy all three. The wine menu has enough variation for someone who knows wine, and value for money - coming from a bit of a “tight arse” it is probably my most valuable spend of the year.Lovely environment, cosy and non pretentious when the food and drink could compete with other Michelin restaurants - is as comfortable as your local pub, great vibe, wonderful place and I do hope the staff are rewarded.Homemade bread is a lovely touch also and the best I’ve had since ItalyThank you,Possibly your biggest fan.

Came here for a celebration and found the food not up to Michelin standard by a mile.As someone who has dined in many Michelin star restaurants I can safely say that although the meal was nice, it was not ‘special’.The cost was far beyond its worth. As someone with years of experience in the hospitality industry I appreciate what good service is. In that respect, the service here is fantastic. The waiter was such a lovely and kind gentleman and we felt that the restaurant adapted as best they could given it was their first weekend opening. My only complaint here is the quality, size and price of the food.A meal for two with no alcohol was £140 and it was not one that we will remember. A shame.I would like to stress that the staff, and the venue were lovely as is the beautiful village. My complaint lies only with the food itself. It was a gastro pub experience, and certainly not a Michelin star!

Mains from wreckfish, chateaubriand, veal and the sand carrots and again all cook to perfection! Came here for Sunday lunch en route to Devon. We began the meal with some tasty homemade sour dough and rye bread, which was complementary and arrived promptly. For starters my husband had Cornish crab tart, which was outstanding. I had the chicken liver pate which was perfectly pleasant but nowhere near in the same league as the tart. We shared Chateaubriand for main course and this was beautifully cooked and full of flavour, literally melting in the mouth. The accompanying vegetables were all very well cooked too. There was a Yorkshire pudding each and these were both a little on the overdone side and not especially memorable. There was a good flavoursome jus but we could have done with a bit more of it ( we would have mentioned this to the waiting staff but no one came over to ask us how we were enjoying it until we had finished - this was also true of the other two courses, not really very Michelin starred service, although all the staff were very young they were all friendly and helpful). For dessert we had a rhubarb and custard tart with negroni sorbet and a chocolate financier with beetroot purée, rosemary icecream and a yogurt bavarois. Both desserts were very prettily presented and tasted good. Overall the meal was definitely above your average pub Sunday lunch, but at £120 for 2 people it needed to be.

My wife and I had dinner here on Saturday night. That was ok, not outstanding and very expensive. On Sunday lunch we had seven for lunch. Same menu as Saturday night. Two out of five main courses were not available including the roast beef which four of our guests would have chosen. Quality of the other courses mixed. One person had the pie which was obviously left over from the night before. This is not what I would have expected from a Michelin star restaurant at a cost to me for food and drinks of £600. The ownners make a play of being good "mine hosts" in all the blurb but we never saw them. I have responded to their survey along the line of this report but in more detail but have had no reaction or response. Do they care?We stayed overnight in the Troutbeck Guesthouse. Nice room overlooking the river Avon. BUT, there is very little sound insulation in the new rooms. Loud plumbing and extractor fan noises for our room and the one next door woke us up frequently. Lovely state of the art Bang & Olusen tv but we could find no way of turning it off at night. Zapper would not do it and no mains switch so ended up having to cover it up with towels and suit bags! I suspect the batteries in the zapper were flat - do they check these things? So for £225 for the night, after initially being pleased we ended up feeling ratty and dissapointed.

Considering that we had travelled a long way, and booked 6 weeks in advance, I felt that we were put in a corner and overlooked for most of the evening. The staff seemed to be either absent or distracted. The starter of grilled scallop (one, total) in umami broth was delicious, the risotto unfortunately was over salted. Our mains of roast pork were very tough and chewy and we would have sent them back to the kitchen had there been any staff in attendance. After waiting 15mins or so of not being able to attract anyone’s attention, I returned to my plate and found the meat slightly less difficult to cut, so I suspect they were not property rested when they came out the oven. And the pannacotta was disappointing - more like a chocolate mousse in a mug buried under a pile of crunchy seeds and cherries. When I paid the bill, I commented that it han been difficult to get the attention of staff - this was met with silence. A simple apology would have been appreciated . As we left we encountered one front of house (standing outside!) who then complained to us about a large party in the private dining room. So unprofessional - we won’t be back. All in all - very disappointing

Haphazard was the best way to describe it, with the low point being the description of the Cafe Gourmand dessert (“Whatever, I dunno”). Tried to have a quiet chat with the front of house as we were leaving, but no one was around to see us off or say goodbye. Having worked in the trade, it’s a shame to see the great dishes let down by the service and front of house, and so only a 4 out of 5.

Our day started at dawn on Friday morning in the Midwest (US). One hop to Detroit and then another to London-Heathrow, for a 6am arrival. Yawn. After a bit of breakfast in the airport lounge, off the rental car dealer.

A Michelin starred gastro pub that serves exquisite food whilst also serving its local village community as a village hostelry. We were there for a gourmet foody weekend and what we experienced came way above our expectations. The room in the nearby (2 mins. walk) guest house was furnished to a very high standard and extremely comfortable. Quiet, because a trout stream meandered past the window. The tasting menu was well designed and absolute perfection. On the second night we chose from the a la carte menu which was inclusive within a certain allowance Breakfast was accompanied by champagne and there was an excellent choice of food. People called in with or without dogs to have a coffee or something more. There were newspapers and magazines on the bar counter and outside a box of potatoes that were surplus to requirements. Very much a village pub with a difference.

Loved this place, just had a started as unfortunately had lunch plans but my god it was difficult not to order more. The food was perfection and the pub is lovely and cosy, warm and busy with good vibe - good Sunday pub with fireplace! The staff were very helpful and chatty, all round lovely place and look forward to going back for a full meal. Good wine menu also.

The Red Lion was a fantastic place for a Saturday night celebration dinner this week. The food is excellent and the wine list very good too. From the home baked sourdough bread, to the beetroot cured salmon starters, to the venison mains to the chocolate and chestnut cake dessert, the chef has done a great job here. The red cabbage side is a revelation! One thing I would say would be that the atmosphere could be improved in the restaurant with much quieter (/no) music and dimmer lighting. But this is a minor point - overall a great restaurant. with seasonal, relevant ingredients and good portions despite the slightly pricey price tags.

Lovely warm room and attentive staff certainly makes this a good place to visit. The food was overall good but not great but well presented. A few extra touches with the food would make this a destination worth deviating for.

Food was generally good and to the level you would expect on the pricing although presentation was a little unappetising. Nice pub style ambience. Menu had few vegetarian options. Disappointed that they were down to their last roast beef at 1pm so only one of 2 guests who wanted this option could have it. Wines were good.

East Chisenbury is a fair distance from Salisbury but definitely worth the trip. We visited early Saturday night for dinner. To be honest it really was the best food that we have eaten for ages. Everything on the menu looked delicious so it was difficult to choose. I had the warm crab tart for starter and my fiancée something called rouget which was small slices of cured red mullet with various bits and pieces which was really beautiful with lots of flavours. The crab tart was also very good. Main course was halibut for me (delicious) and abalone mushroom with pasta for her. We even had dessert, which is unusual for us. My fiancée raved about her affogato ( ice cream with espresso).

Visited recently, wanted a snack and a glass of wine. Two cheese sandwiches and 2 glasses of house wine and two spritzers over £50. Wouldn't have minded paying this but the sandwiches were served on a plate with no garnish of any kind, no crisps, leaves or anything and the sandwiches were ok but not a lot of cheese and a lot of pickle in one and the other was full of onion and little cheese. I travel the countryside a lot with my business and eat out several times a week and was very disappointed.

Went here for my 24th birthday, as I was excited to see a Michelin star place so close by! First impressions were of a really nice pub, and the staff were really friendly when we entered. The choice of drinks at the bar was excellent, and I was particularly happy to see a bottle of Yamazaki, as well as Leffe on tap.

Came here for the first time as a Wedding Anniversary treat and what a treat it was. I decided against a starter as I fill up quickly but couldn't resist eating half my husbands chicken liver pate which was so delicious I wondered if they sold pots of it. I also had a Blueberry mojito which I could have kept drinking until I was under the table! We both had the lamb which melted in our mouths, chips which were the chunkiest and crispiest ever and the beetroot which was fantastic. No one flavour was too overpowering everything worked together beautifully. We then had a delicious creme brulee and chocolate pound cake for dessert. The service was fantastic, the atmosphere was laid back and it was a memorable anniversary and we will be back.

The chicken liver pate and chateaubriand was the best I have ever tasted. Nothing was too much trouble. Food was served piping hot and in timely fashion. The staff (particularly Leo and Jim) were knowledgeable, warm, friendly and easy to gind when needed. It was great to be served by professionals who truly took pride in their work. Most worthy of their Michelin Star held since 2012 I believe!

Probably the best in the south of England, having eaten at almost every pub & restaurant recommended in the Michelin guide over the past 10 years, this place has a relaxed pub atmosphere combined with a Michelin star restaurant, private dining room upstairs and a fabulous garden, it also has rooms in its own guest house just down the road. If your after a pub grub chicken kiev there’s also more of a boozer pub down the road called the Swanny which is well advertised, here though is Michelin star food but in a relaxed and un-pretentious environment, very dog friendly and regularly have tasting menus which are wonderfully paired with the wine suggestions, staff and service is good and owners Britt & Guy are down to earth & hospitable, certainly a place for true foodies.

I always hit a 'Spoons' when working away as they tend to be pretty consistent, it is what it is and doesn't try to punch above it's weight. I found a window seat so I could people watch, and the table was clean and not at all sticky like so many others! Beer festival offers were great. £1.79 for a pint of 6.9% ale! Fantastic and great quality. The katsu curry (with a drink) was tasty, hot and a decent portion, but the onion bhaji's (tiny) and veg samosa were not so great so probably best avoided. Tonight I'll try something else off the menu as its always good value. I might well end up in here every night of the six nights I'm in Trowbridge, especially as most other pubs and restaurants don't all get decent reviews.
