Absolutely avoid. Lacks flavour, seasoning and any taste at all. Sauce is flavourless. Missing items. Rushed order, no love or heart in the food. Clearly not put any effort whatsoever into making it. Seen similar reviews elsewhere and think the place has gone downhill.

Upon arrival to the restaurant I was told that”we don’t sell English food here” I stated I did not want English food hence why I’m at a Chinese restaurant. :) I then asked for the menu and they told me they have no menu written in English. “cash only , no card” I left without saying anything else.

Ordered a special curry but ot was disgusting, the meat was slimey, curry sauce thin and watery. It looked like dog food and tasted bad.

I chose the hotpot, the food and sauce wasn’t fresh at all. The staff was super rude and unhelpful. I spend 70 pounds for my family to get diarrhoea.

Food is amazing and very reasonably priced. I highly recommend the thick soup (bone broth) all you can eat hot pot for £22! (£18 on wed and Thurs). The picture below was the best dish.

Literally such a dull customer service, The order was placed, and then they canceled the delivery. The money was never refunded, calls were never answered. After 17 phone calls finally someone answers it. The response about the order was literally unexpected, " MY CALL WAS SLAMMED" I tried to reach them again, one of the employee picks it up and leaves me hanging on the call, after my wait for 12 minutes, I disconnected the call. For third time someone answers saying they have no idea about the order. I asked them if they could deliver it without the refund, the response was unfortunate. Stunned with response and the way you guys handle the business, I had to put an effort to leave this review..... RED LANTERN get your business etiquettes right...….

Reconsider if you are looking for Chinese food in Leicester. Their food are straight from Chinese supermarket freezers to your dining table. Please do expect some extra chewy frozen meat in your hotpot and DIARRHEA.

Amazing, authentic and delicious, mostly northern Chinese food. Hotpot also available as an option which is fun for groups and makes for a fun, interactive and healthy meal. Hosts and servers are all very welcoming and friendly, will do a lot to be accommodating.

We ordered over £60 worth of food on JustEat, the app said it was free delivery but charged £2.00, and we were like "ok it is a big order" and then phoned up demanding £5 extra to get the order delivered. They cancelled our order when we said we couldn't give them the £5 in cash.

Very nice experience, especially clean toilet. Although the location is a bit hard to find but really accurate on the map. The flavor of hotpot is traditional Northern taste. Good choice if you want have a try with traditional Chinese flavor. Love the lamb barbecue and seasonal vegetables. Price is also reasonable for hotpot. I would come back again very soon. 5 star recommended.

I have eaten in the restaurant and ordered delivery with my girlfriend. The food is full of flavour with many authentic dishes on the menu to choose from. The spicy Tofu with simple boiled rice was a delightful lunch. The only drawback is that it’s difficult to order online as, being vegan, we have occasionally ordered a dish, under the vegetarian section, only to find unlisted meat in it on arrival. It would be so good to have a Chinese restaurant where it was easy to navigate the menu for meat free dishes. We also found the bill a little pricey for what we had but the food is great. I’d happily eat there again and if you’re near the London Road I’d strongly recommend it.

(AVOID) I place an order via Deliveroo. I received the wrong order. When I called the restaurant, a Chinese lady picked up and said she will get someone to give me a call back? Someone called me back after 40 min, he simply said contact Deliveroo and ask for a refund. He did not offer to re-deliver the food or anything. My night ruined, finally managed to get through to Deliveroo and got my refund. AVOID this his takeaway! They don’t care about the customer and will get your order wrong!

Overpriced, though I like spicy food, the takeaway chicken dish was hotter than an Indian Vindaloo ! I was disappointed that the chicken was boned. The menu looked good but too expensive, I was restricted in choice as they don,t accept cards. Their sitting clientele appear to be young Chinese, possibly students. If so they must be very wealthy students. I won,t return.

So I’ll be honest I’ve only ever had one other hot pot. This one had so much flavour. Service was very fast and it was a lot of fun. I didn’t like getting weird looks when I walked in, I thought that was a bit backwards. I’m always one for trying authentic and new things. This ticked those boxes. It helped that our friend who took us was Chinese Malaysian as he could read the menu, this really dropped it though as had we not gone we would not have been able to order properly. The cost of the hot pot was really quite expensive but you get unlimited refills and I left having eaten my body weight in food. I would recommend going but go with someone who can read the menu.

Several instances where food has been 45+ minutes late, lukewarm and generally poor quality. Hoped it would just be a one-off but several poor experiences means that I will not be ordering from here again.

A fun way to eat Chinese food, cook it yourself at the table. interesting food, very different to normal Chinese, but they also have a normal standard Chinese menu. Beware the fondue menu is in Chinese but they will translate it for you.

Ordered a takeaway which was very disappointing. The crab dish with ginger and spring onions consisted of inedible crab legs and little else, the veg chow mein was broccoli and noodles. Flavourless and very expensive. Wont be going back.

Psycho owner Ordered food at 5pm today and arrived 1 hour and 40 minutes later, i called twice in during the wait, and when the owner finally arrived he called my phone and basically yelled and screamed at me! (I'm Chinese, and yet I've never met someone so psycho in my life before!) I was too scared to go down so my boyfriend went instead, and he wasn't very happy about the owner's attitude towards me (The owner's voice was loud enough for my boyfriend to hear lollll! THIS LOUD), and there was an argument, at last the owner smashed the food on the floor, after he followed my boyfriend into his apartment complex ----- im pretty sure without an invitation this is illegal trespassing into private property. Take care, to all future Chinese customers. # update, still waiting for the surveillance footage from the management

can't complain about the quality of the food served at the Red Lanter, but it is the most expensive Chinese restaurant I have been to in the uk. 4 stars because despite the restaurant not being busy, our food came about 15 minutes apart between 1st and last served.... It was a nice meal but I will not be going again, far cheaper places.

This place has been recommended to me several times by people around here that enjoy good food. The restaurant itself is tucked away in a row of old shops, which are slowly being turned into restaurants themselves. I think this area, around highfield st is going to be very popular in the future. The restaurant itself is quite small and basic in furnishing, but lovely and clean and homely. As all the other reviewers have said we were the only ones in there not Chinese. The atmosphere was very friendly and we were made very welcome. The owner took our orders and was very friendly and smiley, even though we did have a couple of language issues it was all very calm and easily overcome. The food when it arrived was presented in beautiful and large dishes steaming fresh from the kitchen and it was delicious. We ordered King prawn in chilli and salt, then crispy beef, aubergine and pork, (which was the best I have ever tasted), then we had king prawn with ginger. There were four of us and one dish each was easily enough to fill you and allow sharing, all this a bottle of wine and four bottles of Chinese beer and the bill was only £71.00. There was no rush and the whole experience was lovely. Only problem now is to stop myself going there every time we go out. Loved it and I'm sure you will too.

I have eaten here a good few times and have been impressed each time. As a westerner with a Chinese ex wife I have a broad understanding of eastern cuisine. The dishes are wide ranging and the translation of the menu is accurate, unlike a certain restaurant on London Road which is incomprehensible, hilarious, and if you present yourself as other than Chinese you won't even get to see unless you ask, talk about lost in translation. The Red Lantern on the other had will go to great lengths to make you feel at home, just throw yourself on their mercy and go with the flow. The facilities are basic but homely, expect to be surrounded by Chinese people, mostly students and enjoy the ambience, I certainly do.

Very good, reasonably priced Chinese food in a pleasant and clean sit down place. One star off for cubing the chicken in my dish (simmered chicken with bean sauce) with the bones in. Otherwise excellent, service was good, fellow diners all seemed to be Chinese which is often a good sign. However menu was all translated into English, so no problem there. Relaxed atmosphere and good amount of seating, probably good for groups.

Really disappointed with our meal as it seemed to have good reviews however the food was bland, there just wasn’t any flavour. No egg in the egg fried rice, the curry was just a thick tasteless gloop and again no flavours at all in the chow mein. Take -out for 2 £39.00!! Get a new chef.
