Red Diner in Newcastle upon Tyne

We were looking for somewhere to eat on a Saturday evening as a family and left it slightly late. We managed to book a table at this diner and were not disappointed. The place is small and does what it says on the tin in that it is a diner as opposed to a fancy Chinese restaurant. The waitress was very friendly and after studying the menu we decided to go for the banquet (A on the menu). The food arrived soon after the order was placed, and every dish was tasty. The place was quiet, which suited us as it allowed us to have some good catch-up chat. Would recommend this place if you are looking for some decent Chinese food at a reasonable price.

We were able to get a walk in at 6.15 on a Friday night after the restaurant we intended to visit was closed. We‘d not eaten here previously. We had some salt and pepper ribs to start, beef finger and spring onion and twice cooked stir fried szechuan belly pork with egg fried rice for our main. And a glass of wine and a beer. The bill came to £48. I have to say it was faultless. The service was polite and efficient, and the food quality was excellent. We will most certainly be back next time we are in Newcastle for a pre-theatre/pre-gig meal.

We ordered quarter duck for a starter, when it arrived there was no meat, just scraps of hard over cooked duck, the pancakes were hard and seemed old. We didn’t let this deter us and hoped the main would be better. We ordered salt and pepper chicken, rice, chips, noodles and curry sauce. A very basic order. The chicken was stringy and synthetic and didn’t have the texture or the taste of real chicken at all and looked like it had come from a frozen Iceland bag. The curry was lumpy and the chips were undercooked. It was overall disgusting. We complained and the manager didn’t charge us for our mains which was fair however it still doesn’t change the bad food and experience we had. We were the only people eating in this restaurant so they had no excuse for the food to be so terrible, I think maybe it was a sign that we should have taken in to consideration before wasting our time here.

Tonight was our first night eating out in New Castle. We wanted to try Chinese food. Im Chinatown, we stopped a random stranger and be said this place was his favorite. We ordered many dishes, and they were all tasty, but what I enjoyed more, as an American on vacation, was the authentic unforced kindness of the workers at the restaurant. They went above and beyond making myself, my 2 year old daughter (who was all over the place), and 2 other guests with us, feel welcomed. I even askes for Beef and Broccoli, which was not on their menu, and they made it for me. If you are looking for a great experience, please do yourself a favor and head over to Red Diner and enjoy a night out. P. S. Bring cash to leave a tip. I regret that we did not take cash with us, just 5💷. I hope this review helps make up for it

Had a nice dinner and karaoke with friends. I recommend the dry pork noodles

The food was really bad. We ordered kung pao chicken and they gave a sweet and sour chicken soaked in a sweet source.. wasn’t edible…when we asked they said they have a different chef today. So basically they gave us whatever the food they wanted not what we really ordered. Dissapointed!

Clean tidy restaurant, very tasty food, piping hot when served to table, nice place.

Food is excellent and Staff gave great recommendations. 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼 We had Mapo Taufo, Fish with Abergjne and Salad Pork Ribs. ⭐️ ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ But there is some Hong Kong customer speaking so LOUD as if they are giving a lecture. 😅😅😅 Really spoilt the ambience. The Super Noisy Group is in the photo. Perhaps having some ambience music would be good.

Absolutely superb authentic Sichuan cuisine, the best we've had in the UK! Good value for money given the quality of food, friendly staff and overall a great experience, highly recommend!

Friendly staff. The Chinese menu has differential dishes than the English menu. Compared to other restaurants nearby, this is probably the best we've had so far. Reasonably priced seafood. Must try the Chinese menu. Don't be so boring, fried rice or chow mein don't do Chinese food justice. The lamb stew was wow. The golden deep fried squid was excellent. Highly recommend.

me and my friends had such an amazing time at red diner tonight! we hired a karaoke room for 2 hours and had the loveliest warm welcome. the owners were so lovely and showed us exactly what to do, and were always on hand to help out. brilliant atmosphere and we had so much fun. would 100% recommend x

The Worst Service we had experienced after traveling more then 40 countries!!! Sorry for not wearing Formal Attire, but not look down on someone who you called Customers!!! Next door who is having Smiley Faces is highly recommended with 5 STARS! Sxx Chinese Cuisine!

Perhaps the worse Chinese food I ever had in my life. We tried different things and all of them were bad but the sliced pork in Sichuan chili was particularly awful (the meat quality was bottom tier). Even the service was disappointing, they would not bring us tap water and said, jokingly, ‘we don’t make money from tap water’. I would not recommend this place to anyone.

Incredible food with top notch service, couldn't ask for a better restaurant

This is a tough one. The restaurant was filled with Asians and it seemed like there was several different dialects of Chinese being spoken which made me very excited to try it out. It's so difficult to find un-Americanized Chinese food. Unfortunately the dishes I received bore no resemblance to what I ordered. My starter was delivered as nothing more than wonton dumplings in a light broth. I thought I ordered dumplings in a chili oil soup. My main was fried beef with golden mushrooms. And what I received seemed to be pork in thin rice noodles with no mushrooms. The flavors were every bit as exciting as something you would get from a China Panda. Utter disappointed and frankly insulting. And in the world we live in now, completely unacceptable. I guess it's back to green pepper steak. Such a shame! At least the Tsing Tao was cold. Wave off of this place.

Disappointed. Should have known as only ones in tea time Sunday. Food below average. Beef so chewy like chewing fat! Rice tasted like it had been reheated Never tasted sweet and sour chicken so poor. Staff little engagement. I've nothing positive to say. Advice would be in this area area look for restaurants with people in for a start.

If you are white and you want karaoke AVOID THIS PLACE.

Booked a table for four people on a Friday night, the menu is in English and Chinese and there is a good selection of both plus a choice of Two set banquets for 2, 4 and 6 people. The English menus are traditional English style Chinese food which is very very good and becoming harder to find in other existing and new and up coming Chinese restaurants in Newcastle, don't miss out try it and enjoy.

We dined here most recently in a large group with friends' families.... They took excellent care of us. I was the only white guy not speaking Mandarin (it's okay, I bred my kids specifically as translators... lol). We all had a lot of fun, grown-ups & children alike. Thank you for the "exxxtra spicy hot; not white-ppl hot.. for real" dishes as requested. Spot on.. not just that numb, "mala-hot"... but real flavourful... time spent to roast/burn/split peppers and chilies.... thanks you! :) I just got mouth water typing that about the spicy!

Lobster noodle is so nice. Even the green onion used is selected. Highly recommend.

Called in with my wife Christine whilst having an over night stay at the nearby Premier Inn. We ordered the sharing platter, chicken and sweetcorn soup, ribs were both delicious. Our mains were a spicy lamb with leeks , peppers and other main of beef. Food was delicious and staff pleasant and polite . We both had a bottle of Tiger beer and no complaints when bill arrived of £52. will return.

Perfectly good. On a busy night we were served quickly & the food arrived quickly. I would describe the food as standard Chinese fare like I have many times. Friendly service from 2 waiting staff. No complaints.

Was here for a friend's birthday. We'd booked a karaoke Booth which was fun. I ordered satay and rice. When it arrived it was literally a plate of onions, green peppers and pineapple (never had that in satay before!). There was barely any satay sauce and the taste reflected that. I drowned my plate in soy sauce just to give it some kind of taste but I ate the rice and left most of the rest and spent the rest of the night hungry. Karaoke choice wasn't great and seemed quite complicated. And when we came to sing the songs we'd chosen, a lot of the lyrics were wrong. The mics also kept feeding back all through the night, even tho we weren't pointing them at the speakers. Nice staff and quick service but I definitely wouldn't go back.

I booked this place at short notice for a party of 16 on a Stag Weekend. One single karaoke lounge which comfortably seated us around tables with a great view of the screen. We were in less than 2 minutes before the tunes were belted out! We had a steady flow of drinks and all really enjoyed their food. We initially booked for 2 hours but took an extra as we were having so much fun. Very surprised with the bill as well - great value for money. Constructive criticism - update Facebook site, website and have an answerphone. I found it really tough to get through to make a reservation. Would highly recommend and would love to visit again.

I hate to write a bad review but this place only deserves that. The restaurant was cold with nothing on the tables but table cloths. No other diners were there, which should have given us a clue!. The service was fine but the quality of the food was poor and the choice one the set menu disappointing. The chicken dish had a rubbery consistency and th prawns tasted as if they had been cleaned in bleach! The whole meal was a huge disappointment and wasn't cheap either! Next time try King Neptune a few doors down, its much better

Just left this place. Feel sorry for staff. Ten Scotts arrived well drunk 5.45 pm Chanting shouting Unfortunately we had already ordered food. After soup we realised that the atmosphere deteriorated and we were forced to leave So bill 50 quid plus : for 2 bowls of soup Disappointedly the staff continued to plead for 5 more minutes 5more minutes We paid 20 plus I insisted we needed to go… delay delay Noise from the table escalated Then a plastic bag appears You owe us 30 pounds more We paid We left Keep your bag Torture

Nice tasty food however the rice was a bit stodgy. Apart from that lovely and friendly staff.

The food was okay and that’s what I gave my star for. Service is atrocious, they refuse to give us tap water and said they just don’t provide tap water for customers. What kind of restaurant doesn’t provide water to customers?? Very unhappy with the service.

Came to the restaurant with family and friends, the managers were not polite AT ALL and had a very bad attitude toward customers, floor staff didnt seem like they wanted to be there either. Will never go back to this place again! I dont think they know the meaning of HOSPITALITY.

Altogether delicious! Yummy appetiser platter! Chicken with black bean sauce and sweet and sour shrimp were perfectly made. Friendly service on a Saturday nite.

Me and a group of friends were here at the weekend for karaoke and it was brilliant! The music system took a little getting used to but the service was great and we had so much fun! Would highly recommend for a group/work night out.

The staff are very abrupt and me and my fiance felt very unwelcome. We had soup for starters which was ok but then we waited ages for our main courses. I had crispy chilli chicken and my fiance had pork with crispy noodles. When the pork dish finally arrived we got a horrible smell of off fish at the same time, my fiance put a piece of meat in his mouth and then spat it out. The pork wasn't just raw it was also off. When the waiter came with my dish we told him the pork was off and raw. He just picked up the plate and said "you want something else", my fiance said no as he now felt sick and the waiter just walked off without any word of apology. Obviously we didn't pay for the pork dish and certainly didn't leave a tip. After we left the restaurant we went to a burger van so my fiance could get something to eat and we were told that the restaurant only scored 1 on the Government Hygiene Certificate and that they had a bad problem with rats. AVOID THIS RESTAURANT UNLESS YOU WANT FOOD POISONING.

Food barely made the mark for UK Chinese food standards, all the flavours were there as it should. Although I'd avoid the duck meat, as it was dry and the flavourless. The rice that was served could also have been better, as there was charred bits, and overall dry, and not what I'd expect of steamed white rice. Perhaps the restaurant next door might fare better as it was crowded compared to this, which was empty on a Sunday dinner. Yet the food still took forever to come.

Cannot fault our experience. Picked it at random from a brief walk through the options in Chinatown. There was nobody else in, (and nobody else when we walked past later), but the food was excellent and smashing value. Especially the crispy duck, and salt and pepper ribs.

I've been coming here on and off for the last 10yrs now. The food is consistently really good and good value for money. Staff are always intentive. The place also has karaoke rooms which are a blast! A MUST to visit!!!

Terrible service! We waited for at least half an hour for the starter!! And even longer for the main dish! We ordered beef udon noodles and sweet and sour king prawn. We didn't finish the meal and asked for takeout (it was half of noodles and 3 sweet and sour king prawns left). The staff gave us 1 dish box but the sauce of two dishes was totally different and we didn't want to mix it up. So we asked for another dish box. The staff said it's a waste and she was shaking her head. We couldn't believe how their attitude was so bad!!

This is the worst Chinese restaurant in Newcastle I have been to. The kitchen probably gets its salt for free and puts loads in every dish. This masks all other flavours - the aim is likely to get you to buy lots of drinks.

The big seafood claypot was nice and the seaweed roll was crispy as well, except the mushrooms were slightly sour in the soup and the Szechuan fish £18 was pretty bad in terms of texture and seasoning. Not sure if I'd go back if I travel here again. Maybe other dishes might be better.

Staff are quite rude, we asked for a container to take food away and they tried to insist we put it all in one foil container because it is a waste to use two.

Been to Newcastle for 3 nights, found this diner by accident but now I can say I was super lucky. Had dinner there all 3 nights. Absolutely fantastic. The best chinese food I’ve ever had anywhere in the UK so far. Authentic atmosphere great service and top quality food. Portions were huge and the price was more than acceptable. Can only recommend! Loved it.

The food was not the best, it was not like the meat I am used to. The place was freezing. The staff were friendly but not very professional.

Staying in Newcastle for one night this week and walked into China Town. Just picked this place at random. First signs were good. Food ok but service was a little abrupt. Other tables full of Chinese people which I took as a good sign. Everyone had prawn crackers bar me ? I was automatically given a knife and fork which was presumptive. Rice came and sat there but no bowl or other main course for some time. I was on my Own so always order too much and take home the rest. Other tables “doggy bags” were prepared In the kitchen and brought out. Mine was unceremoniously dumped in Trays at my table ....... i didn’t like this attention. I Just felt like I wasn’t welcome which is a shame as I have to bring 10 business clients out next week I’ll go elsewhere instead

They always have a great taste of food + good service + clean place. My 6yrs old boy always wanted eat there and He always eat "soft fish ginger spring onion", the surprise is... He eat 5 bowl of rice with that menu.

Went here just to get ostensibly proper Chinese food. Don’t know if I was too early, but zero ambience, most noise was two of the staff chatting animatedly 🤔, ordered three roast dish with rice, the pak choi was good ✅ rice was stodgy.. crackers stale.. meats all fat and bone, they tell you it’s on the bone, yes no problem, but some meat would be good. The beer, bottled Chinese beer, was the best thing about the whole meal. Toilets, which resembled a jumble store smelled horrendous... bleach and toilet cubes are not expensive for goodness sake! Perhaps critical, but the whole place seemed dingy, would not recommend.

Very yummy it reminded me the taste of my home country Chinese.. Now in future if am craving for Chinese taste no doubt I'll be in Red Diner . Do visit guys .. Enough quantity server .. 🤙✨

Fantastic meal. Went as a works party and had a set meal which was great value especially for the amount and quality of the food. Good service, helpful and accomadating. Definitely recommend.

Awful experience! Karoke has barely any current songs and can only search by artist, ordered a food deal where it was a banquet for 10 people, kept informing staff one of the party was a vegetarian, he was given a vegetarian soup but for main he was given a bowl of broccoli!! When he was paying over £20 just for the food I find this absolutely ridiculous! Also refused to let us pay for our drinks as we ordered them so we all had to keep track of what drinks we ordered on our phones, then when we came to pay they had tried to sneak extra drinks onto our bill (an extra cocktail jug and extra beers) would not recommend and was not enough food for the 10 people even with one person only eating the broccoli. If you want a karoke booth go to cosy Joe's instead where they have all the songs

Had a lovely meal here tonight. The lamb and leek was nice and spicy, my nephew enjoyed his meal and my husband liked his fish and tofu. Good service, not too intrusive. Was very quiet when we first went in but got busier. Will go back again.

The food was good (hence the 3 stars) however the rest was so so unfortunately. Service was rather unfriendly - like they want you to go away (and never come back?). And the experience was ruined by things like dirty restroom that has two dinning chairs in the middle of it! I think HS inspector would be delighted to see that!!

The food was gorgeous. I had shredded chicken with crispy noodles and it was amazing. It's big portions, but once you start eating them you can't stop. The staff our lovely aswell. I will definitely be coming back.

On a solo visit to Newcastle I decided to try the lunch time menu at the Red Diner based upon recommendations. The restaurant was well decorated indoors, being fairly quiet at lunchtime. Service was fast and efficient. I went for the 2 course menu priced at £8 which was certainly value for money. For starters I went for the hot and sour soup followed by sweet and sour chicken with fried rice all with complimentary prawn crackers. Chinese tea was available for an extra £1. The soup was extremely tasty and of good portion size. The main was also very good taste wise although the portions were somewhat on the small size. The only negatives I can say is that the men's toilets were somewhat smelly on the day and that I was told when coming to pay the bill that debit cards cannot be used for less than £10. As I had limited cash on me at the time I had to tell them to make the bill payable for £10 which I thought could have been handled better by the restaurant and made more obvious in advance. Those 2 issues aside the food was excellent and certainly excellent value for money

Ended up here as this with only one other chinese in chinatown was open after 11.30pm. Food was nice, friendly staff reasonably priced.

Attended Friday 7/6/19 and have to say the food was of a poor quality rice had to send back as was soggy, Swert and sour Chicken was crunch with no vegetables and unediable acceptably was deducted of the bill after making a statement that I wasn't willing to pay. Only reason given a 2 star. The salt and pepper chips were a plate of chips on a couple of peppers with minimal salt not my take on salt and pepper chips. 1st visit and certainly my last

Estábamos en Newcastle de vacaciones, y una noche fuimos a China Town para comer comida china. Nos encontramos en el Red Diner. El servicio era excelente, oportuna y amable. Me dieron las gambas con sal y pimienta. Lo mejor que he probado, los langostinos eran totalmente frescos. Mi marido consiguió un plato como la carne de Mongolia, pero con un bistec de flanco que dijo que era excelente. Estuvimos en el Reino Unido por 2 semanas, y esta fue una de las 3 mejores comidas en el viaje. ¡Tan bueno!

Great room for karaoke but food orders were delayed and wrong for our group

I would say this is the best cantonese restaurant I have ever been. The best food ever and excellent service from the staff. The staff is really friendly and willing to take time to recommend food for us. And we did have a good talk and a good time here. Anything more, simply the best.

We visited on a Saturday night and has a really good time at Red Diner. We went as a small group and basically ordered a greatest hits of Chinese dishes to share and all where cooked well and full of flavour. Prawn Toast and dumplings in Chilli sauce really good and highly recommended. Really enjoyed and would probably say for food quality it would be one of the top Chinese restaurants in Newcastle.

Mi familia y yo visitamos este restaurante anoche y tuvimos el menú fijo para cuatro personas, lo cambiamos para adaptarlo a nuestras preferencias y fueron muy flexibles con esto. La comida era increíble cada plato que nos dieron era 5 * y el personal aquí es muy amable. Sin duda recomendaría este lugar a cualquiera que quiera un chino en Newcastle. ¡Estaremos de vuelta!

Unfortunately an average dining experience. I opted for the lunch special, but there wasn't anything special about it. The portions are tiny to start, the crispy wantons had filling missing from two out of the three received. And the chow mein could have had more flavour. Although the service was first rate quick and friendly.

My wife and I went to Newcastle for a day-after-Valentin's meal and chose the Red Diner because it had Crispy Duck as a starter, one of my favorites.It was quite early on Friday and fairly empty. The service was efficient and our waiter very friendly ... we had a chat about education (as I worked in a university). We ordered the crispy duck to be followed by two dishes and rice to share.The food was excellent. Our two dishes (one pork and one beef) were quite large (too large for us to finish). We very much enjoyed the food and were really impressed by its taste and presentation.The final bill was a bit of a shock ... it was surprisingly low. It was £37 for the crispy duck, two excellent large min courses, rice, and two beers. We would certainly be happy to return to the Red Diner.
