After a lovely few hrs at Edinburgh Castle lunch was needed. We were delighted by the range of food on offer. Two signs showed Hot Food and Deli at a long counter so I stood beside 2 other people in the hot food area serving pizza slices. One girl was on the deli attending a long queue. After 10 minutes the lady in front caught the girls eye and asked could she be served for hot food. The girl said we would have to queue up in the deli queue which by then was about 15 people long in order to purchase a pizza slice. To have 1 staff member to handle both areas doesn't work. Once I got my 2 slices if pizza I then had to queue again in a different area in order to pay for it, another 15 people in front of me. After paying if you wanted tea you had to again queue in another area to get this with again 1 person serving a long queue. Tables weren't cleared and eventually when they were its inky ckeated and jit cleaned. All staff very young and miserable looking as they struggled to cope. The system doesn't work at all and £8.50 for a slice of pizza is a tad expensive. If management changed how things are ran it would run a lot smoother.

Over priced, mostly bland food. More chemicals in the sandwiches than a bottle of cleaning fluid - just look at the ingredients must be over 100 preservatives. Most of the food is just tasteless. Pizza is fine and cakes are nice but sandwiches just awful with no seasoning. Been with my family a few times to the castle and this cafe has served the same soup since the first time... disorganised with tourists wandering around lost on where to queue.

Overpriced food, just like at Stirling Castle (even with Historic Scotland Discount) and we were Overcharged for our wine. Overcharge for Wine On the shelf, the price for all the Cans of Wine were £7.00 each, our receipt said £15.00 for 2 wines. The Till person did not scan a bar-code, but used some touch screen I could not see, but the receipt said 2 white wines (one was actually Red, though same price). Noticed too late, hopefully profit goes to HS. By Law, if you change your till price, you have to update the price at display point, especially alcohol. Not Impressed, or was I conned deliberately, hopefull not. Overpriced Everything £ 6.50 for a Ham & Cheese Baguette £ 8.00+ for some of the Baguettes displayed at Hat counter, £ 11.00+ for an Open Sandwich. They are taking the Michael. £ 28.00 bill for 4 items, 2 Ham & Cheese Baguettes & 2 cans of Wine (187ml). If visiting the Castle, eat before or after, plenty of more reasonably priced places at top of Royal Mile.

We visited the castle and wanted to stay longer to see the exhibits but we were getting hungry, so we stopped in to the cafe for a quick bite without any expectations. Our meals were really good! Between the 3 of us we had the Chickpea curry, rice and vegetables, and a slice of pizza. The staff was also very friendly and helpful when my daughter had questions about the dairy content in the dishes. I recommend the cafe if you’re visiting the castle.

Had some lunch here on a recent visit to the castle. Wasn’t an overly busy mid week afternoon and plenty staff, service was ok, it was quite slow and not ideal when standing waiting with hot food, which wasn’t hot by the time we got to the table. Food was nice, chicken & mushroom pie was tasty, the veg and potatoes were also good. Found it quite overpriced for what you get but to be expected in Edinburgh and at visitor attractions.

This place lets the castle down very badly indeed. Had coffee and cake mid-morning and that was ok. Made the mistake of returning for lunch and it was dreadful. I know we’re all trying to save on energy costs but, really, there’s no excuse for serving meals which are little better than tepid.

We stopped here purely because we were visiting the castle and had reached the point where we wanted to stop for a drink and something to eat. Had we have visited later in the day, I doubt we would have bothered. The first thing we noticed on entering was how disorganised the queuing system was. Two tills were open - one for card payments and one for cash - but rather than operating two queues, everyone stood in the same one. As a result, the card payment server kept calling people forward, giving the impression that people were queue jumping. Ordering the food and drink was easy, but collecting it - not so much. Again, the whole thing was completely disorganised. The staff were rushed off their feet, there only appeared to be one person operating the coffee machine, and I saw at least two people wander off with the wrong order. Trying to find a seat was nigh-on impossible and it wasn't even lunchtime at this point! My husband went in search of a table whilst I waited for the drinks and cakes we'd ordered. He eventually found a free table, but we felt obliged to finish as quickly as we could, as other people were still looking for somewhere to sit. In terms of quality and price, the items we had were nice enough but nothing out of the ordinary, and expensive for what they were (cappuccino, hot chocolate and two slices of ginger loaf). The café clearly has a captive audience given its location inside the castle walls, but that doesn't mean they should be complacent. Better organisation at the tills and pick up area wouldn't go amiss, and a few more tables - or even standing areas with tall tables - wouldn't hurt either.

I almost never leave reviews, but I felt I had to because I felt so ripped off here. I'm a local and had time to kill before work so I popped in for lunch. The staff were friendly and the service was quick, but I got the smallest piece of avocado toast I've ever seen for a tenner. I'm still hungry. I sort of knew it would be a mistake to go somewhere touristy but now I know I definitely won't be back. There are nicer places on Cockburn Street, never mind the rest of the Old Town.

We ate here before the Lion King with the VIP Ambassador Lounge deal and it was all very good . I had read some of the negative reviews and was a bit wary after booking but it was a really nice experience. The food was fine , we had chicken skewers and soup and burgers and there was no complaints , but the service was excellent . The girls who served us were efficient and very friendly. They took us up to the lounge and again we had friendly service . All made for a great night , well done
