Red Box Marchmont in Edinburgh, City of

Lovely family breakfast. Good service, friendly staff and excellent food. The vegan pancakes were delicious. Everyone enjoyed their food. We went back later for lunch take-away. Am sure we will be back.

Wish I could give an opinion on the food & drink here but after order a coffee and 15 mini later it didn’t arrive I just asked for a refund. Should have realised by how long it even took for the person at the counter to even acknowledge I was there. Disappointed, won’t be back.

I visited with a friend yesterday, 25th September, between 1.30 and 3 pm. I gave our order at the counter and the young man at the till was being assisted/taught by a young woman - no name but she was wearing a long-ish, light grey sweater, hair tied back; and she spoke with an accent. She said that this was the young man’s first day. I said I understood; she then took it upon herself to make further comment, concluding by saying that my body language was not showing understanding. I am unsure of her actual words as I was completely astonished, indeed dumbfounded, by her response and her attitude. Conclusion - you’ve lost this customer!

Went for a coffee yesterday and had the loveliest experience. Beth, one of the baristas was so kind and welcoming even though they were very busy and made me one of the best lattes I’ve had in a while! Great little spot to stop through in Marchmont.

Now living part of the time in Edinburgh we have taken to visiting Red Box regularly. It is a good spot for breakfast, with a lot of options, plus excellent coffee. The service is friendly and efficient, and the cooking is of a high standard - as a bonus, unlike Birchwood round the corner, which we used to frequent, they can cook eggs any way you like. This afternoon I was very much enjoying my scrambled eggs and smoked salmon, and, despite the cafe being very busy, managing a conversation with my wife and brother (who is partially deaf). There was a lot of noise, and I was aware of the persistent girning of a child several table away, but it was fine. Family friendly cafes are like that. But then, that child, or one of the others at the same table, began screaming. And screaming. Did one of the adults, concerned that this was a painful imposition on other paying customers, go outside to deal with the distressed child? Not at all. Why should they? Did one of the staff suggest that perhaps - just perhaps - this would be the considerate thing to do? No. Why should they? Better to pretend nothing was happening - which they did, quite convincingly. In the end we abandoned what was left of our breakfast and coffee and hit the mean streets of Marchmont, rather cheesed off. Red Box was better than ok, but we'll give it a miss in future. 'Child friendly' is not a licence to be a selfish nuisance.

Very friendly and efficient staff. Restaurant has a really comfy and convivial feeling. Ver much enjoyed some delicious bacon rolls and paninis - would highly recommend

Our second visit in two days. A convenient and recommended cafe. Generous breakfasts, tasty and well cooked. Busy on a Sunday morning we arrived whilst it was still quiet and placed our order. It being Sunday and with no need to rush we initially didn’t notice that 40 minutes had elapsed since we’d got our coffee. Went to the counter and spoke to our waitress who’d taken our order. “Hope you haven’t forgotten us’ I said giving her our table number, she turned and gestured to the cafe ‘As you can see we’re very busy’, ‘Yes and we were here before most of these others’. The order then arrived first, one part and then the next two certainly not more than 5 minutes after we’d spoken. A reasonably decent response in the circumstances. So why 2 stars only: well that was for the unmistakable hand gesture the waitress thought we hadn’t seen when she left our table.

The building is very nice on the inside and outside. It is in a lovely location in Marchmont and is a great place to stop during a cycle. The coffee is fab and the staff seem nice.

I could comment on the surly customer service ,the average coffee but perhaps most telling was the way the chef left the customer toilet. Many years since our last visit ,this was a place on the slide.

Used to like this place, but after the refurbishment service became very slow, and staff (who seemed to be different?) seem grumpy and annoyed. There is also a smell of fried food without adequate ventilation which is very unpleasant.

This is a consistently good cafe with a wide variety of home-baklng and a very good buzz about it. The servers are really friendly and the prices reasonable - (e.g. a 3 egg scrambled eggs on sourdough toast for under £6).

Over priced, slow (and rude) service and wrong food given. Don’t waste your time and money. There are much better options for food in the same area.

I really want to like this place, but everything on the menu needs to be at least £1 cheaper. I think they're banking on the location (central Marchmont) to get away with slightly inflated prices.

This is a good little cafe in busy Marchmont. I felt safe as the place is well kitted out with covid precautions especially lots of hand gel. Nice coffee and good cakes too. You can sit inside or outside. The coffee cup was biodegradable so thumbs up for that.

Nice place but come on £4.25 for a black pudding roll . I would have expected a coffee in with that price ...

great for breakfast, brunch, lunch, afternoon tea........and for meeting other people of all ages and walks of life. Staff are incredibly friendly, with the place having a community feel . Relaxed and you can spend as long as you like without being pressurised to move on as soon as you finish your cuppa or put down your knife and fork.. Should also add they serve the best scones in town. Honestly!

I live very nearby and love coming here just for coffee of even for breakfast. Staff are lovely and the food and coffee is excellent.

Caminamos por este lugar un par de veces de camino al centro. En nuestro camino de regreso decidimos tomar un descanso y entramos. Es un gran lugar con un ambiente agradable y precios razonables. Me gusta la decoración del lugar también.

Red Box es muy relajado, amigable y alegre. Teníamos papas horneadas que estaban sabrosas con una ensalada bien vestida (en lugar de la lechuga floja sin aderezo habitual). El café era bueno y el servicio es muy amable. Muy buena relación calidad-precio también. Tengo que estar de acuerdo en que son bastante lentos en la eliminación de tablas, pero puedo perdonar esto teniendo en cuenta todas las ventajas.

No me gusta dejar malas críticas, pero tuve que señalar esto, tomarlo como comentarios constructivos. Visité con un amigo que pedimos un café, una coca cola y un pastel. Mi café tardó unos minutos en llegar, pero estaba bueno, el pastel estaba delicioso. Mi problema es la falta de limpieza / limpieza de las mesas. Nos sentamos en una mesa sucia, el personal pasaba por nuestra mesa varias veces uno de ellos para entregar mi café, pero ninguno tomaba cubiertos sucios, tazas, tazas, teteras, etc., las mesas de al lado estaban exactamente en la misma condición , triste triste triste. Mala gestión, falta de capacitación del personal y sentido común, quizás todos ellos.

I wish I could have given this place 5 stars as my friends meals of granola and barmcake of bacon and haggis were good. But my veggie haggis on a white barmcake was tasteless and served with nothing to give it any flavour. The coffee was good and the restaurant is bustling with locals.

Wholesome granola and porridge breakfasts with excellent coffee in quirky local cafe. Seemed very child friendly.

First visit today after a bike ride with Edinburgh RC. Really great atmosphere about the place on a Saturday morning. Coffee was really nice as was the cake.

The scones here are to die for. The staff are lovely. The coffee is excellent. The granola and fruit is far too good. Do go, I am lucky enough to live nearby. I love this cafe!

Popped in for coffee for a meeting locally. busy place, obviously popular with students and the atmosphere this gives the place is great. Busy, but able to get a table, and the coffee and scone (ordered at the counter) were promptly delivered, and well presented. Coffee tasted great, but the real winner was the fruit scone. This just tasted amazing, light and fluffy with juice blueberries in it, slighltly crisp on the bottom where it had been baked. In fact it was so good I bought 2 more to take away. I will definately make a point of returning here next time i'm in the area. Possibly even for lunch, the eggs benidict that one of the other customers was having looked awesome.

Been here a few times since a relative moved to the area. It’s very relaxed and pleasant to sit in but the service is incredibly slow and has been each of our half dozen or so visits over the last year. Breakfast today was by far the worst where sadly one of our party received their breakfast about 20 minutes (at least) after the rest of us had finished our own cooked dishes. To make mattters worse plenty of other customers received their food much sooner despite ordering later and bearing in mind it was only bacon, egg and toast there’s not really any excuse for this. A few empty promises of ‘it’s on its way’ didn’t really help.

Thanks today for being so lovely! Had a really nice cappuccino (and I've drunk alot of coffee round these parts) and was given a scone on the way out. Thanks to you behind the till... it made my day :) Super lovely staff!

Very friendly service despite it being really busy. Quick and efficient. I would think about the type of coffee cup as mines had no holder and was very hot. Will return to sit in as it seems like a good place to meet friends.

THE place to go for coffee and light snacks if you're in the Marchmont area. Everything is good: coffee, bacon rolls, chocolate and orange pastries (mega tasty) service and ambience. V relaxed. No intrusive music and friendly. An oasis.

Busy cafe, good brunch selection, great coffee. Social hub for the locals. Granola very nice. Service very attentive.

First visit here. Buzzy, busy, good atmosphere with friendly happy staff, good coffee and fab bacon roll. Not expensive either.

Dropped in for a spot on lunch on a Uni visit with daughter 2. Daughter 1 used to live around the road when studying here so had been once before and knew it was good.

Red Box has been in Marchmont for a bit now but I’d never been to it before. I’m glad I have as it surprised me.

Excellent breakfast. Visited here most days on and off for a couple of weeks whilst working nearby. Would recommend

As a local resident I've always tried to support cafes, restaurants and shops in the area. Adds to the blurred backdrop of the myriad mini-markets that pepper the junctions of Marchmont. Sadly I'm left disappointed once more, this time with RedBox.

Visited during the week in the morning for breakfast. Had the full works breakfast. Very good and very tasty. Revisited everyday for the rest of the week. A good cafe!

There's a lot of cafes in Marchmont these days so you've got to be on the ball. Granted, they're all overpriced and this one is no exception. I assume they're going for a boho hipster vibe but that just means very uncomfortable seats and a grubby feel. I don't know whether they're still part of the Cobbs chain and are trying to seem indie but if they are they hide it well. The food was average although they staff were good. No reason for going back though.

Living near by, this place is class for a coffee/tea and a nice breakfast. Their full works is a generous portion of beans, eggs, sausages, bacon and haggis :) Recommend a pit stop for anyone to go there

Visit the area regularly as my son is living local We come here for breakfast everyday and it's a real treat

Stopped here for a quick brunch before we walked up Arthurs Seat. Had a lovely full Scottish Breakfast. Coffee was really nice as well

On our way to the Church Hill Theatre and looking for a venue for a light lunch, we came across Red Box. Friendly and welcoming with a good range of lunch choices plus flat white coffee among the best we have ever tasted. Comfortable inside and outside seating and bike racks. This is very much a community cafe and we enjoyed being part of that experience.

Lovely, friendly staff, service with a smile, excellent coffee and some of the best Eggs Benedict in town! Highly recommended.

The place is lovely, really original, the food was amazing as well, really good homemade scones and Benedict eggs!

Staff were fab wi the little guy I brought along as doing a hot chocolate project. They showed him how they roast the coffee beans and he loved getting a jelly baby with his hot chocolate. Nice touch, nice staff, nice place 👍

A pleasant cafe in the middle of Marchmont, and a regular haunt for my mother and friends. Soup and bread was wholesome, fresh and lovely but the coffee too weak. Perhaps I should have looked at the coffee menu and got an extra shot but wouldn't normally have too in most cafes. Lots of young and older people in and the staff were very friendly. Big glass frontage lets in light and gives the feeling of space. A hotch potch of tables and chairs adds to the places idiosyncrasies. Used to be called Cobbs and now Redbox, Marchmont. There's a Redbox noodle house in town so maybe related.
