Ranfield's Brasserie in Braintree

We had the perfect meal here to celebrate our anniversary (26 years, how have we done it, hahaha). We arrived and enjoyed a glass of sparkling wine and the padron peppers (they were amazing) while we considered what to have for dinner. We didn't feel rushed to order, and the service was excellent from the young members of waiting staff. I had the chicken & bacon pot pie with mash and my wife had the Pork dish. Both were exquisite 👌 We were sorry we didn't have dessert because tge option looked amazing. I really enjoyed my visit and i look forward to returning. I reckon this restaurant could offer a monthly Jazz evening with a set menu midweek, if the owners are reading this then please consider some events.

A wonderful Anniversary lunch on Saturday. 15 people, 3 generations. Everyone agreed the food was excellent, the staff so friendly and helpful and the event was a great success. Thank you, Ranfields.

We took our friends to Ranfields for lunch. One friend is vegan. The restaurant suggested speaking to the vegan prior to the lunch to organise some specific dishes. How thoughtful. On the day service and guidance was superb. Wine was deeply chilled ....much appreciated as it was a very hot day. Mixture of starters ordered and we're cooked to perfection. I had squid which was deliciously tender. Mains arrived piping hot. Lemon sole with a lovely mixture of beautiful veggies sprinkled on top and a delicious sauce. All mains were beautiful. Desserts ordered. I had a lemon and blueberry tart. How the chef made pastry that thin and crisp beats me and gorgeous filling. Lovely mixture of teas and coffees including a fresh mint tea that our friend said ran a close second to fine Moroccan mint tea with actual mint leaves. We left contented happy and full. Love this place and the food was just as wonderful as our last visit. Must go again soon. It's a real treat. Thank you Ranfields. Xxx

Once again this hidden gem delivered! I went to a jazz night with family. Three course set menu with 2 choices of starters, mains and desserts. A glass of bubbly, cheese and bacon Arancini balls on arrival. We had the Thai mussels to start. Followed by the pork belly then the fresh fruit and homemade lemon curd Eton mess to finish. The food was absolutely OUTSTANDING! They were the best mussels I have ever! Eaten. I drank the sauce with a spoon 😂 The pork belly was melt in the mouth. The noodles and Asian veg it was served with was delicious! The Eton mess was lovely. It had star fruit, fresh pineapple amongst other fresh fruit. The meringue was lovely and gooey. The three piece jazz band was great and made a lovely ambience! The service was second to none as ALWAYS! Well done to all staff. You never fail to disappoint!!!

Sharing our wedding anniversary with dear friends (albeit, 60 years apart) we try to meet up and celebrate together. This tine we travelled over from Surrey and went up to Coggeshall for lunch and then to visit the wonderful Paycocke's House and Garden. A simple google search for somewhere to eat happened to produce this absolute gem. The staff were amazingly friendly, the food superb and the prices reasonable. We were enjoying our lunch so much that we stayed longer than intended and unfortunately missed the play that we had intended to see at the House. Definitely a restaurant to recommend and one we intend to return to sooner rather than later.

We enjoyed a 4 course dinner at the Brasserie - the food was good - though I have to be honest and say that I was a bit disappointed with aspects of our dinner which I found to be a bit more on the average side. Its a bit pricey for what it is. However, it could be great! Its not far off so I really hope they keep going because each course was very well presented and served by an amazing team of excellent staff who really couldn't do enough for you, were very good at it and struck the right balance of good service and relaxed enough atmosphere to chill and enjoy your evening. Lovely little place and I do recommend it!

We decided to try this as we often pass it. What a gem of a place. Such friendly, welcoming staff and menu is fantastic for all dietary needs. I am a vegetarian and was spoilt for choice here. We both can’t wait to go back. A cosy, friendly and warm atmosphere.

It’s very good. We had the two course lunch at £23 a head. Food was nice. Service was good. The venue is pretty much the same as it’s been for the past 35 years. Pleasant, clean and bright and airy. Could be excellent, but isn’t yet.

Amazing food as always, well worth the travel to the village of Coggeshall. We travelled 25 miles just to come back and it did not disappoint. Will be back in the new year.

We chose from the lunch set menu. Burrata & Chorizo was heavy in the chorizo and too light on the burrata (small morsels to decorate) salad swimming in oil so very unbalanced with all the chorizo. Main course Fish & Chips - chips like bullets and fish unseasoned and dry inside.. The tartare sauce was odd with cucumber and big chunks of raw onion rather than gherkins and capers. Not nice. Service very slow. Really disappointed as we were entertaining a valued customer.

Visited on a Wednesday night as a couple. Apparently there were two other tables booked but they both telephoned to cancel while we were there. So had the restaurant to ourselves with fabulous food & service.

Decided to celebrate a new job with a girlfriend here on the back of the great reviews. It surpassed our expectations by a long way. Such imaginative flavour combinations, beautifully presented and served with an understated, chilled vibe. No need to go to London for high end food!

We were a party of four. Will was our waiter and he looked after us like we were his family ( of aged and eccentric Aunts and Uncles ). We came for a late Friday lunch. What a treat! Cocktails were perfect and the Bellini was an immaculate replica of a Harry Bar’s signature cocktail. We had a very naughty selection of warm breads with garlic and bacon and pesto. Starters caused a stir with the mussels and the burrata plus a bit of a fight over the wontons and my tempura smoked sea trout. We all wanted everything. Mains were met with silence because our faces were deeply buried in the chilly cid fish bites, confit duck, pork belly and rump of lamb. Chaos ensued as we all fought over the dauphinoise spuds - glorious. All this washed down with excellent selection of wines. We asked to see the maestro Chef JB came out and talked us through his culinary magic. All in all a wonderful experience in the most charming of villages. We will be back!

What a find! A beautiful location with fantastic food. The staff were so friendly and helpful and helped make the evening special. Forgot to mention the delicious cocktails. They also have a great hidden garden area.

I have visited Ranfields on multiple occasions, extremely please every time (hence the often returns!). Such friendly and fast service, no problem too large, always happy to answer questions. The restaurant is set up lovely, the atmosphere is cosy and warming yet sophisticated. The tables are well spread out following COVID guidelines and staff wearing masks A stunning meal, food comes efficiently to the table, amazing presentation and quality, fresh food. I ordered calamari (religiously my favourite!), the fillet steak (dreamy! Cooked to perfection!) they also were able to make my own request of sauce to order! And mini doughnuts. Highly recommend! The team helped to make our meal personal by making a birthday dessert for my friend. The staff also made cocktails (that weren’t on the menu) for us when asked, really made our night special for us! We arrived early, was not a problem got seated, a lot of noise of talking laughing, not really professional. Ordered a drink was not asked whether ice or not . Pint ordered as well. When finished, was not asked whether wanted another one, just lit candles and left the glass. We waited at least 30 mins for the starters. It was ok nothing special, could not see let a lone taste the crab. Sauce nice. Wine ordered had all bits in the bottom and it was like sediment. Thought I would try the fillet steak, again had pate smeared on top. And some kind of hard circle. Then we found out it was bread, but rock hard. No point for that. The rib eye steak was nice the snow peas, we was told oh there just sugar snap peas. Why are they called snow peas, the chips again seem to be heated up in some way. Or just chip them and oven bake them. Again long wait for dinner. Mushrooms nice, peas nice. We decided to have pudding thought this has to be quicker. But it wasn't. Long wait. That was really nice . It was like pulling teeth all night and we could not wait to leave. Masks seem to be a waste of time some wore. People think I'm only Com ing in and sitting down but it's to eliminate the risk. Otherwise Restaurants will close too, if they don't in force it. Whether people are going in and out. Wear the mask ..... Do we complain No why cos you don't want everyone staring. But nothing special and definatley not worth the money. Would we return Nope been to a lot better . Service miles to slow. Not for us.

Due to the layout and location of this extraordinary restaurant, it sadly closed its doors due to Covid-19 until September I believe . We booked as soon as they reopened. And have visited twice.This extraordinary venue is top of our list of “gourmet restaurants”. Attention to detail, little extras, appetisers and palette cleansers are amazing.The food - well, such a diverse menu catering for all tastes. They will stylise your dish to suit your specific preferences, Every dish spectacularly presented and a joy to eat. Everything selected a delight to savour.My admiration for the way they have “re-invented themselves” in such difficult times is unreserved. This little GEM in the tiny village of Coggeshall will struggle to keep their doors open if people don’t go out of their way to travel the extra few miles to get there off the A12 or A120 near Kelvedon & Marks Tey. We intend to visit again VERY soon. Thanks to the excellent chef “John Boy”, Sarah and all the amazingly well trained, competent staff who excel in “service”. Good luck . We don’t want to lose you.

This is truly a great dining experience. The fillet steak was delicious and cooked perfectly. I had meatballs to start with which was a truly wonderful. The service is great. One word of warning, chips are extra. We will definitely be back.

First visit under new name and ownership.We visited on a fairly quiet midweek evening -- the service was good.Decor and ambience unchanged - still good.The food was tasty and well presented but I found the portions to be a bit small.I had arancini to start and they were very nice but not enough --- 3 20-25 mm balls I seem to remember. My main was soft shelled crab which was very good but served with a small portion of noodles and far too many crackers which didn't really add anything other than fill the plate out. More noodles and less (or no) crackers would have been better.

We visited Ranfields for lunch armed with a voucher from Travelzoo.. We were surprised to be seated at a very good table by the window rather than deep in the restaurant. We found all the food presented to be very good and unusually full of flavour and the dishes were imaginitive. It was a limited menu but we found that we would have happily ordered anything from it.There was nothing wrong with the service but we felt it didn't quite match the standard of the restaurant. (a note to the management - please stop the staff adding "at all" to every enquiry to the guests as in "Do you want any more bread at all". It is really annoying).

Spent £330 on New Year’s Eve and it was not good food I’m so angry and disgusted I spent that money on such an important night and not a single course was good!The people here should be ashamed but they won’t be cuz no one else will complain cuz they’re all over 70 and rich!they did nothing better than I can get either elsewhere or at home and I feel robbed.The only people in that place who had a good meal were the family of the singer everyone else was completely robbed. Randomly they had a completely different menu that looked half decent! Wtf?!?!?!My family all live in Coggeshall and said this place was good but expensive! They were right on it being expensive but it was not good and I was completely fleeced!This place should be ashamed, duck was pointless and poor and I mean really poor, I had one scallop on that course on a pile of nasty bubble and squeak wtf!!!!!!!! The beef was good but hardly anything there that was it and the dessert was something u could do yourself and I had one bite!!! Terrible! They robbed me because it was New Year’s Eve!I’m not exaggerating or upset just because of the money there was no value for money and other than a small piece of beef I didn’t enjoy a single mouthful! I ate it because I was starving and I didn’t want to ruin our New Years but I wish I’d given the money to charity now because this was pointless! Not for them they’ve made an 80 percent profit but for me it was like being mugged.I watched the family of the singer with their real courses and I can’t believe we got served the cheap nasty stuff after paying £110 a head! £110 a head!!!!!!!!!! Plus another £110!!!!!!I am absolutely disgusted with this place and if you eat here with these appalling immoral people then you only have yourself to blame.I have eaten all around the world in Michelin starred restaurants and I know good food and exceptional food and this hole of a place mugged us whilst they treated the family of the singer with actual decency!!I wouldn’t give a bucket of pee to eat here again or ever go near this place again they are used to people with more money than sense going there but they showed their true colours tonight!!What a waste of my New Year’s Eve id have been better off staying at home! Beautiful restaurant festooned with paintings. Fantastic food and service. Our dog was made welcome and they have a special area for diners with dogs. We’ve been here many times and will be returning many times.

Late Sunday lunchtime visit for four. My three companions were very happy with all their 3 courses so perhaps I was the unlucky one.

Ate here with my family on Sunday and so pleased we did! Service was excellent, we were well look after and our young children were welcomed and fed nice and quickly which meant we could enjoy our meal.

A small number of couples eating with one young waitress working, gave me a menu and took order promptly. Whilst waiting for food two men, clearly regulars, came in and went straight to the bar. They proceeded to have a very loud conversation littered by swearing and obscenities, covering personal health, work colleagues, work partners and customers. None of which was edifying, pleasant to hear nor conducive to a good meal and a glass of wine.

My husband and I last visited 20 years ago when it was Baumann's Brasserie and as we were in the area at the weekend we thought it would be pleasant to return and enjoy lunch. However, there were a number of issues which mean it will be another 20 years before we consider returning.

Oh dear! Or party of 6 had high expectations of this restaurant but unfortunately it did not meet them. Staff are quite young with no front of house personality, which is what this place is missing. A friend and I chose a vegetarian risotto which was really bland, tasteless even with salt and pepper.

Went here with my wife and two friends for dinner. Fantastic food and service. Loved it and looking forward to the next visit already!

Although it’s a lovely old building some of the tables had no light near them . The food was ok the service was quite good but the waiting staff were just stood at the bar chatting in stead of asking if all was ok or paying attention to the customers.

My wife and I visited Ranfield’s Brasserie for dinner. Such a nice little restaurant, delightfully decorated and adorned with paintings and various artworks and having an ambience which is comfortable, welcoming and not noisy. The staff were pleasant, helpful and efficient which contributed to making the evening most pleasant. The food and wines were very good and the whole meal was most enjoyable. We found that the starters were especially delightful and the mains were very good. This is a restaurant that we will definitely be returning to in the future.

A wonderful little find. We were very well catered for and there was great communication between the chef and my Stepmum regarding her allergies, the waitress passed all the information along. Would return again ASAP!

We love our get away visits here service is first class food tastes like fresh local produce and the ambiance is wonderful. It’s always spotless and your never rushed thank you all so much from the Shilton’s x

My wife and I went on a Tuesday night using the Meerkat 241 deals having been to the cinema. We booked for 7.45pm but arrived early at 7.15pm and were seated with no problem. The A La Carte menu has quite a wide selection with also a seperate vegetarian menu and a Table D'Hot. So all bases covered.
