We called today for lunch before we watched our team Barnsley Fc play Northampton Town Fc,The food was really nice staff were friendly and the Restaurant was very clean,The chips we had with our meals were proper chips not skinny fries or Bits and not greasy,Would Definitely call again if we are in Northampton again,Many thanks

We arrived shortly before closing but the staff were still really polite and friendly. They were excellent with wife who is gluten-free, advising the best types of fish to have due to the differences in temperature and type of batter compared to gluten. I had the cod and chips which was delicious nice and crisps and not leaking too much oil. Would definitely recommend.

The chip shop serves great freshly cooked for and chips including gluten free ! We had gluten free fish and chips and non gluten free as well. Will be returning!

As a coeliac it is very rare to find a place locally where you can have a treat of gluten free fish and chips. It is an absolute joy to have this restaurant in Northampton where you can enjoy this wonderful treat without worry. The owners are very on it with ensuring the meal is safe to eat. The chips and fish are always a good size and very tasty. It was also nice to enjoy a gluten free pudding too. A must go for anyone in Northampton who is coeliac or following a gluten free diet. Thank you for providing this option for people like myself.

Been going to Ramsbottoms for many, many years. Always Great fish and chips and have not once had a bad meal. Owners and staff couldn't be more friendly. Can’t wait for the next visit.

I always come here for a bite to eat when I'm in town centre. Quality is always good, service is always fast and staff are always friendly. Couldn't recommend this place enough. Chips aren't the cheapest around but you definitely pay for what you get as the chips are delicious!

Always first class with both service and food, spotlessly clean, extremely good value and the best service. All the staff go the extra mile to make us comfortable, my husband has many health problems and is also a wheelchair user they make him feel so special nothing is too much trouble to keep him happy and I am confident we are safe as their covid policy is excellent Thank you to all staff for. including Jack, for such a great service

We had a fantastic meal at this in town gem,good chips shop's are few and far between these days. Not surprising the place was very busy even at 12 noon,everyone seemed to know everyone else.(a good sign of regulars). Summing up,very nice & friendly staff,and a classic British dish done how it should be. Prices are very reasonable to put it mildly,10/10 for everything.(Great).!

I had haddock and chips, which was cooked to order. The restaurant was clean and the staff were pleasant and helpful. The meal itself was OK but nothing special. I thought the price was on the high side.

Just had another excellent meal on Friday, i had fish and chip special which includes mushy peas bread and butter and tea or coffee, great food and a friendly atmosphere, all at under 8 pound, what a bargain. Many thanks and kind regards mr John cox

Iooked forward to traditional fish and chips on Good Friday 2019. We brought cod and chips yuck the cod?? was tough the batter soggy and the chips laying in oil and tasted old-reheated? £7.20 each and a very long wait- shame as this chip shop used to be outstanding- will not be returning

Popped in for a bag of chips. Used to be best chips in town with crispy outside and fluffy inside but the bag I got was far from it and as far from quality chips you can get! They were soggy grey things congealed together in a lump! I did complain saying have you changed the potatoes and was told the spuds were the same as they always were so can only assume the fryer does not know how to fry chips as any fish shop fryer should know how to cook them. Was offered another bag but why would you have another bag of rubbish chips and embarress the fryer even more? Really sad as was a very good chippy.

I grew up visiting Whitby and Scarborough in the 80s, and I always remember the fish and chips with fondness. We always visit Ramsbottoms when we come to Northampton purely because they have managed to capture that great taste and quality that many other fish and chip restaurants cannot provide. Their fish and chips tastes like I remember on the North-East coast: thin and crispy batter which is not dripping in oil and really fresh fish, what more could you want?

Freshly cooked fish and chips, tasteful and light. Everybody is super nice and friendly, it is a great, simple, affordable pleasure

Fantastic food and great service all for a very reasonable price. I go here regularly with my grandma and we both thoroughly enjoy our visits. Never had a bad experience with the food or staff.

I have no idea what they fry the food in here but the taste is awful. Some of the worst fish & chips I’ve tasted. 25 minute wait for them. I explained to the young man working there they tasted poor. His response was “Leave a review”. Shocking customer service. We both felt sick after. AVOID!

I throughly enjoyed my meal. Came here on a quick lunch break, ordered chips,cheese and gravy. Wow the gravy was the best I've ever tasted,chips i could not fault. Absolutely fantastic. Will sure return very soon!

we have been visiting this fish restaurant on a weekly basis for many years, nothing really changed, a very warm welcome by the then owner, the extraordinary quality of food, and at at great prices, unfortunately however ownership has changed ,we used the restaurant today at 1pm ,7/11/2018 and ordered our usual fish and chips , many of the chips were green and tasted unlike they used to, I also suspect the cooking oil has changed , our last three visits were also disappointing the guy that does the cooking has worked there for many years ,so not his fault ,I am sad to say we wont be using this establishment again and would rate it as average at best

This was my first visit to this long established restaurant, located in what for me is the rather sad and ever declining centre of my old home town. I was back to see friends and popped in mid-afternoon Friday, when it was rather quiet in the restaurant. Indeed, I think that there was never more than four of us inside. Consequently and given my state of hunger, I cannot quite fathom why it took a good 15 minutes for the haddock and chips that I ordered, to appear.

Having read the Trip Advisor reviews I was looking forward to my visit to the restaurant. I have to say I wasn't disappointed. The staff were friendly and the service was prompt. The fish and chips were lovely and really very good value. Will definitely visit again if I find myself in Northampton!

I was plesantly suprised by this restaurant. The fish was cooked to perfection as was the chips.When I had finished the meal the owner came over and asked if I enjoyed meal in a courteous manner. The service was also good by the waitress. If ever I am in northampton again I will definitely go again.

This is the best chippy in town and I have never had a bad meal here......today I went in and their is a sign saying they are using new potatoes for the chips which contain more moisture so they will not be crispy ......and they weren't just a plate of soggy chips ! I complained but was given another plate of soggy chips ! I know the best spuds are the older fluffy type but I have never had chips like that in Ramsbottoms in the 30 years I've used it. I can only think somebody has ordered the wrong type of spuds ! The mushy peas were cold as well , fortunately the fish was very good as usual but as I paid £35 for the three of us I expect better quality. I will not go in again till the winter until the chips are made using older potatoes and I'm sure the sign in their was because people were complaining !

If you want generous portions served by friendly people in a clean and comfortable 'chippy' restaurant, this is the place for you. They get the batter just right, no soggy bit underneath, and the fish is flaky and chunky, not flat and grey as in some chippies. The menu is extensive for a chippy, the quality is excellent and the cost is what you'd expect. It is, in my opinion, the best chippy in Northampton.

What can I say, absolutely shell shocked to find this gem in Northampton. Service amazing, food amazing, cleanliness on point and most of all at affordable prices. So glad we found this place, my family and ended up spending a whole afternoon enjoying the desserts too. Great place - try it you won’t be disappointed. I will definitely be coming back.

We ate here on a Saturday lunchtime, and we were really glad that we did. The quality of the food was excellent: the fish was fresh, and the batter was not too thick at all—perfectly done. The staff were attentive and friendly, and the restaurant was looking bright and welcoming. All in all, a great place for really good quality fish and chips.

Came here for an evening meal before the theatre, I ordered the standard sized meal and my Friend went for the the large meal. Wow, the portion sizes are extremely generous. The fish was cooked to perfection and the chips are delicious. Sauces are served in sachets so no previous diners sloppy seconds here. My only disappointment was the vinegar on the table was pretty tasteless. On paying we were asked how the meal was I commented that they needed Sarson's and was advised that they did have this in sachets too. If only I had know this would of been a 5 star review. Great service and all served with bread and a mug of tea, what is there not to love about this place.

It was my first time in the U.K. and this is where we stopped for fish and chips. The service was fast and friendly. The fish was very fresh, some of the best I have ever had. It was crispy and flaky without being oily at all. The chips were made out of hand-cut potatoes and were perfectly fried. Perfect experience.

I have been here multiple times since moving to Northampton. The fish and chips are excellent and the breakfasts are great. Best chippy by far in Northampton, some chippys in Northampton are abysmal.

Really fast service, super cheap, and friendly staff! just be aware that the minimum amount to pay by card is 5.00 other than that, its an amazing place to go, you can tell its a favorite of the locals. The food is very tasty, i recommend the battered sausage with baked beans and chips!

I popped in for a lunchtime takeaway and ordered a large haddock and chips. I asked for the fish to be well done and as I waited about 20 minutes, I thought it would be great. Although the fish itself was really good, as were the chips, the batter let it down. I have yet to find a fish and chip shop where the batter is cooked all the way through, it was practically raw on the inside. Could someone explain why this is so ? Is it because the batter is too thick to start with ? I would love to find out.

I visited Albert .J. Ramsbottoms Fish and Chip Restaurant last thursday lunchtime with my friend. Such good value only £ 6.35 for the "special" which including a really large piece of cod ,chips,mushy peas, bread and butter and a cup of tea. All beautifully cooked and well presented . Good friendly service included . Well done to all the staff .

Very disappointed with our lunch today. The fish was soggy and very wet and very tasteless. Didn’t want to make a fuss and complain but won’t bother coming back here and would recommend others don’t try it either. Waste of money.

On our family shopping trip to Northampton City Centre we walked past this busy restaurant. To our surprise it does Traditional Fish & Chips eat in, not many of these about these days. Me & my family decided to have the “special meal”.

I’ve been coming in for the last 2 months at lunch time for burger and chips the last couple of times I’ve been in the food has been awful it amazes me for food hygiene that staff are serving and handling food taking money and not washing there hands 3 different members of staff cooked my burger the lady at the front taking payments was handling money then touched my food without washing her hands the food in this place is much better when the other guy cooking is working the chips today were awful I can’t believe how bad in a couple of months this place has become no food hygiene one example was the other week the owners were counting up loads of change at the till the didn’t wash there hands before handling my food I will be looking for somewhere else to have my lunch from now on

i fancied a quick lunch after shopping in town so decided on a chip butty I wish I hadn't bothered as it was the worst I have ever eaten the chips were undercooked and bland tasting and the roll it was served in was clearly stale I wouldn't even feed my dog with it I should have gone to jennys where you can get decent food I would say to anybody avoid this place as there are much better chip shops in northampton

It's not often I see others reap the rewards of constructive criticism almost immediately, but today was an impressive example of self-correction. On entering Albert J. Ramsbottom, Abington Street, Northampton I noticed that the generous portions of chips on customers' plates were a little pale in colour. I almost turned round and left because with fish I prefer my chips golden and crispy. However, I've eaten at AJR before and it has always been good in the past, so I placed my order. The fish and chips duly arrived on the pale side, I tried them and found them hot but slightly undercooked. I spoke with my charmingly efficient server Olympia who returned the plate to the cooks and a few minutes later was served with excellent golden fish and chips. What delighted me was my feedback was accepted with good grace, it triggered a correction - perhaps to the fat fryer timer -and I saw that other customer served subsequently benefit from the correction with lovely looking plates of food.

What a wonderful pla(i)ce Great family friendly atmosphere. Brilliant service and the food is exactly as it should be at the most perfect price. Keep up the good work!

Went here in 1996, when we lived locally, and it was good. Apparently it has had its ups and downs in the meantime but if this visit is anything to go by, it is up right now.We went late Tuesday so not exactly full but staff attentive and I got rock salmon which I love and at a good price.We had a nice wine with the meal which we sort of expect living in Spain, all Fish & Chip places here have this option.There was quite a lot of takeout customers so it seem popular locally.Glad we came back, glad it was as good as we remembered.

Never disappointed, that's why we go back, always a clean warm friendly welcome andgood food. There are other options on the menu but with light crispy batter and very tasty white fish and excellent chips (no greasy plates) the mushy peas just top it all off.No hesitation in recommending . I dined here on 27th January 2017. As I was on my own, I was shown at my own request to a table for two. Within 5 minutes of being seated, a waitress asked if I was ready to order. I ordered the 'special which was Fish, chips and mushy peas with a slice of bread and butter and either tea, coffee or a soft drink. I asked for a glass of Cola. This offer costs £6.35. I had difficulty finishing it due to the generous portion sizes.I used to live in a village near Northampton, and I remember when this establishment first opened. This was in the region of 1981 or 1982. They were good then, and equally as good now. Staff are friendly, food is excellent value. What more could you want?

This has been here for a number of years, with second to none fish and chips.Easily the best around, it's all cooked fresh, and plenty of seating area to relax and enjoy your freshly cooked meal with a glass of wine if you so wish.Good value.

Looking for somewhere to get some Lunch in the middle of Northampton ,we came across this little (so we thought chip shop) being a wheelchair user sometimes makes life a little difficult but not here, the staff couldn't have done anymore to be helpful. ordered a standard fish and chips , Freshly cooked fish and chips, takes me back to the good old days in the East End where there were some really good fish and chip shops, Will definitely go back next time we are here, would recommend it to anybody, Must remember to try the Rock Salmon next time

We drive past several Fish and Chip shops on our way to Ramsbottoms usually on a Saturday evening.The Fish and Chips is superb, the best I have had since Scarborough, service is efficient and friendly with a pleasant eating area which is the best way to relax and enjoy the meal.Other meals are available and look very nice but we stick to the Fish.Prices are very reasonable.Why would we go anywhere else?

Personal, friendly service. Walk in, take a seat, place your order, and as it is freshly-cooked for you, enjoy the fruit juice and the included tea or coffee. The photo features the large breakfast option, (that's three rashers) and at the time of review cost £5.80, which I believe represents fantastic value. I highly recommend.

A really good place for fish and chips in Northampton. Staff and service is grea, they really can`t do more. We have used as a takeaway in the past too, and have always enjoyed that.

As the title says it's the best I've had in Northampton I've been going there for 8 yrs and never had anything like it anywhere in Northampton the special is a bargin but if you've got an appetite go for the whooper it's huge and I guarantee you won't leave hungry

Met some friends for lunch and was pleased to see the cafe had a special offer for seniors comprising fish, chips and peas plus a slice of bread and a cup of tea or coffee for £5. It was all very tasty and obviously excellent value and the service was great too.

I go here a few times a year and the food and service has always been 1st class it don't matter if it's chips to takeaway or sitting at the tables it's always good

Typical British Sit Down Fish and Chips Restaurant. I had the "Healthy Option Grilled fish with Salad and small portion of Fries"Spoiled it all by indulging in a Mocca Ice cream which also went down a treat.Ramsbottoms caters for all but tends to have a more mature clientele, many who are regulars, and like me, return regularly!Looking forward to my next visit for another healthy option, but with out the Ice Cream.

With my husband and 3 year old grandson I had lunch at Ramsbottoms before going to the pantomime. Service was prompt and the fish and chips was great. There was a good variety to choose from in the adult and kids menus, and the staff were very friendly.

We had a lovely family meal on a Saturday night, kids wolfed it down, we had fish, chips, mushy peas and a cup of tea, all perfect. Fresh tasting peas, great chips, and a tasty portion of fish in a light batter. The staff came and chatted with the kids, and made us feel welcome. This is a great find....they also do takeaways.

We have always considered Ramsbottoms the best chippy in our area and we were wondering what the new owners would do with the place... It is now an excellent chippy restaurant as well as the traditional fish 'n' chips take-away. The service is friendly and welcoming, the food is really excellent in generous portions and the new boss has a wonderful sense of humour, no matter how busy the place gets - and it does.We were delighted with the now extensive menu and the prices are more than reasonable. Have had the mini fish and chips in the past but as it was a little cool decided to sit inside, best decision we made all day.Settled down in a warm and well lit area and the waitress took our order, didn't have to wait long before our fish and chips arrived, large fish and plenty of chips with mushy pea's in a tub. (good idea). May have been the best fish and chips I have ever had outside the East Coast.We made a mistake by not asking for the OAP special just asked for the special, proved to be a little to much for my other half.Will 'sit in' on our next visit, if it's rainingThank you all the staff as Ramsbotton, a credit to the town

The best fish and chip shop in the county. My Mum who died on Saturday was a regular. We managed to take her there in a wheelchair a couple of days before she died. The excellent service received from all the staff was outstanding. Great portion sizes for the price too

I have visited this restaurant on and off since I was younger. I now have 4 children of my own and they love it if we say we are stopping there for lunch. In the last few years we have been coming here as a treat whilst in town shopping. Today we came in to town just to eat there. Its a wonderful place to eat, the service is impeccable and the team there are really nice and seem to go out of the way to make us welcome and the kids love it. Its a special place that is always at the top of our list when we are thinking of eating out. The food is always delicious and just what you want from a fish and chip restaurant with lots of choice.

We called Ramsbottoms to check they were open (10 minutes to closing time), and the owner took our order, put it on to cook and had it ready for when we arrived just as they were cleaning up for the end of the day.Great service, great fish and chips.

Take away or eat in the restaurant , with special offer of eating in for OAP's yes a smaller portion but with bread& butter + tea or coffee & an ice cream for a sweet not at all a bad deal for just under £6 . Take aways either in paper or if you need to take home a box which helps to keep your fish & chips warm , staff always polite & happy ! Only thing to dislike having to wait . I want mine NOW !

I am on a personal quest to find the perfect Fish & Chip restaurant. I stumbled upon this one - actually called Albert J Ramsbottom - today. The place was capacious and clean; the staff were very attentive. A plus point for being offered the option of brown bread without having to ask (or be disappointed). Had the (cod) special - see photo. It was clearly freshly cooked and the chips were crisp outside and soft inside - and remained so, Meal was £6.35 and included a hot drink. Would recommend to anyone visiting and will call in again next time I am in Northampton!

Spotlessly clean, friendly staff and a reasonable choice of meals (you don't have to have fish n chips but you'd be a fool not to), the special of cod and chips with bread and butter, a cuppa of your favourite poison or a soft drink and ice cream for dessert (or have mushy peas with your main instead) costs a very good £6.25. If you're the hungry type you can have an extra large helping for an extra £1 or the megafish for £9!Thoroughly recommended

We don't often eat in for fish and chips. We were impressed by the warm welcome from the many staff, it was just after the lunchtime peak. The service cleanliness and the food were great.We qualify for the senior citizen meal, which came with choices of garden or mushy peas, white or brown bread and tea or coffee. Superb quality, adequate size meal and real chips too. We will return again, it seem fair for us less time scheduled folk to call in when the busy period is over.

Stopped off in Ramsbottoms today while shopping in Northampton. Glad we did. Food was amazing. I had seafood combo with chips garden peas and salad garnish. Was fresh tasty, couldnt fault the food at all. Hubby had large fish and chips with mushy peas, was also faultless. Wish I had taken a photo. Portions were large couldnt eat all my chips.Very clean restaurant, not a chip on the floor in sight, unlike some restaurants. Very friendly efficient staff especially our waitress.Had two teas two coffees and on desert, came to a total of just over £24.will definitely be visiting again. Thank you Ramsbottoms.

Living in Germany, I miss really good fish and chips.We were in Northampton to see a show at the Derngate and decided to stop here to try them out.Wonderful! I had the Fish & Chips Special which included beans, 2 slices of bread and butter (for chip butties) and a cup of tea.I thorougly enjoyed my meal. Great taste and just a lovely plate of great comfort food!The service was fine, no problems at all.Highly recommended!!!!

If you love fish and chips then look no further than Ramsbottoms. You can of course get cheaper versions in pubs and cafe's elsewhere in town but none will touch these. Beautifully crisp batter and if you want your fish skinned it's not a problem. Very generous portions too.

I mostly have small cod and chips. It's quick and fresh and tastes like fish and chips should taste.
