Located at the Slack Lane entrance of Shipley Country Parknis this perfectly decent and spacious cafe, offering valuable refreshment to the ramblers, birdwatchers and families that frequent the park. Offering everything from cooked breakfasts, paninis, sandwiches and a wide variety of drinks and cakes, this cafe truly is a valuable part of the park. We enjoyed hot cobs and tea, along with a lovely caramel shortcake biscuit. Sadly, however, Derbyshire County Council don't seem to share this view, as their over fastidious, nit-picking intrusion into the running of the business to whom they rent the premises. The upshot of it is that last year Derbyshire County Council informed the cafe that they were increasing their rent by an extraordinary 66% As if this wasn't bad enough, this rent increase came with the stipulation that additional rent increases may well be incurred if the business continued to be successful, with level of rent increase tied directly to financial turnover and/or business profits. This would require Ramblers Cafe to submit their accounts to DCC as part of an "answerability" agreement. Thanks to a (totally justifiable) level of anger from the public, this was revised by DCC, with the renf increase dropping by 50% to a 33% increase, but with the answerability process (with all its intrusiveness) remaining in place. Perhaps unsurprisingly, despite the rent being directly linked to turnover, should the cafe's turnover drop (which is entirely conceivable, given the rise in minimum wage, rise in food/ingredient costs, rise in energy prices etc etc), the rent increase of 33% would not go down. Ultimately this has meant that this cafe has had to close its doors - and indeed will be doing so as of the end of March 2024.  DCC have allowed an independent business to go to the wall because they are desperately trying to plug the haping holes in their revenue stream - gaping holes brought about by their own mismanagement. At time of writing, you still have time to visit here, and I urge you to do so!

We visited here today for the first time, for a short break before going for a walk around Shipley. We went for a hot chocolate & a cappuccino, for food we has a full english breakfast & a lasagna with chips & salad. All the food & drink was nice, however the service in general was very slow, from ordering to the food coming out. I’m sure we will definitely come again in the future, as its a handy place to visit for refreshments.

A group out went for coffee and scones today. The raspberry and vanilla stone I had was delicious and even slightly warm as it was lovely and fresh, however my daughter had one two from the display cabinet which was clearly not fresh. It was gard and very dry. The taste between the two was huge. We left disappointed that the quality between two scones that were meant to be the same was so different.

A pleasant cafe set within the fabulous Shipley Country Park. Simply decorated and with a nice ambience. Seating outside as well which is handy with kids and/or dogs. Was it too early at 10am to have a chip cob - hubbie said no! And very nice it was as well. Tempting array of cakes to try and huge scones. Took a couple of both home, delicious! Nice overall but we prefer the tea room at Derby Lodge, still within the park, about 20 mins walk away.

Absolutely disgusted ordered a milkshake which came warm ! When we asked to change it was advised that’s the temperature the milk comes out the fridge The Staff member was very abrupt so settled for a refund. Ordered a child’s jacket potato meal which came with fruit however the pineapple was inedible as had been cut with an onion knife seriously makes you wonder about food hygiene . Whilst we were there another customer took two milkshakes back I think a new fridge might help , Definitely wouldn’t recommend on a food or service level

Everytime I've had the homemade quiche it has been delicious, and I enjoyed my serving of quiche today. Unfortunately the large salad I had with it let the meal down, as it included brown edged lettuce and some small slimy leaves! I informed them of the problem and they brought out another salad, which was acceptable, on a smaller plate. So I juggled my part eaten quiche on to the new plate and had to go to the counter to ask for another portion of salad dressing which I was given, but no one came back to check if everything was now ok with my meal or to collect the discarded salad from our small table. We sat and waited for 10 minutes after finishing our meal, but no member of staff approached our table to check on my meal or to collect our plates. Yet there were staff around, bringing out meals and one member of staff was chatting to customers she obviously knew, but no one came to our table. Very disappointed in the original salad and customer service especially as it has always been a cafe that I've looked forward to going to for the quiche and salad. Maybe time for a change!

Fair prices and quality, portion sizes are just about right, the lack of a card machine is very frustrating though and there’s really no excuse for this anymore with the number of providers and even iphone apps that allow phones to handle the transaction, even the ticket machines in the car park take card!!It’s a shame because we would have ordered much more to eat and drink and were limited to what change we had.

I must say, the portions of food here are fantastic! Whilst in the queue, I saw the scones which were about the size of my face! My boyfriend and I enjoyed ham, egg and chips and a jacket potato respectively and both were very nice. However, the service was a little slow, it was a bank holiday, but the cafe wasn't overly packed. The till staff were just a little timid, a few times individuals were asked questions regarding the food, and each time the individual had to ask another member of staff as they didn't know. The food also took quite a while to come out (though this may be as it is fresh?!). Numerous customers had chip butties, and they looked absolutely wonderful, so next time we come, I will be having one of these! Finally, I didn't realise until I had already bought a bottle of water, that you can just ask for tap water, and they will provide you with a glass of water for free, rather than paying for a bottle.

The coffee shop is situated in the heart of shipley park and is easily accesible for walkers. The service is satisfactory however, on a busy day like today we had to wait 45 mins for our food and with small children this is a challenge given the fact that their food came out last. The menu has a vast choice.but servoce could be improved by having a smaller menu done to a higher standard. The shop itself is decorated in a pleasant yet uncoordinated fashion. It was a little pricey considering the wait and average service. The food was nice but nothing special and there are many other places that sell better food at a better price with better service. Overall our visit was average but we would and will visit again in the future.

The Toad in the hole is lovely. The home made Gluten Free quiche has disappeared from the menu. Occasionally there has been homemade Gluten Free cake or Dime Bar but not recently. A very limited choice of packaged Gluten Free cakes are available. I tend to use this cafe most weeks after a walk with a friend but I don't always want Toad in the Hole. A visit for lunch after a leisurely walk around Shipley Park.I do like the quirky, homely decor of this cafe with bunting, cutlery clock, fairies, patterned tablecloths, signs, plate design wallpaper and bench seating.Where I think it goes a bit wrong is the menu. Its on the wall on big painted boards with small writing which is too small to read from most of the tables. And its also a far too detailed and full menu! A smaller menu, done well, with menus on the tables would be so much better. Also there is still limited choice for vegetarians. I did notice a gluten-free main meal option.I think this is a problem when its busy and causes queues as it takes longer to decide and order.Having said that the food we had, (kept it simple with chip cobs) arrived quickly (as it was still early lunchtime and quiet), with generous portions and was very nice. And luckily we even had room for homemade cake afterwards. Pricey (£3.50 each) but huge portions! To be honest we have had better cakes as they were just a little dry but still nice. The huge scones are well worth trying as well!Overall an enjoyable visit.

Unfortunately the past 4 times I've came here to eat the place has apparently stopped doing food, this is over an hour before closing time. It's become a bit of a joke between my family because every time we come it's the same old story so I've yet to try the food. The cakes and hot drinks are very nice and the place itself is nice but the staff always feel the need to be whipping round cleaning up around you, putting chairs on tables over an hour before closing. When you're sat there trying to feed a screaming baby and trying to eat and drink your own purchases it just makes you feel rushed and even more stressed, I don't see the need to be packing chairs away that far from closing. It's also very annoying that the staff look on as you stand looking at the extensive menu on the wall trying to decide between the vast amounts of food to then be told food was stopped ages ago and it's only cakes and drinks. It's a shame because a lot of money gets lost and this place has the potential to be excellent.A few improvements needed.

We arrived at the cafe at 3.20pm not knowing it was shutting at 3.30pm. We walked in and three people were behind the counter, we sat down and started looking at the menu. No body introduced themselves or talked to us. We were seen looking at the menu and deciding what we wanted. My wife then went to the counter to order only to be told they were not serving food anymore and would be closing in 5 minutes. Why could they have not told us this when we walked in? There will still other people sitting in the cafe. There was a dry shortcake biscuit in the cabinet, that for some reason had three bits of chocolate perched on the top of it. They did sell us that one biscuit and made us a cup of tea and mint tea. When served they came in plastic/paper cups and the bill was over £5 for one piece of shortcake, a cheap plastic tasting cup of tea and mint tea. The quailty did not even live up to that of a road side burger van. We had sat at a table and not asked for them to go yet paper cup! The people on the next table had a teapot and real cups so it was not the norm! We decided to leave as we felt unwanted and one of the staff followed us to the door to lock it behind us.Poor Service to the extream, the toilets were disgusting and old and you had to pay to park just to get a cup of tea! When you visit big places or popular places you expect to be able to pay by card. Who carries enough cash around to buy lunch for two people. We had to settle for a (very small for the price) hot chocolate. Menu looked nice but can't comment on food. Decor was bright and pretty. Staff were quite flustered, we're trying to serve more than one person at a time through a small gap...

A gem in Shipley Country Park. Extensive menu, clean and welcoming. We had pasta bake with salad, and really enjoyed it, the salad was lovely with the usual selection but also, pineapple, kiwi, strawberry, orange and grapes as a garnish. Seating inside and outside make this a great place to stop whatever the weather.

We visited late in the after noon but there was still a few cakes on offer. The slices were a good portion and the large coffee not expensive and tasted very nice The service was very slow and took a long time as the young man was taking orders, making drinks and taking the money.

Went with friends for a walk around Shipley Park with our dogs and on our way back sat outside the Ramblers Coffee Shop . Excellent choice of teas and fancy coffees with a selection of salads, light lunches and cakes including some excellent homemade cherry scones with jam and clotted cream. Completely different shop to the one I used to visit with my kids circa 10 years ago. No wonder it was very busy. A very pleasant place to visit particularly inside.

Have visited this coffee shop on many occasions and it never fails to please. Staff are always courteous and polite despite being very busy at weekends and during school holidays. Even then wait times are very acceptable and it is certainly worth the wait. Scones to die for and that is after a very good value meal. Would particularly recommend the lasagne washed down with a milky coffee and you get a free refill too.Outside they have a covered area which is great if you have brought your 4 legged friend and several trails lead straight off into the park from the coffee shop so he or she is happy too.I will continue to visit on a regular basis whilst my legs allow me to walk. I hope this coffee shop continued success it certainly deserves it

Me and my family have always loved coming to the cafe and usually have no issues at all and normally it would be getting 5 stars. However, today we went in over a hour before the advertised closing time on the website and on the door to be told that they were no longer serving food. We had already paid for the parking and was very disappointed. I suggest that somewhere you should tell people before they make the trip to the cafe that they will not be able to have any food.

Shipley Country Park has a large variety of footpaths and tracks, ensuring that good walks are accessible all the year round. A Winter highlight is the snowdrop display in and around the beech wood, while one of the Spring and Summer highlights is the abundance of wildflowers - bluebells, buttercup meadows and orchids. An all-year-round highlight is Ramblers Café,situated next to the Visitor Centre. Its aim of " producing good food as fast as we can "ensures that all snacks and main courses are carefully prepared, appetizing and well presented. Scones have to be one of the cafe's masterpieces - they are enormous, delicious and amazing value,as is all of the cafe's food. You can even take one home in a box! Buy a large filter coffee to drink with your scone and you even get a free refill!A highly recommended little café.

Had started our walk wanting to have tea in the tea rooms which were closed despite it being a very busy bank holiday weekend, so were very much in need of something to eat when we got further around the park and came to this.It could do with better signposting on the paths in the park (had to rely on a map which was not that clear). Loved the Emma Bridgewater wallpaper and lovely curtains. Thought the menu was extensive, reasonably priced (cash only) and portions very generous. Staff were very young but friendly and willing. Will certainly go again.

Went with our little granddaughter to the park and found this lovely cafe for a drink and subsequently for lunch.Offered free refills for the coffee, always a bonus and no problem serving de-caffinated drinks. Good quality juices too. Lunch was a real surprise, an amazing salad beautifully presented. I have had ones half as good as this at expensive restaurants. Homemade quiche was delicious too. Everything fresh and tasty.

What a lovely coffee shop, brilliant food, friendly staff, reasonable prices. I regularly walk my dogs at Shipley park and nearly always stop off at ramblers coffee shop, there is an undercover area where you can sit with your dogs if it is raining. The food is cooked fresh, with lovely home baking every day. The scones are a must as they are baked fresh every day and are delicious - many different flavours I cannot recommend this place highly enough!

What an excellent cafe this is. If you stop for a coffee before your walk - try the scones - cheese or fruit - they are huge and delicious. If it's lunch, then the menu choices are excellent and very reasonalbe prices. I had jacket potato with turkey (2 slices), stuffing, cranberry sauce and salad with coleslaw. Wonderful value for £4.95. The atmosphere is welcoming and the cafe is very clean, also the service is very quick. This will now become a must for any walks in the area - we shall plan them to end at this cafe.

This is a great little cafe that serves good value food. We often walk in Shipley Country Park where this cafe is based in the visitors centre. We've often had a drink here or an ice cream in the summer. But this week we decided to have a meal as we didn't fancy cooking.I had the lasagne. there was plenty of it and great salad. Our waitress was friendly too.

The food, cakes and drinks they serve here are as good as you will find in the best of establishments... BUT!!!The speed of service, interaction and effective customer guidance and planning for when larger numbers isn't just bad - it does not exist... When I visited there was a local running race on and all of a sudden the place filled. That doesn't sound terrible, but when they can enter from two directions and there is no direction or guidance for a queue people start getting upset quickly - and yet the staff don't seem to care and seem to move at speed for which a snail would shame them. As I watched what was happening, I started to cringe and did what any sane person would do - jump in the car, drive two miles and go to a Costa Coffee and return to the event - and yet the still people were queuing :(It's certainly not like this at other times, but this day - I was shocked.

Stopped here today for lunch after a walk around Shipley Park. Lots to choose from on the menu. I had a turkey, stuffing and cranberry toasted sandwich and it was delicious. Lovely inside and it's nice sitting in the outside area in summer, it's a sun trap. The staff were friendly, and even though it was busy we still got served quickly. My son had a child's meal of ham sandwich with fries and pot of grapes, it came with more than grapes though, he had a lovely little selection of grapes, pineapple slice, strawberry and kiwi in the side. My only gripe with his meal is that you only get 2 quarter triangles of a sandwich, I understand it's a kids meal but even my son whose not a big eater said he was still hungry after finishing it. Worth dropping in if your visiting Shipley park.
