Have been coming here since it first opened as a takeaway in 1977. Pop in from time to time as it's my local Indian restaurant and has always been excellent. Went in last night with my daughter and had a fantastic meal at a reasonable price. Had a new dish on the menu, lamb, sag,dal and it was delicious and tender.

We visited this place on a Saturday night, they managed to book us in for 8pm when I rung at 7pm! (Last minute plans). So we were very grateful for that. The people who work there are lovely and so attentive, we got our drinks and poppadoms straight away. The food is lovely and they have halal chicken for my friend who is Muslim! It was another tables birthday and they brought over a cake with a candle, the atmosphere was lovely. At the end of the meal they give you a shot, they gave my friend a non-alcoholic shot and I thought that was incredibly thoughtful. I would definitely recommend visiting here for dinner!

Easily the best Indian restaurant in my opinion The food is always fantastic. Staff all very nice, We have never had a bad experience in this place. But if you plan to go on the weekend expect a long wait for your food. We normally go mid week but attended on a Friday night last week. it’s was very busy and we waited probably 1 hour 20 mins for the meal. But no complaints the food is well worth the wait.

My mum and I tried out this restaurant upon a recommendation from her friend. We were both hankering a curry and I have to say the food here was DELICIOUS! I ordered the chicken bhuna and I can categorically say that it was the BEST chicken bhuna I have ever tasted. Chicken cooked to perfection with a lovely thick sauce alongside a lovely peshwari naan and pulao rice. Really wonderful and attentive service. We spoke to the older gentleman who mentioned that the restaurant was established in 1977! We will definitely be returning customers. A huge thank you to the owner and all the staff!

Have ordered food from this restaurant for years and always really decent food. Had a takeaway tonight and it was very poor. Watery sauce on the chicken pasanda and was tasteless. Chicken Ceylon watery and tasteless. Everyone in our group always rated the food from this restaurant, but after tonight we would not risk ordering again. Maybe ownership has changed and standard with it?

We use to order from here every week, until one day they forgot the chicken shashlick and chicken samosas…. They said they will bring money round and put it through the letter box, they never did. The following week when we was ready to order again, they kept making excuses to give the money back , even said they’d bring the food that was missing but never. In the end my partner told them to forget about it! We lost £14 and they lost a loyal customer!

Extremely disappointed with our takeaway. There was no colour to our 3 mains dishes . No spice tasted . A bought jar of curry sauce would have tasted better. Good job they can make poppadoms and chutney. That's all I ate. The one star is for poppadoms. The chicken passanda was disgusting the colour was dirty grey it was just some blob of horrible tasteless sauce no cream no almonds with 4 small chunks of chicken. . If you want a Indian takeaway best come up to the North of England. At least they make authentic Indian food. Think the cooks need some cookery lessons. Rant over wasted £40

It sounds ridiculous to say that we haven’t been for a good few years, but with Covid and due to the fact that we live in Gidea Park and have four Asian restaurants within walking distance, we just haven't! But, after a shopping trip, and fancying a nice Indian meal out yesterday ................. on the way home we decided to stop at one of our old favourites; The Raj of India. And, how glad we are that we did. We were pretty early, but an hour later, the restaurant was getting very busy. Also, a true testament because regulars were coming in for collections – all in all, a very friendly service and obviously very popular. It was like stepping back in time! Oh, the menu – everything featured, like we use to have, when first eating Indian food, years and years ago – the good old-fashioned dishes! Of course, we started with the obligatory poppadoms, mint sauce, onion salad, chutney. But, a big dish of onion salad and a gravy boat filled with delicious mint sauce! I can’t eat spicy, so I’m not that adventurous, so decided to go for a lamb korma. The lamb was so tender and the sauce was rich and creamy. My husband went for a lamb dhansak, which again, was scrummy. Saag paneer was perfect and the brinjal bhajee was sliced (not in chunks), and not swimming in lots of oil – it really was tasty. To be honest, I could have quite easily have stuck to just the vegetable dishes. Everything really was scrumptious and we were laughing, reminiscing “just how it used to be!” Service was just perfect. And, to top it all, we were greeted by a gent who used to work in one of our local restaurants, what a lovely surprise that was – to see faces from old again – lovely! Top Marks to The Raj of India. We will be back soon. THANK YOU.

*** Update July 2022 *** We enjoyed a lovely family meal on a Friday night. We had booked the table 24-hours earlier, but the restaurant was still accepting walk-in customers during our meal. It was very busy, but the staff were very attentive and polite. The meal was lovely, full of taste and cooked fresh, to perfection. At no point did we feel rushed even though most tables were taken, we almost felt impolite requesting we pay the bill so we could leave. Still our favourite local Indian restaurant. Would recommend to anyone. We have a 4 Indian restaurants within 100m of each other, but the Raj of India is the best local Indian restaurant. I recently ordered a takeaway from The Raj of India, all I can say is that I was extremely disappointed. I ordered their vegetarian curry and motor ponir with veg biryani and chapatis- I can certainly confirm it was truely unpleasant and 'ponir' was awful - Paneer does not melt shredded or not, paneer remains firm. They use normal cheese and not authentic paneer. Food is not authentic and the quality is compromised - for them to call themselves an authentic Indian restaurant surprises me..! Well many westerners may enjoy their menu, it certainly does not cater well for customers who are familiar to authentic asian cuisine.

They took it back and brought back same dish toned down, but this time incredibly bland and tasteless. Others in our party had chicken tikka masala - very strange over sweet sauce, definitely wouldn’t recommend! Actually my dish - the King Prawn saag was very nice and I would recommend that! The banana fritters for dessert were yummy! Would I return? No, as there are too many other Indian restaurants to try in the area!

Starters arrived after 45 minutes wait when we arrived at 7.30pm and our main didn't turn up to 9.05pm, the food we got was poor standard, the chicken Madras was all watery due to them rushing in the kitchen with orders they couldn't cope with and the same for the Chicken Shaslick was not chargrilled at £9.50 a dish. Myself and my family came to the restaurant a few days ago. We are all vegetarians and opted for three variations of paneer curry, which were on the menu. We were given a curry with a square piece of melted cheddar cheese on top....definitely not paneer, as paneer doesnt melt. We know this as we cook with paneer frequently. I queried this with the waiter and he spoke to one of his colleagues, then came back to tell us that it was shredded paneer and 'this is how we do it here'. This is completely rediculous as we were mis sold a dish then lied to about the contents. I would not recommend as the meal was more than underwhelming and the curries were incredibly bland and full of oil.

the meat was very tough, the lamb dansak did not taste like lamb, it resembled pork.

Hands down the best Indian takeaway in Romford, and believe me I’ve tried them all. I can’t congratulate the chef enough, this is the one best Indian food I’ve ever had; extraordinarily delicious! “KORAI LAMB, LEMON RICE, CEYLON CHICKEN, BOMBAY ALOO, SAG PONIR, STUFFED NAN & ONION BHAKEE.

Not an Indian at all but pure Bengali food. If that’s what floats your boat. The presentation is great, but the food is worse than awful. Lamb biriyani was atrocious, chef needs to learn Indian or Pakistani biriyani, such a big difference. There was no flavour, bland with no taste of any spice. There needs to be at least a tiny bit of heat, but the waiter argued that it mustn’t, you don’t know. I don’t have a hot palate and review biriyanis. The lamb kadhai was overflowing with large chunks of onions and peppers instead of a thick gravy. I feel sorry for those unsuspecting locals. Never again.
