Railway Inn in Caerphilly

Delicious food, but an insultingly small portion, which was just about lukewarm. I didn't complain out of respect to my friend who had arranged the table as a treat for me. The waiting staff were fab, and the coffee was excellent. The first time I have left a restaurant feeling completely mugged off. Most certainly won't be going back.

Two meals were gammon, lovely chunky pieces but need horse's teeth to eat it. Two meals were cod they were OK. Another meal was hunters Chicken again ok and finally sausages and mash that was very good

Main meal fish and chips recived 2 small fish as no fish big enough poor cheap quality frozen chips. Onion rings cheap frozen type you get from asda, tesco etc but still charge £1.85 for 6. Garlic bread not the best no garlic flavour. But on the nice side waitress service excellent pub spotless

Arrived for our meal as booked. Sat for quite a while before a member of staff came to take out drinks orders. Service was slow coming out but two male servers (both French) were delightful. Extremely professional, friendly and couldn't do enough for you - unfortunately our service was sprinkled with your Staff Member Debbie, found her brash, rude and you felt like an inconvenience to her. We didn't even get a 'thank you' or a 'goodbye' when we left. We also saw her at the bar talking about other Restaurant goers. Food was nice enough but nothing special, Prawns in the Prawn Cocktail were pretty small, only three pieces for the Spring Rolls - and even they seemed smaller than usual. Chips in the main were oven and nothing exciting. Unfortunately we wouldn't go back.

Waitresses both nice and polite. Manager lacking in people skills and general service (mumbling to waitress instead of addressing issue with us) Coffee was the worst we have ever had. Basically hot longlife milk with a hint of coffee. Complained and waitress swiftly made another which unfortunately was no better. Food although basic came in matter of minutes and was reasonably priced. Could be so much better as the building is nice and plenty of parking . Won't be returning or recommending.

My party of eight was met with enthusiasm and warmth. The service was prompt as was the delivery of the food to the table. The food was well presented and cooked to a high level. The decor was fresh and clean as were the toilets. Congratulations. Keep up the positive approach.

Everything was OK not somewhere I would go for a special occasion but would come again if we were hungry and couldn't be bothered to cook. Nothing bad to say really I guess you get what you pay for

Went to the railway tonight fab food the lamb cutlets were to die for it came with veg potatoes and a stunning red wine sauce. My other half had ribeye steak chips delicious cooked to perfection. Thank you to the staff for the warm welcome. See you soon.😊😊😊

We were hungry for a good, big meal and not the usual places around where we live. So we decided to try the Railway again as we hadn’t been here for some time. The food was good, the portion sizes were decent, even the kids food was good. Service good and we didn’t have to wait too long for it to come out even though it was fairly busy and we hadn’t booked on a Saturday lunchtime. We definitely try them again! 👍🏻

What was once a decent Pub serving food has now morphed into a mediocre restaurant that serves drinks. If you are just popping in for a pint or 2 the staff try and pressurize you into having a meal.

What a meal. And I sometimes feel like I'm not easily pleased. We went for Sunday lunch. I had a prawn cocktail, mushroom Wellington and cheesecake, my partner had pate, 3 meat roast and couldn't manage a desert. I must say the food was very very good, the service was very attentive and ambiance chilled. Reasonable on cost Three very very small negatives (you can't please everyone with the first 'negative') the food arrived VERY fast. Again some love to get in and get out. I like a little while between courses but all good all the same. The second was my veg on the main were a little luke warm but the gravy was piping hot so all good. The third, I wasn't made aware of the specials board and would have ordered the fish if I'd have seen it. Great food, great service, very clean and a happy place. Will we return..... Definitely!!!

We were out all day driving came across this lovely pub and restaurant. The staff welcoming and comfy atmosphere. We ordered chicken skewers and sausage mash. Food was good And we were served within 5 minutes we wouid definitely return if we were in the area again.

Visited there twice lately. Very friendly and attentive service. Menu has a very good selection including Vegetarians. There's also a specials board.

We visited the Railway Saturday 13th July 4 of us . The welcome and atmosphere was very good . The menu is excellent choices on there we all had staters mains and desserts 4 empty plates each time speaks volumes especially has one of our party is so hard to please but the railway won him over . Will be back highly recommend . Thank you .

Been here a few times and never disappointed. They try new dishes , which usually work but general menu is quite varied and priced right. Service from the waiting staff is always friendly - look forward to the next visit.

Friendly staff, good service, nice and clean. Food not that good. For the money, poor. Cheep frozen chips, plastic ham. Could be so much better, with real chips and hand cut ham. The fish i had, was tasteless. Poor quality.

Went to the Railway Inn in Nelson, today for mothers day, it was our first time there, the staff were fantastic and the food was superb, the best steak both myself and my wife have had in a long time, I would say better than Miller and Carter, my two boys loved it, only negative was my desert, ordered a icecream sundae, the icecream was not the best, there is a local icecream maker near Machen, its called Happus, if they were to use a product like that, then the whole eating experience would be hard to beat in my opinion, we will be definitely returning there in the near future.

Food came out wrong! Was taken back into the kitchen. Pie was soggy with burnt meat on the edges. Vegetables were a scanty piece of cabbage & a few pieces of carrot. Potatoes were covered in roots. Totally unacceptable.£6.95 permeal total rip off. Never go again! Wouldn’t give it to a dog.

Have eat here several times, so no stranger to the pub and it's menu. Love the fact you can book your food in advance and save a wait, especially with little one around.

recent visit with my wife for evening meal . wonderfull service and meal was excellent. staff very helpfull, would recommend this place for a nice meal.

Visited recently for my daughters birthday having a previous good experience. However, this time was the total opposite. My daughter had the lasagne which had so much cheese on it was inedible. I had the full rack of ribs which not only being a tiny portion, were dry, lacking flavour and had hardly any sauce on them. Probably the worst ribs I've tasted. Unfortunately would not go back.

An excellent night at the Railway Nelson fab food, brilliant friendly staff, service was second to none. Will certainly go again

As a group of 9 we we asked to preorder our food by telephone prior to arrival. On the night when the food arrived there was only 8 meals. The waitress produced the list of meals ordered which totalled 8. Why would you book a table for 9 and order 8 meals. The mistake was not acknowledged. The 9th meal when it arrived had obviously been microwaved. Took an age to clear main course plates etc and ask if dessert was wanted. Then took an age to bring the bill and didn’t advise the need to go to bar to pay by card. Pub was very busy. More staff obviously needed.

I've avoided this place for years and went there recently with family. They had obviously recommended the place so we went along. I was shocked, to say the least, but in a very pleasant way. Myself and friends are going again tonight and I am very much looking forward to it - yeh. I don't believe it is especially good for young children but for adults and business, it is a great place to go. Go, you won't be disappointed.

You will not be disappointed with Railway Inn, comfortable, friendly staff,led with good food, and for my husband a pint of Welsh, we had a most enjoyable evening, totally relaxed, we had steak and ale pie with veg my son had lamb shank, he said it was the nicest he has ever tasted, I would advise to ring and book your seat.

Got to be honest I thought the quality of food was very poor for the price. It was more like the curry you get from a supermarket and to charge £10.95 for pasta with chicken with very little chicken was a rip off there are a lot better pubs than this I'm sorry to say

We went out for a family meal atmosphere was good staff were friendly we had chicken tikka masala and cheese board it was fab!

Best fillet steak cooked to perfection. With all the trimmings Amazing helpfull staff . Spotlessly clean. 5 star

We ordered belly pork and venison medallions. Accompaniments really good but for the price expected thicker medallions and crispy belly pork. However the deco is lovely and fresh and the service excellent.

Went here for a family birthday. Child friendly. Very friendly staff, good service. Food was hot. The chicken coujons were lovely, and the lamb was very good. Much improved from the last time I came here. Would definitely come again.

Visited with family, large party and staff coped very well. It was a busy Thursday evening and all meals arrived together, all hot, all good quality. Lasagne in particular went down well, good portion sizes and good value for money. Excellent real ales, staff fastidious in cleaning of the bar area, a good sign always. I would return and maybe not drive to make the most of those real ales, only five to drive,!!!

Just visited the railway inn, nelson for a spot of lunch with the wife, i have to say the service was second to none and the food was amazing, the wife had the fillet steak and i had the mixed grill and both were spot on, highly recommend this place

The staff, service and decor was lovely for a small valleys pub, but why the cheep frozen chips?? Totally spoiled the meal for me, so easy to fry off some quality home made chips. I would not rush back I’m afraid to say.

Had lunch there today. My pork with mash was delicious, not a huge platefull though. My wife's curry was nothing special, asked for rice but received rice/chips. Taste was very ordinary, expected a little more special for the price, the sort of curry that you could easily make at home & tasted no different. The poppadom was poor as it was rather elastic in the middle. Coke was rather flat/tasteless. However staff were polite, beer was good & service good too. Comfortable & warm. 2 mains & 2 drinks came to just over £25, not the best value to be had perhaps. We will visit again though, need to gibve the place a chance to redeem itself.

Recently called in for a drink on our way home. This establishment as recently been refurbished, giving a warm atmosphere. Staff very friendly and professional. Food looked very tempting, will definitely call again and try a meal. Great size car park - plenty of room

Called in last week as my review shows and was well impressed . Tonight had a business colleague / good friend in the office so we thought lets go and eat .Found our selves at the Railway , He has not eaten here before however i had told him about my previous meal 48 hrs ago so he was looking forward to it .Well they certainly came up trumps , Sunday lunch special menu , I had Pork he had beef and my son in law also had pork , top class all round piping hot which is rare in most places , plate was amply full , lots of meat , lovely gravy , not transparent like most places .We all enjoyed thoroughly .Then it came to desert , the three of us fought 3 sticky toffee puddings with ice cream , I had cream as well ..watching my figure , lol ...This is my new place to eat , totally recommend it to all , the staff again were brilliant , new barman tonight and he was brilliant , Waitress was superb , could not look after us any more than she did ... Summary ...best place i have eaten for a very long time , check out my reviews ..I love my food , and this place is 100 % top class ..Keep up the great service and food , see you again soon .

Had a well deserved catch up with a friend. This newly renovated place is on the commute route of us both, so decided to stop here after hearing many good tales of the place.

We went to the Railway Inn for lunch after it was recommended. I have to say that I have not been there in some time but was not disappointed. The pub has been refurbished, and is very nice. The menu was varied and the food we had was very good. The staff were friendly and efficient. I had half a rack of ribs and my husband had a mixed grill and both meals were very good and good value for money. The staff brought your drinks to the table, and you did not have to wait for anything. I would recommend to anyone and will be returning soon.

Have not been here for a while. It has been refurbished to a high standard. The staff were very attentive but the meal stole the show. I had the Steak pie which was delicious, will be going again, very soon.

Just got back from lunch with friends. I had the Pork Medallions. One of the best meals I have had in a long time. Some of the party had mushroom soup, chicken stuffed with bacon, leeks and something else - again all delicious. Desserts - sticky toffee pudding, apple tart and rhubarb crumble - again lovely.Decor of the pub was very welcoming and relaxing. Toilets clean and beautifully decorated.The staff made us feel welcome from arrival to departure. All in all a wonderful afternoon.Will definitely be visiting again soon.Thank you.

Last minute decision to go out for food and thought let's try the recently transformed Railway Inn, we was welcomed and seated straight away and looked over our menus including children's menu for our granddaughter, The waiter brought over a colouring pencils and a picture for her to colour in while we waited for our food, sausage and chips for my granddaughter and curry of the day for my partner and the railway gammon for me .... good job I was hungry too as it was filling.... we all had lovely meals, the seating area is nicely decorated and comfortable, the staff are friendly and efficient. They have a play area for the children and benched seating for the adults but plastic glasses and no food out there, out the front of the Inn is seating and yes use normal glasses, decent size car park which does fill up on busy times especially weekends, I pass it regularly on the week and thought it's very busy so must be good and it is.Will be returning for sure 'just great' for friends and family or just a pint

Decided on this place to have food last minute hadn't booked didn't know it had been taken over by new people.Walked through door and was greeted by the manager what a very warm welcome the place was quite full.We had table service by Yvette who made our time there so enjoyable she couldn't do enough for us .I had sea bass on risotto mark had gammon recommended by Yvette both meals were fantastic.What a fab experience all round we will definitely be going back soon and telling all our friends and families.Special thankyou to Yvette and all the staff amazing .Deb and mark

This pub has recently been refurbished and turn into a restaurant. Nicely set back from the main road, it is very attractive and welcoming. Have been there a few times and the food is good and well presented. Good range of local ales at the bar is refreshing to see. Staff there were very friendly and helpful. Fewer drinkers than there once were, but it’s good for families, with a pleasant garden area for sitting. They deserve to succeed with it.

As soon as I walked in you can see it's very clean. The staff are trained well and speak politely. The meal was cooked fresh. Cod and chips the tartar sauce was home made it was all delicious. Manager Christian came to check if everything was to our liking. Nothing to much trouble. Very impressed with the whole visit. Will definitely be back again.

We called in lunchtime for a quick stop.The staff were very welcoming and looked professional in smart uniforms.I understand that the place has just been refurbished and the decor was very nice. Menus weren't very clean. I had the pulled pork shoulder sandwich with salad and chips. The quality of the meat seemed awful - it was pale and full of solid fatty pieces. My friend's food was fine but my sandwich was a letdown and more or less inedible. It was only a very quick visit so I just paid up and left as time was very limited and so didn't complain. Doubt we'll return again.

Slow service when wasn't particularly busy. Food wasn't that nice ..both myself and my grandaughter had chicken and it was so dry it was difficult to swallow. The chips were soggy like they had been cooked before n just warmed up. Quite a disappointing meal!

Just come home after a lovely nite out in the railway pub Nelson our meal was lovely and waited only 10 minutes staff wonderful and helpful couldn't do enough for you don't know where all these bad comments are coming from it's not fair when people work so hard to make your nite pleasant

Been there twice in last week once for lunch and the other with friends. Had steak salad for lunch it was small and not worth the money albeit it was big enough for a late lunchWent there on a Friday evening with friends having booked a table for 7. The pub was full to be fair and there appeared to be lots of staff but service was dire. Waited an hour and half for food to arrive and when it did the jacket potato was not cooked and they missed the pepper sauce which never did show up. Mentioned to the staff and got a "sorry about that" as he walked off with the dishes.New paint and money clearly spent but little point if they can't get the basics right.Wont rush back!

Attended as a large family party and initial impressions were good. The pub has a much airier atmosphere than before and the staff were really friendly. However the meals were across the board very very poor. I could have stayed at home for poorly cooked oven chips, and as I was feeling hungry thought I'd try the mixed grill. This was a bad choice as the meat cuts were of really poor quality as were the sausages. Most of the party actually had big gripes about the quality of their food - whilst the gammon looked appealing it turned out to be very tough. Gave a really poor overall first impression of attending this pub after the refurb. I only hope the quality can improve in order that the pub can sustain its business and repay on the investment. On this performance I'll be heading elsewhere on a local night out.

Tried out Railway Inn. Was really disappointed. As a main meal the portion size of the steak salad was minimal and could have passed for a starter! At the extortionate price of £11.95!Will not be returning!!!

Had a lovely meal today at the newly refurbished pub. Great atmosphere and the refurb is so nice. I had the curry of the day which came with Nann bread, popodum and mango chutney for £8.95 and it was delicious. Definitely returning.

As we arrived an elderly gent stood by bar told us its £3.80 a pint for this cider im drinkin!! NO BARSTAFF IN SIGHT. 10 minutes later a young girl appeared we stated we been waiting 10 mins she grinned!! We ordered 2 ribeye medium cooked and 2 pints of coke! Well wot can I say the cow that the steak cum off wouldn't of been able 2 chew mine it woz dreadful! Both woz definitely not ribeye and not cooked medium. As we went 2 pay when leaving we complained and the young girl said I tell the chef. We thought she would of gone to get him but no just said sorry. Will definitely not be returning there! I just wish we had left when my partner said 9 minutes after waiting by the bar when we got there.

My partner and I visited one weekday lunchtime and ordered off the 2 meals for £10. We had the chilli con carne with rice and chips and chicken curry rice and chips. The chips were home cooked but very oily and soft. The chilli was tasteless and the curry like the Chinese powdered stuff you can buy in Home Bargains! But I suppose you get what you pay for! The service was friendly but the bar area is in desperate need of a facelift!

Visited for lunch after reading trip advisor reviews.Looks as this pub is on its way up. New'ish owner is trying his damness to make this place work.Deco seems as it is a work in progress although this shouldn't distract you from visiting.Staff were pleasant and friendly.Food, plentiful and enjoyable. The 'but' in the review title is in regards to the steak I had served to me. Although cooked as ordered and tasty, it had a lot of fat on the edges. This fat was greasy, stringy and did not, and was not, appetising to look at. I feel if kitchen staff took a little time and removed such fats the steak would appear more appetising.Overall, I wish this venue the best but would reiterate spend a little time in food presentation. I'll be back as the price of meals is very good.

What a great pub, the food here was second to non and well priced too! The staff were great and very helpful even offering to help Google some information on accommodation in the area, how is that for service.I need to go back and try the 32oz steak, phwaaaaar!

Its been a while since I ate here due to health reasons.To be perfectly honest I was a little disappointed. Not by the foodbut the service. To say it was abysmal would be to kind. Kids running around nobody behind the bar etc;etc.Having read the reviews I am a little tempted to try it again.(despite the NEW? Landlords protestations). So lets hopethings have improved to the extent he claims. I know this pub well(I used to workin it) and I have nearly 40 years experience in the trade as licensee and cookso I can,in part, sympathies with his situation. It is a very demanding and unsympathetic trade and one that doesn't suit most people. Ill comment again when Ive visited. HopeJames is still the cook! T

Oh dear millyholidays that doesn't sound right at all ! i was here yesterday visiting family so they took us to the railway 6 of us an two children. wow the service was so quick (food in under 20mins) the staff where so pleasant and helpful and food mmmm melt in the mouth, would totally recommend the railway inn to anyone. I cant wait to return over the half term! And thank you to the management nothing was to much trouble .”

Came here this evening for a meal after work. Arrived at 5.30 and ordered shortly after. Waited over an hour for the meals to arrive (asked twice in that time if we'd been forgotten as tables that arrived after us had eaten and left.) were reassured by bar staff that our order was on its way. Eventually asked to speak to a manager who basically said we were lying about how long we had waited and then said that we hadn't ordered at all! We asked for a refund and left. It seemed like other tables had had trouble with incorrect orders / missed items. Seems very disorganised and staff could do with some training (especially the manager!). Avoid this pub! There are plenty of other local pubs which are much better.

Service was good nice friendly atmosphere and possibly the best mixed grill I've ever had. Everything about the evening was positive we will definitely go back would also recommend to friends and family.

Went here with a couple of my friends and I have to say after reading the reviews I'm quite shocked , the service was fast the food was lovely and huge servings would definitely go back !! The new owners have changed the place for the better looking forward to revisiting in the summer with my children

I ordered a 10oz sirloin steak and jacket potato the steak was cold and I have had a thicker rash on of bacon before the potato was dry not offered any butter for it. I couldn't eat the steak and when I told the waitress I couldn't eat it she just said sorry to hear that and took our money not even offered any meal to replace it. poor won't be back again

After an hour wait with a table full of people who come after us already had their food, I asked when was our food going to arrive? Was told they were plating it now. 20 minutes later still no food to which our family of 5 decided to leave. Dreadful service wouldn't recommend to anyone.

Went for a meal today as i'd been a year or so ago and the food was good. Food was ok today, but the Service was awful, waited an Hour and 45 mins for food. Other couples complaining to us too about the wait. I would never visit the pub again. There were children running in and out of the kitchen while we were there too. Wish I had read the reviews on here before we went today as I wouldn't have bothered eating there.

Visited the railway inn today, I must say I read the reviews on here and could not disagree more. The food was fantastic and I only waited 15 mins before it was brought out. It was a lovely family pub where my kids were welcomed with open arms. I will defiantly be returning to sample some of the best pub food I've had for a while.

We visited for a meal at around eight, waited a little long for food, the pub seemed to be full of the owners kids, there must have been six. They weren,t poorly behaved, just in and out of the bar area, they had access to every part including the kitchen. I could not be sure if the staff were in fact the new owners, there was a dark haired lady serving behind the bar, a blonde "lady" and two men who were presumably the partners of the two women. They were not visitors to the pub, they were definitley connected to the running of it in some way. We sat directly opposite the bar area where they were all stood, so heard the lewd conversation and filthy language. I am certainly not a prude but the conversation was disgusting, the four of them laughed loudly, made extremely rude vulgar comments of a sexual nature and swore the whole time we were there. The fact that there were children nearby and paying customers did not deter them one bit! Their behaviour ruined my meal as I was forced to listen to their filth. My husband was equally appalled but is very much "don,t make a scene" so we eat our food when it eventually arrived, eat it rapidly and left. I will not be returning to the railway as long as these "staff" are there.

Been a regular here for a few year. No one seems to stay long.Our group waited over an hour for the special which was a roast but with roasties lol so basically meat and veg. In fairness was nice when arrived desserts rubbish to be honest didn't have laf the menu overpriced for pub grub.This place has potential cut prices go back to basics a simple cheap menu that can be fulfilled. Service was awful no one came to collect any plates ended up dumping plates on next table where they remained until closing!

My husband and I called into this pub looking to have a coffee before the school run.When we walked in the whole pub smelt of cooking.We ordered two lattes, but the machine had run out of milk so they were dark black the girl behind the bar said she would get some milk, which came out in a little jug freezing cold. We sent the coffees back and had a J2O and half a cider. The J2O came in a dirty pint glass?The tables were sticky and as you can see from the photo the menu was dirty and sticky also.Couldn't wait to drink up and get out of there.Avoid this place like the plague!

Went here week before Christmas with my family...Firstly new owners yet again !Asked for a gin and tonic none available asked for a vodka and coke none available. No wine and nothing on draught ! A pub with no alcohol and its a week before Christmas !! Landlord said it was the first day of opening and the delivery hadnt turned up.who opens a pub with no alcohol ??If that was the case surely you wouldn't open till everything was in . anyway ordered food waited an hour and 10 mins bare im mind there was 5 people in the whole of the pub..food finally arrived chicken was microwaved and was grey..a family member found metal in her food !! There were children in and out of the kitchen area flicking their long hair all over the cooking area one child had dirty clothes on .it was by far the worst meal we had ever eaten.the meals came to around 30 pound which you don't mind paying it was edible.they said theyd charge us 15 pound which was a cheek we shouldnt of been charged at all.il never eat in the railway for as long as I live.No doubt new owners will take over soon yet again the pub is doomed.NEVER EAT THERE PEOPLE !!

Sat there 10 mins staff said dont serve food till 6pm wa a joke wint go there again no.point eating if no food till 6pm food should be served all day staff need proper training

Me and my family came here yesterday to have an evening meal, it was absolutely lovely, my jacket potato was really fluffy and my meat was cooked beautifully, also the food comes at a good price and there is a good selection to choose from, the staff in this establishment were very welcoming and friendly which is always nice to see when you go out for food. We will be coming again!

Went a few weeks ago with my friends ordered a mix grill have to say I was sooo disappointed... My steak an gammon was tiny (size of a 50p coin) had bacon for pork chop did complain an fair dos they sent me a new bit of gammon an Tha tasted lush. But id paid for a mix grill not gammon an chips chips where lovely

As of august 2014 the railway is under new management the food is amazing locally sourced and home cooked the pub is clean and the staff are friendly it is now a very family restaurant

Friendly staff,good food and value for money.had the mixed grill and have to say food was good,well presented and plenty of it.will definitely go again but take a doggy bag.

Nice local pub with food available but had some issues there last week. Seems the previous landlord left rather quickly and a host had to step in temporarily so please read this review on the basis that the people running it will likely change soon so could improve.There was only 1 very busy young lady seemingly trying got fo everything but the cooking, she was a nice well mannered young lday when 4 of us visited for a frink & a meal.Beer & lager not much choice but both fine re taste.Great choice on the menu.Problems though because our young lady was so rushed. Starters were delicious, chicken goujons and garlic/cheese sauce on mushrooms particularly delicious. However main courses arrived before we'd all finished our starters without real apology and any offering to return later. The steaks were also delicious on the whole and plenty on the plates however a requested 'well done' steak simply wasn't and had to be returned as undercooked.So the place really gets 4 *s for the meal but only 2 *s for the service unfortunately, an average of 3 *s
