Excellent restaurant with very friendly service, the furniture is wonderfully old and comfortable, we ate in the Bar area and the food was great, and the prices were very reasonable. Not to be missed if you are in the area.

I have been here several times and they have now thinned out the menu, much to my dismay. I guess if it doesn't work, then don't offer it. The food is okay, but not brilliant. However, if you're hungry and need feeding, then this did the job.

my experience in eating here is that they can not cope, be prepared to wait at least an hour before you get your starter and again another hour before you get your main meal. it was nice waiting and having a chat to everyone but we were begining to run out of conversation and the children were fed up of waiting so long, food was not as good as i had heard it was and was not worth the wait

Went here again in November after a poor experience in July 2016. This visit was totally different. Portion sizes were good, the menu was varied, with two items of game, the staff were friendly and efficient and the prices were in keeping with other pub/restaurants of this type. Altogether, a very enjoyable experience. We'll be visiting again soon!

Living nearby I have eaten at this pub/restaurant numerous times. The food served up is consistently very good and offers variety as well as an option to dine casually in the bar or more formally in the restaurant. A snug atmospheric premises that is a great example of a country eating house.

This is a do -it-yourself venue, which suited us. The location is amazing and the room was laid out as we had asked. The staff were friendly but it would have been nice to not see the staff dressed in jeans serving our Wedding Breakfast. The lady in charge on the day was brilliant, couldn't have been more helpful. The food was served hot and was delicious, no one in our party complained about the food. Due to us arriving late at the reception the Wedding Breakfast was delayed by 1 hour but this did not impact on the quality of the food. Our Wedding Party booked out 8 of the rooms, again there was no complaints but none of the rooms have walk in showers which was an issue for a couple of our guests due to movement disabilities. We cleared up our belonging on the Sunday morning. My Mum and I were shocked and upset when we were told that the flower decorations and the rest of our Wedding cake that was not eaten (even though we had taken a box to put it in) had been thrown away. Bearing in mind my Mum made the cake and all the decorations. On speaking to Paul, the owner, the excuse given was 'most of the decorations are naff so we don't keep them'. We do not think this is acceptable, so be warned if you wish to keep anything from the wedding make sure it is written down in the paperwork completed 3 weeks before your wedding date. Apart from this 'fly in the ointment', are experience and our Wedding Reception were amazing. The people from our Wedding who stayed over all met for Breakfast and the breakfast was lovely.

I received a gift of afternoon tea for two with champagne at the Queens Head so this is based on the experience without knowing the cost. The Queens Head is in a lovely location with grounds leading to the river and lots of outside seating. The pub has an old village pub feel but a varied mix of decor. The area we were in would benefit with a good clean of the fixtures and some of the worn features replacing. The afternoon tea was disappointing given the good reviews the restaurant had received. The sandwiches were very average with little taste and my daughter thought the cakes looked like a selection sold in Iceland. I cannot say for certain but my feeling was we were served prosecco rather than champagne. They serve afternoon tea from 2pm so the pub was almost empty on a Friday which didn't help create an atmosphere. We were alone in our area and there was 1 or 2 other couples in the pub. That didn't improve the service however as I had to go and find someone to ask for the 'champagne'. The food was served very pleasantly and we were offered generous tea refills I didn't raise any of this with the Queens Head due to a mixture of disappointment and my daughter didn't want me to.

Just came from the dinner, which was just amazing, I am used to best restaurants in London, so when I had a journey to Peterborough I was looking for something nice. As there were no pictures of food, I didn't know what to expect. Chicken liver parfait was amazing and huge portion, lamb perfectly cooked and the bill for 3 courses, 2 sides and a drink was 30,-,which was huge value, as in London you pay three times more. Definitely worth it, lovely service too!!

I always think it's strange when you have to order all your side dishes separately but you can't just eat a steak! Ordered 3 sides but the portions are tiny and not worth £2 each! Gave us bread but no side plates so had to butter it on my napkin..... Steak was very nice though and service friendly

We arrived a little early & ordered drinks & settled down in the cosy bar. My son arrived & our dinner order was taken as soon as we had chosen from the colourful menu. We were taken through to our table which was nicely set. We didn't have to wait long for our food to arrive. All the food was presented nicely , although the roast potatoes were hidden under my beef. The veg was a little disappointing, peas, carrots & cauliflower cheese which was a bit runny although cooked correctly. My beef was nice & the other meals were acceptable. The only criticism was the food wasn't very hot. The plates were cold & the gravy luke warm. Also the cruet was empty. Our dessert order was taken & arrived promptly. The trifle we ordered was nice, but had too much cream for our liking. The sticky toffee pudding was nice, but the toffee sauce a little over cooked.

Not up to very good in my opinion on the rating but getting close Went with friends on a Tuesday in October when they had a two for one offer on the main meals Each couple had steak for two which came on a platter to share - which came with chips and salad - tasty quality meat - I think the full price for the dish which works out at £48 for two is a bit steep but obviously the offer made it value for money The South African waiter was excellent and engaging We were the only people in that part of the restaurant which surprised me , although there were some people in the bar Would go back but probably when there's an offer on; particularly if just for a meal out midweek

We viewed this venue as we really had our hearts set on having our wedding here. We met with the wedding coordinator Alicia and agreed on dates and other wedding details. We were asked to email our requirements in order to get a quotation for the cost of our big day. The email was completely ignored. After two weeks of hearing nothing we emailed again as we didn't know if the email had got lost in the system or something....still nothing. My partner then called and spoke to Alicia who was very blunt and rude to him on the telephone, asking him to put his questions in an email yet again, he sent another email and still no response. I thought I'd write this review to inform people to proceed with caution when looking at The Queens Head in Nassington for your Wedding Day, in my opinion if the wedding coordinator cannot respond to an initial email requesting information how will you feel when no response is made to you when you are trying to sort out the fine details of your special day.

Booked a table for a leaving party - 5 people. I had duck as did two others in the party, the rest had chicken which was decidedly average. The duck was a pitiful portion, four small thin slices, over cooked, allegedly served with mashed potato that was more a puree. None of the meals came with vegetables (well unless a few tiny cubes of parsnip could be construed as vegetables). We had to ask for vegetables and eventually two small bowls of anaemic looking vegetables arrived.I have visited for lunch on several occasions and on too many occasions had sandwiches with stale bread, barely any filling but was hoping that my confidence would be restored following the evening meal. Not a chance. I will not be returning.

We were looking for a good local restaurant that did a good steak, for my husbands birthday meal. We have been to many locally and they have all disappointed. Having read the mixed reviews we were a bit wary of going for a lunchtime meal, I had booked the restaurant two days before and mentioned that I had a Gourmet Card which they take (this gives you up to 25% off the meal). We were the only ones to start with in the main restaurant and there seemed to be only one young waitress on duty.We ordered Angus prime rib beef steaks to our taste with some accompaniments, although the waitress was serving all on her own and other people quickly came into the restaurant nothing was too much trouble for her. You get little brown and white loaves to start they were a little dry but no problem. Service was quick and efficient and the steaks were cooked perfectly with the chargrilled steak flavour, we had the mixed vegetables each and a mushroom sauce, you can have hand battered chips or small fries we had one of each. They also do a range of specials which include pigeon pie, if you like that sort of dish, and a burger which was very large and thick cut sandwiches. My husband who loves his steaks commented it was one of the best steaks he had eaten in the UK we have had Alberta and Montana steaks. It is not cheap for the steaks but with the added bonus of the Gourmet card this will become one of our favourite restaurants, could not fault the service or meal and would thoroughly recommend.

A much desired bank holiday lunch turned into a sheer disappointment for each member of our family. Everything was delayed from our first drinks order through to dessert. We were in the restaurant for 3 hours! At least an hour more than expected. There was an apparent 'incident' in the kitchen that caused the delay - although no further explanation was offered. We were one of approx 5 sets of diners in the restaurant, probably less than a fifth of capacity?! When our main course finally arrived the lamb tasted like a tough piece of leather with a chewy centre. Other courses were 'okay'. I asked the waiter to pass on my experience to the chef and was rewarded with a complete lack of response. When the bill arrived and the waitress (waiter must have gone home to take a paracetamol) asked if everything was alright.....I enlightened her with our poor experience and this was met with the complete lack of authority and nervous laughter that I would expect from a teenager. There was no offer of a resolve, and no apology. Now just to clarify my point, I am not wishing to give the waiting staff a bad rap here, more so the management.....or lack of. They must have been having their lunch at our local village pub (The Wicked Witch). We very politely paid the full amount on the bill and departed. We won't be going back.

We were considering booking the Queen's Head for a function and so reserved a table to visit before doing so to try out the food and have a look at the venue.I can see why this is a favourite for those who like the country village feel as the bar certainly looks the part and is very appealing, unfortunately this comes with small tables where those with long legs will end up banging their knees. Our table hadn't been reserved, but fortunately it wasn't that busy (just 2 families and a bride getting ready for her wedding). We ordered the Angus Burger, Steak sandwich and children's fish fingers from the bar menu. After half an hour my daughter's starter was delivered at the same time as the main course, the bun for the burger was burnt, the steak was flavourless and the children's fish fingers was larger than the two adult meals, not fish fingers (small battered cod instead) and came with undercooked peas (despite my daughter asking for no peas). As the bill for all that and a few drinks came to £50 we were not particularly impressed. However the staff were polite and did offer to get us something else, so I can only hope that the main chef was too busy cooking the food for the wedding and the bar meals were being done by someone else.

We recently met up with family who live in Essex - we drove down from Lincoln. We ate here before Christmas but had not tried their a la carte menu. There was a 25% off voucher which proved excellent value. Staff were cheerful, helpful and friendly providing very good service. It was pleasing to see unusual items on the menu - the pig's head starter with black pudding was succulent and tasty and my main of hare wellington was tender and gamey. This fare was well above the usual pub standard. We recently ate at Hambleton Hall in Rutland (one Michelin star) and the Queen's Head's food definitely bears comparison in flavour and presentation. We liked how bread was served with the promise of more if required. Many restaurants are stingy in this respect. Prosecco at £3.85 a glass was excellent and the real ales fresh. We thoroughly recommend this restaurant.

Have eaten here twice in the past two weeks. The first occasion was as a group of four in the front restaurant and the food was brilliant. Some very different menu choices such as pigs head and hare. All cooked very well and very tasty. On the second occasion we hadn't booked as we were due to eat elsewhere but due to issues at another venue we left and dropped into the Queens Head to see if they could fit us in. Despite being fully booked they managed to fit us in serving very very tasty food in a reasonable time. The didn't just fit us in a make us wait, the service was very good as was the food.If you like game or just good tasty food I would highly recommend you eat here

After reading recent posts, we were very disappointed with our visit for a Tuesday lunch. Admittedly it was the lunch special for £12.50 but my soufflé didn't look as if it had seen egg whites and the rosti was very thin and burnt so not a great meal. I wouldn't like to have paid full price! We were the only ones in the restaurant so maybe a slack day and a relief chef. I hope so! Not sure we will risk going again.

We went to The Queens Head this evening for our evening meal. Very quiet in the restaurant next to the bar as there was a wedding in the conservatory. Enjoyable evening, food was small portions, but satisfying, could not manage a dessert. Had starter and mains. Very tasty. Twice baked soufflé for starters and then lamb for main. Could be considered pricey as £68 with drinks included, however you get what you pay for. To me it was worth it, as the interior is decorated nicely, food nicely presented and tasty and service excellent.

I have to agree and summarise what everyone has said, food is unbelievably overpriced and very very small, we left joking about having a take away, which i could have eaten. Most things fill me up,I'm a size 8 small female but this meal was so tiny I think my small children would ask for more.Meal cost us with drinks over £80.00 between me and my husband , too expensive. I've had cheaper meals in the center of London and the quality was better and the portion size was filling.

Booked in for Sunday lunch yesterday, was greeted ok and seated no problem, ordered 3 roast dinners, one beef, one pork, one lamb. The lamb was very greasy, the beef had a big bit of gristle in the middle, I had the pork which consisted of two thin slithers of meat one of which look like it had been grilled, we all had very black roast potatoes, surely any decent chef would not have even considered serving those? There was a lack of gravy and I had to ask for my apple sauce, not great! Considering closer to home we could have got two roasts for £10 we were pretty miffed at parting with £55, definitely wont be rushing back or recommending! Not good value for money at all !! Taken here as a special treat for wife's birthday. Some interesting things on the menu: not a huge selection but enough. Nice selection of real ales in bar, then called through to restaurant when meal ready. Some confusion in the kitchen resulted in an extra main dish which the three of us shared as a starter while we awaited the correct main course for one of us! The staff were aware and we did not have to tell them of the issue: they sorted it out in that way.We were moved to an outside table for the second course when the restaurant became too noisy for those of us with hearing aids to cope with conversation - we could have gone to the bar but as it was a fine summer evening we chose to be outside. All the food was excellent, and the service good when it was good. The noise was a pity: maybe more soft furnishings would be a good idea.

After looking at the menu when we had gone for a drink the week before and hearing such good reviews, we decided to book a table, as it was a Monday lunchtime we knew it would probably be quiet which suited us, we were the only ones in the restaurant!!! We ordered our food and shortly after were given a bread roll which was warm and very tasty, our main course arrived, my husband had a fillet steak which he really enjoyed, my lamb was another story, it was ok on the outside and full of taste but nearer to the middle it was raw, I like my lamb pink but this was un edible, the accompaniments were very tasty though even though there wasn't much of them! The service was very slow even though there were two staff on and the place was empty, we were never offered any condiments with our meals i.e mustard and when I said my lamb was raw to the waiter said ok and walked off, the waitress did come and take our plates and I told her about the lamb for which she replied that she already knew and would speak with the chef about this, admittedly it was taken off the bill, we ordered desserts as we were still hungry, my husband had sticky toffee pudding which was delicious and I ordered the cheese board, when it arrived my first thought was this was never worth £7.50, there were 4 biscuits (all the same sort) some mouldy grapes and cheese quality was very poor, there was also no celery as advertised on the menu! We have travelled all over the world and maybe we are spoilt but we thought we would try a local establishment out as there have been mixed reviews, but how disappointed was I, I came away feeling hungry and a lot worse off cash wise!!

We went to the Queens Head Inn to celebrate our daughter's birthday, we had read a good review in the local paper and our daughter was looking at it as a wedding venue for next year so we thought we'd try it out.Let's start with the good points! The view... well you couldn't ask for a better location, we had a walk through the beer garden and thought how lovely the wedding pictures would look, it was really quite unique for the Peterborough area. The accommodation looked good from the outside. One of the starters was the scallops and it was mouth-wateringly good! (Very pricey at £8.50 for 3 though)3 of the party had the Ribeye and it was cooked perfectly and was extremely tasty. There was well kept real ale which was such a pleasure to drink! Now onto the bad points and I am sorry to say there is quite a few! Firstly there was the lack of choice when it came to bottled drinks (apparently the staff were unaware of the difference between cider and lager)3 of the party had the chicken trio which had been reviewed to have been mouth-watering; this was absolutely tasteless. The oyster chicken was overcooked, the terrine was bland and the chicken itself was far too chewy! The lamb main was extremely tough and hard to cut, I had to use one of the steak knives as the normal knife just wasn't doing anything. The jus was OK but extremely overpowering. Our daughter ordered the Mango and Rhubarb sorbet which lacked flavour and at £5.95 was a complete waste of money. My husband ordered a liquor coffee to come out with the desserts; this arrived at least 10 minutes after we'd finished the desserts (25 minutes from when it was ordered). The coffee was luke warm, the cream had just been poured in and was sinking to the bottom. After we had paid the bill we spoke to the waitress about the coffee (we didn't want the staff to think we were complaining to get some freebies) She apologised and went straight over to the Manager to tell him, he then came immediately over to the table, gave us the change said thank you and walked off. We didn't want anything for free but an apology would have been nice. Overall the service was poor - we tried to make conversation with 2 members of staff but quite frankly they weren't interested and tried to get away as quickly as possible. They weren't informative about the menu and had to twice go and ask when we asked questions about certain dishes; even the Manager wasn't sure. Overall we weren't impressed and won't be going back again.

We went to the Queen's Head with our dining club, sixteen of us on this occasion. To cut to the chase, there was more grumbling about this restaurant than there had been in any of the 12 or so we had visited previously. We paid £25 per head and each of us pre-selected from a set meal menu they had circulated to us. Despite this it took 45 mins for the starters to arrive. We had to chase for the bread which we were told was "being heated"! There was no visit from a maitre d' - if they had one - no apology and no sense of crisis. Once the starter had arrived the courses arrived at slow but just about acceptable intervals.I'm afraid I concur with previous reviewers. The portions were bizarrely sparse: the vegetables were just slivers. Potatoes were two tiny pieces. Cheesecake two tiny squares...and so it went on. A masterpiece of style over substance. The dishes themselves were, to say the least, quite adventurous for a village pub/restaurant. I, for example, has shin of venison made into a kind of cake and in a cinammon sauce. It was ok if a bit odd, but without any reasonable amount of vegetables it was completely unsatisfying. That dish was not finished by two of our members....and so it went on. I make an exception for the hake which seemed to be enjoyed by all who had it. There's the clue: it was relatively simple! The standard of cooking seemed just fine - the issues are with the dishes and the portions. So I believe their ambition outruns their appreciation of customer needs. The service, frankly, was very poor. The waitresses seemed to go to ground when the food was delayed and we were offered no information. They were young girls who were willing and pleasant enough but gauche and out of their depth. Butter dishes, for example, were left on the table until the dessert plates were collected. For a restaurant which obviously has ambitions for its cuisine the service was totally incongruous - and this, by the way, on a Tuesday night. It seems there was a party in another room and this was offered as an excuse for the service. That hardly washes when we had pre-ordered our courses. We felt very sorry for the couples whose meals were similarly delayed: we at least had a convivial group to distract us. I have to record that we were refunded £3 per head when our organiser complained. This is a fundamentally flawed establishment whose ambitions outruns its ability to deliver. They need to have a long look at themselves and review what they are trying to achieve. Offering ambitious cuisine with rubbish service and paltry portions delivered by half-trained staff is just silly. It's about the customer, stupid! I remember a night of ironical humour about still being there at breakfast time, going to the chippy and so on! It could be really good but it's not and the owner needs to read these reviews and take them seriously. As matters stand, I doubt any of our 16 members will be returning - and you can be sure they will be telling all their friends just that.

My first visit to the Queens Head was with my mum for a special meal on Mothers Day. I must admit that I was slightly nervous that they had a table free just a week in advance when most other local pubs were fully booked, but I really needn't have worried. The pub itself is lovely with just the right balance between relaxed & formal. The staff were all very welcoming from the moment we stepped through the door. A good sign to see there were plenty of staff on but they were all busy, yet friendly & helpful when serving. Most of the staff were young but all working efficiently and very professional. No a la carte today, instead we dined from the set menu which offered plenty of choice and a good variety. Starters of home cured gravlax and crispy duck salad were tasty. The roast mains (beef & lamb) were delicious. Fabulous crispy roast potatoes, tasty gravy and thick cut slices of tender meat. Meal was topped off with a delicious dessert & coffee and we left extremely happy & satisfied and more than happy to tip 15% for such a fantastic experience. Will not hesitate to return. Fantastic work and a heartfelt thank you to all the team!

We were looking for a lunch stop en route between London and Yorkshire and found the Queens Head on Tripadvisor. A perfect choice, friendly and efficient when booking on the telephone (none of this on line automated stuff) and on arrival. The starters were excellent and beautifully presented as were the desserts - clotted cream icecream is a must. Main courses on Sunday were mainly roasts and my beef was very rare as requested but also very tender.Highly recommended - I can't think of an adverse comment. Lovely situation on the river with holiday cottages which look good but we did not inspect.

We went as a couple and presented a voucher for 25% off we gave this to the waitress before we sat down for our meal. We had a lovely starter and a lovely main however it was the smallest portion we have had, we are not big eaters and we are a petite couple so I do not wonder how hungry larger guests would be. We called our waitress back and ordered some extra sides, we then shared a lovely cheese board for dessert. With soft drinks and two glasses of wine our meal for two people came to £70 , we then said the waitress about our voucher and she said that her manager had looked at it and it was invalid for this weekend (we went on 16th feb so it was valentines weekend) I did say to her it would have been better if she would have told me my voucher was invalid when I presented it to her before we were seated. Nonetheless we didn't want to ruin a good evening. The food was lovely, main course portions very very small and it did not come with any sides or vegetables. I think for £70 I did expect alot more. Great service and waitress very polite however I am a little annoyed that our voucher became invalid after we ate when it was perfectly acceptable before. I should have perhaps read the terms and conditions before printing but as a member of staff she should not have said it was ok to use when seating us !

Just popped in for a spot of lunch on the way to viewing wedding venues. The staff are so profesional and the food so blooming lip smacking good, I shall probably end up getting married here!Go on treat yourself, its excellent nosh at a reasonable price, and they do real ale too.Carpark round the back and a few modern rooms to stay in also. If planning a trip to the Peterborough area but cities aren`t your thing this may well be just the ticket as it is only 15 minutes from the city but a world away in its surroundings.

We went for a family Christmas meal the Friday before Christmas. Alarm bells should have rung when there was only one other table occupied, a decent restaurant should be busy on a normal Friday and you would expect them to be fully booked at Christmas. The starters were delicious, they looked like something from masterchef and the flavours were lovely. The portions were tiny though. Far too small and averaging £8 a head. The main courses were very disappointing. The menu is mostly steak so we expected the steak to be of a very high standard. We are beef farmers so know what we are talking about. The meat was very poor. It was fatty and gristly. and of the six on our table, every one was cooked wrong, blue was rare-medium rare. Rare was medium etc etc. They were served with a small mushroom, half a tomato and a very small faux-chip-fryer-basket of chips. No vegetables or salad. Prices started at £19 up to £40 per head. The deserts were not great either. I order sticky toffee pud for £8ish it resembled one of those little microwave puddings from the supermarket. It was pale and bland. Not rich and yummy as it should be. We won't be going back and since eating there have heard lots of other people locally express how poor they have found it also.

Had not visited for about nine months so thought we would try it for Sunday lunch. The outcome was a tie! My wife was very pleased with hers but I found mine full of reasons to complain.Starters. My wife ordered pickled garden salad which was served in a terracotta flowerpot and declared it delicious and wanted it for her main course. I had the butternut soup that not very exciting but would have been acceptable were it not only luke warm. Soup should always be served hot!Mains. We both ordered beef. My wife's pink and mine medium/well. My wife enjoyed hers but, although the meat was all right, the chef had left gristle on mine all along one side. Sweets. The sticky toffee pudding my wife had was declared "delicious"! My lemon tart though was rather disappointing. It was very shallow, the casing was hard, the lemon was runny and it was advertised as having a meringue topping but this was rather like a layer of watery icing sugar which made the whole thing extremely sweet. Result. Rather like the previous reviews the opinion is split. You decide!!!

We dined at the Queen's head after a recckmendation from a friend. Whilst the portions are smaller than other restaurants offer, the food is sublime! It was wonderful to eat food that looks as good as it tastes. If you go expecting to eat food you would expect to see on 'master chef' then you won't be disappointed- it's not pub food.We all thoroughly enjoyed our meals and the black steak is the best (by far) that I have ever tasted! Our host was friendly and the waiting staff prompt. I will definitely be going back!!

On holiday in yarnwell, we stayed in a lovely cottage, my mother-in-law decided to treat us one evening to a lovely meal. We had read a great comments in the visitor's book about the food at the Queen's Head, Nassington. When we arrived with our 2 grandchildren, 5 of us in all,we read the menu, which was terrible, and the prices were rather, very expensive. We decided to order the fish and chips on the specials board. When it got served , we received fish battered not much bigger than about 3 inches in lengh with 8 chips and a teaspoonful of peas ,my granddaughter had a bigger portion from the kids menu. We all had to have a dessert as we were all starving and we had 1 drink each. The meal cost £89 shocking for what we got and even after our dessert we were still hungary.I'm afraid the only good thing about this inn was the toilets which were spotless .

We have visited this restaurant a few times and always enjoyed it, therefore we chose it for a special celebration meal at lunchtime. The welcome was friendly and we ordered drinks from the bar before being shown to our table. Our starters and main courses were delivered in reasonable time and we thoroughly enjoyed it all. The menu is a bit more "up-market" to normal pub food and is obviously priced accordingly, it is well cooked and very well presented. We all decided to have a dessert but this menu was very limited and the first item ordered wasn't available. We made an alternative choice but the waitress very quickly returned from the kitchen to say that was being prepared and would not be available until the evening service. We therefore reluctantly chose a third option from the limited menu which I would rather not comment on but, to be fair, our disappointment was reflected in our final bill. One thing lacking was a bread roll or even home made bread which is mostly offered in restaurants of this calibre.

We had a mid-week lunch at The Queen's Head. It is a clean, fresh place, with stone and wooden floors, exposed brickwork, rustic furniture and proper napkins. The menu is interesting, with a mixture of pub classics and more imaginative dishes. This could - and should - be a lovely place to have lunch, but it was let down by poor/amateur service. When we arrived two tables were occupied in the bar area, but the young staff member made a show of checking the reservations book before showing us to a table in the restaurant. She didn't ask whether we'd prefer to sit in the bar, although we later heard her offering this to others who arrived (although we did also hear her asking one of these 3 elderly ladies if she'd like to drink her Kaliber from the bottle!). The restaurant area was quite cold, as the main door and a window were both open. We ordered drinks - a diet coke and a glass of wine. We weren't asked what sizes we would like and were given small glasses of each. When we ordered a second coke we asked for a large one. When the bill arrived, the small coke (served in a half pint beer glass) was £2 and the pint was £3. It would have been nice to be given an option as actually one large coke would have been sufficient. I also asked for a glass of tap water, which took a long time to arrive. The server looked puzzled when I ordered the salmon, almost as if she'd never heard of it. The food took quite a while to arrive, which did suggest it was all freshly cooked, but some bread whilst we were waiting would have been nice. We ordered gammon, egg & chips (£11.95) and salmon with an oriental noodle salad and prawn toast (£13.50). It was all nicely presented and the gammon was very good. The salmon had a slightly odd taste, although nothing that I could quite put my finger on, so I ate it anyway. The noodles and prawn toast were very good. The fried eggs looked good, but the yolks were hard - that might have been because they were sitting under a heater for a while, as we heard the bell from the kitchen three times before the server did. We ordered coffees - a cappuccino and an expresso. After a long wait we were told the cappuccino machine wasn't working, so I asked for a regular coffee with some hot milk. After another long wait we were told the coffees would arrive as soon as possible, at which point we cancelled them and paid the bill.Overall, a disappointing experience which could have been so much better.

We had visited the Queens Head in 2012 for a family function and found the food to be very good. On this occasion my wife and I treated her mum for Sunday lunch. We had booked there was no need as there was only two tables occupied all lunchtime. The welcome was very friendly and we soon had drinks and menus. We only ordered a main course. Roast Beef and Venison. When the main course arrived some of the beef was under cooked some was well done. The re was a lack of gravy. The venison was excellent well cooked and nicely presented. We did not order a desert due to the fact that my mother in law has a poor appetite. Overall service good with young female staff who were very friendly. At £11.95 and £12.95 for a main course maybe a little pricey.

Having read the other reviews I was a bit sceptical over this visit, however had "heard" it was worth going to.We went mid week lunch time, hadn't booked, however were welcomed and shown to a table very efficiently. The choice of starters was impressive, as were the main courses.I thought the steaks were very expensive, but the day we visited there was a special offer on the steaks and given the marketing of them in the menu I had to try one. I have to say it is the best steak I have ever had, cooked to perfection, rare as requested. We finished our wine off on a beautiful summer day in the pub garden next to the river.

This was our first visit, and the venue was deliberately chosen as somewhere special which would be open for most of Sunday afternoon and could be done as part of a general outing. The initial welcome was friendly and we soon had drinks and menus. We ordered starters and mains, and didn't have too long to wait before we were shown to our table. The restaurant's website makes it clear that they specialise in high-grade meat dishes (some of them with prices to match!) However, we were not offered the a la carte menu, but a much shorter and more standard one, even though it did have one or two interesting variants. Not long after we were shown to our table, the starters arrived. All appetising, though the portion size was average. A dish of butter was placed on the table, but no bread accompanied it - as it should have done, apparently, when after five minutes we queried the matter. Apologies from the waitress, who brought the bread. We had ordered roasts for mains, and I had requested no gravy with mine, which had been duly noted. When the plate arrived, the meat was swimming in gravy ..... profuse apologies from the manager, and a replacement was swiftly produced. I have to say that the meat was done to perfection - no complaints on that score. A bowl of seasonable vegetables was the standard side dish for the mains, and they were well cooked, but there really wasn't enough in quantity for two people. When it came to desserts, several options were by then off the menu and we didn't fancy any of those which were available. Being charitable, it was towards the end of a Sunday afternoon service, but it was still disappojnting.I might have given four stars because the food was tasty and appetising, and the quality of the roasted beef and lamb was a real highlight. The shortfalls can't be easily set aside, however. I suppose the key question is - would we go back? Maybe. Would we make another special journey? Probably not.

Having visited the Queens Head on numerous occasions in the past for Sunday roast I was looking forward to not only tucking into a hearty meal, but also sharing my plate with my 6 year old as the portions were so generous.Upon delivery by the waitress, not only was the portion of roast lamb tiny, but the vegetables were sparse. 4 undercooked and blemished roast potatoes with a Yorkshire pud. No green vegetables at all. Fortunately (I thought) my husband had ordered some green vegetables and potatoes. However on closer inspection the bowl of leeks that had been cooked and gone to seed, so were in fact inedible. This place is full of glowing certificates, obviously from past performance as today's was poor. We shan't be going back. Which is a shame as it was a firm favourite.

And based on which account you view, you will see a different picture. As for the food, we will not return until Tripadvisor reviews significantly improve. Starters were great but all of our main courses were tasteless despite their pleasing presentation. The pork was like rubber! One of the younger waiting staff, bereft of the required social skills and clinically abrupt would benefit from a week or two in the kitchen. Apparently when asked which cheeses were on the cheeseboard replied, "Oh I dunno - Cheese! You know like Cheddar, Stilton, Brie. That kind of thing" However... another waitress was top of the shop excellent so thank you for your especial efforts. Bank holiday weekend, gorgeous weather and a riverside location for a pub lunch. Perfect? Not quite. The staff didn't want to serve 'by the river' (50 yards walk) so we were asked to wait in the patio area next to the entrance and take our own food down to the picnic tables. Not a major problem, until the staff DID take our food down to the river without telling us and left it on someone else's table without even checking the occupants had ordered! We only found where our food had got to after my wife went back into the bar to complain about the wait and be told it had already been taken out! We found it and thankfully only the chips were cold (the 'open sandwiches' were meant to be) but no apology, not even an offer to replace the chips for some hot ones.I wasn't entirely sure how an open sandwich differed from a normal sandwich other than the fact it was more expensive and likely to be served 'open'. It's also half the size. Just one slice of rye bread with a tablespoon of crab and prawns in lemon mayo. I've had much bigger starters. As Si1970 says, 'style over substance'.

First time here and I don't think we will be back. We had a duo of duck and whitebait for starter, the duck was a very very very small portion (3 slices of smoked duck, some kind of shredded duck that doesn't taste of anything and a horrible dried toast and a few leaves of lettuce). The supermarket smoked duck tasted far better. And the whitebait was ok served with chilli oil, to be honest it would've been nice with just tartare sauce. For the main we had pork belly, it was the worst pork belly I've ever tasted. It was overcooked to the point where I couldn't even cut it with the knife and decided to just left it. It comes with fountain potato that tasted very bland and 3 green beans. I left most of my main course and weren't even bother to order a dessert or coffee as we think its just going to be overpriced, very small portion and tasteless. They need to do something with the food quality, maybe less ambitious and just concentrate on what they good at.The service was ok, nothing extraordinary.

This meal proved to be the worst dining experience I have had in many years. The restaurant makes a feature out of its steaks on offer with the main page of its website drawing attention to its high-quality beef such as Wagyu. Unfortunately on the occasion we dined at the restaurant, the chef had great difficulty in mastering the basics of cooking steak. Having ordered a steak very rare or blue, it arrived medium, which clearly has a completely different flavour from that I requested so led to me sending back a plate of food for the first time in my life. The second steak couldn’t be accused of having been overcooked – quite the reverse: the meat wasn’t just cold but refrigerator temperature and completely inedible, suggesting the chef isn’t aware that steak needs to be brought to room temperature before cooking. The seasoning was also very heavy-handed. We were told by our waitress, who, it should be said, was pleasant throughout, that it wasn’t possible for them to cook a rare steak such that the meat was warmed through, which was rather alarming. They did, however, eventually replace the steak with scallops, and we weren’t charged for it, which is just as well as the rest of the table had long finished eating before I was able to start. Sadly the rest of the meal was riddled with significant problems with other basics: the bread was so heavy as to be unpleasant to eat, a cheesecake had ice crystals inside and the crème brulees had curdled. The waitresses were pleasant but clearly hadn’t been given adequate training: cutlery for puddings was laid out incorrectly, espressos were almost served in large cups, we weren’t asked to test the wine and it was only by a miracle that the chip catapulted off one of the plates didn’t end up in somebody’s wine glass. Although not many tables in the restaurant were taken, there appeared to be problems for others too: apologies for delays in providing food, forgetting bread and so on. A family with children certainly seemed to have a long wait before their meals arrived.Previous reviewers have suggested that there may have been a recent change of hands at the restaurant. If this is the case, they are going to have to get their act together quickly if they are to retain their AA rosette.

We went here for a Valentine's Day special meal. We have been here several times before but have recently been a bit irritated by the long wait in the bar before being allowed to go to our table. On this occasion, the wait was considerably less, luckily, otherwise it might have been our final visit. We had a delicious 3 course meal, canapes beforehand, excellent coffee and petit fours afterwards, all perfectly prepared for £27.50 per person . This is a restaurant where you can order any meal and know that it will be consistently good. If there's an unfamiliar ingredient on the dish you fancy, don't worry, as it will be integrated and will enhance the dish. The only negative about this restaurant is the chairs both in the large and smaller dining are really not comfortable! After the initial renovation of this restaurant, it was more comfortable, but with a change of owners, the furniture needs further investment. The overall rating of 4 is on this account. As we live locally, we didn't take advantage of the special room offer of £55 B&B but, if booking for an event, check their website to see if they have a deal on.

Wanted a pleasant place for a traditional Sunday roast dinner - but also that catered for 2 demanding vegetarians. Staff were very helpful and friendly even when one of our older members of the party pointed out his pint was a bit cloudy! Keg changed and all our glasses of local bitter replaced whilst we checked out the menu in the bar. What I liked about the Sunday menu was it was priced for 1 course, 2 or 3. Vegetarian option was a very tasty mushroom/garlic spaghetti dish. Our meat eaters had roast pork and beef. Food ready we were escorted through to a lovely "conservatory" resturant light and airy. Two of our party were elderly and the staff were very courteous - not dashing off ahead of them. Comfortably sat at our table - our main courses came on hot plates with the vegetables dishes arriving at the same time - cooked to perfection - crisp and hot. Afterwards Waitress asked if everything had been to our liking and I said "5 empty plates says it all" Admittedly the restaurant was not overly busy but had enough atmosphere to make it a relaxing enjoyable sunday lunch. The sweets and coffee were served and were equally dispatched with gusto. Can fully recommend restaurant for the quality of the food and intend to revist soon. Good value for money also!

I went here with 3 other people on a Sunday lunchtime. On arrival we were greeted by a very polite and helpful waitress, who got us sat down in the bar for a drink, while we had a look at the menu. Having ordered, we were promptly shown to our seats in the area at the rear of the bar. Our table was in the corner, which meant we struggled to get past the adjacent tables when the area got busy. My Whitebait was delivered promptly and was tasty, if a little cool. My main couse of the Sunday roast beef again turned up promptly, but was again too cool for my liking, as were the vegetables. Also, there was a lot of fat on the beef, making it a bit stringey. We were asked 3 times by 3 different waiting staff if we were OK over the time it took to eat the main course, which really got on my nerves. Once we ordered our desserts we had to wait 25 minutes for them to turn up, and a similar time for the coffee and the bill. It was busy, but thats no excuse. Overall a lovely Inn, but the food and service was distinctly average.

Staff were friendly enough, service was prompt, however I got a paltry amount of chips to compliment my "chicken" burger....no salad or owt. The meat was actually beef, which wouldn't have been an issue in itself, but the accompanying roll and 'toppings' were for a chicken burger, so I had mayo & lettuce on my beefburger. Not great, not even sure how that went so wrong and wasn't picked up by anyone. Photo shows the combination received, and the largely empty plate, can only imagine the focus was on the brioche branding.

Seeing as my review was removed I will try again! Stay away. I went to the so called “quiz night” and it was awful. You would have found a better atmosphere in a morgue. Hardly any there, no music, vile smell and it was dirty. I use to frequent the pub before lockdown and it was fantastic. It has apparently changed hands since and not for the better. I will definitely not be going back. The smell and filth were enough to put me off my beer let alone dreary feel to the place. Very sad to say that I will not be recommending a once lovely pub
