Fantastic establishment, me and my family go all the time and the hard work the team are putting in really shows. The pub has gone from strength to strength over the last 18 months

Espero volver pronto.

If your into perfect “Old English traditional” pubs with a piano and locals who actually play it then look no further. If you love a great steak then again look no further. If you want a Nando’s slick delivery or Cafe Royal polished experience then maybe this ain’t for you, but a great pub it is. If having a beer and chatting with the locals is up your street you’ll struggle to do better, but it has a great twist the steak. It’s served on an Icelandic hot stone, and as much as I’ve travelled loads, this was new to me, not only was the steak great quality, but the Icelandic hot stone basically means it’s ALWAYS done to perfection because it comes to the table only seared and YOU finish it yourself, it’s not just good it’s great, and you can remove it to a board and finish each piece individually before eating or just allow the whole thing to finish to your liking. The local beer is great and the staff are fantastic, it’s true to say the place is a little rustic and the exposure to the sea has left both the pub and the local area a little battered, but if you wanted a clinical Whitbread type pub why on earth would you travel to a semi remote island in the Irish Sea (Atlantic Ocean) and pop into what is clearly NOT a modern plastic pub. Guys should check out the coal in the urinals (no joke) while anyone visiting the toilets should wonder why there’s a rocking chair on the landing, or more importantly why every now and then it starts rocking all on its own.

...we’d be regulars. The landlady is lovely. The pub dog friendly. Admittedly, we were ‘Britstoppers’, so we stayed in our motorhome in the car park overnight. You don’t get pubs like this anymore- it’s a boozer, no pretensions, no ifs, buts or maybe and certainly no compromises. Bar full of chatty locals, improv on the piano and local beers were very quaffable. It’s shabby, not chic, tired and unkempt but so am I at 61 and I’m worth knowing (I think). If you’re into an authentic experience in a pub which is a dying breed, then make the effort. I bet summers outside are lovely. It’s well worth it. Thankyou for letting us stay, if we’re back this way anytime, we’ll definitely call in again.

This pub is as traditional as you get. The tatty, scruffy appearance is what makes it worth a visit. We have called in a few times over recent years and not much has changed here during that time. The in-house brewery has gone and there has been a change of ownership which has necessitated the personal bric-a-brac changing too. Someone decided the piano would be better against a different wall..... The craft beer quality is as good as it ever was. Only had beer here so can't comment on the food etc. Hence I could only give it 4 stars. This pub deserves a visit, but not by the precious, fussy types for whom this type of traditional pub will always be unacceptable. By all means, dust the shelves and scrub the tables a bit, but don't destroy the character of the place.

Posh it ain't, friendly and relaxed it most definitely is. With excellent value meals - and pork scratchings - and a nice range of really good craft on draft. Situated alongside what I suspect is the only vaguely significant road junction in the south of Walney, finding it is more inevitable than easy. Excellent.

I am truly shocked to see good reviews on here. How anyone can think that eating in the most filthy, disgusting surroundings is a treat is beyond me. Mess and dirt everywhere. It’s like a graveyard for dead furniture. The smell of stale beer made my daughter bork, which wasn’t the best start. Chicken and ham pie was recommended. It was like eating a square slab of salt. Very substandard. Layers of dust, dirt and cobwebs cover this place. The tables are sticky and greasy. It’s like an old warehouse or abandoned building. I’m truly shocked that it hasn’t been shut down. It can’t be a safe place for food to be served. I only hope the kitchen isn’t as filthy as the restaurant. The ladies who run it were nice and friendly. That’s the only good thing. Used to be the place to go, so god alone knows how it’s got so bad.

We visited family on Walney Island for the weekend. We drove past The Queen's Arms on the Saturday and immediately earmarked it for Sunday lunch. Regrettably, we didn't do our homework and didn't realise Sunday lunch wasn't on the menu, nor were the steak dishes which are a standard part of the pub's normal fayre. Despite so much going wrong, we didn't turn round and leave. The pub has a great atmosphere which captured us. Excellent ales and a honky-tonk piano kept us there. We ended up skipping Sunday lunch!

Popped into the Queens Arms for a couple of drinks on a Saturday afternoon. They had a regular music festival on) which we weren't aware of beforehand), therefore there was lots of locals in the pub. We were made to feel so welcome and got chatting to quite a few, in fact what turned into having an hour in the pub turned into a rather long visit. When we were ready to go home, we decided to get a taxi and I asked Julie the landlady for a local taxi firm telephone number, we're upon she insisted on giving us a lift home! How kind was that? There's not many landlords would do that and we were very grateful. We will definitely be returning to the Queens Arms and would definitely recommend it. PS, it's also a dog friendly pub to.

Will not be returning again, table service was awful, soup was spilt all over my hand and lap on arrival to the table, had it been piping hot I'd have been badly burnt, luckily It was "just warm" and also tasteless, on the plus side the bread was fresh, although £17.50 for two soups and sandwiches seems rather steep in my eyes. Staff also needed training on the menu and menus should be made available to view at the bar rather than just a chalk board with vague items listed and the waiter constantly running through to the kitchen to ask the chef. Quirky little pub but needs a good clean, cobwebs and dust do not add Charachter!!

Popped over to The Queens arms for lunch today in search of somewhere new as we tend to go to the same places a lot, not that there's anything wrong with that but we fancied a change. We got a lovely warm welcome from the resident chickens who kept us entertained with their shenanigans. We ordered our meals, both had the same, a cheese and bacon burger which came with chips, salad and relish. It was cooked to perfection and the chips were handmade not the grim frozen type you get in so many places. My partner sampled the Queens own beer that is brewed onsite at the pub and seemed to enjoy it, well he must have as he had 2 more after his first! As I was driving I had a lovely cool glass of rhubarb and rose hip syrup with soda, it was delicious and I will definitely be back even if it's just for more of that stuff. The pub would be great for families with children as there is a kids park right out front for them to play on.

Firstly, this review would be 5/5 if the service and choice & lack of food was better - the food/meals themselves were lovely. Greeted by the barman who instantly told our party of 6 that there was only 1 fillet steak, 1 sirloin steak & 8 ribeyes. Also that there was no chicken either - so my son who was getting a childs meal of chicken, therefore couldn't. He doesn't like any other childrens options so had the gammon instead, which myself & husband ordered also - only to be told there was only 2 gammons left, so I asked what the 'hot special' was, yet again to be told there wasn't any tonight !!! So, nothing else off the main menu appealed to me so I chose the hot beef bun. Finally ushered to our seats we started to unwind a bit, as being told 'no' several times was slightly frustrating. So, the starters came out, absolutely gorgeous, rustic bread toasted on the side of the garlic mushrooms & the prawns. Very flavoursome - as I said at the beginning of this review, the food was lovely !!! My nine year old son enjoyed his mussels too. Then the mains came out, I was disappointed with mine as it wasn't what I wanted originally but still, on the whole it was tastey & the chips were amazing being home cooked. The gammons were lovely too, my son ate all of his, so maybe a good thing having no chicken as this filled him up.Our friends had the steaks - & boy this is what you come here for !!! They are still cooking as you eat them as they are brought out on hot slates. Side salad & chips too, amazing !!! Unfortunately we don't eat steak otherwise I would have chose this, I did try a bite of the ribeye & it was very tastey. Then the last downside was the puddings - or should I say lack of them. We were told there was only sticky toffee pudding !!! I asked why no others & was told that 'because I haven't made any others' ok then, so we all had that. The only other thing puzzling us is why they don't have vinegar ??? When we asked for it the barman told our party that its because it reacts with the beer & the brewery said they can't have it, yet the owner said its because of the slates the steaks come out on ??? Either way, its strange. So, overall the food is lovely & if you want steak then this is the place to come but if you want anything else, check if they have it before booking a table. Food a little over priced but for how it tastes its worth it. Can not fault the chef at all, all meals were thoroughly enjoyed, the service let it down.

Maybe when we went the place was having an off night. Considering we prebooked our meal I think it's fair to say we were right to be disappointed when there was no peppercorn sauce to go with the steaks. As this isn't a seasonal accompaniment I can't understand why there wasn't any, maybe poor planning? I had been dubious about the whole cooking your own meal but decided I needed to embrace new experiences. I won't be doing it again. The steaks are served on a hot rock, sizzling away. However, this gave off a lot of smoke and the pub has low ceilings, therefore it smelt awful and so did we when we left.Things may have been better if there had been some ventilation but there wasn't. It all made for an uncomfortable experience, not recommended for anyone with asthma. One thing we were particularly looking forward to was having a choice of ales. Again, this was disappointing. There was only one ale on tap.During the meal we were advised there was no vinegar on site as it was a CAMRA pub. Yet my beer was cooked by the heat from the rocks. All in all the food was good but everything else was like a bad comedy. We left without a dessert and were glad to get some fresh air. There were plenty other things I could comment on; decor and the serving plates that meant the 3 components of the meal were in 3 different dishes, but I think I should stop now.

Having read the reviews on trip advisor we decided to give it a try.Sunday afternoon at 4.15pm arrived at very quaint building and entered cosy pub area. Seemed busy but most seemed to be carving pumpkins which was a nice thing to see. When we asked about ordering food we were told they ceased serving at 5pm which didn't seem a problem. However a lady, whom we think might be the owner, told us that the best thing to order were the steaks. We said we didn't fancy steaks so were told most other things on the menu were sold out. After checking what was actually available we ordered 2 portions of Garlic Mushrooms, which were very good and plentiful. The main courses were a different story, Pulled Pork Flatbread which was very dry and lacked flavour. A butterfly Chicken Breast in a mushroom sauce which was passable but the third dish of Fish and Chips was dreadful. Skin still on the fish, no flavour whatsoever, mushy peas that were "dry" and just not what you would expect. It was very obvious that 2 of the meals were practically untouched but no one asked or offered an alternative. When we did point out to someone the problem we were told we would not be charged for the two mealsThe "dining" room was chilly. There was a lot of clutter about including an unused undercounter fridge. A good clean would not go amiss.Service was another issue. It was not apparent who was staff as no dress code seemed in place. So unbelievable for what was once a beautiful restaurant!!Overall it was such a disappointment

The hospitality was excellent, the staff worked so hard, food was excellent and tea and coffee flowed all afternoon. The pub is a series of little rooms with a mixture of furniture throughout. Some doorways are low, so it's bend or bump, I've often driven past the pub previously on the way to visit the caravan park at the end of the island, would now consider stopping and having a bite to eat.

The original outer buildings of the Queens have been in-situ since the 1600's - obviously over the years things have developed however the Queens is still an old fashioned INN with 'kitchen'.The charm is in its ramshackle decor and plethora of collectables - however the food is really good - everything is cooked to order, which means it takes a little while to arrive . If you want 'conveyor belt' standard fodder from a restaurant chain, you won't find it here. however if you want fantastic tasting, home-cooking with its real-life appeal then JULIE won't disappoint. ! I had a hankering for a jam suet sponge, which she kindly made in time for our reservation. My husband had the steak , I had the Hot-Pot - all of which were superb. Definitely worth a visit if you enjoy the 'independent sole trader working their socks off to delight their customer' experience.

My wife and I went to visit some friends who live in the local area and this place was recommended.I had the Rib eye steak and let me tell you. This was honestly the best steak I've ever eaten. Didn't require any seasoning at all, the chips were beautiful and the pepper sauce was truly divine. My wife had hotpot, no complaints here either. Packed full of tasty lamb and veg. Again, no seasoning required. As a professional chef by trade. I nearly always have to correct seasoning once the food has been served. This was as welcomed change we both came away very happy.Very highly recommended.

I really liked this place, great atmospher and decoration as well as really friendly staff. Shame about the food. Not that it tasted bad its just that it was all presentation with little substance. I ordered the 8oz fillet and what arrived was a meager 4oz pc of meat 10 chips and a mushroom. I felt totaly ripped off as it was not cheap, shame as i really liked the place..

Been tonight for a meal, there was approx 20 of us. All the steaks came out first, everyone else had to wait approx 40 mins for theirs. They had finished their steaks before ours arrived. The chef did offer sticky toffee pudding for free as an apology, but that's no good if you don't like stick toffee. Last time I visited I felt the place needed a good clean. This still feels like this tonight. I personally won't be returning any time soon.

My husband and I visited the Queens Arms last night for a meal & a few drinks. I had the spicy pea & ham soup & husband had the belly pork & black pudding. Both were absolutely delicious. For mains it was rib eye steak (served on lava stone, so can have it exactly how you want it) and fish & chips. Lovely homemade chips, good service & reasonably priced. We will definitely return.

Arrived early and were greeted by nice friendly staff. The steak meals we had are the best we've had to date. You cook them your own hot black rock which was lovely. The portions were large and if you can eat a pudding we would be amazed. We are pleased it's not local as could be there often.

A friend and I visited to try the food but weren't over hungry. That was a good thing as we both ordered crayfish salad which was delicious and zesty and shared a portion of chips (Belgian frites) which are thrice cooked and salted and are dark golden and have a delicious caramelised taste. We then shared a freshly made queen of puddings with fresh cream and again this was fresh, piping hot and delicious. Heading there to try a hot rock steak this Wednesday so will review that then :-)

I've eaten in Michelin star restaurants and don't think I've ever eaten steak that good anywhere, some of the reviews mention the decor , this higgledy piggledy eclectically furnished pub would lose 90% of its charm if you did it up. It's perfect just as it is, yes nothing matches, great , it has a piano and guitars and tambourines and hand drums for musicians or just eager punters to have a go on , no sign of a TV in this pub and all the better for it, the seasoning on the food may be a little heavy for some peoples liking and I would guess that most of the reviews which mention this are written by auto condimenters who don't taste their food first, if it where me I just wouldn't put salt or pepper out and would look at anybody who asked for it disapprovingly , don't change a thing that's what I say

I had read rave reviews about this place and was looking forward to visiting. We went on a quiet Thursday lunchtime. A limited menu was offered to us, which is fair enough. We had a long wait for the Food to arrive, which again wasn,t a problem for us and a very nice local kept us amused. My fish was lovely, but the chips were overcooked and had far too much salt on them. My husbands gammon was also very over seasoned. As for the place itself I see where other reviewers are coming from when they describe it as quaint, and unusual. All I wanted to do was run the vacuum around. Clean toilets.the lady who served us was pleasant. My husband was impressed by the range of beers on offer. I run a monthly lunch club and went with the idea that the Queens would be a good interesting venue ,but in all honesty our members wouldn't find the place to their tastes. What a shame.

Me and my boyfriend went on a road trip from London to the lake district. We had already booked a B&B in Barrow-in-Furness but had no idea where to go for dinner. Before checking in to the B&B we decided to take a quick tour with the car in the little town to see if we could find a nice place to eat, but no, there was nothing! We ended up driving out on the little island close by and suddenly, there it was, the perfect picturesque, unique and most hospitable place we've ever come across! We had the coolest and most delicious meal with locally produced meat served on a hot stone. The service, food taste & presentation, live music and atmosphere, created one of the best restaurant experiences we've ever had. Funny enough we had earlier that week been to both Aquashard (The shard in London) and Gordon Ramsay's Maze, and the only thing that was even close to this good was the starters at Aquashard, however everything else that The Queens Arms had to offer was soo much better!!!Thank you for giving us a great experience on our road trip! The Swedish Londoners

We visited the Queens on a Sunday lunch time for their brunch offer. Full english breakfast, american pancakes, coffee or tea, all for £6.50. I've never been before but I was surprised by the size of the place. It's a very old building and the twist and turn of the rooms seems never ending. We started off sat around a cosy fire with our coffees whilst we waited for our breakfast. We chose to move through to the dining room, just so I could see more of the building really! As soon as we were seated our meals were ready.I expected the portions to be on the small side given the low price but the full english was huge and couldn't be faulted. The pancakes were a welcome addition and we left feeling full to the brim and well looked after. £14 for two huge breakfasts, pancakes, and two coffees each. You won't get that price of quality anywhere else in town, nor would you find the atmosphere this place has. We'll certainly be back for more.

Last ate here a year ago after visiting bird sanctuary. Came again for lunch with family on a terrible day (roads flooded the following day) so a roaring fire was welcome. The exterior is a bit down at heel, do not be put off and go in. Could be described as shabby chic but it really is the old style with well worn mix of sofas/seats. 3/4 beers on tap had not come across but tried a couple and fine for my taste (no main stream brands). The lunch menu had gone and a menu for lunch and dinner introduced. All menu items are old favourites that constitute pub comfort food but all were very well done; all home cooked with local sourcing. Shared a one off soup made for Chinese New Year! Light clear tasty broth with chicken, bean sprouts and a little pasta, excellent. We had: lamb hotpot that tasted so lamby topped with crispy potato slices; a linguini with chicken and a hint of chili; local gammon seaek plus egg; and fresh (not frozen) fish (haddock) and chips with crispy batter and great rustic chips. Was a Friday, couple of guys regularly come in on the day to practice the piano, wife ended up playing the piano too! No one else in perhaps because of foul weather. Nevertheless, food is great without the slightest airs and graces. Fantastic value for drinks and food at £51 for 4. Not your ordinary pub - quirky sums it up, put will return.

Went here for xmas meal and it was terrible. Starters that we had were poor quality and the main meal was not the promised turkey dinner with all the trimmings. Instead it was a rolled turkey with what tasted like bisto gravy. No mash no pigs in blankets no yorkshire pudding all of which was promised. There was no taste to the meal at all. Dessert was stale biscuits and cheese. Felt quite rushed and awkward with the looks of what are you doing here. Was glad to leave and will not be going back

This was a nice pub where we would come in our twenties to enjoy the beach and the beer. Quite a gap since then! Found this place on Tripadvisor so thought it was worth a look even if a flat tyre tried to get in the way. The fish and chips were excellent, perfectly done chips [I don't like the current trend for great big ones] nicely presented and great service too. Plenty of nice beers although I never tried the wine [a new experience breaking the custom of several decades].There was a fashion in the 70s and 80s for things in baskets; current one seems to be lava stones. This, I confess, was a new one on me so I regarded it like a long ago school chemistry lesson. So take a pleasantly hot chunk of polished black stone and a seasoned steak.... YES, it works! Lovely sizzling and it cooks, and cooks, and cooks! I expected it to go cold. It doesn't and it is not dangerous unless you fancy your own cooked finger. In this dangerous world for pub and restaurant owners, our two lady owners are doing a great job. There is the restaurant and the bar. The bar seemed to have regulars and some sort of music group was setting up as we left.Definitely worth a visit and a second one! I want to play cook next time. Oh, the decor, comfortable and lived in.

It's fantastic to see this lovely old inn breathing new life into the community after years of being neglected! Its landladies Julie and Mary have made it 'home from home' for locals and visitors alike with great food and local beers. If you're looking for somewhere to while away a few hours, where you can kick off your shoes and be comfortable by a roaring fire, then this is the place for you. It's not posh but it has it's own style and the atmosphere is better than anything you'll find elsewhere. I took my Mum (88) and my aunt (79) for my Mum's birthday lunch and they both wolfed down the beer and hot Brie and bacon sandwiches we ordered. There were lots of non-alcoholic drinks to choose from as well, as I was driving. But what really made the day was the two old gals being chatted up by a couple of local fishermen - and the amazing attention and easy chat from Mary, who even came to sit with us by the fire. It's my favourite place in South Lakeland - and I live here!

We had steak cooked on an Icelandic black rock. Julie told me that the last mouthful would be as hot as the first - and it was! I think all steaks should be cooked like this. The steak comes raw and you cook it on the hot slab of rock until it is done to your absolute requirements. I'm gonna get one of these for home. The only downside was that I think the chips should be chunky, but this is my personal choice and doesn't deract from a very good meal.

We decided to go for Sunday lunch. We all had the broccoli soup to start which was home made, very tasty and well seasoned (no need to add your own salt / pepper like you very often do with restaurant soups). For mains my wife had the chicken, I had the beef and my son had sirloin steak. All the meats were perfectly cooked and the vegetables were incredibly tasty and included lovely, crispy on the outside, fluffy on the inside roast potatoes and a massive, rustic yorkshire pudding. After this we were all too full for desert or even a coffee but I couldn't resist a half pint of the dark mild which finished off a perfect meal.On top of this, with it being close to Halloween, my son was invited to carve out a pumpkin lantern which the staff took a photo of before he was allowed to take it home. This, along with a few other customers grabbing guitars and a saxophone from the wall and having a jam, added to the great atmosphere. We had a brilliant time and will be back.

An absolute gem of a pub. Imagine walking through the wind and rain for 3 miles (as we chose to do) and arriving at a welcoming hostelry where you can kick off your weary shoes and relax in arm chair in front of the fire... Add, if you will, a pint of beer well worthy of their CAMRA accreditation and a landlady whose geniality is matched only by her attention to detail. This pub is beautifully adorned with vintage signs and artwork, thick with welcoming atmosphere and brimming with friendliness. At this point, reader, you might assume that I am the landlord perhaps, feathering his nest with a positive review. But no, as it happens, my sister in law lives on Walney Island and I am a 'soft southerner' from lowly Yeovil. Knowing we were paying a visit, I referred to my trusty Good Beer Guide app for a decent pint of real ale and our odyssey began. As well as the warmest of welcomes, four fine real ales greeted us (including one at 9% - corking) and a wonderfully spent afternoon ensued. My wife and I are 'tinkerers' of music and were delighted to find guitar and saxophone ready to play, plus many other instruments to pick up, pluck, bang and tap, without criticism or prejudice. We drank, we laughed in front of a roaring real fire and, as it was Halloween, our 7 year old was presented with a pumpkin to carve and fashion. I cannot think of many other pubs that I have been to where so many boxes where ticked for a small family, and we haven't even tried the food yet! From what I've read, that will really be the icing on the cake. It ain't an easy life buying and running a pub, but I would encourage anyone reading this to try the Queens Arms at Biggar. For me, it's what pubs are supposed to be - warm, friendly, community minded and serving, above all fine British real ale. An absolute gem.

The Queens Arms is a refreshing change from dull chain pubs. The air of informality and studied scruffiness lends the pub an engaging friendliness. It's a big raspberry to the likes of Enterprise, Punch, Greene King etc. The menu is pub staples, done rather well. There is no hint of the dreaded ping of the microwave. The landlady Julie is friendly and is known to burst into comic song occasionally. There's a regular programme of events with a music/arty bias. A decent selection of cask ales and bottles beers too. I've visited several times and have always felt welcome, even when alone with my head in a book. why aren't more pubs like this.

Visited on Wednesday for steak night, had heard good things. As others have said the place is full of character, and decor and furnishing eccentric, but with a particular charm. We opted for fillet steak, which comes on a huge plate with a hot stone to cook it, salad one side hand made chips the other. Don't be daunted by cooking the steak, it's easy, good quality meat and I just cut a piece off and cooked it, keeping all of it moist until the end. The chips are better than the frozen variety, but ours seemed a bit overcooked, they were brown/black but I saw others were golden so maybe a mistake. Really enjoyed the fillet steak, very reasonably priced and good experience all round. Will go back for more.

Situated in the small village of Biggar on Walney Island. Close to one of the best seabird sanctuary's in UK, plus seals. The pub is one of the oldest in the area, 16/17th (?) century, and was closed for a few years before reopening in 2010. It retains a nice well worn but comfortable atmosphere and I understand hold music, literary evenings (not attended any). CAMRA stickers in the window say good beer also served. They have now installed a new(?) kitchen and serving full meals for the last few weeks. Happened to be in the area and hadn't visited the Queens for many a year so gave lunchtime meal a go. Menu is straightforward pub style but it really was home made and to a good standard. Hamburger was the real thing, moist, tasty and with home made rustic chips. Partner had the good sized well made club sandwich. Would like to return to check the mains and the quality of steaks etc and the cooking. On this first visit to full menu it holds some promise.
