Quarter Horse Coffee in Birmingham

I politely asked for a glass to get some water, and the man in the hat making coffee completely ignored me and went back to what he was doing. Then after he finally gave me a glass, I turned my back and he called me a prick for no reason at all. I didn’t hear this but the people at my table all saw and heard it. Completely unprofessional and rude. The only saving grace for this place is that the girl working there was lovely and helpful. This guy completely ruined the coffee shop. I, and everyone else I know, won’t be going back.

Very unassuming & not that attractive from the outside, but go in anyway it's great! Our third visit over the last few months, spot-on every time. Staff are friendly & helpful, have always managed to find somewhere to sit & a small outdoor area is a relaxing space. Food & coffee both excellent. Likely we'll call in every time we're in Birmingham!

Got to be one of the best breakfasts I’ve ever had! I had avocado toast with Gravlax Salmon with nice big chunks of halloumi and mushrooms extra on the side and it was amazing. The portion sizes are very generous too. I’m just sad that I live in Kent and can’t eat here all the time. The staff were very friendly and helpful and the service was very quick even though it was super busy. It’s a must try!

Really great service. Went with my son, his wife and baby. Siobhan (?) was our server and she was great. The food was lovely, and although there was a little problem it was rectified very quickly. Super service, nice place, good food.

Me and some friends came here for coffee and breakfast whilst staying in the hotel opposite and cannot recommend enough, a nice variety to choose from and and top quality too!

Hi, this was supposed to be a less favourable review but read more to see why I think they are still one of the best if not the Best coffee house in Birmingham. I keep returning to QHC for some years now and I expect nothing but excellent quality products and great service. I was a bit disappointed with the service today despite very good quality products (btw their taster espressos cured me of long covid smell and taste loss!), but minor issues which I would not even bother to look for in a chain coffee place but when you're used to the fresh air of top mountains you smell the whiff of the faintest bad odor. I raised my issues with Siobhan because Paul was not there and I was blown away by the way she took them on. It was not a great day for them with several unexpected malfunctions in staff and equipment, yet the place was buzzing and she was helping out at every corner and with every customer. Nevertheless she took the time to explain to me the reasons for the problems I raised, she offered to make up for these minor mishaps, all in a very respectful, polite manner despite the obvious difficult day. The discussion could have gone easily awkward, yet Siobhan is a master of offering excellent customer service. She won me hands down and I cannot recommend this place enough. Hope you continue to trade for a long time. And if you can please expand and grow.

So,one morning my girfriend invites me for a breakfast and that is point when everything starts.We heard an enormous amount of great reviews about that place,but surprisingly were dissapointed by the quality of the food and attitude pf workers for customers.My girfriend orders loaded eggs and probably it was the only mor or less tasty food.My order consisted of shakshuka and smashed avocado,firstly shakshuka with beef sausages was terribly peppered,secondly and what terrifaed me is smashed avocado.The avcado was not ripe enough, the story of hairs in my food begins here.When i find the hairs in my salmon, i start question myself maybe it was mine ,but the hairs were blond and under the salmon, so smbd who was prep that didnt wear any gloves and simply doesnt wear haircap which is mandatory.When i asked for refund and any apology.i havnt got full refund and any sorry.refund was given but when i went out and counted it wasnt the full amount.The moral of the story is please when you are going there read my message and avoid it.I will never recomend anybody going there and food is 🤯💩.MONEY SCAM AND TERRIBLE FOOD

outstanding coffee made with intricate detail and genuine passion. i go out of my way to visit this place because its so consistant and the quality is there every time

Been twice and cannot fault the service,coffee or food. Had coffee and an almond croissant first visit. Then the smashed avocado with crispy onions and salsa. The avocado was piled high and the salsa and salad was plentiful too absolutely delicious. Sourdough toast was crispy and generous in size. All in all would highly recommend.

The independent coffee scene in Birmingham is excellent. I loved the Quarter Horse roast and service. I didn't get to try their food, but the menu looked great.

Coffee's good but the place is freezing. On a cold January day it's the last place you'll want to go to. I thought coffee shops were supposed to be warm and inviting? Maybe they didn't get the memo.

I have to say. Great attentative staff, silky perfect coffee but the Eggs Benedict/Royal combo I had blew my mind. The best I have ever ever tasted. A must try if you visit. 7 star rating from me.

Absolutely great experience, buzzing little venue, happy and friendly staff. Great coffee and the most amazing breakfast bap I’ve ever had, very affordable also given the setting. I had harissa lamb sausage with smashed avocado brioche bap with homemade ketchup. Good portion and great flavours. Fully recommend this place

Loved my visit to this coffee gem. i haven't been in around 2-3 years and the renovations are great. Service was brill and the brunch I had (avocado smash on sourdough with smoked salmon and goat's cheese) was packed full of flavour and a very generous portion. My 2 dirty chai's were the best I have tasted anywhere and I loved their branded glazed pottery cups and saucers.

I usually buy their coffee beans. Everyone has their preferences but for myself, Quarter Horses' Dark Horse blend is by far the best tasting espresso blend i have come across. I have tried many other places because according to James Hoffman (Coffee YouTuber) there is always something out there you will enjoy more... I am yet to find better.They have great customer service, I have come in purely for advice on occasions and the Quarter Horse staff always made time for me. Top quality and friendly staff, its a must try.

Very pleased to be staying nearby, the coffee was fantastic, the food is delicious and not your standard breakfast, staff are all incredibly friendly and dogs welcome!

Come here all the time as over road from my apartment. Would really recommend visiting. Coffee is insane and all made in-house. Food is fresh, flavoursome and different in a really nice way. Perfect spot for breakfast that isn’t your usually Birmingham breakfast spots

I really like my visits to Quarterhorse and reps pleased that as we come out of the pandemic, the business is still going strong. Like many hospitality outlets, they need to make profits quickly and I get that. I’m fine with decent places knocking the price up a little to survive. But some put the prices up that much, it makes me consider my visit. Too me, Quarterhorse is entering this arena. I just think it’s now expensive and whereas previously I’d never give it a second thought to drive from Sutton Coldfield to city centre for a coffee here - now I would cause with food included it’s works out expensive, in particular with other options available. And still my coffee bug bear of wanting it hot continues. Despite asking for my coffee extra hot - it still comes tepid. Shame - love Quarterhorse but will now visit occasionally rather than often

This is a very open and welcoming cafe. The seating is very well spaced so I felt very comfortable. The staff were all very welcoming and friendly. I had a Portuguese custard tart and it was divine. Very well baked and delicious. It was also an interesting experience sitting in a cafe with the coffee manufacturer in a room next to the cafe. Whilst the grinder was on constantly it wasn’t noisy at all and the smell of fresh coffee added a nice touch to this lovely place. Definitely recommend!

My favourite coffee shop in Birmingham. Always get great service here and today was no exception. The staff are polite, the coffee is amazing and the food is amazing! I was served by a lovely gentleman but I dont know his name unfortunately! I will be back for sure!!

Fabulous food, unbeatable coffee, great ambience and service! Coffee beans are freshly roasted in house and the owners go to a lot of trouble to ethically source the best quality coffee.

Had the pleasure of stopping of at this very cool coffee house - where the coffee is quite simply amazing. The layout is very fresh and stylish and the staff are all very friendly. The cookies are also delicious!

Heard some good vibes about this place, as it roasts it’s own coffee beans on site, so I expected an exceptional coffee at a reasonable price. Unfortunately disappointed on both counts. The coffee was pretty bland (insipid) and took the Barista for ever to make (waited 10 minutes) and it’s priced at the normal Nero Starbucks bands, so roasting your own beans does make it cheaper for customers? I had a almond croissant which was not baked throughly and extremely doughy eh! The decor is minimal and industrial but the seating is very uncomfortable. The ambiance is a little hipster pretentious - which is to be expected as it’s located at little out of the way and perhaps seen as exclusive. Overall worth a visit be it’s not a cut above the rest - just same old trying to be different but all form and no substance - oh ha.

Quite highly ranked on trip advisor, so I went to visit.Nicely located near city center on the other road opposite to Ibis hotel.Breakfast Menu is limited but goes on all day long. The avocado toast is good though, worth a try. The drinks are just like any other cafe.Quiet setup and people there to work mostly, good place to get things done. However chairs are woody and not that comfortable.Decent cafe, but can find many others equally good and better.

Friendly staff, delicious sandwiches, great coffee. It's really cool being able to watch the coffee being roasted in front of you! The banana bread is amazing toasted. I recommend grabbing a slice.

Muy agradable y sorprendentemente amplio cibercafé. Un ambiente limpio y tranquilo donde podrá relajarse, tomar un delicioso sándwich (frío o caliente) y un café decente. Todo mientras revisa sus correos electrónicos o termina un poco de trabajo. Hay muchas tomas de corriente para mantener cargadas sus computadoras portátiles o teléfonos.

This is exactly what you want to find when visiting a city - a banging coffee roasting cafe with *great* coffee, nice food, good service, nice vibes and wifi. So good!

Galletas encantadoras. Esta cafetería promete mucho y nuestras expectativas eran altas. El chico detrás del mostrador fue lo suficientemente amable y nos hizo sentir bienvenidos. La única área al aire libre es un espacio pequeño en la banqueta con poco espacio, y los pocos fumadores que estaban sentados dejaron claro que los no fumadores no eran bienvenidos. Encontramos un espacio en el interior que era muy estrecho y lleno de gente, lo cual fue frustrante ya que hay mucho espacio en la cafetería que no se está usando de manera efectiva. Las galletas llegaron y eran hermosas, con un buen equilibrio de dulce, afrutado y de nuez, pero nos impresionaron menos los 20 minutos de espera de un café con leche, que tuve que ir a recoger yo mismo cuando la camarera terminó su turno. Tanto potencial que no se está realizando.

Love this place, visited earlier in the day for a quick coffee on my own then brought the other half back for coffee and cake, he loved it too, opted for smashed avocado on toast and it was perfect simply Just perfect .

The place is for a good cup of coffee. Well, not just good, almost perfect espresso, cappuccino, americano, flat white , whatever . Staff is very friendly, service is excellent and I like to watch trained hands of a barrister making coffee. The sitting places are ok. Food can be ignored in such place, though nothing wrong with it. Buy a bag of coffee to take with you when you leave.

I never knew this was here and was brought along by my wife. OMG the staff are friendly and attentive. My wife had coffee and I had Breakfast Tea. A coffee place that knows how to do tea - thank you.

When you visit an independent and you see a giant roaster in the corner your expectations are high. Quarter Horse does not disappoint! Staff are lovely too.

Whenever I visit anywhere I try to hunt out the places that do truly great coffee. It's a great way to see a city and get that all important caffeine fix! Quarter Horse is perfect. The coffee is sublime and good service too. Most recent visit I had the soup which. Good value and very tasty!

Weather we are grabbing a coffee to go, eating see of their delicious food or buying some of their coffee (best in Birmingham), it never disappoints! Second visit to Quarter Horse Coffee and it never disappoints. The coffee is amazing and the beans are ground on the shop floor so the smell is intoxicating as you walk in.

I just had incredibly helpful and kind customer service in the cafe (having made some pretty annoying requests).

Came here to drink and chat but as soon as I seen a food item, I couldn't resist! Had to order the avo smash. One of the best smashes I've ever had in life! Loved this place, I went back straight after my first visit. Coffee was roasting right next to me! It was unreal. I'm very sure the Barista was weighing nearly every shot of espresso plus they were busy! Now this is what you call a REAL coffee shop. You definitely have to try if you love coffee. One hour free parking available outside, bonus!

Every time we stay over in Birmingham we come here for breakfast in the morning. Every time we love it!

Used to be excellent but in a recent visit I noticed the quality has dropped. No latte art,poorly textured milk etc.

Popped in for a takeaway today, it was our first visit but definitely won't be our last. Warm friendly staff, and the wonderful aroma of freshly ground coffee. I picked up an Dark Horse blend Americano which was smooth and full of flavour.

Absolutely a gem in the rough. Really nice drinks and lovely atmosphere for anyone who enjoys coffee or tea.

Breakfast on Monday morning following an overnight in Malmaison. Great coffee, roasted on the premises, happy smiling staff who were only too pleased to help. Loads of smashed avocado on perfectly toasted bread.

Went here on a Saturday morning for a late breakfast. We ordered the sourdough toast with homemade peanut butter and Muesli with yogurt and honey. Everything was super fresh and delicious and the portion sizes are really generous even for those of us with a good appetite. The coffee was also really good. So nice to see somewhere independent really making a go of it. It's well worth walking the little extra distance from the centre of town for this little treat. We will be back very soon.

My favourite coffee house in this great city! Ethical coffee, roasted on the premises. Great baked goods and wonderful toast. Coffees are always from fresh ground beans with complex tastes. Strong yes, but never bitter

By far the most delicious espresso I have ever tasted! I was staying in the Ibis across the road and went out on a Sunday morning in search of a good coffee and breakfast before my drive home, I didn't have to go far and what a find this place was. I was met with a friendly welcome as soon as I came in, unfortunately they weren't serving any food from the menu only coffee and cake, so I ordered an espresso and planned to go elsewhere for breakfast. However my espresso was so delicious I just had to stay and have another one, and I ordered croissant to go with it, which was warm, freshly made and delicious. It was interesting to discover on leaving that they roast their own coffee on site. A real gem and excellent value for money too compared to the chains, I will definitely be visiting again the next time I am in Birmingham, and hopefully will be able to try some of the food from the menu then too.

Literally across the road from our budget hotel, this coffee bar not only oozes style but also provides wonderful coffee and sourdough toast. Smiley staff and a cool vibe. Recommended

We went there by accident early on a Sunday morning, and it was open. The drinks were lovely and the cookies were to die for! It was a bit expensive but the decor was very aesthetic. Very happy.

Not the kind of place to curl up in a comfy chair to leisurely drink your coffee. Stark, clean lines and hard chairs is the order of the day. But it’s all the better for it.

The coffee here is another level, it's roasted on site and has a very distinct and attractive flavour to your pallet, located in a great area with an hours free parking outside. Not to he missed out on for coffee lovers, you can even buy some to take home and enjoy it there too!!

Popped in for a quick take away cappuccino and a cookie; the cappuccino was great, great tasting coffee and not too much milk - temperature spot on. The coffee is always spot on here!

Seating is industrial, not very comfortable but you can't get cosy inside anwyay because the heaters are not up to the job. Flat whites are good, as is the salmon on sourdough.

I called in around 10am one day in July, had a very nice coffee but was disappointed that I could not have cream with my Americano....isn't this fairly mainstream now....to have a choice...skimmed, semi, full, hot or cream?

We stumbled across this 'proper' coffee house a couple of weeks ago. We come for Cheshire to Birmingham now most weekends due to kids activities and this has quickly become our preferred location for a couple of hours stay. Good WI-FI. Friendly helpful staff, great coffee and their sourdough with mashed avocado and feta or salmon is just perfect.

I always go to quarter horse for my flat whites and amazing filter coffees! They do amazing brownies and delicious avocado on sourdough toast. The service is always on point. The music is ace and the vibe is chilled!

I tend to drop in here for a take away coffee as I head to work. At the time I arrive in the morning the on street parking is still free. Excellently made coffee - every time.

I was amazed to find this great coffee maker/cafe literally across the road from the hotel I was staying in . Bristol Street is pretty bleak, so the discovery of this cafe was a revelation. Inside this simply decorated cafe, coffee is roasted and grounding site , and can be bought . The coffee is delicious and smooth. There is free wi-fi. Try it and enjoy.

Quarter Horse Coffee serve you their in-house roasted coffee beans. After taking a few sips of my AeroPress Kenyan coffee, I immediately went back to the bar to purchase a bag of their beans.

Worth finding this place. The coffee is smooth and full of long lasting flavour. The baked goods are equally wonderful - although I only tried the croissant. Wifi too.

My friend and I were staying at the Ibis Budget hotel opposite the coffee shop for an overnight stay for a gig at the O2 Academy Institute. We didn't fancy the budget breakfast so popped over the road to the coffee shop. I'm so glad we did!! I had smashed avocado with smoked salmon on sourdough toast topped with chilli flakes accompanied by a coffee with almond milk. Omg! Better than any budget breakfast by half!! The shop was quiet but not empty, the service prompt but friendly and unhurried and there was a mountain of smoked salmon on my plate. There were fresh sandwiches, cookies and brownies on offer which we bought for our journey home. I woyld thoroughly recommend giving the budget breakfast at the hotel a miss and visit this great place instead. You won't regret it

I really try not to drink at Costa/Starbucks/Nero these days. The coffee here at Quarter Horse is so much better than that on offer from the big chains.

Came to visit family & were staying in Ibis Hotel opposite so saw it and thought would give it a go. It's lovely on the outside and inside imaginative decor. Only thing that I was not impressed with was the price of a soya hot chocolate. Over £2 and it came in a miniature milk glass (no handle) it is coffee orientated obviously but all the menu should be A*

Come here often to get a takeaway grilled sandwich and coffee. Each time the food has been very tasty, well filled sandwiches and great customer Service. It's quickly becoming one of my favorites in this city...

Wonderful lattes and flat whites. They have different flavored milk options and different blends which makes it fun and different! The perfect place to go for a cup of coffee and a snack.

I stayed in a hotel across the street from this coffee shop and visited it 3 times while in Birmingham. The staff is incredibly friendly and helpful. I had a cappuccino, espresso, and filtered coffee, all were tasty! I even bought beans to take back home. The food was amazing as well. Everything available looked good and I had a hard time choosing between the options. I would definitely recommend this coffee shop to anyone traveling to Birmingham and I will be returning!

I've looked at this place many times while passing slowly in my car at rush hour and today I worked out it was just by a shop I needed to go to so brought my dad and daughter here for lunch. We all loved it. My daughter's Avocado on peel and stone sourdough was amazing, and my chorizo, pepper and cheese grilled sandwich was fab too. Dad went for toast and marmalade: the marmalade was really fruity and definitely tasted home made. Coffee is great too, nice hit but smooth and rich. We will be back, defo.

I found the food menu to be so llimited and the drinks were tiny. I know the style of this cafe is minimalist but it was limited and over priced. My colleagues food came about ten minutes before mine and I'd only ordered toast - when it eventually came there wasn't even an acknowledgment that I'd been waiting so long. I have been wanting to try the coffee at Quater Horse for months now, and finally with a kid-free day my husband and I jumped into the car and headed into town. From the outside Quater Horse looks amazing... inside, well, minimalist would be an understatement. I suspect they are going for minimalist and ended up with stark, cold, uninviting. As a previous review mentioned, the seats were so uncomfortable, certainly don't invite you to stay and have another coffee. The bench seat by the front window had a bent leg. The tables were dirty - and it's not like the place was heaving. It was also quite cold inside.

Perfect airy space for a relaxed morning coffee and breakfast. The staff were lovely and polite, the breakfast was super tasty and great quality. The coffee as you would expect from an in-house roasters was too notch.

Stopped off for breakfast after dropping my son off at Grand Central. Always loved the coffee here, but first time for breakfast, and I was not disappointed. Smashed avocado and goat's cheese on sour dough with chilli flakes was awesome. Seasoned well and accompanied by a perfect cappuccino. My daughter had organic granola with yoghurt and honey. Delicious. And we were served by Adam, he was warm,friendly and chirpy on a rainy Brum morning. I'll be back soon for sure...

I have been recently wanting somewhere to do some work away from the distractions of home! I passed this coffee shop located on the Bristol Road a few times and checked out their website.

Discovered via TA and although it's in a strange location, on the Bristol Rd by China Town it's worth the effort to get there. It has a roasters which was not in action when I visited. Anyway, I tried an Aeropress which was very good. There was a nice selection of cakes on offer too which I had to try and really enjoyed. They also do sandwiches. My only complaint is the seating. Wooden chairs which aren't very comfortable.

The coffee is superb, roasted on site and prepared with an absolute commitment to making a brilliant cup of coffee. I would go there for the coffee alone but happily the food is just as good. I had a warm breakfast roll which was fresh brioche with a mushroom filling. I will have cake next time. It is a nice place to relax and work with a mix of small and long tables.

Came across the quarter horse cafe by accident and immediately regretted it. Daft food, 'hipster' menus and staff and customers so up themselves it was unbelievable. Waited ages for the food and it most definitely wasn't worth the wait and they missed our drinks off then denied we ordered them. Awful and pretentious, would not recommend

Always excellent welcome, service, and coffee. Visit here regularly and never disappointed. Sour dough toast and marmalade for breakfast keeps me going for hours. I buy beans from here and the friendly knowledgable staff always look after me.
