Our favourite restaurant. Been visiting since it opened in 2007. We have food allergies and we have always been looked after so well with personal menus. Nothing is too much trouble. We visited during the Birmingham Food Festival as the menu looked great and at £60 pp fantastic value. Highly recommended.

This was a well overdue visit because it’s a restaurant I’ve wanted to go to for ages so when I found out it was taking part in The Birmingham Restaurant Festival it really was a no brainier. Really good service throughout our visit from the moment we arrived and shown to our table until when we left 2 1/2 hours later. Every course was first rate - excellent taste & presentation - we did the festival menu with one of us being a vegetarian and it was superb We decided for a bottle of wine instead of the wine pairing as the options were good but in hindsight probably should have gone the pairings route. In view of it being the festival menu the cost was good value for money

If could give 3.5 stars I would. Went with high expectations which just weren’t really met. Some of the dishes were very good, but not outstanding or any real wow factor. No doubt an excellent and accomplished chef but maybe the fact the restaurant was only half full on a Friday evening says a lot? Also the signature dessert 10,10,10 whilst very good was the result the dish received on the Great British Menu but it was 2008, which for us said it all! I probably enjoyed it slightly better than my wife but one of the poorest Michelin star restaurants we have been to and question how much longer it will hold one. In my view usurped by newer and up and coming restaurants. We wouldn’t return unfortunately. Staff very young but very good and attentive.

It’s been in existence since 2008 and obtained its start soon. After and is the oldest Michelin star in Birmingham. Very odd interior, on entry the bar with large seating area then down two steps to the dining area with a very aged carpet and very odd interior of aged designed seating and some Interesting art with rattan see through lights fixture with black tables - No white table cloths. Extensive wine list. 3/6 course or tasting menu. Choose the three course with the extra 10/10/10 desert which is the chefs signature dish. Staff are extremely lovely and warm especially the sommelier Josh. The first chef gift was lovely with Bread with tunworth cheese The blackened potatoes With beautiful dots was also excellent The French bread with butter and marmite half was also excellent.the marmite butter actually tasted of marmite which can be a positive. The bread is similar to a baguette but roasted so crispy outer and inside. The duart salmon was excellent- fresh and well Accompanied with Kolrabi and cucumber and caviar on the top. Mains- two Slices of medium rare beef which has been aged for 28 day and a further week by the restaurant, 50g each with a green asparagus and other leave and flowers and potatoes and white asparagus and sauce with beef jus. The beef was Disappointing as did not have the grassy taste of a aged beef. Combinations good but did not wow! The potatoes accompanied dish was very good with lightly grilled potatoes with white asparagus and courgette strips. The 10/10/10 was excellent- strawberry jelly/ film with meringue egg with custard with a creme brulle at the top with strawberries at the bottom and a strawberry Medellin. The next desert was good. But the 10/10/10 was better . Service was excellent, warm, friendly and accommodating.

We visited for a birthday celebration. Purnell’s is a renowned fine-dining restaurant located in Birmingham, known for its chic and contemporary ambiance. It boasts a Michelin star, a testament to the high-quality cooking and the innovative culinary vision of Chef Glynn Purnell. I had mentioned I don’t eat dairy and had a dairy free menu so I could eat absolutely everything on each of 5 courses which was such a treat. This was an excellent evening and Purnell’s is well deserving of its Michelin star. The front of house welcome was warm and well-judged, friendly and helped create a relaxed environment. The food started brilliantly with three delicious ‘gifts from the kitchen’ that set the tone for an evening of high-end food. As we went through the tasting menu highlights included the mushroom ravioli, which came with a sauce of amazing flavour, and the burnt egg custard surprise, with pistachio and rhubarb elements which was my personal favourite.

We went for the Valentines evening set menu. The service was good but a little false, but what let the experience down was the food. The courses seem to decrease in quality as they went along, the wine was nice, we ordered extra truffles as a treat but they were tasteless, a shame as they were an added expense. As soon as we had finished our dessert we were asked if we would like to move to the seated area at the front, clearly to free the table for the next guests. All in all we felt it was extremely overpriced for the experience, which we were looking forward too. A real shame.

From start to finish the experience at Purnells is faultless. The staff are extremely attentive and friendly without being OTT, you are treated beautifully as soon as you step through the door. The decor is relaxed and warm but timelessly chic and the birdsong through the corridor is magical. The food is on another level, every course is packed with flavour as well as looking visually stunning and the stories that come alongside add to the experience. The tasting menu and chefs table menu are, in my opinion, very affordable for a Michelin star restaurant of this standard, and the drink selection is second to none.

Exceptional friendly staff and customer service from the moment they opened the door to us. We sat at the Chefs table and had the set tasting menu. The Chefs came out and explained each course as it was served. We also had bread and butter ( wish the marmite butter was available to buy), a “gift from the kitchen” and petit fours. Two of our party had the wine pairing and the sweet red with the mint choccy chip dessert was pure alchemy. Really excellent food and atmosphere. Thank you Glyn Purnell and your team.

Disappointed with the vegetarian food. In today’s times, it shouldn’t be this hard to present good vegetarian options. The menu doesn’t give away much so we went with an open mind. We like trying out different restaurants & the fine dining & Michelin ones for special occasions. The courses - Gifts from the kitchen was style over substance & there was more theatrics than quality in the food. The butter for bread was very salty, which we were told about but my did it deliver that flavour! Everything after that had a bit of sweet tone to it. Heritage Carrots felt like it was literally steamed carrots with some purées & gels around it. Beetroot was a dish with beetroots in different ways so was good as concept but the potato which adds to the carbs of the meal was tiny. Crown prince pumpkin again was pretty much the same style with a crispy kale for texture but the was similar to the other dishes. Millionaires chocolate tartlet was okay, nothing to blow us away for Michelin standards. A bit more thought could be given to balance out the dishes with carbs, fibre & some protein. It is probably easier to have a piece of meat with veggies to dress with & a jus. If it wasn’t so late in the evening, we would have cooked something else after getting home. This place does not cater for vegetarians in comparison to other places like Opheem or Simpsons. Definitely not worth the price you pay at £80/person!

This is hard to write because we had a fabulous evening and exceptional food apart from the ‘main’ course. Unfortunately this was not rare but raw and when challenged we were offered sharper knives since it wasn’t possible to cut through with the ones provided. It’s such a shame because we were having a great time and truthfully if they had just said sorry we probably would have omitted the course without issue. A little thing ! I would however hope that there is learning from this review and I would still have no issue recommending this restaurant as one of the best I have eaten in.

It was good to see the place busy albeit reduced covers due to Covid, and to see Mr Purnell in the kitchen in person. The food was excellent, every morsel including some things that we weren't sure we would like. With a couple of complimentary courses we had eaten enough which can be a worry in some starred restaurants. Service was exceptional without being stuffy, attention ti detail was exceptional, on a old day even our coats were returned to us having been warmed!

This was our first visit to Purnell's, which had been recommended to us by several friends and family. For me, there are three elements to measure a restaurant by; The food, of course, the service and the ambience. On arrival, we were warmly greeted and made to feel welcome by the attentive and well presented staff. The menu was explained clearly and we opted for the Summer Tasting Menu, which was £85 per person plus service charge, which we had anticipated and were comfortable with, given that Glynn is a renowned and highly regarded chef, with one Michelin star and many other culinary awards.A procession of inventive, sumptuous and amusing dishes followed, which were some of the best we had ever enjoyed. Our personal highlights were the 'gifts from the kitchen', the lamb rump and the 'egg surprise', but any of them could have made the top three. The staff were enthusiastic with their description of each course and appeared to really enjoy being here and took a pride in every aspect of their work. The only downfall for us was the decor and the appearance of other diners.Given the fact that we've had months of lockdown, there's been ample opportunity for a bit of a makeover or even a complete re-design. We stayed overnight and went to three other establishments during our visit (Hotel Du Vin, Bar Utopia and Gino Di Campo's) all of which were in a far better state and supplied the 'wow factor'. We were seated near to the kitchen and the area by us, could best be described as shabby. The appearance of the whole place also looks tired and uninspiring. The other disappointment, was the lack of a dress code. Diners were turning up in scruffy jeans, trainers, t-shirts and even workwear - one lady had the look of someone who had been gardening all morning and had come to Purnell's without bothering to change out of her well worn Gola trainers. Call me old-fashioned, but I think there needs to be some kind of dress code. Did we enjoy our lunch? Yes. Would we be hurrying back? No. We had two G & Ts, a bottle of Viognier and two coffees and paid £270.

If you have a milestone birthday don’t expect Purnell’s to go the extra mile. You’ll be disappointed, if you expect a candle bring your own. Maitre D couldn’t understand what my problem was on the night even though I explained how underwhelming the birthday surprise was. Some aspects were excellent, some good, some ok, some bad. Some of the food and wine were outstanding, the staff superb. Good selection of drinks for no drinkers. Table was good near the kitchen but ok. Purnell’s is a small place and some diners were very noisy, when Glynn came to them they were twice as loud. We could hardly hear each other. My main annoyance was that I talk to the restaurant twice to organise a dessert for my husband’s milestone birthday they reassured me it was on hand. Completely underwhelming and not even a candle,I felt annoyed and disappointed. £450 for 3 people two non drinkers and we left slightly hungry even though we aren’t massive eaters. Portions are minute and the main course of lamb a bit tough. We had to order extra bread to fill the gap. Would we be back? Not in a hurry if ever. The Maitre D wasn’t the easiest to complaint to as he couldn’t see the issue and dismiss me as apparently that’s what we do for birthdays. I didn’t want to say more as it was my husband’s night left feeling annoyed. Was meant to be very special dinner but for my money I’ll go elsewhere next time. Somewhere that can accommodate a small birthday request specially as I offered to pay extra. Forget about a courtesy you aren’t special. With very little effort they could have made the night very special.

The food was ok, but waiters & management team (with the exception of one waiter) were NOT wearing masks or visors in an indoor environment. The contact between meals was therefore uncomfortable and much closer than 1m... and frankly worrying. To date other restaurants have been over vigilent with servers keeping distance and wearing masks. We felt extremely worried and would advise that this puts guests at risk.. It ruined our gift and meal, which was for our anniversary. We expected more as the meal carried a £160 price tag and as such all covid prevention should be in place.https://www.tripadvisor.co.uk/ShowUserReviews-g186402-d785556-r762989806-Purnell_s_Restaurant-Birmingham_West_Midlands_England.html#

Ate there last night, on one of their first few nights open after lockdown. I don't know how many covers they normally do, but felt very well spaced out and we were able to relax and feel safe.Service was very good. Friendly and attentive. The food was outstanding. The meal opened with a very fun sort of amuse bouche. I don't know why restaurants of this type always try and impress with their bread and butter. But impress they did. The first proper course, haddock and eggs, was stunning. I'd normally run from eggs, but it seems to me impossible not to love this clever tasty dish. I won't recount every course of the tasting menu we had, but each course was a distinct treat, sometimes displaying theatre, sometimes just showcasing the kitchen's ability to cook to a standard far beyond mere mortals. The monkfish was a star for its distinctiveness, and the beef for its solid cooking. As you might expect, cookery like this isn't cheap. But given the standard of the food it is very good value. You'd have to be in a terrible mood not to leave this place with a smile on your face. A wonderful experience we'll think about for long after.

Glynn was visible and asking for improvements with the current safety measures...couldn't find fault. Service and food as normal, impeccable and sublime. So looking forward to our next visit.

The food here is simply great and even some of the courses were recognisable from TV. The wine is also very nice and they stock "Wild Boy" which is my favourite blend going.

Went for Brummie Tapas. Amazing experience for a Michelin star visit, cannot daily the food or service. Given 4/5 because the toilets were disappointing - a bit dated and not the cleanest when we visited.

In our 70's a three course lunch a gift from our son. From walking through the door to the time we left some two hours later this was without doubt a remarkable experience, the staff were just wonderful with help and explanations at every head turn.As for three course lunch it started with canapes, each one a picture in front of you that is beyond description (a bowl of edible charcoal) beyond belief was just one of three delights all delicately prepared. The ensuing three courses were each a triumph of culinary endeavor by presentation bettered only by the remarkable tastes that followed. Well worth breaking into the piggy bank for, it was full for lunch on a Wednesday in winter - speaks volumes!

Once again, Purnells didn’t disappoint. Fantastic attention to detail is taken from the moment you walk through the door until the time you leave. You are made to feel very welcome. The staff are so attentive, polite and friendly. My husband had the wine flight with his meal. We were very impressed with Adrian, the sommelier. He was very knowledgeable and answered any questions we had. He also adapted the flight to my husband’s personal taste. Big thanks go to Jarek for being very professional and again very friendly and welcoming. As you can tell by this review we love the whole Purnells experience. Summer tasting menu and Winter tasting menu, done!See you for the autumn taster! The Tillsleys

Not our first visit, however first for a longtime, and the first lunchtime outing.....we 'upgraded' to the 8 course version and not disappointed, first time of eating charcoal, the chocolate mint chip experience has improved and has the brûlée....very clever. The fish and meat courses where equally as good, as was the fish and meat combination. A superb experience great staff great food.

We went 2 days before valentines and we loved it. We had the 10 course tasting menu. We loved every dish. Just perfect . From edible coal. To eggs for desert. Every course was perfect. Service great to. The restaurant wasn’t busy which was very surprising but valentines was 2 days away. Because of this the courses came pretty quick, which we would have preferred to be slower. Other than that it’s one of my fav Michelin star restaurants I’ve been to.

We booked the Brummie Tapas for lunch. This is essentially a tasting menu in the Living Room area which is near the bar; although a more relaxed feel it is certainly still very well decorated and the staff are attentive. The brummie tapas seating is a very large table of 8 people, as a party of 4 there was a lot of space between us and the other guests on the table so that it still felt like an intimate gathering. The other guests also had an early booking so uncoordinated timing of food made it feel even more unlinked. We were served this tasting menu course by coursr with 7 dishes offered which were incredible, the combination of flavours and selection allowed us to have a good understanding of the variety of foods and cooking styles they have. Although small portions as a tasting, we were definitely full by the end of the meal. Favourite dishes were the braised neck of lump and mint choc chip dessert. We would definitely return for this or to try the a la carte menu.

Visited for a 21st birthday treat and had the 9 course seasonal tasting menu. Wonderful evening which flew by. We couldn't believe we'd been in there for over three hours. The staff were lovely and attentive without being intrusive. Particularly loved the crab course. However, the biggest surprise came at the end of the meal. I've not got a sweet tooth but the Burnt English Cream was honestly hands down the best thing I've ever eaten. Two weeks on I'm still thinking of it fondly. Thanks to Mr Purnell who has made me go soppy over a pudding.

We had the most wonderful meal at Purnells. We had the 5 course lunch menu, every course was absolutely fantastic. The cod especially was perfectly cooked and I could eat it over and over again. Exceptional service from all staff. My mom had the best birthday celebration and we can't wait to come back. We thought the lunch menu was excellent value as well for food of this standard.

I had heard a lot of positive opinions in regards to this specific restaurant, from both friends and family. I decided it was finally time to give it go. I however was left feeling rather disappointed and underwhelmed by the food in which we were served. There was nothing wrong with the food, it wasn't burnt nor undercooked, it was purely the fact, given the prices, it wasn't worth it. I have had better service and food, for half the price at an unknown restaurant chain. The desert however was delicious and pushed this review up to 3 stars.

We had the purnells journey menu bought through travel zoo for my boyfriends birthday. We've eaten at a few Michelin starred restaurants previously so were excited to try purnells. The food was such a disappointment though, none of the courses had the wow factor and the smoked haddock course was so over powering my boyfriend couldn't eat his and mine made me feel so sick as it was paired with cream, it was disgusting. The dessert was the best course. All in all not worth the money. The ambience wasn't great either, we couldn't wait to leave.

What a fabulous way to spend a Saturday lunchtime. Booked by my son as a special treat for my 60th birthday and the two of us went today. We both chose the 6 course winter tasting menu and we couldn’t have been better served. Exquisite deliciousness came with each course, served with expert service and an explanation of each course. Highlights for me were every course however, the Cornish Crab, and the fillet of beef with the famous dessert of burnt egg, were outstanding. Even the bread and butter I would have happily eaten every day for the rest of my life. Glynn you are a culinary genius and I for one applaud your imagination and expertise- thank you and your staff for a wonderful birthday lunch, one I will never forget.

We booked Purnells whilst visiting Birmingham for the first time. As a last minute booking the only option available to us was the Brummy Tapas menu on a big table next to the bar. It was a very relaxed environment, which we enjoyed. The welcome was warm and the service from all the staff throughout the evening was fantastic. The tapas was a 5 course tasting menu (with some extras) served in a tapas style. We had the wine flight to accompany and some of the wines were outstanding, all were very enjoyable. There was an interesting range of wines and some bold choices, the sommelier is obviously very confident in his abilities and rightly so. They were delicious and fit the menu beautifully.

Loved the whole experience. We were in restaurant for nearly 3 1/2hrs. Time however flew by as we had the 9 x course taster menu. My son doesn't est red meat so staff had no issue in offering a veggie alternative, which was fab We had from beetroot, crab, turbot, venison, which were all absolutely gorgeous I am not into chocolate so my children helped me out with the puddings, that all looked divine. Even as a birthday treat they gave me a treat st the end of apple sorbet that was right up my street. Staff were fantastic especially our waitress and a wine expert/sommelier that was lovely. Would definitely come back for a special occasion as it is an expensive treat. Thankyou to the staff who were all lovely. Very relaxed restaurant in deed.

We visited as a couple , the first time for us in a Michelin star restaurant; I had requested seating in a quiet area of the restaurant , which was great because it overlooked the kitchen. Professional and friendly service throughout. We were seated to the lounge area and had our first drinks, with olives . We opted for the purnells journey . We didnt opt for the wine tasting but the couple next to us did and it did extend the whole experience. The food for the purnells journey was simply delightful and delicious . The skill and taste that had gone into these dishes was beyond our expectations. The waitresses were very knowledgeable about each dish and were happy to explain the basic process that the chefs used. We were not rushed at all - we arrived at 12pm and didnt leave until around 2pm , we really enjoyed the experience. My only critique was that the duck breast was slightly overcooked for me - I should've told the waitress, but it tasted so delicious I was equally happy with it .

Friendly welcome. Dining area is L shaped with comfortable seating and a nice layout. The food was fun and was supported by some interesting props in its presentation. Normally I prefer savoury dishes but the egg custard dish was really nice. Service was efficient and friendly. For me the wine list was good but lacking in wines of good value and vintages. Overall a very nice evening.

The booking process was so easy and the team helped sort the menus to meet our exact needs - moving dishes that I really wanted to try. The service was attentive but friendly and unobtrusive. The 9 course tasting menu was awesome and well worth trying, all dishes exquisite and full of flavour. The mint choc chip experience really finished the meal. I would have no hesitation in recommending Purnell's to anyone but had two SMALL concerns - we had fewer 'gifts' than tables around us and had no chocolates at the end as we don't drink tea/coffee. Only small points in an otherwise impressive meal. We'll certainly return to try the Winter menu.

Here is the translation: "I am very disappointed with the service I received. The attention was poor, and the minimum expectations were clearly not met. The staff showed no interest in solving my problems, and the overall quality of the service left much to be desired. I would not recommend this place to anyone looking for professional treatment and a positive experience. It’s a shame that the service was so disappointing."

Had another amazing night here. Always a great crowd and the acts are bang on. You wanna see Erasure? Here's the absolute best nearest thing. You wanna see Oasis? Here are a bunch of talented lads that give you that and lot more (guitarist and lead singer smash it and massive props to the drummer - always overlooked but this guy was mint!). My ultimate respect goes to the amazing bar staff who are so understanding, patient and efficient. Give these guys a pay rise! Top service under much pressure. Shout out to to Terry and to he who is known as Big Black Ball (he says it's not a condition but personally I think he should get it looked at). 5 stars all the way!

I’ve never been more excited and thoroughly pleased to try fish and chips. There isn’t any takeaway that safely offers Gluten Free in Quinton or around Harborne. This place was recommended to us, they safely offer Gluten Free with a separate fryer and even cooks it right in-front of you, and it’s fresh to order! It costs only £10 for GF small fish and chips, and it certainly isn’t small either! The chips were soft and crispy, plenty of salt, the fish batter was actually CRISPY and the fish itself was flakey, soft and juicy. My husband isn’t GF but he ordered it too and said it’s absolutely delicious! This will now become our regular fish and chip shop, thank you for catering to coeliac disease so safely. You should put signs outside offering GF, or advertise it as i’m sure even more people would flock here. Thank you to the staff🩷
