Prithvi Restaurant in Cheltenham

We had an excellent meal at Prithvi as a family. The restaurant is stunning, intimate, cosy and beautifully decorated. The service was excellent, warm and friendly and not at all stuffy. The food was outstanding from start to finish. Would highly recommend and will definitely return.

Exceptional food and service once again!

We have visited Prithvi several times, but not for a couple of years. This visit was with friends on a Saturday evening. Welcome was warm and friendly and the service throughout was excellent as always. This was the first time for our friends who were all "blown away" - we took the 7-course "tour" and it was sensational. I would definitely say this was the best visit we've ever had - and we will be back soon.

My wife and I, together with another couple, enjoyed a fabulous experience at Prithvi on Wednesday. This was advertised as a night of refined dishes and wine pairings hosted by one of Alsace’s most celebrated winemakers. It was a fixed price event, and included a welcome drink and canapés together with a 5-course meal plus many extras. We were served way more wine than we expected and had a thoroughly great night (starting at 7pm and we left at 11.30). Totally outstanding!

A generously hospitable restaurant at ease in its own skin. As it was our first time, we went with the taster menu which turned out to be a good choice. We were able to sample the wide range of tastes and textures which this kitchen is capable of producing. The food was artful, with wonderfully balanced taste. It was adventurous without trying too hard. The staff were generous and attentive.

Flavours and service are perfection. Tasting menu is fantastic. So fresh and creative without being too rich. Brilliant cuisine.

Excellent atmosphere, food and service.

This restaurant could not get any better, the ambience the staff the food just about everything. This restaurant is an absolute must I love it here I have never tasted food as good as this. Big thanks to all staff you are all Amazing but in particular the gentleman front of house who sorted our parking and the lovely blond waitress with a dog called Nessa you made our evening even more special. As regular customers we are always impressed, but on Saturday 8th February we were treated to a spectacular luncheon and superb service. All our party felt that everything had been raised a notch or two. Would wholeheartedly recommend Prithvi

This was our fourth visit and as before maintained the superb high standard we’d previously enjoyed. The dining room itself is beautifully decorated in sumptuous rich dark teal and gold, with perfect mood lighting (unlike the stark bright lighting of some other restaurants making them feel like a canteen!). The staff without exception are professional, efficient and friendly. We were a table of 6 and chose the 7-course taster menu. The food is sublime, the understated description of a ‘selection of snacks’ were a series of 3 separate flavour and texture explosions. Subsequent courses continued to please in the same way. We would all highly recommend this experience, and look forward to our next visit when in Cheltenham again.

A most excellent gourmet meal from the fabulous amuse bouches, 3 totally different, the choux cheese were like eating fromage clouds, the spicy venison a palette pick up and the mango fish with smoked yoghurt simply delicious. I won't spoil the rest, but every dish is at another level on your taste buds. A delight. Bravo.

You don’t just go to Prithvi for the food (although the food is amazing) you go for the whole experience. The staff always make you feel like old friends and are very attentive but not overbearing.

We've visited twice, and have loved it both times. Food is impeccable, service and ambiance also perfect. This is without doubt one of the best restaurants in Cheltenham, would heartily recommend. Deserves a Michelin star, eat here before it gets one and becomes overbooked!

Dining at Prithvi feels like a real treat. This was our first visit and the experience was even better than we'd expected from its long-standing reputation. We chose the five-course taster menu and every dish was delicious, unexpected flavours and textures, and so beautifully presented. Service was excellent, warm and characterful, there's nothing aloof or pretentious about this fine dining experience!

We have visited Prithvi a few times and have always been delighted. Yesterday's meal was quite superb and neither of us can remember ever having eaten better. Service and atmosphere were of a comparably high standard.

New Years Eve Black Tie Event - such an enjoyable night- amazing food as always great atmosphere helped by the excellent singer. Very enjoyable night.

NYE was magic. The food featured some grande lux ingredients, but all the courses were fantastic. The artichoke veloute was a great elevation of a simple ingredient, but then there was the lobster grilled over hibachi coal as a counterpoint. The venison was incredible, the keema doughnut was a lovely surprise. Both puddings were stunning. Staff were so friendly, attentive and always eager and enthusiastic. Also when we asked questions they always were answered. The atmosphere is great, the venue has soft furnishings to soften the acoustics, so there was a warm but soft noise of the hubbub of the restaurant. The addition of the singer for the evening was a lovely surprise.

After 9 years , still one of our favourite places to dine. We live in Manchester and visit 3-4 times p.a. Always made to feel extremely welcome by all staff . Chose a la carte . Great to see one of our favourite red wines back on the list.

Suffers from being judged as an ‘Indian’ restaurant, inspired by ‘Indian’ ingredients certainly, but it attains an accolade in a genre of its own, exceptional ‘taste’ experience with an excellent team and modest owner.

Each course of the 7 course tasting menu was original, beautifully presented, immaculately served and utterly delicious (as were the 3 amuse bouches). We had sampled the tasting menu acouple of months previously (with the same enthusiasm) and no dish was repeated this time. A great experience.

Exceptional food, amazing wines, fabulous service. We always go for the taster menu it’s fantastic and if there is something you dont like you can always swap it out for an alternative. Thank you so much we will be back for our annual christmas visit. :-) Sadly we didnt make last year as our dog was very ill. :-)

As always, the food was spectacular when I had dinner at Prithvi a few days ago with a friend. We had the 5 course menu with wines. Service was attentive without being overbearing, the wine waiter in particular was excellent. Exquisite dishes, inventive presentation, well matched wines... heaven!

My second time to Prithvi and it was as good as the first. Food was glorious. Service was most excellent and the whole experience is a real treat. I’d highly recommend the tasting menu. Give yourself at least 4 hours to properly enjoy the whole experience and settle in for the night. The staff make you feel very welcome and aren’t afraid to add a touch of humour to proceedings, which as a table of 6 we loved. It’s not an intimidating, serious atmosphere - it’s an inclusive, friendly one. Really appreciate everything the team did to make us feel welcome and looked after. All the staff seemed happy to be working there which was lovely to witness and you could taste the passion and thought that had gone into the presentation and ingredients of the food. Every bite was meticulously planned and the textures were incredible. The flavours were such a delight. Thank you.

We had a lovely evening at Prithvi, receiving a warm welcome when we arrived. The restaurant is beautiful and the dishes we were served were amazing. We opted for the 7 course tasting menu and enjoyed absolutely everything. We’ve been to a few fine dining spots before and this is definitely up there at the top. Already trying to find an excuse to return!

The customer service is excellent and the food is exquisite. A wonderful atmosphere, a lovely, luxurious feeling. The "snacks" between 3 courses make it feel so special and I paired my wine too. This is the second year on a row we've come for our wedding anniversary. We rebooked because we had such a great time last year. My only "criticism" is that quite a few if the dishes served were also served last year. This would put me off being a regular and felt a little less special

Was a truly wonderful dining experience. They looked after us really well. Providing us with the details of what each dish was and the wine that was paired with it. They catered for my gluten intolerance and explained the change clearly.

Family occasion for 9 in their private dining room. Food, service and atmosphere were all first class. We had the 7 course tasting menu, selecting our own drinks to accompany. Have not recommended any specific dish below as the tasting menu is selected by the resturant and each dish is unique. It is obviously not a budget evening out but the whole experience is worth it. Have also eaten in their general dining area in the past and can highly recommed them.

Absolutely perfect as always. We first dined at Prithvi 10 years ago and were so impressed that, although we live over an hour away, we've revisited multiple times over the years. Our latest visit was equally as exceptional. The staff are immaculately turned out and trained to the highest standard (akin to Le Manoir aux Quat' Saisons), the decor and ambience are wonderful, the food is divine (we had the fantastic 7-course taster menu) - the dishes are so delicate and beautifully presented, the mix of flavours are perfectly paired and set the taste buds alight. The only disappointment was that the evening came to an end! We need to start exploring all of Jay & Michael's other (JM Social) restaurants but it's so hard not to choose Prithvi every time we decide to visit Cheltenham! Can't wait to return.

Went for my first tasting menu experience. I am so glad we chose here, it tasted phenomenal. We fealt so good inside and the staff we're so amazing to us. Yes this more on the expensive side, the staff didn't make us feel bad or like we didn't belong. Probably the best waiting service i have received in my life. My wife doesn't have a good spice tolarence in general, here they had the correct amount. Enough there's a kick, but subtle enough to taste everything. To which I'm glad for because those flavours are exceptional. I know most of my comments were on how good the staff were, which is true. The food I cannot compliment enough though.

We had the set lunch menu. It was the second time we ate at this restaurant. Everything both times were top class, we will be returning.

One of the most enjoyable meals I have ever had. This was my first visit to Prithvi but my partner had been before - several years ago. It was a birthday treat, and wow...what a treat it was! Owner, Jay Rahman and his excellent chef Thomas Law should take credit for creating such a gastronomic gem in Cheltenham, which is now becoming a town full of Michelin quality places to eat. The 7-course tasting menu was stunning; covering the whole breadth of fish, meat and vegetarian dishes with subtle and unusual spice combinations. Take for example the biryani spiced goats' butter with the onion seed milk loaf; taking the ordinary to extraordinary. The Chettinad Cauliflower (black garlic, tamarind, puffed potatoes) was sublime with the crispy potato on top, hiding a stunning cauliflower puree/veloute below. And, the Chalk Stream Trout (curry beurre blanc, avruga caviar, pickled cucumber) with the just-cooked trout flesh married perfectly with curry spice and pickled veg. The food at Prithvi is imaginative, innovative, and cooked with precision and a deep knowledge of multiple styles. Truly amazing and worth a detour.

Wow!! This place is such an unexpected treasure. When you consider dining here, throw away all your preconceptions of Indian restaurants. Prithvi is very different. We dined here, early evening. Before arriving, we had already decided to eat off their 7-course "tasting" menu and we were not disappointed. This really should be called a 10-course tasting menu, with the selection of "snacks" that arrived first. The great beauty of this place is that not only are the portion sizes small enough to justify 10 courses, but the pronounced Asian/Indian/curry flavours are incredibly well woven into each dish. You can taste the spice. You can taste the curry. Unlike high street curry houses where the chilli heat of a dish can dominate, the dishes at Prithvi are delicate, refined, and flavourful, without requiring you to grab the nearest glass of iced water! Our snacks included crispy choux pastry, beef tartare, and charcoal bamboo! And if that wasn't intriguing enough, the gentle combinations of spice and smoke and salty caviar are just extraordinary. Even the onion seed milk loaf (with biryani spiced goats' butter) got me thinking. There was a background taste that I couldn't put my finger on. It was pleasant and unusual at the same time, and it reminded me of childhood medicine, But wow, it was great! The Chettinad Cauliflower (with black garlic, tamarind, puffed potatoes) was another absolute treat! The crispy puffed potatoes on top, covered a beautifully soft cauliflower puree, which had a stunning spicy, lemony taste. A brilliant combination! We enjoyed a bottle of Salemi Pinot Gris from New Zealand, which paired well with all the dishes leading up to the Cornbury park Venison (roast loin, aloo keema bhuna, smoked beetroot, blackberry), with which we enjoyed a fruity but full-ish bodied Italian Sangiovese. The Pineapple Sorbet (coriander, chaat masala, basmati rice) probably had the greatest contrast of flavours (pineapple and coriander) but it was very refreshing and you could still enjoy the individual flavours; separately and mixed. Prithvi is not your standard Indian restaurant; the range of dishes and the pricing will clearly show that. So, its somewhere to go for a treat (if you have either of the tasting menus) or more regularly if you choose to eat off their a la carte menu.

Not been for a while, We had the 5 course taster menu, which was a joy, fantastic food combinations. The spices were subtle but built up to a lovely heat. The food was so light, things that looked stodgy was like eating featherweight food. I dont know how they got the bread so light and airy. I dont normally like puddings but the strawberry mascarpone was delicious, not too sweet either. Drinks on the expensive side like most restaurants of today. The only downside is the terrible jazzy music in the background - please change it!

Five course banquet with two friends. Never fails to impress and delight. Each dish is a work of art to look at, expertly described and then surprises with its flavours and contrasting textures. The venison was my highlight. By far the best eating in Cheltenham.

Although prithvi claims to be an indian restaurant the actual amount of Indian influence is not much. A venison dish with blackberry and beetroot and a jus although very nice is not made Indian by adding basmati rice ! An ox cheek tortellini is not made Indian by adding some Indian seasoning . The chalk strewn trout was beautifully cooked in a curry beurre blanc but the sauce was so overpowering you couldn’t taste the trout. Everyone was cooked beautifully apart from the pasta which was to thick and over worked but it isn’t an Indian restaurant.

Thanks to Jay and his fabulous team for yet another wonderful dinner at Prithvi. As well as sumptuous food, the eye for detail in servicdd Ed makes it second to none.

The lunch menu is phenomenal value for money. £32 for two courses but also includes three amuse-bouche and a delicious homemade bread and butter, just another £5 to also include a dessert. Cocktails are excellent and the wine list is very good. We'll certainly be back but for dinner next time to try the 7 course tasting menu. Not sure how Prithvi doesn't haven't a Michelin star yet.

The food was amazing, a riot of flavours in your mouth but not too overpowering either. The mood lighting made it a little dark in our booth making it difficult to see the colour of our food, but apart from that the people were amazing and really friendly staff.

As usual, a fantastic meal and service at Prithvi. We went for the tasting menu, however, I opted for the 'wine flight' and it was very, very disappointing! At £90, I could have bought a nice bottle of wine but instead I was served some very ordinary and obscure stuff, 2 of which were completely undrinkable. Please review your offering and provide more palatable wines.

Prithvi is THE most SENSATIONAL restaurant. From the warm welcome on arrival to the best possible service throughout the meal, we felt relaxed immediately. There was not a spare seat in the house and it is not hard top understand why. The cocktails were well blended. The food was incredible and an absolute feast for the tastebuds. Highly recommended.
