AVOID THIS PLACE Waited 40 mins for food before leaving. I even asked for food to be changed to takeaway. The staff were not bothered at all. Every other table was served ahead of us, including those who arrived after. Why would they care, I paid up front, so now I'm left £30 out of pocket and myself and two children are left hungry. I want to support local businesses but not at the expense of poor service!!

I love Tynemouth, and This is a cafe that has been around for a long time and is loved by the locals. It has a nice relaxing atmosphere there. The cakes and foods are delicious. We would go more often if they had better heating system in winter. It's a cafe that I want to stay here forever.

Nice location and fairly busy. Service at counter was polite and welcoming. However, delay in receiving ordered breakfast was disappointing. It contained 4 pairs of items - sausages, bacon, fried eggs, fried bread - it lacked variety. The toast came with butter unexpectantly buried underneath. For their listed top breakfast, I can't say this was value for money. Nor did it give much of a wow factor. The cake selection is very good, as is the range of hot drinks offered.

Having read other good reviews of this cafe we decided to try it out. Unfortunately our experience differed from previous reviews. After ordering two breakfasts one regular one veggie we endured a 45min wait for the food to arrive. I can understand places are under pressure but what made it more frustrating was the complete lack of communication between front of house staff and kitchen staff. Our long wait was only acknowledged after we queried when our food was coming. (This was at the 40min wait stage). Also we were served our hot drinks straight away after ordering which meant it was freezing cold by the arrival of the food. (They did agree to re-fill our teapot with hot water) When the food did eventually arrive the server seemed totally unaware of what they were serving. Seems a lack of training and information given to floor staff. In terms of food itself it was fine but the disastrous service left a sour taste. I could not recommend this establishment.

This is the first time we have been to this cafe and it won’t be the last it is our new favourite place in Tynemouth. It was the end of a Saturday afternoon and they were very busy so we waited a little while to be served but it didn’t matter as it is so good. There is a good selection of cakes and snacks and everything is clearly made from scratch. We had a brilliant blackcurrant and hazelnut gluten-free cake and my tea was served in a china cup and saucer which makes it feel more special. We will be back to try the other things on the menu, and another good thing is they were still serving after 4:30 pm on a Saturday unlike other Cafes in the area that seem to prefer to close far too early.

Came here yesterday with my two young daughters (5) and (7) as we had been in Tynemouth and they were really hungry and thought it was best to get them fed instead of driving home and making something.. 40 minutes later our food arrived!!! We only ordered pancakes (for my girls to share as the waitress said they were big portions - which they weren't) and a sausage bun! Both were appalling. Sausages over cooked/burnt - and the pancakes I asked to come with fruit not realising fruit was frozen strawberries. The service wasn't the best, no one apologised about the wait nor seemed to care. I even asked how long the food would take and the girl just came back and said yours is next. No apology, not nothing. Upon paying the waitress didn't even ask how everything was. The place is looking grubby and run down. It's such a shame as we get a lot of tourists visiting our local area and the local cafes could be SO much better! I think the priory cafe should just stick to coffee and cakes (which did look amazing and my kids asked for) and if the food hadn't taken so long we may have sampled them. I hate leaving negative reviews but really I just want to warn other people about the wait for food and the service. This hasn't been the first time and I keep going back and giving it a chance but I won't be from now on

Priory Café is an unconventional but genial friendly café serving beverages, pastries and cakes, breakfasts, and lunches. Order at the counter where you normally pay after ordering but sometimes, if for example it’s busy, you may be asked to return and pay after you have finished. The usual selection of coffees is made by an efficient cheerful friendly barista and food is cooked in a small kitchen while scones, cakes etc. are all homemade. A selection of cold drinks is available and you may buy an alcoholic drink if you wish. The main menu is written in chalk on the wall. The café is closed on Mondays. Prices are reasonable and may be lower than average. There is additional seating outside on the pavement for when the weather is appropriate. Blankets are offered for cold days in winter. There is a single toilet, albeit small. Wi-Fi can be accessed. Tables may be reserved, a practice that I disapprove of because, in my opinion, not only is it inefficient but it also causes unnecessary disappointment when the remaining tables are full, and one is unable to stay even though there may be several empty tables empty but reserved. At busy times, due to the size of the kitchen, there can be a considerable wait for cooked food. Take-aways are possible and an external buffet can be ordered by local businesses. The café may be reserved in its entirety for events.

Absolutely tiny, grubby and next to the open kitchen door. Other customers commented on it too. We stopped in on a Sunday morning for coffees and an egg and bacon bap…not complicated. They were moderately busy but a table was available without waiting and there were 4 staff on. This should have been more than sufficient for a place of this size. The coffees took 20 minutes to arrive and the baps took 45 minutes. The sausage was undercooked and greasy. The egg was ok. The staff were surly and I got an eye roll when I asked for a glass when I ordered a pelligrino orangata. £20 for this experience. Steer clear of this disaster.

Cute quirky little cafe, not far from sea front. Nice decor inside, staff friendly They do all day breakfast, which we had, I had a sausage sarnie and my friend full English. When we ordered we were told it would be 10 minutes, which we were fine with, however it took nearly 25 minutes. We would have been happy to wait 25 minutes as we knew food is cooked to order, they just had to say that it would be 25 minutes. (This why I knocked a star off). If they said 25 mins when ordering, i would have given five stars When food arrived it was fresh, amd tasted great. We ordered tea and hot chocolate after, the flapjack was super tasty and you could tell this was made today.

We have visited on many occasions on visits to family in Tynemouth, but this is my first review, mainly in response to some poor ones here. This cafe is always busy, which says something already, but on each occasion we have been ( always for breakfast) we have had good service and excellent food. The breakfasts are cooked to order, served fresh and hot, so sometimes there is a wait. However the coffee is perfect and we’re happy to take a leisurely breakfast. The 2 waitresses on this occasion ( Saturday around 10.30) did not stop moving and yet smiles were plentiful. Excellent, as usual.

First, let me start by saying that I know there's now an abundance of places between Whitley Bay and North Shields where you can get a good breakfast these days, several of them are frequently hailed as 'the best' on social media posts asking where to go for a good breakfast at the coast... but let me assure you with full confidence- there is NO finer breakfast anywhere on the North East coast than this. Both quality of ingredients & execution. The Longsands breakfast with homemade sweetcorn fritters and Stornaway black pud. And not a sprig of wilted peashoots in sight. With fried bread & a jug of tinned tomato juice. Washed down with a hazelnut latte in my case. Food of the Geordie Gods.

Lovely food it’s just a shame what we’ve witnessed. We’ve visited for a few weeks but after today we won’t be back. A member of staff went outside to have a cuddle of a puppy and when she re entered the cafe didn’t sanitise her hands and walked through the back into the kitchen. Another member of staff arrived to start her shift we assume and again didn’t sterilise her hands when entering the cafe, hung her coat up and went behind the counter with her phone ready to serve customers still without sanitising her hands. How are customers expected to stay safe and hygienic if the staff can’t do it themselves. Also it appears that the track and trace system which should have been implemented weeks ago has just came into operation. I haven’t seen it in other cafes but is it common practise for staff to eat and drink in full view of customers behind the counter then serve customers their food?

I had the priory breakfast (which was huge and my husband ended up eating some of) which was great especially the bacon and the fried eggs were still lovely and dippy! My husband had a bacon sandwich but could resist a side of sweetcorn fritters which were gorgeous and a lovely change. The only thing I would say is that the tables were not “clean” there were crumbs on ours and the one next to us had lots of crumbs etc on it. Well the food is good - especially the soups, but the service can best be described as lousy. Tables dirty and not cleaned. Food choice is good and reasonably priced. Clearly a loyal or desperate clientele. We went on a Wednesday lunchtime so it wasn’t a weekend rush. What a shame

Just been here for first time. Service appalling, tables left uncleared, waited 45 mins for toasty, quiche, chips n salad. Crockery and cutlery not clean.Several people came in and left without being served or seated. Had to ask for table to be wiped. Basically chaos. Wouldn't recommend.

Sadly the coffee shop we usually use had just closed so we tried this place.Their was only one girl serving, however she made hard work of it..We had to wait ages to order and ages and ages before we were served it had got to the point we were on the point of walking out! What we had was mediocre. Would you be tempted to return most certainly NOT...........

I’ve been here twice and on both occasions the food has been top notch . As they cook everything fresh you do have to wait , but it’s worth it in my opinion. I had corn beef pie coleslaw and chips all homemade and my daughter had poached eggs ham and cheese on toast . To follow we shared a piece of chocolate cake . We took home a cheese and fruit scones which was as good as the last time I had them . Will definitely be back .

Visited with my wife and gran for a brunch. We had 2 soups a wrap and a selection of cakes. The soups and the scones were excellent as were the cakes. The wrap was average but still very tastey. The only issue we had was it all took a long time as it was so busy. We waited 40 minutes for our food, luckily we weren’t in a hurry and were happy to wait, but it was well worth the wait.

An excellent traditional café, relaxing, friendly and a community hub for the town of Tynemouth. Away from the hustle of the tourist area, this little place is run by enthusiastic, capable staff in a sort of relaxing unhurried and timeless way which keeps you in a comfortable mood. The food is home-made, well prepared and honest; the range changing day by day offers cake and coffee or tea, a snack, substantial lunch or classic full English breakfast (the sausage tasty and one of the best) choose from set or build it from the usual staple items offered. Very nice, quiet, traditional café to while away some time, meet friends and be satisfied. Great value for money.
