Crusoe's in North Tyneside

Its good that its on the beach, you can get a beer but its pretty poor, no atmosphere, its just a room with seats and tables, no vibe... hard to explain but check it out for yourselves. Service was shocking. Cakes are really good, saved it from a 1 star unwhelming review.

Went there for a bacon and blackpudding ciabatta "served all day". "Oh, we don't serve black pudding after 12 o'clock." So, they're "going to take it off the menu". (That'll fix it, then.) It's a great place with lovely food and fantastic sweets. Can't help thinking they are missing a trick, though. They are at the start (or end) of the Coast to Coast (C2C) cycle route and no bike racks?

Great view of the seafront. I ordered a coffee and they charged me extra for oat milk (but the extra charge wasn’t advertised). They put soya milk in my coffee instead without asking which was dangerous as I am allergic. Thank god I was watching. After all that the coffee wasn’t even good. Toilets were dirty

Beautiful little coffee place right at the beach. It was really nice to enjoy our Cappuccinos and Latte Macchiatos on the terrace and watching people bodysurf in the freezing sea. Make sure to have a pleasant stroll alpng the beach while at it. The Crusoe’s Tynemouth have a great variety of drinks.

Love this spot for a coffee on the beach but until recently we were sat in the cold with our dogs on a terrace grabbing a drink. Now that they have opened a "dog friendly" area we can pop in, warm up, enjoy a leisurely coffee or two, treat ourselves to breakfast and have a and "doggy sausage". Brilliant idea, the area that dogs are allowed wouldn't normally be accessed by diners as it's at the far end of the restaurant so if you don't like dogs they are well away from you. The food is really good, service is fantastic and well priced too. Thank you!

Great coffee and egg and bacon muffin with smiling service

Whether we caught them on a bad day, I’m not sure, but our experience here was poor. Poor portions, stale bread, soggy batter, undercooked fish, poor presentation, miserable server, expensive. We took our fish back and, to be fair, were met with a kind response. No issues. The fish came back out looking better, batter still too soggy though. This time though we had a little garnish and a lemon wedge. Two things missing from our other identical orders. Presentation does make a difference. Anyway, the fish was well cooked this time and very fresh on the inside. So points for that. A tiny bit more care and this would have been a totally different review I’m sure. The experience was too expensive to be forgiven though. Good luck.

Makeover has ruined the place. Menu is limited, and the food quality is poor. It used to be a great place. Miserable staff, more interested in their mobile phones and each other than the customers. Uncleared tables make the place look very untidy.

Lovely lunch. Vegetarian and Vegan Sandwich was delishous. The dogs also enjoyed their biscuit treats provided by a member of staff.

Great cafe/fish and chip restaurant on the beach. Tasty and fresh fish, and friendly service. Be aware that it's a little on the expensive side, but not excessively. Also that if you're seated inside near the door, it can be quite draughty, and that the toilets are a little cramped. Otherwise recommended for a casual lunch or a coffee stop.

We just visited for a coffee and cake stop. The choice of cakes was very tempting, but unfortunately I made a bad choice. Despite looking delicious, the chocolate muffin was very dry and flavourless, and was difficult to finish as it was like chewing foam. However, my partner's blondie was delicious and drinks were lovely so I suspect I just made an unlucky choice. I'd return for the great beach views and nice atmosphere, but I'd avoid the muffins in future.

Called in after a visit to Tynemouth aquarium and a nice walk on the windswept beach. Tea and cake was a good price and the staff were lovely. Would definitely go again for something more substantial. Great views of the beach from the huge windows.

Great place, any place with irn bru gets a good rating from me!! Would love to come back here to try out the food. The vibe on the inside and outside were lovely and the waitress came around and gave my dogs some sausages which they were certainly happy about!! They loved the attention.

A very popular place, with lots of swimmers, dog walkers and beach goers. Nice comfortable seating and a very stylish design. Great atmosphere. Friendly and helpful staff. We had a lovely breakfast/brunch and piping hot coffee. Amazing views across the beach, grab a window table if you can. Highly recommended.

Again one of the places you need to visit while in Tynemouth, it's always busy, food is amazing and the service is great, just a great location right on the beach.

I couldn't believe when, with a queue out the door, all 8 people in our group got served drinks within 5 mins and food within 15. I was bracing myself for a good long wait in the queue and for food. These people have their process down and there's loads of space to sit. Kids menu has a good choice as well. Truly fantastic!

I had a really disappointing visit. Apparently they have a strict cut off of 12 for breakfast, regardless of queue. So all the people who'd be queuing for half an hour suddenly had to change their order. So I had to leave the queue and go and ask what people wanted, which put me to the back again. Half an hour later, "no we haven't got that". Oh. Asked for something else. "Not that either". FFS. There are chalk boards right there on the counter, they really could have told us. Food was decent. The muffins look better than they taste, but are ok. The coconut macaroon was great. Lovely hot chocolate. The interior is like a late 90s cruise ship, for some reason, but seems to work.

We had a lovely breakfast here, the food was great and it's a lovely place to sit with a great view. We received excellent customer service, yes the staff are young but I found them to be very helpful, one waitress in particular couldn't be more helpful. There is also very clear signage about how to order. Reading some of the reviews here I think people seem to expect Ritz service from veteran waiting staff trained in Paris. It's a beach cafe, treat it as such and you won't be disappointed.

My partner and I had our civil partnership at the Civic Centre in Newcastle and then headed to Crusoe's for the after party. It was perfect. The staff we approachable and accommodating, the food was great and the DJ played every song we asked for. The venue itself is beautiful - exactly what we wanted for a casual, summer evening wedding party. We couldn't have asked for anything more. Thank you to everyone working that night who helped make our day so special.

Similar experience to the previous review. Lots of staff but the majority were just messing about. The coke syrup had ran out but they still tried to serve us light brown water (clearly not cola). No one was able to rectify this and we ended up eating our meal and leaving without our drinks. Really poor customer service and a real shame as the food is good and previous service was good.

Went with a group of friends for weekday drinks on a sunny evening. Lovely setting but the young girls serving were rude and it took at least 20minutes for our drinks to come when it was quiet. We were told several times while waiting that it was last orders but our drinks were still come. A lot of young kids sat around drinking their own drink as well as being served before us. Very disappointing as such a lovely place to go on sunny evening.

We heard good things about Crusoes and were on Longsands, so seemed a perfect fit.Unfortunately not.There are two ends - the 'hatch' and the 'street food'. We didn't want the standard fish & chips that day, so went to the street food end.There were plenty of tables and seating, and several free inside. There was no obvious way to go, no 'greeter', no signage about how to order etc, so we just walked inside. Made my way to the bar and picked up a menu. Asked if I could order for takeaway, and the server said to order to the table and then take it away, so we did.It was only 4 dishes but took ages. At least 30minutes. Seeing this is meant to be 'street food' - and it was simple dishes I can't understand why it took so long.There were loads of staff, but clearly they don't have an efficient system.The food itself was disappointing. The chips were fine, and the coleslaw was quite nice. But the lamb was completely under-seasoned and really fatty. The calamari is only available in children's portions but was pretty good. The prawns were also ok.So basically - ok food, but a terribly long wait and chaotic ordering/service system.

We had been going to Crusoes pretty regularly throughout the summer due to the incredible location, sometimes just for drink but food too. Unfortunately the service has deteriorated with every visit and last night was a joke.On the regular you expect to wait upwards of half an hour to even get someone to ask what you’d like to drink and every time we’ve had to go say “can we order”. We kept trying, thinking it would be better next time, just busy etc but oh dear ☹️We booked a table for 8pm for food and by 8:30 we were still sat, to have multiple staff wandering around, messing about amongst themselves, ignoring us, and only upon listening to them talking amongst themselves did we gather they’d had to stop serving food, so we left in order to go somewhere that would serve us and actually communicate with us.The fact that 99% of the staff are extremely young with obviously no experience or training really does not help, there is no structure and they have no idea what customer service is. This place is stunning, the location and food is amazing but the service is embarrassingly poor - I beg you Crusoes, PLEASE hire some experienced waiting staff & get some structure in place because the horrific service will run your business into the ground!!! You can’t just rely on the location - beautiful as it is - you should take pride in giving a good customer experience too, this is coming from someone who wants to enjoy your beautiful restaurant, not a Karen with an axe to grind ❤️ Sort it out!!!

Cocktails were clearly from a carton and when joking with staff they admitted it. We asked for a long island iced tea and the waitress said it's not on the menu but on the till, we were left for 20 mins and when I asked a waiter he said that drink is not available. The waitress was called over and she said no it's not, to my response of did you not think we should have been informed and she seemed disinterested. The plce and service overall was terrible and if it wasn't for the lovely scenery of the beach I'd not go near the place again.

Popped in for cocktails Brandy and coffee at the end of a long day. Nice staff good service in fact all good will return for food but did have some chocolate muffins to go wow they were good. Great location as well right on the beach

Been here a couple of times because of the location, offering table service on the beach. Both times it’s been very disorganised with tables left for ages without being cleared literally until they are desperate for a table. Ordered breakfast no porridge, avocado was too hard to serve! Great! I heard a lady sitting at a table which someone had just left and asked for it to be cleared the response was I won’t be able to do that for another 10 mins! Shocking! Every time a staff member went back inside there hands were empty, surely you clear and take a tray back in with you! They need to get the basics right. I get the feeling the staff don’t want to be there! Which is a shame.

Can’t fault the food or service here. We had a large group outside and the staff were so accommodating with complicated orders and loads of rounds! So helpful and easy going. The food and portions are amazing and the atmosphere is perfect for celebrating outside safely with friends and family. It’s a total all day venue from quick coffees and cake, breakfast, fish and chips through the day and great food from the grill later on. Love it.

Unfortunately I experienced very bad customer service from Crusoe’s and the women who served me. My friend in front of me ordered a hot drink and I hadn’t decided what I wanted yet. When it came to my turn, I then ordered some chips and a hot drink - the woman who served me was very rude and was annoyed at the fact that I hadn’t told her in advance I was ordering a hot drink when my friend had ordered one. I could understand her frustration, however if I had of known what I was going to order, I would have told her. I was a bit taken aback by her attitude and I felt it was an unnecessary comment to make. Maybe she was having a bad day, but either way, I felt it reflected badly on Crusoe’s and would put me off from ordering again.

Exceed expectations - I took two friends here over the bank holiday weekend when the sun was shining. They had both never been before, although I’ve been a couple of times now and I’m glad to see they were impressed and the food was amazing. The staff were lovely and the owner was extremely hospitable and came over for a lovely chat. All in all it was a complete success, and exceeded my friends expectations and they will definitely be back. The food was fresh, tasty and didn’t take too long to arrive despite it being really busy. Lush!

The location/view are great, particularly on a nice day. The restaurant is pretty modern also but the staff are rude and the service is pretty shocking.The staff don’t appear to have allocated tables or even areas of tables to serve. There seemed to be plenty of staff on when I was there, certainly plenty for the number of customers but they were very reluctant to serve customers. Any request seemed to be a problem. They are all very young which I think might be the problem. There’s no leaders amongst them who can guide the inexperienced ones. Even simple things like asking for napkins after one of the waiters spilled coffee on our table. He said he would just get some, then wandered the opposite direction and started clearing tables. After 5-10mins I asked him again as he was rushing past. He looked at me like I had 2 heads, wandered off to the kitchen and returned with food for another table, then cleared some more tables. I had to ask a 3rd time for the napkins and again he just said “yeh no problem” before wandering off, stopping to chat with his colleagues for a bit. Served a couple other tables, before returning 10minutes or so with the napkins.I noticed that all of the staff had a similar demeanour, wandering g around avoiding eye contact with customers.The breakfast we ordered took over an hour to come and when it did, it was frozen. (It was pretty obvious that it had been made long ago and the waiting staff simply hadn’t brought it) I pointed it out to the next waiter to pass us, who took it away without saying a word. 10minutes later I asked a different waiter (because the one who took it away was no where to be seen). She then came back about 5-10minutes later with a breakfast that was definitely warm this time, but was missing bacon from the plate. I pointed it out to a passing waiter and she did apologise before taking it away to rectify. Another 10minutes later I asked a waitress to chase it up for me which she did and eventually came back with it. All the items were there this time but everything on the plate except the bacon were cold again. As it was about 90minutes by this point I just ate it as we’d had enough. I couldn’t eat the black pudding as it was undercooked.I had been in the same place the day before for lunch and dinner and the food was great I have to say. The service was similarly poor and I did over hear 2 other tables complaining to staff about how long they had been waiting and another about having asked for gluten free but was served the wrong thing.They really need some experienced waiting staff to organise things. Get them into segmented areas at least so they have an area of responsibility. And also to teach the younger ones some basic manners and customer service skills.Iso much potential but ruined by exceptionally poor service

Booked by calling two days before however there was no record of that. We were told to sit at table number 3 which we did. After 15 mins we noticed that other people coming in were being given menus at the door and we had none and other people were having their orders takenwho had arrived after us.. Asked a passing member of staff for menus and was asked bluntly if we were allocated to this table... said yes and she returned and plonked the menus down without a word. It was relatively busy half the indoor and outdoor areas taken up and the staff looked sick to death. Someone came and took our order a bottle of wine a sausage sandwich and chips with gravy. The food arrived after a while but with no cutlery... had to ask for that and no condiments were offered or provided... the wine came about 10 mins after the food. While we were there there was no social distancing with people packed at the door to get in and the person looking after that front of house had no mask even though she was also walking around serving customers. The one way system was also ignored constantly with people leaving by the entrance. To cap it all off we watched a waitress/cleaner using a bright green cloth to clean multiple tables with no disinfectant and then wipe trays with the same cloth. Atrocious covid precautions I've given 1 star purely for the view. Would need dramatic improvement for me to consider going again.

Just tried the street food here and it was spot on! This place is located in a superb spot, overlooking the beach… the street food is unreal… staff were really friendly and welcoming… top marks!!! Awesome job!!!

Delightful staff, delicious food, perfect location - there’s not much to add, except that the portions are generous and it’s extremely good value. Stayed in Tynemouth for 3 nights, ate here for 2 of them and had breakfast here too. We had dinner on the terrace on an evening and had breakfast in deckchairs on the beach. The staff are lovely and when I asked for my evening meal to be served without fries they took the trouble to ask what I would like to replace them, serving a really nice salad and extra flatbread though I wasn’t expecting anything extra. I highly recommend this place, loved it.

Was strange from the start we were given 2 menus then told when we tried to order that we could only order from one menu? We were sat in a cold shaded spot so when we noticed there was a table in the sun free we asked to move and was told no! Food arrived as we were half way through we eventually had to ask for our drinks and the waitress looked at us like we were stupid...food looks good but its really not that great for the price. Wouldn't go out of my way to go again

Just been to Crusoes Street Food and tried their chicken wrap absolutely delicious well worth a visit. The staff are very helpful and obviously enjoy their jobwhich made our visit an all round good experience and its dog friendly. If you're in the area give it a try

Friendly welcome, indoor and outdoor seating available today but from tomorrow outdoors only. Full table service, efficient and friendly staff. Covid Safety measures in place. Toilets clean and in good repair. Large portions and tasty food. Outdoor seating is partly on the terrace with heat lamps and partly on the sand with beach chairs. Normal menu and street food menus available. Serves alcohol, hot and cold food. Good range. A little expensive at £27 for two meals and a hot drink each, otherwise it would have been 5 stars

Sandwich for a fiver! Dry uninspiring and terrible presentation. Staff are rude, no PPE worn. They think as there a monopoly on food down there they can do what they want. Stay away!

This place has a lovely atmosphere, attentive staff and great food. we ordered the fish and chips and pesto chicken Panini which also came with chips.. My fiance very much enjoyed his fish it was huge and he couldn't finish it all. The pesto chicken was nice and succulent. The Chips on both plates could have been hotter, other than that, everything was spot on. We will definitely be back.

Upon arrival we waited 20 minutes to be seated, 10 more minutes to order drinks and food. After waiting 30 more minutes my order had to be changed after waiting a further 20 minutes food arrived. My partners fish finger sandwich and sweet potato fries was stone cold and my soup and cheese sandwich was completely inedible, the soup had a thick layer of skin over it and the bread was dry and stale with some grated cheese falling out of it. We were asked to pay before food arrived so no member of staff tended to your table after that to check on you or offer any kind of service.

Wow what a find. On the beach watching surfers (we were inside) it was cold out. Plenty of room to sit outside with heaters. Unfussy honest and very popular with locals. Food good my husband said it was the best fish he’s ever had. Just good old fashioned food. Not many places serve a good HOT mug of tea. The muffins to die for I had GF one it was amazing. Staff are lovely very friendly and never stop. It was Covid safish. We were a bit dubious especially as it’s a high Covid case area. But we were careful. I had jacket potato it was just ok. Being GF not a lot of options apart from the muffins. But defo will come back.

This really is one of our favourite places to go. The location is brilliant, right on the beach and the fact we can sit outside under the heaters is even better.The staff are always so friendly and the service is brilliant!We love the food, from the breakfasts, to the muffins, to the food in street food end...couldn’t fault it and it’s all really well priced! Amazing place!

Staff were so rude , left us sat in the cold waiting ages- kept asking if we can order and were fully blanked by numerous staff. Definitely will not be returning

Another great visit to crusoes. Sunny sunday morning at tynemouth great coffee and the best muffins in the north east. Very good service very covid safe and friendly staff.

Great spot even on a damp day. Some seating under a proper cover outside and pretty good covid controls inside. Had a sausage sandwich and coffee each - nice to get out even when it’s raining.

Visited today with my wife. The food was very nice and tasty with excellent coffee.Service was very quick and pleasant.However the Gents toilet was very smelly which is not very nice for a cafe.Also think they could arrange a better exit rather than having to walk in soft sand on the beach

The food was lovely - could not fault it however the rules and regulations in the restaurant induced agitation in us. There was plenty of space in the restaurant and outside to keep people separate so no need for the over-fuss the staff were creating in there. You had to walk through the restaurant wearing a mask just to sit at your table and they were strict on this at door however we were exempt so thankfully spared that. The service suffered due to it and we waited a while for the food. If anyone defends the restaurant, do not blame the government as each individual establishment sets out how their restaurant is going to be and this 1 in particular is over the top. You are jumped on at the door. Spacing, hygiene and some contact details I believe are the current requirements until the 24th.

Arrived at 8am this morning for breakfast as the opening hrs stated 8am for opening only to find the place still closed very annoying !!

Had breakfast twice at Crusoe's both of which were very good and reasonably priced. It is simply decorated to give a beach feel.One small criticism was that the website still showed it opening at 0800 on Saturday when it did not open until 0900 and no one thought to come out and inform the queue of customers (Covid was given as the reason)

Went to Crusoe's Street food on a Sunday lunch. Easy to get a table (during busy times). Super easy to organise during COVID-19. Great food/fish and well priced (think a cheaper Rileys Fish Shack). Super quick service. New must go to place for food in the North East

Visited as part of the help to eat out scheme and food was great. Decided to take the family on a Saturday evening and the quality of the meat was terrible. All chicken on the menu is chicken thigh not breast, none of which is noted on the menu.

Called in with my wife while visiting the area. Lovely setting on the beach, cracking breakfast and the covid guidelines followed really well. Very friendly and on the ball staff. Will call in again next time we are up.

A brilliant restaurant on Tynemouth beach with a fantastic view of the golden sandy beach. The restaurant was very busy. We opted to sit outside but the only tables left outside were deck chairs with a table on the beach. Lovely. There were two different menus one was more traditional food the other was creole street food. I had a chicken and bacon and egg mayonnaise sandwich on toasted bread. It was huge I had to eat it separately. There was salad with the sandwich but I didn't like the taste of the salad because it had chopped up mint in it. My friend had a wrap. To drink my friend had a very tasty looking hot chocolate with cream and I had a lemonade. We were very happy enjoying the food and the view until it started to rain and we had to go inside. Nevertheless we will be back.

Amazing location and a fantastic experience. This café/bar sits right on Longsands beach and is perfect for people watching. The food is excellent and we have a vast array of drinks. The staff are very professional, friendly and well organised, nothing is too much trouble.The Corvid organisation is also excellent and the staff are to be complimented for this.We absolutely love this place and go back time and time again, when you’re sitting outside looking out to the beach and sea, you just feel so relaxed. They are literally on many places that can match this, give it a try you certainly won’t be disappointed!

We only called in for a coffee, but were made very welcome, and were given a 2 hour slot on the deck stairs right on the beach on a sunny morning - perfect location. It was busy, I guess due to the lovely weather, but it was very well organised with one way system, sanitizer, and social distance markings, and spaced out tables inside and outside.Food looked amazing, but as we had just had breakfast at our hotel we had to give it a miss, and stick to our coffees instead.This place was recommended to us by some local relatives, and also by our neighbours who know the area, so it is clearly well known, and a “must see and do” place.

I've never done this, but I felt compelled to write a review straight away after visiting this wonderful place. We went here with our two young boys in the middle of a storm, on a busy Tuesday when the 'Eat Out To Help Out' offer was on, so expected the place to be rammed and be lucky to get in. It was, but they managed to squeeze us in.The staff throughout were so, so friendly. They couldn't do enough for us. From adviaigtua on the menu, to the guy who took our order at the counter and the server who kept having to go and get more sauce for the ketchup-mad kids, I just wanted to say how much we appreciated everything. The food was all fresh and it came out super quick too. The kids portions were huge and the adults really generous too.I appreciate how difficult it must be for everybody working in this industry at the moment, so to receive praise when it's so richly deserved is the very least us customers can do. Thank you for making our visit so memorable. We will be back!

This restaurant has, and is our haven from June, as it opened after lockdown, our twice weekly walk along the beautiful beach ending in breakfast at Crusoes, on the South end of Longsands.The English breakfast, nicely displayed on the plate, is more than plenty, bought to us by a friendly server, with a smile( very rare these days). The outside eating area is quite large with electic heaters above the tables, most welcome for evening dining. I noticed tables being promptly cleared away and thoroughly cleaned on customers leaving. Particular attention to childrens high chairs.The recent addion to the menu is "Street Food" served in a seperate area, opens at noon, tables are bookable.The "track n trace" is thorough when ordering a meal, hand sanitiser readily available. Their are no negative comments about Carusoes and we will continue to visit.

Visited Crusoes last week and sat in the sunshine on the sunny terrace. Food half price thanks to the government from Mon to Weds. had sandwiches and cappuccino with my partner. Efficient service. Plenty of choice on menu. Good choice of street food. Will return. Great value.

Went with family and got seated outside having come up from beach. just about to go and order and staff member comes up and rudely asks us to vacate seat for someone queing inside who's apparantly had the table. No signs up stating you cant walk up and get table from beach- not even a queue to get in. Nothing on table to indicate it was taken despite sitting there for 20mins or so sorting kids out. No social distancing measures in place at all. Toilets disgusting barely cleaned and was there for first opening. Rudely spoken to making a massive scene in front of everyone making us look like criminals. Woman who apparantly had the table (4 seater by herself) crept up and smirked as we left as never had the decency to come and say anything herself. Wont be back there in hurry.

Visited on Saturday understandably there was possibly going to be teething problems but it was chaotic. On arrival there was one lovely girl at the door serving on the bar and running to tables and seating people and doing a million things at once. There was about 4 staff all in uniform sat near the entrance looking over but taking it easy wether they had finished was unclear however they chose to ignore the building queue. Perhaps if the staff finished changed out of uniform people might not get the wrong idea as me and my friend noticed them all sat down and the people behind in the queue were also pointing out that they were just being ignored. We were sat outside at a table which I cleaned myself as the previous occupants plates were just moved and the table left unclean. We waited 15 minutes for a menu then a further 25 minutes before being told to order at the bar. We ordered food and took a seat we then waited a further 45 minutes for food and it arrived cold and we moved indoors. No social distances between tables and then when we were eating the food nobody checked to see if it was ok and again more staff were sat near to us drinking pints and discussing how dreadful the day was. Again perhaps a suggestion to avoid looking unprofessional maybe don’t encourage staff on a busy shift to sit drinking whilst in uniform as it sends out the wrong message. We finished and as I left went to the gents toilets and it was around 6.30pm and discovered a dreadful mess inside there was toilet roll all over and in the cubicle a plastic packet with powder in. There were still children in the venue and I mentioned it to a member of staff who just said “ok” and walked away. When it’s a tricky time and we are all doing so well following guidelines it was a shame to see such a lack of care for people’s wellbeing and health and a shame to see such a mess in the toilets. There was such a high number of staff in however all apart from some lovely young women perhaps two at most. None seemed to be doing much other than sitting drinking and ignoring customers. It’s a beautiful venue but the lack of care and organisation is disappointing. I hope these issues get addressed.

Lunch with the family before surfing. Excellent food which was cooked to perfection ( for me king prawns) and fast service! Highly recommend. 😃

Right by the beach, not outrageously priced, tables sensibly spaced, staff made an effort to find tables quickly. My kipper the 'special' wasn't all that good but managed to eat it!
