Went for Sunday lunch . Bought the dinner for 4 and couldn’t not fault the amount or quality of ingredients Unfortunately the meal was cold and the added extra was undercooked and had to be returned . Have been a few times and to be fair this is the first time it was below par . It was Easter Sunday , but they weren’t busy , so not sure why the issue occurred .

I can’t stop thinking about the Sunday roast beef! We chose to stop for lunch on our way through Newark and was treated to the most delicious Sunday lunch I’ve ever had! Everything was seasoned to perfection, the beef slightly pink. Cauliflower cheese side dish was definitely worth ordering. The staff were really welcoming and attentive and the pub itself has a lovely atmosphere. If I ever find myself in Newark, I won’t hesitate to stop here again.

Great cozy pub with lots of history inside, the service was superb, all the staff were kind a friendly, ready to help with the menu. All cooked beautifully and tasted amazing. And the wine selection was amazing too. Definitely recommend!

As usual, a fantastic experience at The Rupert. My Son booked for Mothers Day and as you can imagine, it was somewhat 'packed out'. That being the case, the service, food and atmosphere delivered, as I would expect. My Son does quite a few 'Michelin **' in Europe and he commented that the food was 10/10, which from him, is a flipping compliment! Well Done to the Team...

Had a lovely afternoon with my hubby and grown-up children. Lovely old pub, lovely decor, and friendly people. However, today, Mothers Day, the food wasn't great. Prices were much inflated from their regular prices for the same things. The set menu was pretty easy/standard, various starters which we didn't have, roast dinner with a choice of meats, etc, or fish and chips. Gravy was sparce had to ask for more, roast potatoes were hard and none existent on husbands plate of food? The wait was long, 30 minutes plus.. The beef was very dry. Yorkshire puddings were burnt and a teaspoon of mash potatoes.was inadequate (i didn't want to spend several minutes taking pictures). Son had fish chips with 'mushy peas', which were actually petit pois! I opted for crumble after hearing another customer complaining of the measly slice of cheesecake being too stingy.. The crumble has to be the worst crumble I've ever had! It resembled random chunks of a dark granola on top of scorching hot apple, clearly microwaved and tasteless apart from cinnamon with the smallest possible scoop of ice cream I've ever witnessed, very disappointing. £33 for two courses.. I was really looking forward to it as well. I don't know what was going on today, but looking at other pics of the same meal, it seems something wasn't right.

Looking for a dog friendly pub in Newark, we chose the Prince Rupert over A N Other establishment because the menu looked marginally better. Table booked for a Wednesday lunchtime but when we arrived we were told that there was no fish and no steak! Ordinarily I would have politely cancelled and gone elsewhere but with two 80 year old grandmothers in tow this wasn't really an option so we stayed. What we ordered from the depleted menu (steak and ale pie, mushroom miso burger, panuozzo, flat iron chicken) was okay but at the end of the day it wasn't what we really wanted. And then just before our main courses arrived, the table behind us ordered fish and chips ! Bizarre. Couple of other points - I ordered the single easiest starter in the world (bread with olive oil) to tide me over because I was hungry but despite the fact the place wasn't particularly busy it took 25 minutes to arrive and only then after I reminded the waiter. Secondly, I fancied a healthy side dish to offset my sausage and stilton panuozzo with chips but there simply isn't one. Coleslaw is for people who pretend to eat vegetables and I dread to think what is used to make sticky red cabbage sticky. Cost £74 for 4 people (four mains, one starter, one pint, three lime and sodas) which isn't bad but we would probably have ordered desserts and possibly coffees as well (and tipped) if we hadn't felt a bit deflated by the experience. I'm afraid that next time we will be going to A N Other.

The building has lots of character, mind your head if you are eating upstairs, the ceiling on the site are is very low. The menu is varied with sufficient choice for everyone and the quality of the food was good. We were waiting quite a while for our main course to arrive although the waitress did apologise and said they were very busy. We were meeting friends and in no particular rush but it was at least a 25 minute wait which, having booked the table, I found excessive. The food was good with generous portions and we would visit again.

My friend halfway through her meal realised there was no Stilton on the salad but continued as she liked it. We mentioned the lack of the main ingredient when plates were collected. At no point did the staff member offer us anything or a discount. At the till we mentioned again about the lack of cheese, nothing. Went to ‘The Rupert’ for dinner on 27 Dec with family and friends. Our party increased from 6 to 9 so had to call up on the morning of the 27th to ask for a larger table. No issues whatsoever, the team were extremely accommodating. Arrived slightly ahead of time and were shown to our table. After a short while, our drinks orders were taken, and then quickly followed by our food orders - No beef and ale pie or cod loin. Gutted. Clearly they had been a popular choice that day. Thankfully there are plenty of other meals to choose from on their menu - and let me just say this, not one person in our group was disappointed with their meals. Absolutely delicious food and generous portions. My steak was very juicy and tasty and my wifes chicken pie was outstanding; the pie was filled to the brim and the pastry melted in the mouth. All-in-all a thoroughly enjoyable evening with family and friends made even better with the excellent food and service from the team at the Rupert.

Embarrassing I chose here to meet up with an old friend who didn't know Newark, used to have nice times and good food in this pub. The pub was busy and we explained we had booked the speakeasy bar for later in the evening but after being shown to our table we waited 40 minutes and then had to ask for our starters, service was very slow. Food was rather disappointing, 2 of our party, myself included, had no form of potato on our plate for our main meal even though the menu stated roast potatoes. I will somewhat disappointed with the reduction in food quality at the Prince Rupert compared to previous years when I have visited from Lincoln. I ordered a sirloin steak for £27, which considering it was clearly a bog standard one from a co-op packet, very small and overcooked for the 'medium to well done' that I asked for, was hugely overpriced. I was asked if the meal was ok by someone who carried on moving out of the door, before I actually had time to answer much other than that it was overcooked. Pleasant but clearly overstretched staff.

This is a bit of a hard one. I give it 2.5 stars - between ok and dislike. A bit of a hit or miss with the service of staff. I called to enquire about reservations after seeing that their calendar online (booking page) was blocked off. The women on the phone was curt, lots of sighing then said dismissivly that they are just doing walk-ins now. But when I arrived to the place, people in the queue had reservations. But luckily getting a seat upstairs doesn't seem to be a problem - which is the historic part of the pub so the perks of this place. And staff on the day was friendly enough. However, it took like 30 min or more for food to come out - so all in all, the place is far from what you would call a streamlined service.

I usually try to give people the benefit of the doubt, but my experience at this pub today was disappointing. I arrived around 6 PM, tried to order a drink, and noticed that the barmaid seemed to prioritise every new male customer who approached—even though I had been standing there much longer. It was made so obvious that she was ignoring me, which is sad and honestly frustrating to experience, especially as a woman in a space that should feel welcoming to everyone. It’s disheartening to see a female bartender choose to overlook another woman. Maybe she was having a bad day, but the selective service was hard to ignore and made for an uncomfortable experience. Here’s hoping this bar can work on making every patron feel welcomed, regardless of gender or appearance.

So I tried the new Speakeasy bar last night with friends and it was an odd experience. The theory is great, although having to enter with a code felt unnecessary especially after booking a table. However the code didn’t arrive in my inbox as promised which led to what felt like a slightly frosty response from staff as they marched us towards a ‘secret’ telephone. Calling by phone and having the hidden door swing open was great and had a real sense of drama but that’s where it started to go awry. We’d already entered the speakeasy so the attempt at hiding it again up the stairs with a washing machine, bicycle and odd punched out plasterboard just looked a bit crap tbh. First impressions as we entered were good, although the sense of drama was diluted by a friendly but not very enthusiastic barman. But then the oddness returned, there was no sense of what I expected to be a prohibition style bar, we were met with images of the old game show bullseye, an annoying coloured/cheap disco light, lights that burned your retina and naff records stuck to the walls. The music was also an odd mix of age and genre. It was also hot in there and when more guests arrived it got very noisy so it became rather overbearing. Overall this promises a lot but hits the mark in many ways. It feels like the £170k didn’t extend to an interior designer who could have really elevated this to something extra special. I hope they review things and continue to improve it (although a comment from one of the party on leaving about the disappointing lack of cocktails in a cocktail bar was met with short sharp shrift from the manager!) if not I fear it’ll die a slow death 😔

The Prince Rupert is just simply one of those special gems that only old England has. Steeped in history and is the real deal. The Rupert has always excelled in its food but also its great selection of ale and all liquid refreshments. The staff are always professional polite and engaging. I think another great thing is the very comfortable and well appointed beer garden that still gives us tobacco appreciators a nice space to enjoy a great glass of beer and relax. The Rupert has just had a timely redecoration that is a triumph. Most pubs do this badly but the Rupert has smashed it. It’s always a worry these days that character is lost to fads but genuinely the pub retained its immense cosy charm and beautiful collection of mirrors and antique quite rare pub signs and brewery signs that is a great collection in its own right. The Rupert is a diamond in the town and I think it just got brighter. Salute chaps and see you soon x Richard Pennell (your neighbour) and all at the Loose Cannon

We came to meet friends for a couple of drinks that then turned into dinner too! Does not look like much from the outside but when you get in there was a great atmosphere, friendly staff, good drinks selection, great food, great service, clean toilets! Will be going again soon.

Best pub food I’ve had in a long time. Fresh home cooked pub grub at its best. Excellent new menu offering a wide and varied range of dishes. The open steak sandwich with Stilton cream sauce was to die for! Steak beautifully rare and tasty. The side of tomato and onion salad with pesto was a delight. Food and service 10/10

Great pub. Fabulous beer garden. Love the painted wooden furniture, which is very in keeping with the pub. It’s great to have this treasure of a pub. We visit most weeks. The staff are very friendly and food is always great.

Polite and friendly staff in this well run pub. Went in for Sunday lunch, the steak pie and mash with veg was worth the visit alone. Good beers/ wine and plenty of other tasty food on the menu. Would recommend it's fresh food not fast food. Since writing this review the menu as changed and the pie's are no longer to try. Also add a few more £'s onto your bill because they have rocket shot upwards.( Aug ) Also check your bill we were charged for some other table's beer. Good job we did.

A typical mix match Weatherspoon pub, super busy, which was good to see. Introduced child to the traditional pub for uni students where you can grab a decent meal and pint at affordable prices for a students. He loved the experience!

The nicest pub roast we've ever had! Everything was freshly cooked and delicious and the roast potatoes were crispy and perfect! The crackling on my pork was amazing too. The cauliflower cheese side dish was oven cooked and gorgeous too. Great, friendly staff and service and a wonderful atmosphere. We shall be back!

Superb coffee shop with an excellent choice of cakes, paninis, coffees and more. Service was first class and a very pleasant spot to while away some time in this lovely town. It is that good I've been every day during my week break in the area, changing my cycling routes to make sure I ended up at Alfresco. Returned to the cafe in May 2025 and delighted to say that it is still as good as ever!
