The building has lots of character, mind your head if you are eating upstairs, the ceiling on the site are is very low. The menu is varied with sufficient choice for everyone and the quality of the food was good. We were waiting quite a while for our main course to arrive although the waitress did apologise and said they were very busy. We were meeting friends and in no particular rush but it was at least a 25 minute wait which, having booked the table, I found excessive. The food was good with generous portions and we would visit again.

Night out 4 people. Great friendly staff. Tried very hard to please even though they had a wedding party and it was the fire event in the square. Good selection of beers etc. 3 enjoyed the food , 1 was disappointed as her fish and chips not to her liking with thin batter and over cooked chips. ( other 2 FnC were good). Nice atmosphere

Went in for lunch at 12pm sat 1/3/25 with friends. Ordered 2 club sandwiches and a long clawson Stilton and Bramley apple salad as a main £13.25. My friend halfway through her meal realised there was no Stilton on the salad but continued as she liked it. We mentioned the lack of the main ingredient when plates were collected. At no point did the staff member offer us anything or a discount. At the till we mentioned again about the lack of cheese, nothing. For £13 for a green salad with bits of apple and walnuts we will definitely not be returning. Club sandwich over toasted bacon dry.

Terrible service, more of a rude”what do you want” attitude rather than “what can I get for you” staff were miserable and had a poor attitude towards us even though we’d booked a table, food was overcooked, tasteless and just average and for the price, it was bad quality and I definitely won’t be returning. We felt like a inconvenience the table service was non existent too. Save your money and go elsewhere, don’t waste your money in a pub with no atmosphere and miserable staff that can’t be bothered with your custom

We went for valentines night. The atmosphere, staff and food were excellent. I had the best pie I think iv ever had! The wine isn't bad either, lol. We then went up to the speak easy room to watch the live music, who was fantastic! This is not the 1st time we have been. We sometimes come as a group of friends for the quiz and live music, we always have a fabulous night 👌 Highly recommend this pub! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

We were a large gathering upstairs, the food was excellent, nice portions and not too bad a price. Unfortunately a few orders were incorrect and one friends food didn't arrive until prompted. Building very interesting historically, some great features. Ladies loo was small we had to the Okey cokey to get in and out. But generally very nice.

Such a cosy, welcoming pub atmosphere, with amazing food. I'd highly recommend any of their pies with their triple-cooked chips- some of the best I've every eaten! The chocolate brownie was the icing on the cake: warmed in the oven to have that crusty outside, served with ice cream and salted caramel chocolate sauce- pure heaven! The service was top notch and the head chef has done wonders with the menu.

Diabolical service. No other words. All really miserable and insincere staff. The only the server that was able to smile wasn't very good at waiting. Service was also incredibly slow, no acknowledgement of this, no condiments given, no menu delivery in terms of toppings or upselling deals of the day etc. Also half table service, half figure out to go down and wait in a queue at the bar to pay. Other patrons are racist, absolutely pissed and harass you in the queue- again no acknowledgment of this. Complete disappointment will definitely go across the road next time.

We had lunch here. Clean pub with very good staff. Good beer. My wife had a pizza which she enjoyed. I made the mistake of having the liver. It was awful inedible and in my opinion should not have been served. Chef needs to be more careful about the selection of ingredients. In fact they should change thier supplier for this ingredient. Shame as it was otherwise a good pub. Go again possibly but will avoid the liver shame it's my favourite.

We ate here at the recommendation of a friend who lives locally. It is a nice old pub. However our party had a mixed response to the food. Mine was ok as was my husbands but one of the party had an overcooked pie ( she described it as burnt) and the other felt it was overpriced for what is was. I probably wld eat here again but not if we have to wait an hour for the food.

Went to ‘The Rupert’ for dinner on 27 Dec with family and friends. Our party increased from 6 to 9 so had to call up on the morning of the 27th to ask for a larger table. No issues whatsoever, the team were extremely accommodating. Arrived slightly ahead of time and were shown to our table. After a short while, our drinks orders were taken, and then quickly followed by our food orders - No beef and ale pie or cod loin. Gutted. Clearly they had been a popular choice that day. Thankfully there are plenty of other meals to choose from on their menu - and let me just say this, not one person in our group was disappointed with their meals. Absolutely delicious food and generous portions. My steak was very juicy and tasty and my wifes chicken pie was outstanding; the pie was filled to the brim and the pastry melted in the mouth. All-in-all a thoroughly enjoyable evening with family and friends made even better with the excellent food and service from the team at the Rupert.

Arsey service from start to finish. When ordering drinks, when ordering food. The main lady behind the bar on the 27th Dec was not happy to be there at all with a face like a slapped arse and no friendliness or smiles whatsoever. Seemed seriously pissed off having to poor a pint, or to take an order or to be there full stop. Embarrassing I chose here to meet up with an old friend who didn't know Newark, used to have nice times and good food in this pub. Left feeling totally ripped off and wishing I'd given our money to one of the many other friendlier and more deserving pubs in Newark we went to afterwards.

We had booked a Christmas meal. The pub was busy and we explained we had booked the speakeasy bar for later in the evening but after being shown to our table we waited 40 minutes and then had to ask for our starters, service was very slow. Food was rather disappointing, 2 of our party, myself included, had no form of potato on our plate for our main meal even though the menu stated roast potatoes. There was lots of red and green cabbage but little else and a very dry vegetarian option. We had booked the Prince Rupert after having a fantastic meal on the same Saturday evening last year. On the plus side the staff were all very pleasant.

I will somewhat disappointed with the reduction in food quality at the Prince Rupert compared to previous years when I have visited from Lincoln. I ordered a sirloin steak for £27, which considering it was clearly a bog standard one from a co-op packet, very small and overcooked for the 'medium to well done' that I asked for, was hugely overpriced. I was asked if the meal was ok by someone who carried on moving out of the door, before I actually had time to answer much other than that it was overcooked. Pleasant but clearly overstretched staff.

I love the Prince Rupert, so much so that I held my wedding reception here on the upper floor. The building is beautiful and service is great. However I am sad to see that the Buddha bowl has been removed from the menu - it was a great vegetarian choice and delicious. Additionally, the past couple of times I have ordered the sticky toffee pudding it has varied in size, quality, and come with or without the honeycomb topping. Overall a great pub and I just hope they add the Buddha bowl back on to the menu.

I usually try to give people the benefit of the doubt, but my experience at this pub today was disappointing. I arrived around 6 PM, tried to order a drink, and noticed that the barmaid seemed to prioritise every new male customer who approached—even though I had been standing there much longer. It was made so obvious that she was ignoring me, which is sad and honestly frustrating to experience, especially as a woman in a space that should feel welcoming to everyone. It’s disheartening to see a female bartender choose to overlook another woman. Maybe she was having a bad day, but the selective service was hard to ignore and made for an uncomfortable experience. Here’s hoping this bar can work on making every patron feel welcomed, regardless of gender or appearance.

This is a bit of a hard one. I give it 2.5 stars - between ok and dislike. A bit of a hit or miss with the service of staff. I called to enquire about reservations after seeing that their calendar online (booking page) was blocked off. The women on the phone was curt, lots of sighing then said dismissivly that they are just doing walk-ins now. But when I arrived to the place, people in the queue had reservations. But luckily getting a seat upstairs doesn't seem to be a problem - which is the historic part of the pub so the perks of this place. And staff on the day was friendly enough. However, it took like 30 min or more for food to come out - so all in all, the place is far from what you would call a streamlined service.

So I tried the new Speakeasy bar last night with friends and it was an odd experience. The theory is great, although having to enter with a code felt unnecessary especially after booking a table. However the code didn’t arrive in my inbox as promised which led to what felt like a slightly frosty response from staff as they marched us towards a ‘secret’ telephone. Calling by phone and having the hidden door swing open was great and had a real sense of drama but that’s where it started to go awry. We’d already entered the speakeasy so the attempt at hiding it again up the stairs with a washing machine, bicycle and odd punched out plasterboard just looked a bit crap tbh. First impressions as we entered were good, although the sense of drama was diluted by a friendly but not very enthusiastic barman. But then the oddness returned, there was no sense of what I expected to be a prohibition style bar, we were met with images of the old game show bullseye, an annoying coloured/cheap disco light, lights that burned your retina and naff records stuck to the walls. The music was also an odd mix of age and genre. It was also hot in there and when more guests arrived it got very noisy so it became rather overbearing. Overall this promises a lot but hits the mark in many ways. It feels like the £170k didn’t extend to an interior designer who could have really elevated this to something extra special. I hope they review things and continue to improve it (although a comment from one of the party on leaving about the disappointing lack of cocktails in a cocktail bar was met with short sharp shrift from the manager!) if not I fear it’ll die a slow death 😔

The Prince Rupert is just simply one of those special gems that only old England has. Steeped in history and is the real deal. The Rupert has always excelled in its food but also its great selection of ale and all liquid refreshments. The staff are always professional polite and engaging. I think another great thing is the very comfortable and well appointed beer garden that still gives us tobacco appreciators a nice space to enjoy a great glass of beer and relax. The Rupert has just had a timely redecoration that is a triumph. Most pubs do this badly but the Rupert has smashed it. It’s always a worry these days that character is lost to fads but genuinely the pub retained its immense cosy charm and beautiful collection of mirrors and antique quite rare pub signs and brewery signs that is a great collection in its own right. The Rupert is a diamond in the town and I think it just got brighter. Salute chaps and see you soon x Richard Pennell (your neighbour) and all at the Loose Cannon

Nice decor. Made to feel very uncomfortable by two other tables in the same room who had a full blown argument about a dog being present. This wasn’t handled well by staff, we were not acknowledged at all during the upset. I had the vegetarian option of the Sunday lunch. My husband had the beef. He sent his back as the vegetables were nearly refrigerator cold. My vegetables, such as they were, were cold too but by this point I just wanted to leave. If you’re having “teething problems” that’s fair enough but shouldn’t be charging full price for them. Shall not be going back.

Sadly things have changed on the Sunday dinner front and today the meal left us disappointed, the meat was okay and in fairness the roast potatoes were nice but the lack of vegetables for just under £17 per dinner left us hungry, there was a spoonful of cabbage and leeks and a few roasted carrots/parsnips, the gravy was not meaty it tasted like granules mixed with boiling water. We are regular customers but all in all we won’t be returning for a Sunday dinner any time soon .
