Prima Restaurant in Newcastle upon Tyne

Newcastle has plenty of places to eat, and choosing one when you've not really been before is hard. Prima met all our expectations and more, the service from the start was very goodand we never had to wait to order more drinks, help was given on ordering our food, more I was torn between three different dishes. Starters were amazing and also plenty of choice. My favourite here was the mush rooms, or maybe the Bruschetta, but the potato skins were also very good. Mains were carbonara, and I had the Rigatoni Genovese, both again very good meals 😋. The place is very cosy and has an open kitchen, plenty of staff, so service is prompt. It's definitely worth the visit, and when the final bill turned up at just short of £70 for the 2 of us, it's also very good value for money.

We're not from the area, so we always Google places to eat. I chose Italian for our Saturday night meal choice. The restaurant was a 20-minute walk from our hotel, and it caught our eye when passing it on Friday. It looked so inviting from the outside, and the menu outside tickled my taste buds! My fella booked it online, and the confirmation was sent back straight away! These people are on the ball! We arrived on a cold and chilly night at 19.25, seated straight away and the place was busy, loads of staff waiting on, working the bar and kitchen. We were made to feel welcome straight away! The service was amazing, I think we were seen to by 6 different people! We ordered 3 starters and a main each, and my goodness, the food was totally amazing! Portion sizes were great. I don't do starters and mains normally, but sharing was the way forward. Withing 55 minutes we had had started and main courses. We didn't feel rushed or feel they needed our table. When I visited the toilet upstairs, I noticed how big the restaurant was downstairs, plus a huge restaurant upstairs too! The kitchen was all open plan so you could see the chefs all cooking away! I was a little chilly, but that could be the time of year and the fact I'm getting over a cold. Hight recommended 👌

Food was excellent and staff were great

This was an amazing restaurant! The portions were generous and the food was superb. My wife said that the ravioli was the best she’d ever had. Starters were tasty (plenty of garlic on the garlic bread 👌🏻) and my steak was cooked perfectly. Service was excellent too - very friendly and made the experience very relaxed. Thoroughly recommend this restaurant and we would definitely go back for more!

was my fave italian restaurant in newcastle but feel like the quality has decreased yet price has increased over the last few years so seems a bit overpriced - £20 for a pizza now :( but nice staff and ambience and still a decent meal

Went here with family for a Christmas get together 10 people, and a child under 1 yrs old, 3:00pm14th Dec. We waited over half hour to for drinks order to be taken, only after one of us asked to be served, food over priced and poor quality, we waited, over an hour for starters. My daughter’s £21.90 pasta stroganoff that was dry and stuck to the bottom of the dish. I had di Parma pizza very salty £20:90! I could only eat half because of the saltiness, the Garlic mushroom starters disappointing. They had a table behind us of about 10 pp in the double door way that made it difficult for staff to pass through carrying food and drinks, and customers had to squeeze through to get to the toilets. Terrible experience. Never again, noise levels were terrible with a couple of tables of lasses screaming and shouting, I would not deny anyone having a good time but we couldn’t hear ourselves speak ! My opinion is that the management are greedy by cramming us in, there for compromising comfort quality and service! one thing I will say is the staff were very polite and apologetic. We spent over £400 on 2 corses and 2 drinks each (5 of us were on pop) couldn’t wait to leave!! Management you need to put your customs first!! I have made the same comments on Facebook to another customer complaining about bad experience on the same day..

I want to start by saying, we regularly eat at Prima and usually have positive experiences. Which is why we chose to eat there, as a table of 7, for our Christmas gathering. Unfortunately the service and experience last night, just wasn’t of their usual standard. And to be told ‘it’s been busy’ wasn’t really the point - I completely appreciate the festive period is a busy time in hospitality. We were initially sat upstairs but asked if we could be moved due to a Christmas party who were incredibly rowdy, quite literally getting their nipples out at the tables in the middle of a restaurant. The music was also blaring up there. We had to ask for menus after being seated and left. We were seated at 6.30 and by 8pm still hadn’t received our mains - baring in mind that 5 of us had ordered the same pasta!! When the food did arrive, the one different spicy pasta was steaming hot and the pizza also good, but the 5 same pasta weren’t hot, 2 were in the very middle of the dish but overall not great, not after 1.5 hours wait. We didn’t want to send the pasta back, given how long we had already waited to eat. I mentioned this to the manager when he checked on us and he went to the kitchen and advised they were served when they were ready. And tried to offer us a tray of limoncello? which we declined. We asked for the bill and again mentioned to the manager how we eat there often and on this occasion the service and experience wasn’t their usual, and that over 1.5 hours was quite long to wait for the food to arrive and 5/7 of them not to be hot if freshly cooked, to which he told us “the pasta’s weren’t cold”, but “maybe they had sat whilst the other items weren’t being prepared so they could serve at the same time” and gave a quick ‘sorry’. His customer service skills were dismissive and a bit rude if I’m honest, and we asked to speak to another manager for feedback (apparently there was a team of management, some upstairs and some down and one in an office), to which he dismissed as he was one of the managers. The price increase is a bit of a reach, £17-19 for a pasta dish. £35 for a bottle of white wine / £9.50 a glass!!! Honestly not reflective of the standard of service we received last night, nor expected. We removed the service charge from our bill, and would have expected a slight reduction in the overall bill, based on the 2 hours+ we were there. In all honesty, the place felt manic.

The Christmas dinner was freezing cold vegetables were very hard

We went to this restaurant it was our first time and the meal we had was fantastic. Service from the waiting staff was very good especially a young man called Sam who was vey polite and efficient in his work. A very enjoyable experience and we will definitely be coming back again.

We visited on a Sunday so had the Sunday Roast rather than Italian. It was lovely, the beef was tender and decent sized portions. Service was really good, the two servers were quick and attentive. The place itself is quirky given location under/inside the bridge and makes good use of the space. Drinks slightly limited choice if not a wine drinker. Toilets disappoint considering the rest of the setup is so good. Would highly recommend, for Roast at least, but sure they'd deliver all their meals of similar quality given the smell from the other guest choices.

celebrated my bday here not long ago, most of my friends didn’t show up which was sad but i still loved it because the restaurant was beautiful, my food was stunning (the linguine scoglio, i have already ordered it for delivery since trying it the first time, literally divine) and the staff were just so kind. thank you

Prima has always been great and I have been numerous times over the years. We chose this place for our work Christmas party this year and couldn’t have had a worse evening! We were a large party of 30 so had booked in advance and pre ordered all of our food. The setting was lovely on the third floor with plenty of room and our own bar. When buying drinks at the bar before the meal a manager was arguing with the poor waiting staff about card readers (in front of customers), which they didn’t have ready resulting in us having to get drinks then go back and forward to pay once they could take payment. Having all arrived on time at 7 pm, and after asking staff numerous times when we would be served, our food didn’t start to arrive at the tables until 8.30-8.45pm. We asked if they could do anything whilst we had waited, free bread/olives? Nothing! Totally appreciate it was very busy but the wait was ridiculous. We had another venue booked (reserved with a large deposit) for after the meal at 9pm, me and a colleague had to leave the restaurant to ask the next venue to push back the booking to avoid losing a large deposit. We were offered free limoncello shots, again disaster struck when the near full tray was spilled over one of our colleagues. We had no money taken off the bill as compensation for our terrible service and not one member of the management team offered an apology or even came to our tables to apologise for the delay at any time. The poor waiting staff appeared very stressed throughout the whole night, and totally appreciate they have no control over the kitchen, yet they are the ones facing the queries. Extremely disappointing and exceptionally poor customer service, we will most certainly avoid eating here again.

Terrible, slow service. Awful, overpriced wine. The bread board was stale & the grissini were broken. There are so many good Italians in the Toon, try them instead

Food was good, but I was shocked to pay £3.80 for a small cup of tea, which was cold.

We had a really lovely meal & service last night at Prima. Lasagne & galic bread & I had Gluten free seafood penne, it was absolutely beautiful and one of the best I had ever eaten. Thank you everyone at Prima 😊

I had a lovely experience at your restaurant. The food was outstanding and the cocktails exceeded our expectations. Big, big portions and balanced prices also. Everything was 10/10. I will for sure come back in the future and I highly recommend it.

Highly recommend the bottomless brunch. The cocktails were amazing and the food was delicious and intolerances are really catered for well. Special mention to Jenni who looked after us so well and made sure my food was dairy/soya free, made for a most relaxing night with friends.

Great Italian. We went Sunday evening and we had two friendly and attentive staff members. We had bruschetta, potato skins and olives (starter); and pizza, meatballs and arrabiatta and vegetable lasagne. It was all fab and a bottle of Valpolicello Ripasso complemented the food. Highly recommended and not far from Crowne Plaza where we were staying.

Prima is a bit of a modest name, Excellent would be a better fit in my opinion. The pizza was delicious and the service friendly, very beautiful location under the vaults of an old railway bridge.

Love this place. First class service, prices reasonable compared to other highly overrated restaurants on the quayside. The ambience is something else.

We had a birthday lunch at Prima during our trip to Newcastle. It was one of the best food experiences lately. The two spiced margaritas actually had a kick to them which was great. The lasagna and pizza were fantastic. But most of all was the atmosphere of the place and just the best service. Khaoula made sure to give the best recommendations and was so nice! We’ll definitely be back when visiting Newcastle again

Friendly, welcoming, great food and service. A place where you'll feel equally comfortable whether dining solo (which I was), as a couple, or a group. Truly special.

I used to come here once a month around 5 or 6 years ago but we’ve eased off with the drastic increase in prices. The prices here are astronomical compared to elsewhere in Newcastle and it seems Prima now think they’re in central London for pricing. This was my first visit in years and it will be my last. Service was shocking. Really slow and the servers repeatedly walked away from the table without taking orders from everyone sat on it (there were 10 of us). The meals were okay but at almost £20 a pizza it was nothing special at all. The drinks orders were so, so slow and we almost got up and left before our final round of drinks arrived, 15 minutes after they were ordered. One of our orders was stone cold in the middle (a calzone) and we were told not to order another one as it ‘takes too long’ to cook. Two of the pizzas were burnt and the seafood ravioli was a tiny portion for its £19 price point. Not the excellent restaurant I remember it being and the food is almost twice the price of what it was back then. Would not recommend at all anymore.

Very good food and service. It was a bit of a quiet midweek night, so the atmosphere was not great.

This place was a great wee find whilst staying in the city for a couple of nights - we dined on both evenings it was so good. The ambiance is great with lovely music and a fantastic buzz about the place. Cocktails on 2:1 offer which is great when you stay in Scotland as we can’t have offers like this 🥲 . The trio of bruschetta and pate starter were both very tasty, carbonara & seafood pasta also very tasty and lots of seafood including king prawns. On the 2nd evening we opted for 3 starters at £19 which was great value - meatball bruschetta, chicken wings, pork belly, followed by lasagna. All again great value and very tasty, only criticism I would have is that the starters are a bit on the large portion size not leaving room to enjoy main meal but this is just my opinion. Staff are really friendly and offer a genuine service where they interact with the guests and on both evenings we were served by attentive and friendly staff. Would definitely return next time in Newcastle. Well Done to all 😀

Great food, heftys portions and nice cocktails. Staff are very attentive and friendly. We had the carbonara, and mushroom risotto as well as creme brulee and tiramasu for desert. It was all lovely, we will be going again next time we're both in Newcastle

Food here was delicious. One of the best seafood pastas I've had. And Nando, my server, give that guy a raise. Top service and food to match. Lovely place to enjoy a nice dinner.

Just visiting New Castle and came across this lovely restaurant. The food and staff were amazing. Just perfect.

Popped in for a quick lunch, which was healthy, tasty, and just the right portions. Pity that it was our last day in Newcastle as we would have certainly gone back for dinner. Great service with attention to detail to make sure our visit was perfect.

Good Italian restaurant in The historical centre of Newcastle. Enjoyed the food. Service was nice. Place was a little noisy, but what can you expect on a Friday night!

We came for some quick lunch unfortunately we won't be retuning again food was terrible for starter we got bruchetta and bread/olives, bread was days old very hard and dry, then risotto with fillet steak greasy and no flavour and stroganoff tagliatelle with fillet steak just tasted like mustard nothing else! The drinks were the best part.

Went for bottomless brunch for my friend's Birthday . We were asked to upgrade to the cocktails instead of prosecco as the waitress said there's only one bottle of prosecco left! We didn't want to so she said "I'll speak to the manager" they must have found some! As we had a few glasses. Not good value for the money. Starter was awful. Dry garlic bread and a starter piled up so high it looked like left overs. I couldn't work out what it was.! Pizza was OK and fresh so it saved the day. Personally I wouldn't go back. The bill of £176 for 4 was definitely not good value!

Lovely 3 course meal. Went for a colleagues retirement do. Apparently I hit a hat trick with starter, main and dessert. My colleagues weren't pleased with their choice of dessert (cheesecake) which was mealy, when brought to the notice of the waiters we were offered a complimentary bottle of wine to make up. 2 for one on the cocktails made it a fun evening

Been here a couple of times but today we’ve got served our dinner by a blonde server whos very rude to us and to other table as well. The food was nice though

We were visiting Newcastle and decided to eat here, the menu and food looked good at a reasonable price, however the waitress was terrible rude and unfriendly I couldn’t get her name but she was blonde with long hair and fake patchy tan with a terrible attitude, if you hate your job don’t do it. We will never come back to this place or recommend it thanks to her.

20/07/2024 Family meal for an 80th birthday. 2 meals clearly forgotten about and arrived a long time after the others and only after a reminder. My meal, king prawns in tomato and chilli was good, chicken caeser salad was poor. Tasteless frozen chicken, packet croutons and limp salad. To be fair, a typical chain restaurant meal but I won't be going back. The bar person in the upstairs area was the only redeeming feature.

Food was really nice, can’t go wrong with it, bit pricey but it’s worth the quality of the food. A server was a bit arrogant, but other than that a really nice restaurant and would love to return

Amazing staff absolutely amazing food a bit pricey but definitely well worth it food was the best I've ever had and the same thing was said by all 6 of us eating out Sunday staff were amazing as we had a little incident with 1 of our party but staff were great cudnt do enough will give this place 20 out of ten the best Italian restaurant I e ever been to great stuff can't wait to go back Nd they do take ours to so that's definitely for me give it a go folks you will definitely not be disappointed with the food and drink here

Prima is our go to Italian restaurant and it is always spot on. We dined here yesterday for my boyfriend’s birthday and the food was so good. We had a cheesy garlic bread which was excellent (cheese pulls were insane) and skinny fries. For mains we had the linguini paolo and the Mexicana risotto, which were both amazing. My go to is the linguini paolo and I can’t actually count how many times I’ve had it, it’s so good! We also had some strawberry daiquiris which were really nice and well presented. I’d definitely recommend dining here ⭐️

Quiet night but food was nice. For what it is a bit pricey as I think 5.50 for a bowl of chips too expensive.

I’ve visited Prima on a few occasions. Our latest visit was for mother in laws birthday. First time in England she’s from Finland. We reserved a table under the arch of the bridge because it’s such a great setting. The food is always top quality and cooked to perfection. The staff always go above and beyond in their service and also in their interaction with customers , this give you a very personal service. If you’ve never been to Prima make sure you put it on your list to visit , I can guarantee you will not be disappointed . Can’t wait for our next visit to this gem of a restaurant .

Ordered on just eat for my first time after being recommended and a huge let down. Not sure if it was just a one off but got a Kiev pizza. Dough had zero flavour, pizza sauce bland (tasted like tomato puree, no garlic, oregano or basil flavours at all) the chicken was in big chunks but was so dry. It actually tasted like it had come out a packet. Then it has these splotches of garlic which actually tasted a little sour. I’d hoped for a nice garlic confit.

As some other reviews have highlighted, the food here has the taste and texture of microwave food. With the choice of Italian restaurants locally you'd be foolish to spend your money here.

I booked a table for my mam's 60th birthday there was 9 of us all together. Food was delicious, staff very helpful, where they had us seated was lovely at the back. I'm so very greatful we had a fabulous night. Would recommend.

First time visiting, the staff were so lovely and the service was really quick. The food was impeccable, the restaurant and toilets were both sparkling. Lovely atmosphere and the portions were more than generous! Would visit Newcastle again just to visit this restaurant, will visit again in a heartbeat! The belly pork and black pudding starter was the best thing I’ve ever eaten in my life!

Me and my wife visited with my daughter and her boyfriend , the place is great , we had a table underneath the arches which is very impressive , I love Italian food and this was one of the very best I've eaten at. The service was also excellent not too slow or too fast and very nice people. I thought the food was well priced for the quality , the wine was just a little more expensive than I thought it should have been. Would definable go again , can highly recommend the seafood linguine.

Our dinner was a few months ago and I have very fond memories of it. The servers were adorable and efficient. The dishes were generous and very successful. This is a good place in Newcastle to eat Italian cuisine. I recommend!

The location is large, there are many seats, the food is good, and the service is friendly, but the price is a bit expensive.

Great atmosphere. Busy but not too noisy. Had garlic bread which was really good, and marinara pizza. Also very good. Partner had seafood linguine which was packed with prawns. Friendly staff. Good service. On the pricey side for an Italian but worth it for the good quality food.

I have visited this restaurant many times in the past and been very happy, but feel the prices have shot up since our last visit. No complaints about the food or service however I don’t feel the prices are justified. There are cheaper Italian restaurants in Newcastle, where the food is as good, if not better.

Food amazing. Getting showed to our table when manager stopped us and told us no you can't sit in there. Then let next 3 tables go through. They hadn't booked either. For him to dance and slyly laugh at us . Rest of staff were wonderful though

It was not my first visit here, and I came back as I have always really enjoyed the meal. Wide menu catering for most tastes. Very good food and a decent selection of drinks. Prices are reasonable too, and I think they offer great value for money.

Positive - the restaurant is clean, service efficient, and staff courteous Negative - not the homely, family run, Italian restaurant of old, when Luigi and son Paul owed this establishment. Prices excessive and quality average. For example, a sea-food pizza with tinned tuna prevalent = £19.70 In summary, nice venue and staff, but very business focused, with happy hour quality food, but at Cordon Bleu prices, Nearby, Uno’s Trattoria is a much more preferable establishment, in our humble opinion

Have been going to prima for years. Service and food are good and restaurant is clean. It can be packed during peak hours. The menu have been predominantly the same over a good few years now, apart from the price, which has increase on a yearly basis. It used to be affordable and a steal during happy hour. With the introduction of mandatory service charge and price hike, I wouldn't be going on much often.

Disappointing really. Two of us, starters came wrong, first drinks were served after food arrived, although I could see my beer getting flat on the bar's counter. Pizzas were very flat, stodgy and heavy in stomach, because dough must have beem mixed only an hour before and not given time to raise at all. Meaning that yeast would ferment in stomach rather than in the dough prior baking. At one point that service was slow and unattentive, guy who seemed to be in charge, sat down in one of the dinning tables looking smth online. On top of this experience, they charged 10% service and it took a while to pay and had to ask for change back!!! Not returning there anytime soon.

Overall we had a good experience at Prima. The service was very good, staff were friendly enough and did not require a deposit for a large booking. The food is really good here, but from previous visits the price has certainly gone up quite a lot and found it quite expensive for an Italian

Horrible went for a birthday mealno salmon at all in the salmon pasta. Very poor service. Desert horrible so disappointed!!! Was it because it was 2 4 1 would have rather paid full price for decent quality food 😒😒😒😒😒

Risotto was best ive ever tasted

Nice enough place. The staff, server, was great. Food was OK. Admittedly we had the Christmas menu rather than their normal one. I'm sure the Italian food is better.

Came for a Xmas work party and the staff were great, food was great and everyone had such a lovely night. Very catering to allergies and requirements.

Visited for works Christmas night out, 18 quid for a pizza ? Not value for money at all as I've had better from Iceland for less than a fiver

Booked a table for 20 for our annual Christmas outing. 2 courses for 30.00 was the deal and from the menu it seemed fair because of the season. I opted for the fois gras and turkey Christmas dinner. Starter was ok but the figs had no taste, pate was just a slither and the toasted bread was stale. Turkey dinner was just inedible, only thing cooked in an oven was the Yorkshire pudding. Everything else was either boiled or microwaved. Turkey must have been cut from an anorexic bird, sprouts, cauliflower, carrots and broccoli felt like they had just been run under a hot tap, cut into a carrot and it flew across the room. Stuffing and pigs in blankets deep fried??? And the piece de resistance…no potatoes!!!! Not even cranberry sauce. No effort made on the occasion either. Colleagues had the Christmas log for desert, not sure what is was supposed to be but it was brown and frozen and yes, they couldn’t eat it as it was just rank. For a total bill of £600 it was a disgrace, as a group we will not be returning

We visited the restaurant as a group of friends to celebrate a birthday. The waitress was so disengaged, rude and irritated the whole time which really impacted on our experience. We had a problem with one of the dishes and she was completely unhelpful and had no desire to apologise or rectify the situation. To make it worse - we were charged for a dish that we couldn't eat with no acknowledgement or explanation. the chef was also leaning over the pass and acting unprofessionally, pointing at tables with an aggressive attitude. We have been to Prima a lot- however, after this experience, we will not return and I will be sharing my experience so that others don't experience the same.

It’s not often I’m lost for words but honestly I am, after eating from Prima I find myself at a loss. We ordered through Deliveroo and I’ll be honest I wasn’t impressed at the lasagne alone being nearly £18 but let me tell you after tasting it I’d happily over £20 for it! When I first tasted the lasagne I thought I was going to pass out by how good it was (literally nearly fell over) it’s hands down the best lasagne I’ve ever had in my life. Every time me and my family try a new Italian we do the traditional “carbonara test” and rate it on how good it tastes, it’s a weird tradition I know. We’ve done this for many years now and after tasting this carbonara I can honestly say it’s the best one any of us have ever had! And that’s from over 20 years of doing our little taste test. If you want to experience the best Italian food you’ll ever taste then I can’t recommend Prima enough it’s hands down the best Italians around! Only place we’ll ever go to now I don’t care how pricey it is because the flavour and quality supersedes any price tag trust me

My fiancè and I went to Prima restaurant for a meal last minute. We were greeted by Khoala and she was so friendly and was so quick to get us a table. Nando was a lovely guy and treated us excellently. His customer service was fantastic and tended to us at every opportunity. We are also grateful to the chef Dani for a delicious meal. These people are a credit to the restaurant and are a definite reason for us to return. I can only thank them for their hospitality!

Ordered a blackcurrant and lemonade on arrival, as I was driving, and it arrived promptly. On recommendation, I ordered Rigatoni Genovese. Which is Cajun chicken, sun dried tomato pesto, cream. It was served with minimal wait and was a good-sized serving. The chicken pieces were tender, moist, and plenty of them too. I hadn't been here for several years and I was very pleased with my visit. Hopefully a return visit won't be too far off.

100% recommend bottomless brunch at Prima, food was well presented and very tasty! The drinks kept flowing despite it being extremely busy on a Saturday evening. Lavinia & Cornel were amazing, always making sure we had a drink and that everything was ok, 5* service from them both!
