We came twice this year during our holiday to Looe. We had the carvery which was delicious and thoroughly enjoyed, make sure you book! We then came back on a sunny day and enjoyed tapas on the crows nest. It was delicious and the view was incredible. My son had the kids fish and chips which would have fed most adults! He loved it and the staff were so friendly and welcoming, they couldn’t do enough for us. We will 100000000% be back again next year when we return to Looe for our annual pilgrimage.

We popped to Looe for the day and, not having been for a while we weren't sure where to eat. We booked a table here for lunch and it was lovely. We had our dog with us but were able to eat in the bar...it is quayside, and being sat by the window, had brilliant views. A good number of gluten free, vegetarian and vegan options available. The food was cooked to order, well presented and reasonably priced...we were peckish and so some of my pics are part way through. When finished, all plates & bowls clean! 😀 Hotel was clean, tidy and modern. All the staff we had contact with were bright, polite & professional. Jill, our server, was friendly, smiley & chatty and nothing was too much trouble. Will definitely go again! A gem of a place. Ps...it has a roof terrace where you can eat...brilliant views!

Called in for a Sunday lunch ( carvery) £15 for a choice of Beef, turkey or gammon. Very generous portions with great crispy roast potatoes and plenty of veg, the Yorkshire pudding was massive! However the puddings was the icing on the cake, handmade not pre brought lemon cheesecake was lovely, but the pineapple upside down cake was the winner. Overall a great find in looe, with great views, great service, and excellent food. We will return.

Currently working in Cornwall for one of the major holiday parks. On a day off went into the Porthbyhan Hotel for something to eat and drink. The prices are average for a hotel restaurant. Amazing food, friendly staff and right by the harbour. Bus stop not too far away and its an easy walk across Looe Bridge. Highly recommended. Also they do Great Carvery on a Sunday had that a fair few times. Nice place, Good Location all that you need from a Hotel Restaurant by the harbour in Cornwall x

Carvery’s can be very hit and miss as we all know. This Sunday we were blown away! The meat was perfectly cooked. They catered for well done and rare beef too! Gammon amazing as was the turkey - and plenty of it!! Veg offering great too. What topped it for me was the front of house staff (gill was new and my gos she was so lovely) and the chefs! Not often you find a friendly head chef who is polite to not just the punters but conducts himself politely with his colleagues. All too Often chefs lord it about - I should know I’ve had enough restaurants! All in all has to be the go-to carvery in Looe:

The Portbyhan Hotel's restaurant is a firm family favourite, especially the Sunday Carvery which is always well patronised by both local residents & visitors alike. The carvery itself is always of a high quality and, given the price, exceptional value for money. Drinks are also reasonably priced and a good selection of desserts should you have the room to indulge! One of the key successes of The Portbyhan (other than its beautiful riverside location & great food) is the team of well trained, friendly & engaging staff. Highly recommended.

We decide to go out for Sunday lunch but found most places we’re booked up. We ended up at the portbyhan. The restaurant was ok, but it could do with a bit of a clean. I had to ask for a clean fork and the wine glasses were a bit grubby. The lunch is self service and the food was not very good quality. It looked like it was all frozen food and not fresh. Not very enjoyable. Cheep and cheerful I suppose.

We went to this restaurant on our first day on holiday. The three of us ordered and our food took a long time to arrive. The food arrived before any cutlery. Whilst two of the meals were good, mine was extremely poor. The mushroom Mac n cheese burger was extremely bland. No hint of mushrooms cheese or truffle oil. And very dry. During our whole meal and for quite some time after no one came near or by to ask how the food was or if we wanted any more drinks etc. in the end I had to go and find someone in order to complain. They went to find someone else who took a while to arrive. They then went to speak to the chef which again took ages. At no point was the waiter Michael particularly apologetic about the situation. £12 was deducted but considering a 175ml glass of wine was £9 I didn’t feel that compensated!! Very disappointing and will not be returning which is a shame considering the location.

Didn’t live up to the promise of the website or the Tripadvisor write ups. The food was a long way from fresh and had been over-cooked. We sent back fish which had been burnt only to receive one that wasn’t much better. The peas had clearly been under a heater for a while and were dry and the salad was plain. The service was good and the view and decor were nice but let down by poor quality food.

Surprisingly we were put in the brasserie rather than the restaurant and were the only couple eating. Had Sunday lunch here after recommendation from a friend, the beef was well cooked, also the roasties, the swede was cooked well, but Luke warm, parsnips peas and cauliflower mediocre, the Yorkshire puds were so overdone the disintegrated when you put a fork into them, we tried to be constructive in our criticism to the floor manager Jackie, as everyone was leaving food especially the yorkies, it fell on deaf ears as there was no response from her, it could be so much better with that extra attention to the details.

This is the Publicly accessible Restaurant of the Portbyhan Hotel, one of less than a handful of Eateries on the Westside of the River dividing the 2 halves of the Cornish Port Town of Looe. The table area is located on the 1st Floor of the establishment, adjacent to the Hotel Reception. The Evening Menu is best described as Compact, with just enough choice to suit most tastes. Food and Drink orders were taken quite promptly, but there was a good 40 minute wait for food to be presented, to our table of two. When it arrived our meals were acceptable, but not enough to write home about. As for Value, the bill was the highest we had encountered during our stay in Looe, particularly the Drinks, which proved to be the most expensive from all our meals in the Town. The main plus? It was the shortest walk back to our Holiday Accommodation of all the Restaurants we ate at in Looe. If you have sampled all the other eateries in the Town then you might consider trying this one, but don’t expect anything special. Public Car parking is very, very limited in the area of the Restaurant. Major Credit Cards are accepted.

I have stayed here before but only had time for breakfast, but this time we have come as a family of 5 (2 adults and 3 children aged 16,14 & 9) for a meal. The menu catered for everyone and the food more then lived up to expectations. The food was amazing (highly recommend the scallops to start), but it was all very good. What makes this restaurant is the staff, but all in a relaxed and vibrant atmosphere. Obviously everyone is very respectful of fellow diners, but at no point did we feel we had to whisper or speak quietly, we could just talk and laugh normally. The service was excellent, attentive and the head waitress even though was dealing with a coach load of people, recognised me and even overheard the children say happy anniversary to us and we received a drink on the house, which was a lovely touch. The way the restaurant is structured to ensure social distancing, the conduct and cleanliness of the staff in the new climate was obvious and well thought through. We felt every measure had been taken to ensure the safety of both customers and staff.Overall it was an excellent experience which we all enjoyed and can happily say it was one of the best family meals we have ever had.We will be back.

This was the worst dining experience that we have ever experienced! From the service, to the atmosphere and the final dagger being the food! Untrained waiters not allowing us to sit down and get comfortable, but instead rushing us to order drinks before even seeing the menu! Order our food, asked for starters, never received them! Instead received mains, waiters thought this was funny, we didn’t! Brioche bun on the burger as hard as a rock, chicken crucified! Frozen fish served when it was meant to be catch of the day! How can you serve frozen fish over looking a harbour, finally, the broccoli was so mushy and disgusting! To top off the meal the head waitress aggressively shouted asking why we had not finished our meals and us feel extremely uncomfortable! Would not recommend, keep far away, save a trip and spend your money better elsewhere!

As it happened it was entirely nice enough to stay and have some dinner, which is what we did and I thoroughly enjoyed my fish and chips and Madam her Caesar salad. We ate there again a couple of days later, admittedly more because we couldn't get in anywhere else, but it wasn't really a disappointment because it does have a lovely view, the food is fine, the staff really are doing their best under difficult conditions and they are observing the Covid restrictions.

The waiting staff were brilliant - friendly and obliging. The breakfasts were particularly good and you could order items from both the hot and cold menus. We have not given 5 stars as on the last night there was a mix up with our steak order with the next table's steak order and so we had a very long wait for our food. Firstly, for everyone reviewing with more than three stars, you owe me money. I rely on you guys to choose my restaurants lol. We are not fussey eaters at all, to start we opted for the tomato soup, which was tepid warm when it arrived, two stale unbuttered slices of bread accompanied the dish. Great start. My wife had a cheese sandwich, i would suggest the grated cheese was more than a weekend old. I had a greek salad and when i mean greek salad i mean a side salad with four bits of feta on it. The two bowls of chips were under cooked, i had the pleasure of watching the cook pour the bag into the fryer, why on earth the kitchen is open for people to view is bizarre, if you want to watch three unhappy fellas work together, these are your lads.Covid-19 protocol was taking place however, the head chef wore his mask as a chin strap with his face on show, he must have been hot.Service is slow. All in all a poor evening even in the current climate.Best part was the view.

Food was awfully over priced. Our dinners were like something you would get on a 2 for £10 deal at a pub. If you were paying that you’d expect what you were getting, but my partners rib eye was £20 on the menu and was just one big bit of gristle. The catch of the day was trout, then we were told it was sea bass, and it arrived as salmon without any sauce. I enjoyed my food but it was very plain, something you’d be happy with if you’d made it at home. The Prosecco however was lovely and came with strawberries in the glass, a lovely touch. The food was excellent - big portions, freshly cooked and so reasonable! Will definitely come again, and would like to try the Brasserie and Crow's Nest bar.

The brasserie has a big problem; the view is blocked by a structural beam. This does not apply to the restaurant but you need to book a window seat in advance.

We had a lovely stay here and the hotel itself is Gorgeous. Unfortunately this didn't quite match when you get to your room which had a caravan size en-suite which stank of drains. The room was also boiling hot even with the fan that was provided and we didn't sleep well for two nights. The Decor also very dated in the room which was strange as the restaurant and reception and other rooms were really sleek and modern.

We stayed here to celebrate my Mother's 80th birthday and the location is perfect overlooking the estuary although there is no desiginated parking so you will need to park in one of the public car parks but this was not a problem and as my Mother is disabled we were able to stop outside to unload our luggage. The rooms are nice although I would advise against staying on the top floor as those rooms are very small and are very warm in the hot weather as there is no air conditioning. We had a meal in the hotel which was very good and the breakfasts were delicious and plentiful. The staff are very friendly and the service is good. Overall we really enjoyed our stay and would recommend this hotel and would certainly stay here again.

After recommendation we booked in for the carvery lunch which is fantastic. Great value at £4.95 small and £8.95 standard. Just go there.... you will not be disappointed. Book and get a river view. We were greeted by Antaeya who was welcoming friendly and attentive. Faultless!

Spotted the sign for Sunday Carvery and thought we'd give it a try. Very friendly and attentive staff. Lovely location and views. Food was excellent. Small carvery for teenage daughter's and standard for wife and self. All had plenty and loved it. Four empty plates. Really well priced. Would highly recommend.

We were looking for a place to eat while strolling along the harbourside. Various places were offering dinner at a similar price. We chose the Portbyhan because of the welcoming staff on reception, at the restaurant, and in the bar where we ended up with a window seat overlooking the river. The entrance to the hotel, the bar and restaurant looked very smart, possibly recently refurbished as everything was really clean and fresh.

I have been here for Sunday lunch on several occasions. The dining room is light & airy. You cannot fault the value for money Carvery - there is always a good selection of meat, potatoes, veg & trimmings. My only comment is that I would prefer an addition of a "plainer veg" - peas or broccoli as an example. In fact as we were leaving I saw a member of staff having her meal with one of her children having exactly that! Puddings are always plentiful and delicious. The staff go out of their way to make sure you have everything you need. It's not fine dining but a really good value Carvery.

Mum is local and always takes us here for Sunday lunch Great value and food is very good , get a ticket for either £4.95 small plate or £8.95 for large plate I wouldn't bother for the extra slice of meat or the slightly larger plate and stick with the £5 plate. Pile on the veggies and roasted potatoes and enjoy the views over the harbour from the west Looe side if the tide is in then how about taking the ferry across from east Looe for 50p. Excellent value and not bad at all.

My Husband and I booked a meal here for later in our holiday. We wasn't quite sure what to expect as it looked really nice but expected to have to pay quite a bit, but we were very pleasantly surprised. The service was fantastic, the staff made sure we were happy and had everything we needed/wanted, the food was absolutely delicious and the price was great. The bill totalled to less than what we had paid on previous nights for general pub food.

Been coming to the GL for last 8 years whilst holidaying. Its a lovely, local pub with great views. Been recently taken over, bit smarter now, good beers and bar offering and it is worth a visit. BUT

the only place open on a Sunday on St Martins! So glad it was open, it was absolutely heaving but we got there in time to get seats and what was left of the cakes and drinks.

Fantastic find on our day trip to Bude. My husband had a delicious gluten free breakfast (finding somewhere good that's gluten free isn't always easy) and I enjoyed the American pancakes & a cappuccin
